Chapter 1: One

Chapter Text

The throne room was bustling; sounds of polished boots on marble floors, clicking of high heels, the rustling fabric of everyones' suits and dresses. Ena is used to this scenery, though. She sighed, sitting on her throne, the sunset shone through the stained colorful glass slightly blinding her vision.

Ena strained her eyes, glancing around the room once more. She felt the weight of a thousand eyes on her, talking about her, doubting her. She scoffed at their egotistical mannerisms, it's not as if they know better than her.

Let them talk, Ena thought bitterly, at the end of the day it's between me and my father.

As her gaze roamed the crowded room, she realized it had been several moments since she had last seen him— her father, King Shinonome. His seat, between her own and the rest of her family's, sat empty. Her fingers tightened around the ivory armrests of her throne before she stood up, and brushed her dress lightly, her movements only showing a respectable grace.  Though, it was a far cry from the calm she could only wish to project.

While she made her descent from her throne, the once booming conversations became hushed whispers. Ena didn't bother to acknowledge it. She could hear the loud steps of her heels as she continued walking, only to be stopped by her father's advisor grabbing her shoulder gently.

Ena turned around, slightly startled, to meet his gaze.

"Looking for your father, I presume?" he asked, his voice low and soft.

Ena nodded, her lips tightened into a thin line. "Yes, it's been a small while since I've seen him. Would you happen to know where he is?"

The advisor nodded his head, "His chambers, Your Highness, though I send you with caution. Your father— the King is preoccupied with matters of the court at this moment."

Ena understood, she knew exactly what he was preoccupied with.

"Thank you, Lord Tenma. I'll make my way to him now." Ena turned with a bow, and paced toward her father's chamber.

Her mind had begun to race. Matters of the court... what utter bullshit, her head raced with an overcoming anxiety.

As she moved further and further away from the energetic crowd, she heard less and less chatter. Her steps echoed loudly, the crown upon her short wavy brown hair begun to feel heavier the closer she neared her father's room. It felt like a constant reminder of the burden placed onto her— one she had never asked for.

Ena had heard enough of the kingdom's gossip to know exactly what matters her father was busy with. Suitors. The word itself left Ena feeling sick. The implication that she didn't know what was best for the kingdom, that she would have to lead with a man directing her every move— the entire kingdom saw her as nothing more than a pawn to play in their own little game of chess.

It made her feel sick. It made her feel enraged.

Her finger's twitched, itching to rip at the expensive fabric of her gown, itching to destroy the facade of grace and nobility she has wore for a long nineteen years.

Ena's heels clicked on the cold marble floor, each step heavier than the last as her mind was filled with burdening thoughts. A suitor— a husband, She grimaced at the thought. She didn't believe she needed anyone behind her to help her rule. Besides, her brother had made the decision to give up the throne already, why hadn't she been given the chance to decide something for herself as well?

The more she thought about it, the more she loathed the concept entirely. Was she really just a means to continue the royal bloodline? Had she no choice in her own future? Her stomach begun to churn.

Ena arrived to the doors which entered her father's chamber. She glanced to both sides of the door, two knights stood stoically on either side. She gently bowed at their presence, who acknowledged her with a nod.

"Did you wish to enter, Your Highness?" A guard with a gentle, almost feminine voice asked her.

Ena hesitated, taking a moment to collect herself before responding. She straightened her posture as much as possible, before turning her attention to the guard who spoke to her.

"Yes," she replied, her voice steady despite her rush of feelings within, "I need to speak with my father."

The guard nodded and gently pushed the door open, revealing her father's chamber ahead of her. The room was dimly lit by a few candles, drapery and tapestries covering the walls. King Shinonome stood with the Queen and another advisor, his back turned against the door.

Ena stepped inside, the door closing softly behind her. Her steps were cushioned by the rug positioned underneath the majority of the room's floor. She paused for a moment, waiting for her father's attention to turn to her.

The King turned slowly, a heavy silence drowned the room. It felt suffocating to Ena. She stood still, keeping her upright posture, but she felt her insides twist in anxiety. Her crown felt almost unbearable atop her head.

"Ah, Ena," her father stiffened, his voice carrying a harsh edge of authority. "I've been meaning to speak with you."

Ena winced at his words, preparing to defend herself. The queen and the advisor stepped slightly to the side, knowing this wasn't their conversation.

"Yes, father, I know exactly-"

"Ena," he growled, "This has been the sixth suitor you've turned down now. We simply cant go through every single kingdom until you decide you've found the perfect man."

"Father, please, it's not about that!" Ena hissed, her hands gripped at the skirt of her dress in turmoil.

"This simply won't be a discussion anymore, we already have dealt with enough regarding your brother, why can't you make this easy for us?"

Ena's mother grasped the King's shoulders gently. The advisor stepped forward.

"Your Highness," the advisor interjected, "It's important that the kingdom have a strong leader behind such a beautiful Queen."

Ena felt her chest tighten, "Lord Inoue, respectfully-"

The king cut her off, "Ena, Lord Inoue has kindly offered his hand for a second time, and we are urging you to make a good decision here."

The advisor smiled at Ena, reaching out his hand to Ena. Ena grimaced, pushing it away. Her body tensed, she curled her hands into fists. It felt like a trap.

The Queen released her grasp on her husband, and moved towards her daughter, gently cupping her hands in her own. Ena slightly melted into her mother's touch. She rescinded, however, she needed to finish this discussion once and more all.

"No, father, I simply won't have this!" She urged. "It was never about the kingdom— just your pride. I don't want to marry some stupid suitor, I don't want to be used by a man to control a bunch of innocent people- I- I-" she begun to stutter in frustration.

The King's gaze hardened, his brows furrowing in frustration. Ena's mother felt the tension between the both of them.

"Ena, honey," the Queen murmured gently, "maybe you need some time to think it through. Why don't you head back to your own chamber, okay?"

Ena's chest felt even tighter hearing her mother's words, frustration tensing up in her throat. She wanted to argue, to shout, to do anything but sit there and accept it. But standing there, she understood completely— her word held no authority over any of them. Something within her faltered.

