Kanto: The beginning steps

Summary:

Since old times it has been a tradition to go on a journey and capture and tame those beasts we have been living with.

But what does it take to be a good trainer? What does it take to reach your own goals?

And what is even the bond that a human can form with them?

What is the meaning of the true bond they can have?

Green wants to find this out, but his journey is by far an ordinary one. Alongside making friends he would deny under any other circumstances and finding out more about his family history, they all have to bond together-
To take on a threat that might cause mayhem in all of Kanto.

And leave the future of their region up in the air.

Notes:

Hey Guys!
I have been writing and noting ideas for my version of Pokemon for so many years and constantly stopped and started again. By now I though it is too late to do this story, because it would be a long and ongoing one, and I do have other projects to tackle, but I just cannot stop thinking about this and now I just will get started.
Ps English is not my first language, it's more like my 3rd so if anything is grammatically off, that might be why. Feel free to correct me. Also I have no idea how the tagging works, it's a lot. I might add more and more as time passes.

Disclaimer:
I do not own Pokemon, any of its characters, or any of the concepts presented.
The OCs added to the mix however are all mine.
And since the characters vary in their personality in all the different media they are presented in, I will take my liberties with that too. So maybe some of the characters don't fit what you believe their personalities should be like so please keep that in mind.
Also, there are great changes to the depiction of the legendary Pokemon and their mythos. So please keep that in mind,

When I came up with the ideas, I was thinking about a Pokemon story that fits a lot more into the general Shone-type of action-adventure and deep focus on the story and the plot that happens. For that purpose, I believe that one has to distance oneself from the game mechanics and its logic.
The story is still partially inspired by the manga series and Pokemon Masters.
One more note, most of the characters will have their original Japanese names.

With that all said, please enjoy the read.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: An unlikely encounter

Chapter Text

Since old times humans have been in constant conflicts with powerful creatures. Creatures of varying sizes, abilities, and strengths. They were so out of the ordinary, so intimidating that they had been terribly feared.

To be able to stand against them, and defeat them in battle is to prove your own worth.

Several cultures have created traditions for young ones to prove themselves. To journey among them and take them down.

Until one day, someone among them suggested something so egregious to them. So out of place that no one for a long while wanted to even think about it.

Instead of slaying those creatures, they were to tame them and harbor their strength for their people.

But how? How would they be able to control them? Stay safe from them?

Eventually, that thought gained trust. People listening and practicing the art of catching, rather than slaying.

A choice that would completely revolutionize our world, and how we would live with them.

Although the reason has changed over time, capturing them and going on a journey is a tradition still practiced today.

Several centuries later.

And today, when a teen shows enough promise, they will be allowed to be on a journey. Many subjects in school prepare them for that very moment.

A moment so special, that those who don't take upon it might even be ridiculed. Especially as a young boy.

The goal was to challenge the gyms and later the elite four. To become the champion. The most recognized trainer in all of the region- who would not want to do that?

As a young teen, Green was no different. Finally ready for his very own journey. Only a few days into it.

He was out here inside the forest area surrounding his hometown. Not far, maybe he should feel more of a sense of urgency. Other teens seem to feel pressured into going as fast as possible.

But he had work to do. Not just his own dreams to follow. There were lots of studies he had to do along the way.

He sat there, on the forest floor, watching and observing. Listening to the sounds around him.

It was oddly soothing. Oddly satisfying. No loud noise. No people to annoy him. Nothing.

Only the sound of his charmeleons breathing.

The little fella was right next to him, lying down on the ground. He got tired of waiting too long.

Probably was bored at this point. But at least he was patiently waiting. Green made sure his partner would be well-behaved.

His flaming tail swung back and forth. Luckily not hitting anything that could go up in flames.

Green was focused on his task, gaining pictures of the wildlife out here. Collect and compare the information he gathered with the already existing one his grandfather put down.

He was holding the red device next to him. A one of a kind at this point. One filled with all the work he was doing. All the work his grandfather and father did.

It was something special. Something unique.

While there are many books and documentation about all types of mons or most of them, the information tends to become outdated and just not correct at all.

To me it is very important to provide proper information to people. Oak started explaining to Green when he was still so little. “I want to have the most accurate information possible. For those who want to have them as their partners. By their side, it is important to understand their needs and habits. To provide them with the utmost care and everything they need. Some are more dangerous than others.

I want to have a device that has it all organized and for it to be as useful as possible. For now, I only have this one, but once this here is completed we can make more and help as many people as possible. And kemono's will also benefit from this.'

As he was working away, his lizard started getting more and more antsy. He usually hated standing still for too long, but Green was doing research. Luckily his partner was very well-behaved and would not act out on his own.

