Summary
“I have something new for you,” Kwon Hyeok says, setting down a stack of flashcards.
I love flashcards, a fifteen-year-old Juwon doesn’t say. He only reaches out to square them with the corner of the table. Hyeok sighs.
“Listen to me,” he orders. Juwon stares at his nose instead of his eyes. He picks up the top flashcard and flips it up in front of his face so Juwon will stare at that instead.

“Happy,” Juwon says, repeating the bolded word at the bottom of the flashcard. It’s the first time he’s spoken since waking, and his voice feels hoarse. He rubs at his throat. Sometimes, on Hyeok’s days off, he spends the whole day silent.
Hyeok lowers the card and studies him. “You’re smart. I don’t feel like this will be a hard thing to learn, but you’ll have to actually look at people’s faces instead of staring at their shoes.”