Ena felt a warmness dripping down her cheeks. She picked up her hands to wipe away her tears, before she turned around and rushed out of the room straight to her own.

Behind her, one of the knight which stood guard had faltered slightly themself. They overheard the conversation, and witnessed the Princess briskly walking away and she quietly sobbed.

What a bunch of jerks, they thought to themself.

They stood still, though, as much as they decided they would've liked to follow the Princess and comfort her.

She would be perfectly capable to lead on her own, forcing her to marry some man is just— barbaric.

No matter what the knight thought, it meant nothing when their only duty was to protect the royal family. Their opinion, their thoughts, their feelings— these things weren't acknowledged by the royalty.

Besides that, Ena had gotten halfway towards her own chambers. She stumbled slightly over her hurried steps, the familiar walls around her feeling as if they were closing in on her.

Tears kept blurring her vision, but she had kept wiping them away. She could still hear the hundreds of visitors in the throne hall, but she knew her father would be on his way to excuse them all soon enough.

She reached her chambers, throwing open her doors and slamming them behind her as she entered. She didn't wait for a maid or a servant, she just began tearing off her clothes and accessories.

One by one, her crown, her gloves, her gown, she removed it all, it was too heavy of her hurting soul currently.

Ena's breath was ragged and in-sequential. Her clothing sat lifeless on the floor. She picked up her crown, her fingers ran across the cold surface— before she chucked it across the room.

She didn't want the weight of jewels— the weight of being a queen, of being married off, of being a pawn with no voice of her own.

Ena fell to her knees, the tears rushed out of her eyes and down her face. She brought her hands up to wipe away the wetness, but it was no use as it was unending. She just couldn't stop the tears this time, no matter how hard she tried. Her chest tightened as she gasped for air, she just wanted to go to bed and forget about it all.

She gathered her senses, although the tears still poured out of her, she begun getting ready for bed. She brushed her hair, cleaned herself, and threw on a night dress.

Each movement felt heavy to her, but she powered through it— anything to forget about this.

She glanced in the mirror as she finished tying up her silk night dress. Her eyes were red and puffy, nowhere near the graceful appearance she kept up for everyone else. She didn't mind, she couldn't bother to care right now.

She lugged back to her bed, but paused before lying down. She glanced out the chamber window, the moonlight glistening in her eyes. It was peaceful for a moment.

Ena closes her eyes, just for a moment, feeling—

A distant rumble.

She opened her eyes and looked around in confusion. She felt more rumbling, before hearing a loud explosion, followed by several smaller explosions.

She stood in shock, unsure of what to do.

What the- She couldn't even finish thinking before a figure rushed in her room and grabbed her arm.

"Princess, we need to leave— now."

"Princess, we need to leave— now."

The ground beneath Ena's feet trembled as another explosion shook the castle. Her heart raced, her ears pulsing in pain from the loudness of the sounds. She had no time to think, no time to process. The knight's grip tightened around her arm as they began to pull her.

Ena's stance faltered, she fell into a run as she followed the knight out of her room. Their pace was quick, Ena found it hard to match, but in a state of urgency she did her best.

Ena heard more crashing, both below them and above. The sounds of frantic footsteps almost deafened by the much louder sounds of the attack.

She gasped for breath, but continued running with the strange knight for safety.

"Who- who is attacking? What's happening?!" Ena tried to keep her footing as they made their way towards a back exit of the castle. She couldn't make sense of anything.

The knight glanced over their shoulder, before putting their attention to the exit in front of them.

"Not right now, Your Highness."

Ena's thoughts raced, peering outside the exit she saw several servants and townspeople running out in the distance. That didn't matter right now. They approached the exit, an elevated platform made specifically for emergencies— it was quite a drop, though.

Ena stopped before the edge of the platform, frantically looking toward the knight accompanying her. "Are you mad? I can't just jump, this is too high!"

The knight dismissed her worries, and made the jump, landing on their knees gracefully. The stood back up, offering their hand.

"I can help you down, or I can catch you."

Ena's breath caught in her throat. Another explosion appeared close behind her, almost knocking her down itself. There's no other way. Ena gripped the skirt of her night dress before jumping herself, into the arms of the knight who was waiting for her.

Her heart pounded, her hands felt like they were burning. The moment her feet hit the ground, the knight grabbed her arm once again, running far away from the castle.

The two figured reached the tree line nearing the castle. Sounds of destruction behind them seemed to quiet, leaving only the crackling of large fires and  distant yelling. They stopped, and Ena fell to her knees gasping for air. When she finally caught her breath, she turned around and saw— it was gone. What was once a magnificent castle had been turned into a pile of rubble engulfed in flames. Towers were crumbled, banners flying away in the wind, smoke bellowed in the sky.

Everything, it all finally sunk in for Ena. The weight of reality crushed her, she felt her shoulders give out.  She was given a moment to finally break, and she did. She sobbed, but no sounds came out. The knight watched hesitantly.

After several moments of silent sobbing, Ena spoke up.

"My brother... my mother..." she sobbed, "M-My father..." She couldn't hold it in. How could she?

My entire family, she thought, they could be gone...

The knight took off their gloves and threw them down, kneeling next to Ena to place a hand on her shoulder. Ena's skin against the knight hand felt flaming, she shook intensely.

The knight tightened their grip on the Princess's shoulder, pursing their lips inside their helmet. What do I even say? The scent of burning wood and dust filled their nostrils. She trembled beneath the knights hand, hot with panic, still sobbing to herself. The knight swallowed. They had trained for battle, for strategy, for protecting the royal family— but not this. They didn't train to watch another person's world to collapse in front of them, really, their own world too. It felt impossible to console the grieving princess.

The weight of Ena's grief pressed against them, everything felt suffocating. The knight hesitated. What can I say to possibly fix this? They grasped for an answer. Could words even help?

The knight exhaled sharply, glancing back towards the burning castle. The smoke rose, quickly, it wouldn't take long before it was nearly inhabitable in that area, it would be unsafe to breathe. Ena deserved to grieve, but not here, they had to leave.

"Princess," the knight finally spoke up, they made their voice as soft as possible. "We have to go."

