Work Text:
Lucas smiles as he hears his teamates cheering around him. He can’t believe they won!
It’s a mix of chaos after that, the rest of the guys on the team are all going out to some party but he rejects the offer and instead hangs back to wait for his friends. People slowly walk out of the gym with grins on their faces, but he tries to see past them, looking around to try and spot someone he knows, as the rest of the high schoolers slowly leave the gym.
He looks around the stadium, waiting to see a friendly face that will congratulate him, but… no one’s there.
Not one of his friends made it.
And yeah, he kind of gets it; Max had an appointment with the school counsellor, and his other friends all had D&D on at the same time as Basketball, so they probably weren’t going to make it anyway.
Still, a part of him had just been clinging to the hope that someone would show up.
Maybe.
He’d played well, even scoring the winning goal so surely its only fair that someone could have made it.
The empty hall isn’t getting any less quiet though, so he just resigns himself to the fact that life isn’t always fair.
He goes over to get his rucksack which is only the floor off by the side, to distract himself from moping, and hurriedly checks that all his stuff is there. It it, and he sighs before reluctantly slinging it over his arm.
“Lucas!”
Suddenly someone crashes into his side and wraps their arms around him. He looks at them in surprise, only to see his boyfriends joyful face grinning at him.
“Will!” He laughs, hugging Will back and holding on tightly, until he remembers that unfortunately they both need to be able to breathe, so he loosens his grip and leans back slightly to look at Will.
Wills almost the same height now, but Lucas feels secretly grateful that he’s still slightly taller than him. It means that he’s able to lean down and press a kiss to the top of Wills forehead, so he does so, smiling at the way Will lets out a little chuckle and his eyelashes flutter closed for a moment.
He’s standing close enough that Lucas can almost count the freckles that are scattered across his nose, a little more pronounced now that winter is over. They’re like a constellation and without thinking, Lucas moves his hand ghost over Wills cheek, finger tracing the dots.
“That tickles!” Will laughs, nose scrunching up in that cute way little way that he does sometimes. Frankly, it’s adorable. Lucas quickly looks all around, but when it’s clear that they’re all alone, he leans forward and peppers Will with kisses.
Will goes light red and batts him away with his hand, so Lucas relents and leans back again.
Clearly Will doesn’t mind too much, though, because he studies Lucas for a moment, before shifting forward and firmly kissing him on the mouth. Lucas kisses back, but he can’t help smiles against Wills lips, it hasn’t been long but he can’t help feeling like he’s missed the other boy.
They stop kissing, but then Lucas bends down slightly to ensure that his arms are wrapped securely around Will, before straightening up and lifting him into the air, whirling him around in a circle.
Will looks out of breathe by the time he puts him down. Lucas simply smiles at him, slinging back on his rucksack on his shoulder, and offering a hand out for Will to hold. Will takes it and gives it a quick squeeze, as the walk out of the gym together.
“Did Eddie move D&D to a different night, then?” Lucas asks suddenly.
Will frowns a little “No, he said to just find a substitute for us, and I think they managed to get Steve and Erica to play. That’s why Mike and Dustin aren’t here.”
“Right.” Lucas replies
Wills smile falters for a second, a brief shadow of doubt passing behind his eyes, but that’s about the last thing that Lucas wants.
“That’s okay, as long as you’re here.” Lucas says, nudging him. He can’t help but grin at the way the start of Wills frown disappears and his cheeks flushing a light red, instead.
It still feels kind of surprising to him that Will always seems so enamoured by the slightest things; like briefly brushing together when they walk next to each other, or when they subtlety link their pinkies under the table when they’re hanging out with the rest of their friend group.
They’ve also discovered that as well as blushing a lot, Will tends to rub the back of his neck when just as a nervous habit. That’s why Lucas has to put all his efforts into not flirting with Will whenever they’re around the party because otherwise their friends would freak out and start panicking about the upside down or the mind flayer coming back.
Except now it’s just the two of them alone together.
He holds the door open for Will, giving him a mock bow as Will starts to tease him about being ‘such a gentleman’.
They walk through the empty school hallways together, and Will quickly checks that there’s no one else around to catch them before slipping his arm around Lucas waist, and leaning his head against his shoulder in a way that makes Lucas’s heart flutter slightly in his chest.
He wonders if Will can hear his heartbeat. He has noticed, that his boyfriend sometimes does rest his head on his chest to listen to his heartbeat; it’s probably because of the time that Will spent in the upside down all alone when he went missing a few years ago. Lucas isn’t really sure if that’s the reason, but he finds the habit kind of cute, the little smile that always appears on Wills face.
They’re similiar in that way though, because one of the things that scares him is the possibility that he might one day lose Will again, except this time for good.
If anything happened to him- well, he doesn’t even want to think about that.
So Lucas banishes that thought to the back of his mind, instead leaning forward slightly to press a kiss to Wills forehead.
“Love you.” He says softly to Will, even though they’re all alone with each other he can’t help but always worry that someone will find out about them being together. Maybe it will be alright to be open about who they are one day, but for now they have to keep that secret hidden from the rest of the world.
Will looks at him for a moment, brown eyes filled with trust and happiness as he stands on his tip toes to press a kiss to his boyfriend’s lips.
“I know” he replies, a smile lighting up his face as he gives Lucas’s hand a another small squeeze, “I love you too.”
