“Jamis, my brother,” said Stilgar. “Rise.”
He was still. He did not want to stand. This was not part of his duty to his people, and anything beyond one's duty was a waste, was abhorrent, was the antithesis of what it meant to be Fremen. Jamis felt his body rebel, even though his heart was conflicted. He trusted Stilgar, had followed him into battle countless times. Had never once doubted that Stilgar was the right man to lead. But he could feel Jessica’s work in this, and wavered.
There was a hissing in his ear, a moment lost, and Jamis found himself standing.
“We should have known you, Mahdi,” Stilgar said, fist over his heart. “You were born to lead us.”
