Vlad nears the slope where just beyond their home is waiting.
Panic seizes him, settling like an uncomfortable pit in his stomach, the same as it does every time he crests this slope. His claws dig into the flesh above his undead heart, where it squeezes painfully inside his chest, and threatens to tear his skin and turn it bloody. Tension makes his spine rigid and Vlad sucks in a breath and doesn’t breathe until he makes it over the edge. One step. Two steps. Three. He stops. He stares.
