Work Text:
Eddie and Steve are sitting on the football field, Steve propped on the field goal, nursing a bottle of whiskey in a brown paper bag. Eddie’s laying flat on his back, smoking a cigarette. It’s late, so late it’s almost early, but Steve doesn’t want to tear his eyes away from Eddie.
For the most part, Steve never lets his eyes linger on Eddie’s form for too long, he doesn’t let himself get sucked in by Eddie’s every curve and divot. It’s nights like this, nights where he’s drunk and particularly touch starved, that he allows himself to look. Eddie’s curls are splayed on the ground behind him, he’s like a work of art. He has a slight smile, exhaling as smoke comes out of his nose. He’s like a dragon, rare and beautiful.
“You gonna stare at me all night, Harrington?” Eddie raises an eyebrow, smirking but not quite looking over. Steve looks away, trying to save face.
“That shit’ll kill you, Munson.” Eddie laughs, grinding his cigarette against his boot and flicking it away.
“So will that bottle.” He sits up, fire in his eyes. Steve loves when Eddie gets excited about something, he gets this look in his eyes, like he’s the king of the world. “Speaking of! Gimme.” Eddie reaches his hand out expectantly. Steve hands him the bottle, then lays down on his stomach closer to Eddie.
“Trade me.” Eddie smirks, taking out his pack and sticking a cigarette into Steve’s mouth. Steve craves the closeness to Eddie, he wants to scoot closer, but knows he’d ruin things.
“Never seen you smoke before, big boy. You been holding out on me?” Eddie puts a hand on the back of Steve’s head, lighting the cigarette easily. Steve wants to be wrapped in Eddie’s voice forever, wants Eddie’s hands on him, wants to taste him- Stop it, Steve.
Steve inhales, smoke filling his lungs. He doesn’t cough, he blows the smoke out, making rings in the air. “Never.” Steve smirks at Eddie, who’s taking a swig from the bottle. Then he sets it down, somersaulting to a standing position and spinning around, arms outstretched.
“Eddie Munson is a freak!” He screams to the sky, flipping off the universe. Steve can’t help but laugh.
“What are you doing?” Steve shouts from across the field, laughing at Eddie.
“Had to remind the world, just in case they forgot.” He smiles. In truth, Eddie had wanted to tell Steve something- the thing- and Eddie refuses to ruin his friendship. Steve jumps up, still smoking, and god Eddie has never seen anything as attractive as Steve blowing out perfect rings of smoke.
“Steve Harrington is a freak by association!” Steve yells suddenly, spinning around, til he collapses onto his back, Eddie flopping down opposite of him. Eddie studies Steve, the way his face is flushed, how he’s smiling so widely. He offers the cigarette to Eddie, who accepts it. They lay there, passing the cigarette back and forth, looking at the sky.
“So, uh… how’s Nancy?” Eddie mutters after a while, and Steve really wishes he hadn’t brought her up.
“Dunno, she’s been hanging out with her new boyfriend recently, haven’t seen her in a while.” He whispers looking at Eddie.
“Why’d you break up?” Eddie’s looking at him like he’s trying not to hope for anything at all.
“We were both more interested in other gu- people.” Eddie doesn’t miss the mess up. Could he… could Steve ‘the hair’ Harrington be into guys? Maybe even guys like Eddie? Eddie wasn’t going to drop it. He takes a long drag from the cigarette before passing it back.
“What kind of people?” Eddie whispers between them, catching the way Steve’s blush rises.
“Well, um, Nancy’s with this guy, Jonathan, so I guess that’s who she’s into-“
“Steve.” His voice cuts through the night, gentle yet firm. “I wasn’t asking about Nancy.” Steve pauses, looking over at Eddie, before turning his head back to the sky. He takes a long drag from the cigarette before stomping it out and hopping up.
“I should get going, see you around, Eds.” He starts walking away.
“Steve, wait.” Eddie stands up, walking towards Steve. Steve pauses, looking at Eddie. “Don’t go.” He whispers.
Steve stays there, not saying a word, just looking at each other. “She found out I like a guy. That’s why we broke up. Well, I guess ‘found out’ isn’t the right word, I told her. I told her, and she told me that she kissed Jonathan so it all kind of worked-”
“Who.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement, a command if you will.
“Eds, don’t make me-”
“Steve.” Eddie steps closer, hands cupping Steve’s jaw. “I need you to tell me, I need to hear you say it. Say his name, Steve. Please.” Eddie is an inch away from Steve, breath ragged as his eyes scan Steve’s face, a pleading look in his eyes.
“Eds-”
“Please, say his name.”
“It’s you. Eddie Munson.” Steve blurts out. Eddie’s breath hitches and he moves closer. “It’s always been you, Eds.” He breathes out.
“Can I kiss you?” Eddie whispers, a smile splitting his face as his thumbs trace Steve’s cheekbone.
“Please?” And Eddie does, and it’s everything Steve’s ever dreamed of. Eddie’s lips are soft against his, gentle and caring. Steve presses himself against Eddie, needing him in his entirety. Eddie seems to feel the same, pulling Steve closer to him. Steve pushes his hands into Eddie’s hair as Eddie’s hands find Steve’s hips and thighs. Eddie whines softly and Steve pulls back slightly. Steve breathes deeply, eyes scanning the man under him. “Hi.”
“Hi.” Eddie responds, meeting Steve’s eyes. “I-um…” Eddie smiles shyly, not quite meeting Steve’s gaze. Steve grabs his chin and directs his eyes up.
“Yes?” Steve whispers between them, smiling widely.
“I have been wanting to kiss you for a very long time, Steve Harrington and I’d very much like to do it again.”
“Then do it.” Eddie crashes his lips into Steve’s, rougher this time, like he’s hungry for Steve. Eddie’s teeth discover Steve’s bottom lip and bites down, gently. When Steve lets out a small whimper, Eddie smirks against his lips.
“You think you’d end your night kissing the freak of Hawkins?” Eddie leans forward, making Steve blush.
“I’ve always wanted to, never had the guts.” Steve smiles, before pulling back and walking away. “And who said the night’s over?” He calls over his shoulder, making Eddie run after him.