Ena's fingernails dug into the dirt below her. She clearly heard, but she didn't listen.

The knight released their grip on the Princess, stepping back but watching closely. She was still trembling, but her sobs were nothing more than shaky breaths now. The knight clenched their jaw. They didn't want to rush the princess, but the longer they stayed, the more dangerous it became.

"Please, Your Highness." They hesitated. "I know this is—" What? Horrific? Devastating? They gave up on finding a word. "Look, we can't stay here."

Ena still didn't move, but she looked up at the knight.

"I won't force you," they almost whispered. "But you'll die if you stay here. King Shinonome wouldn't like that."

Silence stretched between them. The knight might've said they weren't going to force her, but they sure as hell weren't leaving without her.

Ena inhaled shakily.

"...Where?" Ena's voice was raw, shaky, almost impossible to hear past the crackling fires.

The knight helped pull her up, before pointing towards the woods. "If we cut through here there's a village not too far. Maybe a days worth of walking."

Ena swayed slightly on her feet, unsteady. The knight held onto her arms. She looked dazed and her eyes felt empty. She glanced back towards the castle once more, before sighing and turning her attention towards the knight that saved her.

She nodded lightly, she wasn't sure she could withstand a day's worth of walking but she knew she had to.

"We'll find out who did this, okay?"

Ena only nodded once more.

The night still held firmly to the Princess's arm, giving her a long look— although you couldn't see through their helmet. They felt unreadable to Ena, but it didn't matter, because after one long second they turned to lead Ena through the trees.

"Stay close to me," they instructed. "The woods may be safer than here, but not by much."

Ena didn't respond, she just followed suit, making their way into the woods. She felt anxious, she felt scared, but she also felt nothing. She moved her hands down and gripped onto the skirt of her night dress once more, feeling as though she may rip it if she continued. But she didn't care, she needed something to keep herself grounded.

As they ventured forward, Ena felt weaker. They were barely a few steps in before she felt like collapsing. Watching the princess continue to stumble, they grabbed her arm once more.

The knight mumbled, barely audible. "Do you need me to carry you, Princess?"

Ena looked up at the knight and frowned slightly. "No- I got it, I can do this."

The knight sighs and allows Ena to follow her again— before she falls onto the ground in exhaustion. The knight turns back around and their shoulders drop.

This is going to be a long trip.

The knight crouches down to pick up the fallen Princess, they put her on their back and stand up tall. Ena mumbles something under her breath, but the knight couldn't understand a word.

"Don't worry, Your Highness. Just rest, you can walk in the morning." With the knight's reassurance, the princess shortly fell asleep, her head resting on the knight's shoulder.

Poor Princess, they thought. But pity wouldn't matter now.

The knight continued walking into the woods, staggering slightly with each step they took.

Chapter Text

The morning was cold, it had barely reached sunrise. The knight had put Ena down from off their back— they started getting exhausted themself—, laying her down atop the coat they had on under their armor. It was the best they could do, they left in a hurry without many supplies.

The knight sat quietly, their back pressed against a tree. They had taken their armor off hours ago now, letting their short pink hair free and letting the rest of their body breathe. The chill of the morning air nipped at their now exposed skin, but they didn't mind. The cold was better than the weight of anxiety that has built up since last night.

They glanced over towards the sleeping Princess, who was curled up on the coat. Her chest rose and fell in shallow breaths, the sight was far more peaceful than what the two had just gone through. The Knights eyes lingered on her for one moment too long, before they pull their head away and focused on their surroundings.

Focus, Mizuki, they thought. Stay focused.

Mizuki place their head between their knees. Everything felt so suffocating right now, but they dare not show the Princess that they feel anxiety. Mizuki wrapped their arms around their legs, hugging themself tightly. They don't know what came over them to go out of their way to save the Princess, but now the weight of her life is left in their hands.

This newfound responsibility felt like a brick dropped onto them. They had always been taught to protect the royal family, it was their duty. But this— this was different. This wasn't following orders, this wasn't fighting. It's survival of both themself and Ena.

The knight exhaled shakily, before picking their head up, and brushing their hands through it in a smooth motion. They looked back down at Ena. She looked peaceful... beautiful. Mizuki batted the thought away.

No time for that, Mizuki scolded themself.

They had always admired Ena, though. Being a knight meant watching over the royal family, including the Princess. Seeing her, she had always felt so untouchable— but here she's so normal. Her hair is fallen over her face, breathing steadily, the morning light glistening on her skin. She was a regular person like Mizuki, right?

They tore their gaze away from her once again. They needed to stay alert until the Princess woke up.

Mizuki sighed and leaned their head against the rough bark of the tree. They closed their eyes, all they could feel was the pulsing ache of their body. Walking for so long with no break, especially with both armor and a Princess on their back, was exhausting.

The memories of the prior night kept replaying in their mind. It was horrific. People were screaming, running, the fire crackled loudly. They could still feel the suffocating heat of it all. Mizuki, rather than staying behind and fighting against an impossible battle, had followed instinct. Now, they were left with the aftermath of everything and a new responsibility.

Ena was safe now, but what else were they to do?

Mizuki pondered hard, but they couldn't come up with a plan— at least not yet. For now, all they could do was keep moving.

They opened their eyes, a quiet sigh escaping their lips. The sky had became a bright pale blue, the sun was shining almost entirely, animals were beginning to make their morning sounds. But to Mizuki, it felt frozen. Everything seemed normal, but nothing about this was normal.

Their hands were aching, theyd been gripping their sword all night. Their body urged for rest, but they couldn't. They had no idea if someone was after them, especially since the Princess escaped.

Mizuki stood up, sitting still seemed to only make the aches worse. They stretched, flexing their shoulders, arms, legs, anything that had possibly been hurting. It was time to put their armor back on. They begun sliding on their armor, piece by piece, until they were left with their helmet in their hands.

A small sound pulled Mizuki's attention away from it. A small, quiet inhale came from below where they stood.

They turned sharply, their gaze meeting Ena as she stirred in her sleep. The once sleeping Princess sat up suddenly, stretching slightly before she opened her eyes.

She sat still for a moment.

