Work Text:

It’s surprisingly quiet at night in the strange town of South Park, because at the end of the day it’s nights like these that the residents crave and yet don’t have enough of. No giant animals taking over the world, no aliens trying inhabiting their planet, no one trying anything. Just… Quiet. Sure the people here have eventually grown used to the odd occurrences but everyone still needs a break, and tonight is one of those.

Fridays are Stan and Kyle’s weekly sleepover days, and this week they’re crashing at Stan’s.

Stan looks out the window and not to his surprise, it’s dark as hell out there, it is pretty late. So the two are just laying in his bed, sharing whispered conversations and hushed giggles, eventually waiting for sleep to come and take them. Right now they’re quietly staring at the ceiling, the moon as their only light source.

“It’s quiet tonight,” Stan thought, as he looked over to his super best friend who isn’t saying anything either. In the midst of the quiet he takes the time to appreciate Kyle’s features in the moonlight. The way the light bounces off his fiery red curls, the way the moon highlights his hooked nose, the way his emerald green eyes shimmer in the moonlight, the way his lips shine under the light of the moon. Stan wonders what it would be to feel those lips on his.. wait. What?

Has Kyle always looked this nice? Yeah of course he has, he’s popular(-ish) for a reason. It’s okay to appreciate another man’s beauty, yeah it’s not gay like that. He’s just admiring his super best friend’s jaw dropping-ly amazing features, that’s all. It’s then when Kyle turns his head to face Stan with his all of moonlit beauty, catching him staring.

“What dude?” Kyle says chuckling, going slightly red in the face. Flustered, Stan blabs a response.

“You’re cute.”

“What?”

“I said you look like a fruit.”

“That doesn’t even make sense.”

“Whatever dude.” Stan says as he looks away punches Kyle’s shoulder lightly, still blushing.

He stares at the ceiling while he thinks, thinking can be a dangerous thing to do. Why did he think Kyle looked so pretty? Why now after all this time? Did he always feel this warm around Kyle? Wasn’t Wendy supposed to make him feel this warm? Has Wendy ever made him feel like this? Did he even love Wendy? She never made him feel like this in a long time. Maybe this’ll be the time they broke up for good. When was the last time he loved Wendy? Well it obviously must’ve been before high-school, maybe early 7th grade.. it’s been so long Stan could barely rememb—

“Damn Stan, what you thinking so hard about?” Kyle teased. The sound of the ginger’s voice next to him snapped him out of his thoughts.

“I was just thinking about Wendy and stuff.” From the corner of his eye Stan could’ve probably seen the way Kyle seemed to almost deflate, if he wasn’t so busy sorting his thoughts.

“Well what about her specifically?” Kyle prodded, Stan knew he could tell his best friend. He’d know what to do and what to say, but for some odd reason he hesitated.

“Stan?” said Kyle, concerned by the silence.

“I don’t think I’m in love with her anymore.”

“Man you said that last time.” Kyle said as he chuckled.

“Yeah well I mean if this time.” Stan retorted quickly, propping himself up on his elbows to face Kyle.

He continued, no emotion present in his voice. “I don’t think I loved her for a while.” Causing the ginger to go into a momentary shock. Stunning the ginger

“What makes you say that dude?” Kyle says, recovering from said shock.

“I don’t know man, I guess I just put it together but, when we’re together, I just don’t.. you know? Feel that spark anymore. I don’t get that warm feeling when I’m around her. (I feel it around you..)

When I look at her talk I don’t feel moved by her dedication to the topic. (Like how I could listen to you go on and on for hours..) When we’re holding hands it feels like an expectation instead of something I actually want to do myself.

Every time we’re alone we argue about stupid shit and I realized I hated it. I hated the feeling, I hate the pressure. In public we looked like the perfect couple but in reality….” Stan’s voice trailed off at the end, only then does he notice the lack of oxygen and takes a deep breath.

“Wow.” Kyle finally spoke, astonished by his rant.
“Yeah.” Stan replied.

They fall into a silence once more, this time a little more awkward. It’s pretty normal, well at least tolerable for the two. Stan’s mind is racing at this point, “I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep anytime soon.” He said to no one particular. He looked over to his right to see Kyle still looking at him.

“How about we get out of here?” Kyle suggested as he stood up, offering his hand to Stan. No more words were needed as he grabbed his hand and left the house together, quickly and quietly.
