Work Text:

“Needed to escape already?”

The voice startled Tyler but he calmed immediately when he realized who it was. He really should be used to her frightening sudden appearances but she managed to catch him off guard most times.

“I just needed some air.” He replied watching as she sat down next him on the courtyard stairs.

She nodded, “Understandable, I can only stomach my parents disgustingly sweet shows of affection for so long.”

A short laugh escaped his lips, “They’d win any couples award.” Tyler agreed.

“Certainly, but tonight’s about you right?” Wednesday asked watching his eyes shift downward and his smile vanish into a thin line.

“It’s a lot..” Tyler admitted.

“I think so too, it’s simply a coronation into our household.” Wednesday shrugged.

He took a deep breath and released his eyes shooting up into the night sky a full moon present.

A lot had happened the past few months, his release from Willowhill, his father mysteriously dying, The Addams somehow convincing a judge to release him into their custody to serve out the rest of his time, and his eventual enrollment into Nevermore Academy along with the two Addams siblings.

His mind was swimming.

“And how do you feel about that?” Tyler suddenly asked, staring at the gloomy girl who looked more tired and distant these days. She was always hard to read, but these days it seemed almost impossible to decipher what was going on in her head.

“Doesn’t matter what I think, what do you think?” She said flipping the question back onto him.

He stiffened.

He didn’t know what to think these days, what to feel, how to act, his entire life had changed in only a few short years.

“I don’t know what I should do.” He spoke honestly.

Silence enveloped the two of them for a brief minute, the sounds of all the people the Addams family invited for this truly obscurely strange and kooky occasion could be heard in the background.

Wednesday suddenly stands up, “I’m going back in, somebody’s gotta break up another round of my parents tangoing.” She flatly said.

Tyler nodded standing up following her back into the mansion before anyone would start questioning where he went.

-

It had been a couple months since Tyler’s official coronation into the Addams household and everything was still so new to him, he tried to stick with a clear routine, one that he couldn’t mess up, go to school, go to his dorm, do his homework, eat, and go to bed. He did no extra curricular activities, talked to no one, and kept his head down as much as he possibly could.

But it was days like these where he wished he had someone to talk to outside of class, because this currently homework assignment was killing him.

His eraser had completely worn down from the amount of times he erased and had to start over.

“I hope your French is better than your math skills.” A voice appeared behind him.

He nearly jumped.

“Wednesday.” He said hesitantly unsure of why she was talking to him.

Since the coronation Wednesday hadn’t spoken much to him since, Pugsley actually spent more time with Tyler these days talking about numerous things in the outcast world that he wasn’t at all familiar with.

Pugsley was like his tutor in all things outcasts and Addams family related, which he was extremely grateful for since he was completely new to this new part of his life.

She sat next to him on the bench, they were outside on the campus foyer.

“Don’t you have a partner on this assignment?” She questioned.

“Uh no, I just decided to do it by myself, didn’t seem like anyone wanted to partner up with me.” He answered nonchalantly but Wednesday could tell his tone was a bit tense and stressed.

“Who are you?” Wednesday suddenly asked catching him off guard once again.

He raised a brow a dry laugh escaping his throat at the odd question. “What do you mean?” He asked staring at her oddly.

“I don’t like repeating myself.” Wednesday sighed.

He shrugged, “I’m Tyler..half outcast half normie..you have amnesia?”

“Do you?” She shot back her tone shifting into one of annoyance.

He shook his head, “I’m not following.”

“This is why you don’t have a partner in this assignment, your clearly incompetent.” She huffed. “You don’t even know who you are.”

He bemusingly looked at her, wondering what she wanted him to say, He was a half outcast, half hyde.

“Let me see your assignment.” Wednesday suddenly said grabbing the paper before he could even object.

She took one look at the assignment and scoffed tossing it back to him.

“ I would give you a grade lower than an “F” if possible, you didn’t even get your name right.” She said standing up and walking away before he could say anything.

He looked at his assignment and immediately glanced at what he wrote as his name and he couldn’t help but wonder what she was getting at.

-

The door to Wednesday dorm shot open almost as soon as he knocked and he almost fell inside the room.

“Is your identity crisis over?” She asked bluntly.

“I wrote my name right, you need glasses?” He shot back.

“That’s rich coming from you.” She scoffed.

“Just tell me what the problem is.” Tyler bluntly retorted.

“Last time I checked my parents adopted you, much to my dismay.” She said crossing her arms.

“Soo?” Tyler asked ignoring her the other half of that statement.