"Good morning, Princess," Mizuki said softly, as to not alert her.

Ena blinked, her eyes unfocused as she processed the situation around her. She looked around slightly, before noticing the coat underneath her. She grabbed it, and wrapped it around herself. She was shivering. Mizuki couldn't tell if it was from the cold or from the weight of everything setting in.

Mizuki watched her, unsure of what there was to say. Ena stayed silent, gripping the coat around her as her knuckles turned white. Her expression stood unreadable.

After a long moment of quiet, the Princess spoke. "So it was all real, wasn't it?"

Mizuki sighed, gripping their helmet tighter. "Yes."

Ena let out a shaky breath, she looked up at the knight. They didn't have their helmet on, so she had a view of their face now. The knight looked extremely feminine, but who was Ena to judge? Their face showed a tired composure, much alike to how Ena was feeling.

She looked away from the knight, dread setting in once more.

Her home was gone. Her family was gone.

She had nothing left. She had spent her whole life in that castle— sure she wasn't happy but she was safe. And now? She had nothing.

After a moment, the knight opened their mouth to speak. "We should keep moving." They adjusted their grip on their helmet, before gently sliding it back on.

Ena inhaled deeply, before picking herself up. She nodded. She grasped Mizuki's coat tighter around herself and took a step forward, her movements were stiff from the exhaustion she hadn't escaped yet.

Mizuki begun to walk towards their destination, making sure Ena was following closely behind. The sky above them had completely brightened now, breaking through the canopy of the trees above them. The fallen leaves below their feet crunched with every step they took, it was the only thing they could hear besides the distant rustling of wild animals.

Ena watched the knight in front of her. They were carefully scanning the surroundings in front of them, their hand was resting on something on their hip.

Ah, right, he's a knight, Ena remembered. Knights have swords...

The Princess had never been a fan of violence, but now she's slightly grateful to know they at least had an opportunity for safety.

Everything had stayed eerily quiet, it was uncomfortable to Ena. She followed the knight, her footsteps becoming more and more hesitant. The silence was unbearable, she felt as though she had to make some form of conversation.

"So, uhm, how much further do you think?" Ena finally asked.

Mizuki didn't turn back, just responded. "Hopefully we'll reach the village by nightfall, as long as we keep this pace."

Ena sighed to herself, her whole body was already sore and she was feeling sluggish. She wouldn't complain though, there wasn't any use to that.

"Okay, thank you Sir... uh..." Ena wasn't sure how to address the knight ahead of her.

The knight hesitated slightly before responding. "It's Akiyama."

Ena nodded her head, although the knight ahead of her couldn't see. "Sir Akiyama, thank you."

The knight didn't respond, they only continues walking.

As they moved further and further, the woods began to feel more dense. The air felt heavier, it was thick of the scent of damp dirt and leaves. It was quieter, too. Way too quiet.

Mizuki slowed their pace, their hand gripping their sword ever so slightly tighter. Ena noticed the shift.

"What's wrong?" Ena whispered.

The knight didn't respond, only stopping in their tracks and lifting a hand signaling the Princess to do the same. She obeyed without question, her breath catching in her throat.

In their silence— a rustle.

Not of an animal or the wind pushing through the leaves. No, this wasn't that.

The snapping of a twig was heard.

Ena tensed, her fingers curled tight into fists. Mizuki held their breath, shifting their stance, wrapping their fingers tightly around the grip of their sword.

Before they could even react, a figure rushed out of the trees ahead of them. Mizuki drew their sword, raising it to block an incoming strike. Ena fell back in shock.

Just before Mizuki could make a strike of their own, the figure ahead of them stopped.

"Wait," An unfamiliar voice announced. Mizuki stopped mid swing in confusion.

The figure ahead of them sheathed their sword.

"You're the princess— right?"

Chapter Text

The figure ahead of them sheathed their sword, stepping away from the Princess and the knight.

"You're the Princess— right?" The strange figure questioned, a tone of shock escaping their voice.

Ena glanced around in confusion before nodding. "Yes... I am Princess Shinonome."

Mizuki eased their stance lightly. Though, they didn't relax entirely. "Who are you?" They asked sharply.

The stranger ahead of them stood for a second, giving the pair a good moment to assess them. The figure dawned a few pieces of armor, though nowhere near a full set. They had a helmet on, hiding their face, but their body suggested they were a girl. The figure took off her helmet, revealing long purple hair and deep eyes, before responding.

"Mafuyu Asahina," she answered, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. "A knight— or so I'd like to call myself."

Mizuki narrowed their eyes. "You're not from our kingdom. What are you doing traveling this way?"

Mafuyu's stance was unwavering. "I heard about the attacks to the Shinonome kingdom— rumors that the entire family had perished." She looked away, with a hint of embarrassment in her eyes, "I came to investigate... but from the looks of it the rumors were wrong."

Ena's face fell, she furrowed her brows. "We... we were attacked. I don't even know that the rest of my family made it..."

Mizuki relaxed almost entirely, they put on a normal demeanor in hopes to coax more information out of the stranger.

"You're coming over from the village then, right?"

Mafuyu nodded. "Yes, I am. That's where I heard the rumors from."

Mizuki placed a hand on their hip. "Well, it would benefit you to know that there's nothing left of our kingdom. There simply isn't anything to investigate."

Mafuyu's eyes faltered a little, before Mizuki continued. "However, you can help us."

The purple-haired knight slightly straightened her stance. "Really?"

Mizuki's head nodded affirmatively.

"We were headed that way anyways. We need rest, supplies..." They glanced at Ena, "We also need better walking clothes for the Princess. You could join us, we'll continue our own investigation once we have the materials."

Ena looked at her knight before crossing her arms. "We- We barely know this woman! Are you sure?"

Mizuki shrugged. "I may not be prepared to fight against a group of treasons, but I am prepared to fight a... 'knight'."

The knight ahead of them grimaced slightly. "I'm not interested in betraying anyone."

The Princess turned a weary glance towards Mafuyu before turning back to Mizuki. She didn't quite know how to put her thoughts into words.

