Hamlet was not too smart a person.
He knew this pretty well. What with Muffy always calling him dumb.
But he wasn’t stupid.
Looking across the way beside the tree he was sitting aside, the hamster watched in slight concern as Moony stood in place, blankly staring out into the ocean with a flimsy axe barely staying in her grip.
It was late, so Muffy was in her tent, likely getting ready for bed. Hamlet was busy looking at their neighbor, however. She looked like she was going to keel over any minute, and as he squinted, he noticed the slight tremor of the human’s shoulders. That’s… not normal, he doesn’t think at least.
Heaving himself upwards, he quietly walks his way over to her and speaks. “Moony?”
Startling heavily, Moony almost dropped the axe onto her own feet before catching it, turning to look at Hamlet with wide, red rimmed eyes. “Uh… Hi… uh. … hamlet… do you need anything…?”
“No, just wondering if you’re okay, hammie? You’ve been staring there for a while… You uh, don’t look so hot either.” She looked like complete shit, if he’s completely honest.
Moony blinked, clearly surprised, before breathing shakily and looking at him with watery eyes. “I’m… not okay… I’m sorry i shouldn’t .. be crying…”
“Hey, hey hammie it’s ok… everyone’s allowed to cry! Wanna chill on the sand for a bit..? It feels nice, don’t it?”
Carefully taking her free hand and leading her to the sand, Hamlet sat down with Moony and patted her shoulder with his paw, rubbing small circles like he remembered his mama used to do. Her sniffles turned into small sobs, and the hamster froze a bit when she leaned into his chest, before wrapping his arms around her in a hug.
“Do.. you wanna talk about it?”
“Everythin’s so over..whelming and I… I dunno… I feel like… like I have to do things… to make everyone happy and—....” The human hiccuped, holding him tighter as he rubbed her back. Hamlet swallowed thickly, letting her nestle into his fur.
“Why don’t me and Muffy help ya with it? We’re here together, after all. We need to stick up and help each other. ‘Sides though, it’s getting late, hammie. You should rest on it and we’ll get back to it in the morning… maybe after a morning jog?”
Moony shuddered before nodding quietly. “...that sounds nice… are you sure…? I don’t… I don't want to bother anyone…”
“It’s not a bother! I’m sure Muffy will be happy to help too, when the sun’s up.”
“...okay… sorry for.. Crying on you…”
“Don’t worry about it, you matter more than some stains.”
“... yea… I guess so…”