“Soo? Doesn’t that make you an Addams?” She bitterly replied her patience running thin.

He froze.

He had never once in the time he’s spent in the Addams family considered himself an Addams. But the papers Morticia and Gomez signed to officially adopt him would I guess make it legally so.

“You think I'm an Addams?” He questioned.

“Only in name..But That’s still yet to be seen..” She said looking him over. “My parents however would definitely say yes, they seem to love you.” She said plainly again no emotion in those words.

“And you?” He asked before he could stop himself.

“Do I what, Love you? I don’t even know you.” She answered swiftly.

He nodded, “Fair point.”

She nodded in return standing up and opening the door for him to exit, but not before handing him a new eraser “Thought you might need one.” was all she said as he exited out the dorm and headed back to his work.

-

“Kind of a Deja Vu thing we got going on huh?” She said sitting next to him on the dock of a pier right off of this old lake that wasn’t too far off of campus.

He almost laughed at the words..but he didn’t jump this time, that was progress in his mind.

“Kind of.” He agreed. “Why are you out here?”

“Needed to think..” She answered sounding a bit uneasy, that’s when he looked at her and saw she looked a bit disheveled.

“Vision?” He asked.

“You’re learning, congratulations.” She said flatly.

“Another mystery?” He wondered.

“Nothing I can’t solve on my own.” She steadied her breathing.

He nodded not fully buying it but he remained quiet if she wanted his help, she’d ask for it.

“Can I tell you an Addams family secret, one that every member knows?” She said suddenly.

He looked at her trying to determine if it was trick or not, but he could tell she was dead serious. So he nodded, “Sure.”

“Ignore everyone’s opinions.”

He dryly laughed, “Easy to say.”

“Easy to do.” Wednesday insisted, “Something you must do, or you’re not going to last in this household..not that it makes me any difference.”

“Then why are you helping me?”

“Because you now carry my last name, and I’m not about to let you ruin my reputation.” She said directly.

Tyler scoffed, “You know not everyone can be like you..shut off their emotions.” He says with a bit more ice than he intended but she couldn’t possibly understand what he was dealing with right now.

“Is that what you think I do?” Her tone accusatory, an emotion he was used too, yet this seemed a bit more bewildered than he was used too hearing from her.

“Isn’t it?”

She takes a steady breath, and seems like she ponders her reply for a second, now this was new to him, she was always so straight forward and direct, whatever she thought usually automatically came out, there was never much though behind it, but he could see her choosing her words wisely as she straightened her posture.

“I’m an Addams..but i’m still mortal contrary to many others beliefs.” She said almost secretively, like it was a secret that she had held in forever that no one but her was supposed to know. “And so are you.” She says looking at him in a way that eased his nerves of her intentions. Was she really trying to help him? And if so why? He betrayed her..Nearly killed her.

“I’m a Hyde.” He corrected.

“And I’m a Psychic, but even I can’t see your inner thoughts.” She huffed. “As a raven I can only do so much..I can only see the worst in people..the worst scenes..the aftermath..the poor future decisions..it’s difficult and that makes people scared of me, but I know that however people see me or view me is irrelevant all that matters is how I see myself. And right now, I can’t see that..So what good is a psychic that can’t see?” Her words were rushed but he caught it all.

His eyes widened at her inner turmoil spilling out, her composure no longer kept but as droopy and scrambled as her own disposition.

But as quickly as she fell apart, she pieced herself together and stared at him with a sense of determination. “Which is why it doesn’t matter how anyone views you, how do you view yourself?”

He thought over this questions almost every day, he looked at every mirror, every reflectable object, every old photo of himself and his parents, yet everyday he couldn’t see himself in that person that stared back at him.

The silence lingered for only a second as Wednesday stood up once again, “You asked me what you should do that night..” She said sternly. “And I finally have an answer for you.” She said her eyes piercing into his own curious ones.

“I think your an Addams…And you should do whatever you want.” She said earnestly.

He processed her words for only a second before standing up, “What’s your name?” He asked her quickly before she could walk away.

She turned looking at him oddly for only a second before a hint of realization struck her face. “I’m Wednesday Addams, And You?” She said holding out her hand the faintest of smile gracing the corners of her lips, if anyone blinked they would’ve missed it.

“I’m Tyler Galpin - Addams, Nice to meet you.” He said taking her hand and shaking it with confidence he hadn’t had before.

“Meet? Yes, Nice?…Never. Tyler Galpin Addams..Well, it pains me to say it just might suit you..” She smirked before releasing his hand and walking away.