Mizuki met Ena's gaze through their helmet, their expression softening, although Ena wouldn't be able to see that entirely. "I understand your hesitation, Your Highness, but we don't have that much of a choice. We need help." They turned to Mafuyu, their voice firm. "However, we will be keeping an eye on you, at least until we can trust you."

Mafuyu nodded, her hair slightly swaying with the motion. "I understand." She slid her helmet back on.

"Well, if you're headed towards the village then I'll show you the way."

Mizuki and Ena nodded. The three of them began to walk together, a quiet tension lingering in the air. The Princess, still unsure of the new knight with them, walked closely to her own knight, almost bumping into them. She kept her head down, clutching the coat Mizuki had given her while she was asleep.

Ena looked up at her knight, gathering every detail about them that she could. Sir Akiyama looks so... alert. She lowered her head back down. I get it, I am too, a little bit.

The trio continued. Despite the sunlight glowing the trees around them, there was still an eerie stillness to the woods. The sounds of nature were barely audible this far out. Every step the group took seemed to echo in the distance.

The Princess shivered in anxiety. "It's really quiet..."

Mizuki glanced back at Ena quickly before returning their view ahead of them. "It is, but it's for the better. These woods are said to be dangerous, it's better that we're able to hear what's around us."

Ena nodded, though she felt no reassurance in Mizuki's words. The quiet made her uneasy. She stepped slightly closer to her knight.

Mafuyu, who had been leading the way, slowed her pace. She glanced over her shoulders at the two behind her. "I mean, that's true," she began. "Especially if the girls in the village were right."

Mizuki raised an eyebrow. "Right about what?"

Mafuyu looked back ahead of her. "Ah, well they were wrong about the Shinonome family, so I'd take it with a grain of salt now, but..."

Ena felt a pit form in her stomach, she instinctively grabbed onto Mizuki's arm. "But?" The Princess asked in a hushed, anxious voice.

"Well, there's stories of someone who lives out further into the woods, closer to the village. A weak looking woman, unsuspecting to most. The girls in the village say that she's a witch, attacking those who come across her by using an innocent image to guilt any travelers." Mafuyu said in a creepy tone.

Mizuki felt Ena's grasp on her arm. They lightly elbowed the knight ahead of her. "Hey, quit it. There's no witches anywhere near here, witchcraft was banned almost a decade ago."

Ena's spine shivered. A witch...

The purple-haired girl shrugged. "Well, I did say to take it with a grain of salt."

Ena glanced up at Mizuki, her fingers gripping tighter around the knights arm. "We shouldn't be worried, right, Sir Akiyama?"

Mizuki sighed, "Not at all. It's just silly townsfolk rumors." They kept their voice unwavering to give the Princess some comfort.

The Princess slightly nodded, attempting to dismiss any feeling of unease that had taken ahold of her.

The sun above them had begun to set, a darkness taking over the woods. Mafuyu spoke up, "We're close now, we should be there within the next hour."

A quiet took over— before being broken by the sound of distant conversation.

Not again, Mizuki thought. They weren't ready for another fierce confrontation.

The trio stopped in their tracks, shushing each other and hiding behind a large tree. In the distance they seen two figures, two short women.

A woman with a short pink haircut was talking in a bubbly manner to the other woman, with long silver white hair reaching to floor of the woods. The woman with white hair looked rather reserved and timid.

The group remained hidden, Ena had held closer to Mizuki and hid behind them slightly. They listened the best they could, although it seemed they had missed most of the conversation.

"...But it's serious this time! Really, really, really serious!" The pink-haired girl exclaimed.

The girl with white hair placed a hand on her face, slightly massaging her temple. "You always say that, Otori." She exhaled softly.

The girl called 'Otori' pouted, placing her hands on her hips. "But it's true! It's true I swear! The stars don't lie, Kanade!"

Kanade sighed, "The stars might not lie but they aren't always right. They haven't been for a while..."

Otori huffed before dropping her shoulders. "Just be careful practicing your magic now, okay? Nene would hate to lose a valuable customer."

Kanade let out a quiet chuckle, though there was little amusement in it. "I doubt Nene would care that much."

Otori pouted dramatically, waving a hand. "She'd never admit it, but she would care! And so would I!" She clasped her hands together, leaning closer to Kanade. "That's why I had to warn you! If something happens, you'll regret not listening to me~"

Kanade was silent for a moment. Then, finally, she muttered, "I'll be careful."

Otori beamed, clapping her hands together. "Yay~! That's all I needed to hear!"

She then twirled on her heel, as if she had already moved on from the conversation. "Well, I should be going! There's so much more to do, so many people to see~"

Kanade simply nodded, turning away. "Goodbye, Otori."

Otori waved over her shoulder. "Goodbyeeee~! See you soon, Kanade!" With that, she pranced off into the woods and the conversation seemed to end.

The three hidden figures remained still, taking in what they had heard. Practicing magic, there's no way, Ena thought. Is she— the witch? Ena grabbed Mizuki's arm even tighter than before. The knight felt her tremors.

Mafuyu quietly spoke up. "So I guess there is a witch, then."

Notes:

I talked about this on wattpad but a general warning for a little further into the fic— 25ji mostly, at least for now, isn’t entirely accurate to their game counterparts personalities. I do have a plan for it to change, but just know its purposeful.

Chapter Text

The three remained frozen behind the tree, the silence between them heavier than ever. Every bit of the conversation they had just heard was ringing in Ena's ears.

Magic... She practices magic... she really is a witch.

The Princess's grip on Mizuki's arm faltered. The knight didn't seem to notice. They, instead, had found themself staring at the supposed witch ahead of them. "We should go."

Mafuyu had also found herself staring. "No— hold on."

Mizuki broke her gaze from the witch, turning to look at their purple-haired companion instead. "Hold on? What do you mean hold on?" Their eyes narrowed, holding a sharp glare.

"Well, maybe we could use her help too." Mafuyu murmured.

"Her? Help us?" Mizuki scoffed as she whispered harshly. "Are you failing to remember anything you said about the witch not that long ago?!"

Mafuyu shrugged her shoulders. "The village girls exaggerate. Plus, wouldn't magic help us out?"

Ena moved her eyes to meet Mafuyu. "Magic is illegal."