A trainer has to be aware of his partner's perks. Has to make sure they are not getting into trouble, or causing much at all. While battling is the main goal and getting stronger is important to them, they cannot just run around and cause trouble out here in nature. There has to be a time and place for everything.

Suddenly he hears leaves rustling. Heavy footsteps approached them. Heavier than the monsters that usually reside here.

Green was on alert. His partner listened carefully. Eyeing his trainer. Waiting for an order.

Green waited for a moment to see what exactly they were up against.

It is a heracross.

Not a native species. It is unusual to approach a person with a fire type by their side.

Desensitized to humans. Or natural instincts. Must have belonged to someone.

Probably randomly abandoned around here.

What a pain.

His charmeleon instantly perked up. It took him no time to switch into battle mode.

The heracross was not lacking all natural senses as it took a defensive stance upon charmeleon's hostility.

Luckily for them, they do have an advantage, but depending on how strong this thing was trained, it might still be a challenge.

Heracross can be fast, and physically strong. He will have to take that into consideration.

I can't have him blast fire around here. That might cause more harm.

He waited patiently for the other one to make the first move. Maybe this can be fixed peacefully?

But Green glanced behind the bug type.

The plants are ripped out, some are crushed. Tree bark has been ripped open to get to the sap. As a non-native species, this heracross is causing a lot of destruction. Green probably cannot have it stay here. He will need to catch it.

At the same time, he could not help but smile.

The battles were suspenseful. Adrenaline starts to kick in and get the excitement going.

His partner loves it. Lives for it.

Most of the kemonos naturally tend to battle. Even the ones tamed are no different.

He caught his partner's eye, he was calm. Ready. Waiting for any order.

Just then heracross jumped into action. Fast.

It had a speed that one would not expect from a creature of that shape.

“Watch out!”

Charmleon jumped away from the attack, narrowly avoiding it. The ground underneath left with a hole. This will be interesting.

The fire lizard's tail started burning stronger, as excitement kicked in.

“Use your claws!”

Charmeleon jumped back at the opponent. Sharp clause aimed at it. Heracross avoided them, only receiving shallow scratches, it took the moment to use its head horn and ram him.

Charmeleon went to the ground. Hard and painful.

“Damn it!”

that thing is stronger than expected, but as one who was trained, he should not do too well without a partner.

“use your tail!”

And his partner swung his burning tale at the opponent. The flames scared the bug. He backed off, afraid of being hit. This moment was perfect, heracross lost his own momentum. But hurting it too much won't be good. He needs to catch this one and possibly bring it to a center.

Use ember! Not too strong.”

it worked. The pain of the flames has the heracross all panicked. He was running into trees until it eventually fainted. A good tactic, but he did risk a fire to spread. As of now, he had no water type to counter the flames.

Luck was on his side though.

No fires.

He halted for a moment to see if the bug type would get back up or not.

It didn't.

So he slowly approached it. Checking if it was still breathing. It was.

The burn seems a little intense, hopefully, it won't be too much of an issue. He checked it further. There is nothing on it that suggests it would still belong to someone.

It must have been released.

He pulled out his Pokeballs. They were a handy device, with some downsides here and there, but that might be fixed in the future.

He pulled out a corresponding ring. The sensor on the ring reacts to the sensor on the ball. And in response, the ring will shrink with the mon and then be able to fit in the ball.

It was a handy and revolutionary way of capturing and bringing them with them. But that is also a little bit risky. You had to knock out the mon for it to work.

And even then, they had to be let out frequently, otherwise oxygen supplies might run out.

There were still things left to be desired. But it worked for now.

He captured it. What to do now? He may collect data on it before giving it to a shelter.

Finally, the task was over and he could continue on his own journey.

He pets his charmeleon.

“Good job buddy.”

….

Suddenly something strange happened. Green watched as his items started floating up. Above his head. Out of reach. Even his dex.

How?

He looked in pure confusion. How could this be possible?

Suddenly they started flying off in the same direction. Even the Pokedex that was just in his hands. Damn it! He thought as he instinctively ran after them. His fire lizard was on alert. It must have sensed something was off.

They ran for a good distance until a clearing was in sight. He saw the blinding light, among all the shadowy trees. What could be there?

Was this a person messing around with his partner?

This seems to be the doing of a psychic.

As he reached his point. His eyes widened in shock.

He froze in place. No way! He thought.

Never could this happen to him right at the beginning. Right at the start of his adventure. Yet here he was. Seeing the small pink creature floating above. Mindless and in pure joy with its new toys.

Had he not seen the cave paintings, and the small amount of research his grandfather did, Green would not have believed it.

It was Mew.

PS. I am not the best at writing battle scenes so please bear with me.
I'll get better.
