Chapter Text
Shadows eyes drifted closed as he leaned his head against the wall behind him, his black and red striped hair covering his face. The tempting smell of the coffee beans he adored so much filled the air as shadow groaned and stood back up, instead moving to lean against the counter.
You’d think there would be more people in a college campus coffee shop the first semester, but it was suprisingly empty after the classic morning rush of freshman who stupidly scheduled their classes at 9am, and were living to regret it.
The Mean Bean currently had two people in it; Shadow, and his coworker, roommate, and close friend rouge.
“Get up dear, can’t have anyone see you falling asleep on the job.” Rouge said teasingly, hitting shadow on the shoulder.
“Why, there’s no one here.” Shadow pointed out, turning around to face her. “You’ve got to be tired, rouge.” Shadow muttered, grabbing a small cup and half filling it with coffee beans. Slipping the correct amount of cash from his pocket into the register, he took a handful of beans and threw them into his mouth. “You didn’t get back to the dorm until like three.”
“Amy throws fun parties, what can I say?”Rouge giggled.
the bell on the door dinged, announcing new customers arrival. Shadow sighed and turned away to find two other sophomores walk in- one he was familiar with; everyone called him knuckles. Sports champion, and honestly, he was the opposite of what you’d assume; he was kind and considerate, if a little unaware. Shadow saw him a lot, as rouge was constantly fawning over him. The sophomore next to him made shadows breath catch in his throat.
He had bright blue hair and a mischievous smile as he joked to the athlete next to him. He was honestly kind of cute. He confidently stepped up to order, and his voice was music. Shadow forced his mind to focus on the coffee order and NOT the attractiveness of the other party as he took notes of their order.
“I’ll get a medium strawberry smoothie and knukie over here will get a medium black coffee.” The blue one said, his emerald green eyes scanning the coffee shop, scanning shadow.
“Is that all?” Shadow asked, willing everything about his being to stay normal.
“Ooh, and a chocolate croissant. Thanks!”
Shadow marked it all down, and, following procedure, asked “name?”
“Sonic. S-o-n-I-c.”
“Cash or card?”
“Cash.” Sonic handed over the amount displayed on the screen.
Shadow counted change, dropping the change into Sonic’s hand and trying to not think about how close their hands were.
“I’ll get started right away.”
Shadow stepped off to go work on the order, going through the simple process and trying to keep his mind focused as to not fuck up the order.
Placing both drinks into a drink holder, and grabbing the pastry from its spot on the counter, he put it into one of the two spare cupholders and walked over to the pickup area, where rouge was idly chatting to the two boys.
“Here you go.” Shadow nodded at the duo and handed the drink holder over.
“Thank you so much!” Sonic said, nodding back as he and knuckles left.
It took five seconds after Sonic and knuckles were out of sight for rouge to start cackling.
“So, sonic, huh?”
Shadows face flushed, but he played dumb.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Shadow, you’re redder than your highlights, don’t try that on me.”
Shadow grumbled something sounding suspiciously like “fuck you” and grabbed his abandoned cup of coffee beans. Popping one in his mouth, he leaned back against the counter as rouge continued talking.
“Don’t worry, I asked for his number.”
Shadow choked, whipping around and screaming “YOU WHAT?!”
Rouge suppressed her laugh, unable to suppress the shit eating grin on her face. Shadow stared dagger at her, five seconds away from slapping rouge into next semester.
“Chillax, hot topic, you’ll be fine.” Rouge giggled, slipping the small sheet of paper into shadows pocket.