Mizuki nodded firmly, crossing their arms. "Very illegal. Because it's dangerous, causes more harm than good."

Mafuyu raised an eyebrow. "Well, wouldn't that be the point?"

Mizuki shook her head. "No, it wouldn't. Because not only would that magic harm the people we want to harm, but it would hurt us too."

Ena hesitated. She kept to herself as they argued, but the more the thought about it... maybe a witch wouldn't be bad to have on the team.

Ena shifted on her feet. Mafuyu said the witch wouldn't look dangerous but... she looks particularly... puny, Ena pondered. There's no way someone that tiny could hurt us... and they mentioned she's only practicing, so it doesn't seem like she would know that much already.

As the Princess continued to think about it, the two knights argued quietly. She looked over at them, and back at the witch, who continued to stand by herself, looking deep in thought.

Ena spoke, shutting up both of the knights.

"Maybe we should consider it, Sir Akiyama," her voice was firm yet quiet.

Mizuki turned to her in shock. "P-Princess—" Their protest faltered as they met Ena's gaze.

The Princess continued. "Magic... might be dangerous, but maybe it could prove useful. Plus, that other girl mentioned to be careful practicing right?" Mizuki nodded to affirm Ena's assessment. "If she's only practicing then it might be hard for her to betray us, how dangerous can a beginner witch really be?"

Mafuyu placed a hand on her hip. "That's very true, Princess," she whispered smugly, before turning to Mizuki.

The pink-haired knight sighed. She glanced between the Princess, the other knight, and the witch. Their instincts screamed to shut this down entirely, but Ena's eyes were so full of hope. How could they refuse?

Ena spoke up once more, "Also, you're the one who said we needed help. Please understand, Sir Akiyama." Ena clasped her hands together in a pleading motion.

Mizuki sighed. "Fine. Only because the Princess insists."

Mafuyu smirked, clearly pleased with herself. Ena however, gave a genuine and thankful smile. Mizuki's face felt red at the sight. In the midst of all of what's happening, Ena could still smile so brightly.

As the trio continued to talk about the possible addition to their group, no one had noticed the soft footsteps approaching behind them.

"...Uh... hello?" A quiet voice cut through their hushed conversation like a blade.

Ena stiffened, she spun around quickly. Mizuki did the same, reaching for their sword's handle. Mafuyu simply turned her head, not showing much surprise.

Behind them had stood the figure they were whispering about. The witch— Kanade. She stared at them with a blank expression, her hair messily draped over her shoulders. She seemed more confused than alarmed.

"...Why are you hiding behind a tree?" She tilted her head slightly at the peculiarity of the situation.

Mafuyu crossed her arms before looking at her two companions. "Good question."

Mizuki's fingers twitched against the grip of their sword. "You—"

Kanade's eyes flickered to them. "Me?"

Ena swallowed, gripping Mizuki's sleeve instinctively. "You're the witch."

Kanade exhaled softly. "That's... not entirely accurate. Not something I’d call myself personally."

Mizuki narrowed their eyes, "Then explain."

Kanade glanced between them, then at the tree they were still hidden behind. "...Are you going to keep hiding there?"

The Princess's face flushed, realizing how ridiculous they must look. She hesitated, then slowly stepped out from behind Mizuki. The knight followed, though they didn't drop their guard.

Kanade only watched, her confusion didn't die down.

"I don't know what you've heard," her gaze flickered to Mafuyu, as if she knew what the purple-haired knight was saying, "but I just want to be left alone."

Mizuki scrunched their nose. "If you want to be left alone then why are you practicing magic? That's just begging for trouble."

The witch blinked as if the question was strange. "I have to."

"You have to?" Ena frowned.

Kanade hesitated, glancing between the three figures and sighing. "It's complicated."

Mizuki scoffed. "Complicated? That's not an answer."

Kanade's fingers curled slightly at her sides. "It's the only answer I can give."

Mafuyu spoke up, hushing Mizuki's arguments. "Whatever it is, that's not what we're worried about right now Miss Witch," she glanced towards the princess. "Our Princess here had her kingdom attacked, would you know anything about that?"

The witch's expression remained flat, her head tilted as she moved her attention towards Ena. "You're a Princess?"

Ena nodded.

Kanade watched her for a moment, seemingly assessing everything about her, before turning back to Mafuyu. "I don't know anything to any exact details."

"But you would know at least a little bit, right? I mean, you do live in the woods don't you?" Mafuyu questioned.

Kanade stared at her for a moment. It looked like the witch was racking every part of her mind to think of anything to respond with. Ena kept staring at her. Everything about the witch in front of them was frail. The Princess wondered if she even took care of herself.

The witch placed a finger on her chin. "I noticed more people traveling through since last night, thought a little further out that way, so not near where I stay... unlike you guys." She looked back at Ena. "I assumed war broke out. I didn't bother asking anything."

Ena clenched her fists. Hadn't war broken out? Was that act of violence not a call to war?

Mizuki's grip on their sword tightened. "So you just ignored it?"

Kanade met their glare without a hint of guilt. "It wasn't my problem."

Ena inhaled sharply. "People are fleeing. My people," she emphasized. "They might be looking for shelter, for safety, and you're telling me you just let them pass without a second thought?"

Kanade blinked, slow and deliberate. "Yes. I'd help if I could, but I simply have nothing to offer."

Mafuyu's voice cut through the tension. "You know, Miss Witch, you say you have nothing to offer, but that's not quite true, right?"

Kanade blinked, "What do you mean?"

Mafuyu folded her arms, tilting her head slightly. "You practice magic for a reason. Whatever that reason may be, it means you have power... which could help us."

Kanade said nothing.

"You're out here alone, too," Mafuyu continued. "If people are moving through the woods more, it's only a matter of time before someone less friendly comes looking for you." She nodded toward Ena. "Traveling with us might be safer."

Ena straightened her posture, taking her turn to convince the witch now. "That's right. We need all the help we can get, and you would know these woods better than we do."

Mizuki exhaled sharply, crossing their arms.

Mafuyu shot them a smug look.

Kanade remained silent for a long moment. Her eyes flickered between them, expression unreadable. Then, finally, she exhaled.

"Fine," she murmured. "I'll go."

Ena's face lit up. Mizuki exhaled through their nose, watching as Ena practically radiated excitement. She wasn't smiling out of politeness or duty—this was real.

It's ridiculous. Just a few minutes ago, Ena was ready to tear into Kanade for ignoring her people's suffering, and now she was smiling at her like she'd just saved the day, Mizuki thought to themself.

Mizuki wanted to be annoyed. Wanted to argue that bringing some strange witch along was a terrible idea. After all, magic is illegal. But looking at Ena now, they felt a familiar heat creeping up their neck again.

Ena turned to them, eyes shining, and Mizuki felt their resolve crumble completely.

"Thank you for comsidering, Sir Akiyama," she said, voice gentle.

The knight nodded and glanced away, letting the Princess turn her attention back to the witch in glee. Mafuyu bumped into Mizuki's shoulder to get her attention.

"The Princess sure is convincing, isn't she?" The purple-haired knight's eyes flickered between Mizuki and Ena.

"Something like that." Mizuki muttered.

Mafuyu gave a small smile before joining Ena and Kanade. Mizuki stayed back for a moment, huffing, then joining the group.

Looks like we have a full team now, huh?

Chapter Text

The group of now four had made it to the village, just on the breach of nightfall. They were met with winding cobble roads and street lamps flickering from candles which needed to be relit. There was an abundance of homes, shops, and stalls spread about the village. Everything was bustling.

Ena pouted. "Haven't we arrived too late, won't everything start closing soon?"

Mafuyu shook her head. "Not at all, Princess. This village has a very active night market all year round."

"It's a good place for supplies... and information," Kanade spoke in a soft demeanor. "People around here hear a lot."

Mizuki scanned the area around them, keeping a careful eye out. "We should watch what we say, then?"

Ena sighed, although her expression was filled with curiosity as apposed to frustration. She wasn't used to crowds like this— not without guards or the weight of her title keeping people at bay. Here, she's just like any other person.

The witch looked over at the Princess. "Are you averse to crowds?"

"Ah— no, I'm just not used to them in this manner." The Princess stuttered, surprised the tiny girl had even noticed.

"I get it. You learn to disappear into them after a while."

Before Ena could question Kanade, Mizuki stopped the group. "It's best we split up here. We need food, clothes, and weapons if possible." Mizuki glanced at the Princess before continuing, "I'll take the Princess to get some clothes good to continue walking in. Can you two get everything else?"

Mafuyu grabbed Kanade's hand, ignoring the piercing glare the witch shot her. Kanade huffed, unimpressed, but she didn't try to walk away. "I can walk on my own."

Mafuyu sighed, "Oh dear no, you're far too weak looking. Let's go, let's go." Mafuyu teased as she dragged the tiny, frail witch behind her.

Kanade shot Mizuki and Ena a look of desperation before disappearing along with Mafuyu.

Mizuki snorted. "She should be careful, Kanade is a witch after all."

Ena smiled, looking up at Mizuki. "While we're getting supplies, let's get a bag so you don't have to wear that helmet all the time."

The knight nodded, "That's a good idea, Your Highness."

The Princess's face slightly flushed. "Hey, uh... Sir Akiyama... You can just call me Ena for now, okay?"

She paused, glancing around at the people surrounding them. "At least while we're crowded like this."

"Of course, Ena," Mizuki replied in a respectful tone. "Let's go find some clothes then."

Ena nodded, smiling softly at the knight. They begun walking until they found a stall full of clothing. It was all practical clothing, mostly for travel. It was perfect. Mizuki began browsing, looking over at Ena for her input.

Ena hesitated, "Ah— I've never really had to choose these things for myself before..." She made her voice sound small.

Mizuki glanced back at Ena, she looked so timid and uncertain. They spoke softly to comfort her. "It's really not that difficult. Anything here should work so long as it's your size. Just choose what looks best to you."

Ena studied the clothes, before finding what she thought was perfect. A pair of green trousers and a white blouse. She looked at Mizuki for approval.

The knight nodded. "Looks great." They grabbed the outfit from Ena to give to the stall's owner to pay for, before spotting a large leather bag perfect for holding armor and weapons. They grabbed the bag as well. The owner quickly rung everything up and Mizuki payed with several coins hidden in a pouch under their armor. Ena stood behind the knight, fidgeting her hands.

Mizuki thanked the owner and turned to Ena. "Let's get you changed, and I should take off my armor now."

Ena frowned. "I'll pay you back for all of that once I have my kingdom back, I swear." Embarrassment overtook her voice, "Thank you, Sir Akiyama."

"It's alright, Ena, let's find somewhere to change."

The knight led her a little further, glancing around at every stall and shop on the way, looking for anywhere to change. Eventually, they found a small fabrics store with a changing booth tucked beside it. The area around them was quieter, but not silent. The crowd was a little further back— dying down as it got later though still busy.

Mizuki grabbed the fabric opening of the changing booth and held it open for Ena. "Go ahead, I'll take off my armor out here." They glanced around once more, "Then we'll see if we can find our two companions, hm?"

The Princess nodded, walking into the stall with her new clothing pressed against her chest.

While she changed, Mizuki sat down their new bag and unbuckled every piece of armor on them, gently fitting each piece into the bag. It took some effort, but they managed to get it to fit only half of the bag, leaving plenty of space and pockets for other materials to be placed inside. They picked up the bag and placed it over their shoulder.

From behind the curtain, Ena emitted her voice softly. "I really hope we can fix everything." A pause filled the air, followed by the Princess exiting the curtain, holding her old night dress and adorned in her new, walkable clothing.

Mizuki turned their head towards her. "Of course we can." Ena only looked at them with gentle eyes. She found herself staring a little bit, only at the sight of the knight without armor.

He's a lot smaller without armor, she thought to herself. It didn't make her feel any less hopeful though— she didn't believe strength was based on size.

Besides, they were taller than her— barely.

She gave Mizuki a tiny smile, she handed them her night dress to be put in the bag. "Let's go get Mafuyu and Kanade."

The knight nodded, putting the dress in the bag. "Let's go," they said, their voice was steady. They turned to walk back into the crowd.

Ena followed closely behind Mizuki, Ena followed closely behind Mizuki, still casting glances up at them now and then. She didn't say anything, but the image of them without armor lingered in her head—how the moonlight softened the angles of their face, how their figure felt oddly... graceful, even with the heavy bag on their back.

As they turned a corner and reached a quieter side street, a familiar voice called out.

"There you are!"

Mafuyu stood with her arms crossed, Kanade stood beside her. The witch was chewing on a piece of dried fruit, cheeks slightly puffed, looking displeased—but only mildly so.

"You two took forever," Mafuyu said, though, her tone wasn't angry. "We already got food and a few weapons."

Ena gave a small smile. "Sorry. We had to find a place to change."

Kanade's gaze flicked from Ena to Mizuki, lingering longer on the knight. Her head tilted.

"You're a girl?"

Mizuki blinked, caught off guard. They opened their mouth, then closed it again. For a moment, silence hung between the group like a thread waiting to snap. Mizuki thought of how to respond.

Ena stepped forward slightly, as if to intercep, "Kanade—"

But Mizuki raised a hand gently. "It's alright." They didn't look upset. Just thoughtful.

"...Yeah," Mizuki said quietly, almost like they were trying the word out loud for the first time in a long time. "I am."

Mafuyu gave Kanade a look. "You can't just ask people that."

"I can if it's obvious and no one says anything... the armor hid it well, I thought she was a man," Kanade muttered. She glanced back at Mizuki. "What's your name, then? Your given one."

Mizuki hesitated, eyes flickering toward Ena for the briefest moment. Then, she answered.

"It's Mizuki."

The witch nodded.

Ena stayed quiet, but something softened in her expression as she repeated the name silently to herself. Mizuki.

Mafuyu, meanwhile, broke the quiet by tossing a cloth-wrapped bundle toward the knight. "We got rations. Figured you two would be hungry."

Mizuki caught it easily. "Thanks."

"You're welcome, Mizuki," Mafuyu said with a playful grin, exaggerating the name just enough to make the knight blush.

Kanade, somehow already halfway through another piece of dried fruit, just muttered, "You're so annoying," under her breath.

"Love you too~," Mafuyu chimed back.

Ena smiled faintly at the exchange before stepping a little closer to Mizuki. "I should stop calling you Sir Akiyama then, huh?"

Mizuki smiled at the smaller Princess. "I guess so."

Chapter Text

The sun had barely risen, casting a soft golden glow over the quiet cobble streets as the group gathered their things. The market had wound down, the last of the vendors packing up their stalls, and the soft murmur of voices slowly faded into the morning air. Mizuki adjusted her bag, glancing at the others to make sure everything was in order. Mafuyu was leaning against a nearby post, trying to look casual, though it was clear she was more excited about leaving than she let on. Kanade was inspecting a small bundle of herbs she'd picked up earlier, chewing on one absentmindedly.

"Does it taste good?" Mafuyu joked.

The tiny witch stared at her, taking a moment to respond. "No," she took the herb out of her mouth. "I'm checking if it's poison." She continued to look the purple-haired knight directly in her eyes, almost as if she was playing into Mafuyu's games.

The knight rasied an eyebrow, looking over at Ena and Mizuki worriedly. "Guys... I think Kanade is going to kill me," she pouted.

Kanade's expression remained deadpan. "If I wanted you dead you'd be dead already."

Ena giggled at the two. Mizuki only watched, entertained. A small smile tugged at her lips hearing the Princess laugh.

Mafuyu gave a dramatic swoon. "Oh, Kanade! You're just too sweet to be a witch~!" Kanade didn't respond, or acknowledge her at all.

Mafuyu pouted, enjoying herself even without a reaction. "One day," she said, "you'll laugh at my jokes and I'll die of shock. That'll be the end of me."

Kanade finally blinked and tilted her head. "That would save me the trouble."

Ena laughed again, a hand covering her mouth. "You two are ridiculous."

Mizuki chuckled softly, swinging her bag over her shoulder. "Alright, enough of this. Let's get going."

They began down the stone path leading toward the edge of the village, for a moment, the road ahead felt peaceful—almost hopeful.

As they got closer to the edge of the village, they passed a cafe, where they heard a group of girls talking rather loudly.

A girl with long black hair spoke especially loud, "...That's what I heard!"

A girl with short grey hair responded, sipping whatever was in her cup. "I don't know if I believe that, Ichika. The castle was in shambles..."

Ena stopped walking. She heard what they were saying and it sounded... familiar. The rest of the group came to a halt noticing the Princess had stopped.

A girl with a short brown ponytail rested her chin on her hand. "No, I heard so too. Some people said they say him running off with that blue-haired knight... Isn't that knight the reason he stepped away from the throne?"

The other girls shrugged before a girl with two long blonde pigtails spoke up, a girl Ena recognized. "Well, whatever the case, I hope it's true Sir Akito made it out! It only gives me hope my parents might've made it too..." The girl pouted.

Ena listened in shock. Akito... Could be alive? He might've made it out...?

Mizuki stepped closer to the Princess, placing a hand on her shoulder. Kanade and Mafuyu also made their way back to be near the two, but mostly to listen in for context.

"It sounds like he was with Sir Toya. He's a really great knight, I wouldn't doubt if they did make it out," the knight said hopefully.

Ena looked up at Mizuki, her eyes shimmering with a bright hope and utter desperation. "He could be alive..."

Kanade's face was blank, but her eyes held curiosity. "And Akito is..?"

Mafuyu was quick to respond, almost sushing the witch. "The Princess's brother." Kanade only nodded.

Kanade looked over to Ena. "So, your brother is alive, then?"

Ena thought deeply before she responded. "If Lady Saki has hope, I will too."

"If there's rumors spreading this quickly though..." Mizuki huffed, "it's probably best we get going. There might be people looking to attack you and your brother since you survived."

Ena nodded, her gaze still lingering on the group of girls at the cafe, the weight of their conversation settling heavily on her. "You're right," she said. "Let's go."
