Be x My x Valentine?
Gon x Killua
…
A soft groan came from the large lump of sheets, strands of white hair peeking from underneath. Killua stretched, his arms and legs slipping from under the comforter, as he starfished on the bed, rubbing his sleepy eyes.
By instinct, he rolled his head to gaze at the bed next to his own, expecting to see his bright eyed friend, who would greet him every morning. But instead, he saw nothing but a neatly made bed, causing his eyebrows to furrow. It was unlike Gon to leave without waking Killua, largely because it would prove to be extremely difficult.
Due to his upbringing, Killua was an extremely light sleeper, easily forced awake by the slightest sounds. It was because of this that, even though Gon was always the first to wake up in the morning, he insisted on staying in bed until Killua woke up as well; he didn’t want to disturb his friend.
“Gon?” He called in a raspy voice, standing to his feet.
He heard no response, nor did he see his friend, as he looked around the shared hotel room. A small part of him was startled, due to the unusual behavior, but he opted to push it down, at least momentarily, while he went to freshen up in the bathroom and change his clothes.
Sticking his head through his white v neck t-shirt, he heard his phone buzzing, quickly running to answer it. “Gon, you dummy! Why didn’t you wake me before you left!”
On the other end of the line, he heard Gon’s lighthearted laughter, making his heart involuntarily flutter. “Sorry, Killua, I had to! Are you dressed yet? Come down to the fountain in front of the hotel!”
Gon sounded more chipper than usual, which was saying a lot; the bright ray of sunshine seemed to become the sun itself, this morning.
The fluttering in Killua’s chest was becoming more intense, causing him to inwardly groan; he hated the way Gon could make him feel flustered. “Fine..fine I’ll be there in a second. But you better have a good reason for this.”
Hanging up the phone, Killua shoved it in his pocket and quickly made his way down to the first floor. The hotel hallways were quiet, as most likely, the inhabitants were either gone or still asleep. Because of this, the soft patter of his feet could be heard, as he entered the elevator and rode it down to the first floor.
Reaching the outside, Killua felt the bright rays of the morning sun across his face, blinding him momentarily. It was around ten o’clock and the air was warming up, morning dew still on the grass and flowers outside. Walking toward the fountain, Killua saw Gon, through the sun-rays, sitting with his back to him. He sat with a bright smile on his face, kicking his feet and humming, his eyes brightening when Killua approached.
“Killua! Happy Valentine’s Day!” He wrapped his arms around his friend, hugging him tightly and nuzzling his face in his neck. “Will you be my Valentine, Killua?”
Killua braced himself as he was grabbed, his body stiffening as Gon squeezed him. “Y-Your what!? Valentine!?
“Yeah.” Gon looked up at him, with a smile that could melt butter. “It’s Valentine’s day, so we can be each other’s Valentine!”
“No we can’t! Isn’t Valentine’s Day for, you know…couples?” He bashfully turned his face to the side, trying to hide his growing blush.
“We are a couple!”
“But like, for couples who love each other, dummy!”
Moving his hands down to grab Killua’s wrists, he pouted with a confused face. “Do we not love each other? I thought we did.”
“I- of course we do, but…but that’s not the type of love that I meant!”
Gon’s eyebrows furrowed even more, his head tilting to the side to show his clear obliviousness to the subject. “How is our love different from the couples you’re talking about, then?”
A gust of wind blew through their hair, ringing in their ears and making the silence between them even more apparent. There was a moment of realization, the chatter of passersby and the sounds of chirping birds bringing Killua out of his own head. What did he mean by love…did he even know?
“...Isn’t love just love?”
Killua’s brain was a jumble of confusion and embarrassment, his skin feeling hot to the touch. “...Well, there’s different kinds of love…and the love for Valentine’s day is where the couples want to kiss each other and be together all the time…I think.” His voice sounded strained, his eyes desperately fighting to not lock with Gon’s innocent and wide ones.
“They kiss?” His hands still had a grip on Killua’s wrists, one that refused to loosen.
Bringing his eyes up slowly, his face flushed and his hands now sweaty, Killua’s eyes came to meet Gon’s, the blood draining from his face, as he saw his friend with a sheepish expression.
“Well, we’re with each other all the time…and actually, I want to kiss you all the time, too, but I know you won’t let me.” Gon moved his hands to embrace Killua in a hug again. “So that means we can still celebrate together!”
…Clearly he didn’t know the implications of his words.
“N-no, Gon!” Killua squeaked, feeling the wind almost knocked out of him. “Couples share beds and hold hands and stuff!” He mumbled, trying to free himself from the iron grip.
He heard a soft giggle, Gon’s hands sliding down to grasp Killua’s, their fingers interlocked together. “Really!? We sleep in the same bed a lot these days, too!” He took a moment to look down at their hands, bringing them up to eye level. “And we hold hands, like this!”
Killua groaned, nearly falling to his knees in fatigue at Gon’s ignorance. He had to be toying with him, at this point…
“Gee Killua, it looks like we were meant to be together, like those couples you’re talking about!”
“...Idiot…”
He laughed, pulling his friend by the hands to sit on the edge of the fountain, still with an excited look in his eyes. “So…will you be my Valentine?”
The simple question was enough to take the fight out of Killua completely, his shoulders slouching at the mere exhaustion taking over his body. “...Fine.”
Gon smiled brightly, his excitement spilling out, as he did the one gesture that came to his mind first. Softly leaning forward, he rubbed his nose against Killua’s, the gentle kunik making him short circuit. It was so tender that all Killua could do was sit in shock, unable to move his body, as he tried to comprehend what was happening. Thankfully…or unfortunately…it had only lasted for a moment.
“Oh yeah! I got you a present, too!” The boy realized, quickly pulling away from Killua, who let out a deep sigh of relief, before handing him a small gift bag.
“A gift?” He replied, trying to steady his voice.
Killua softly took the bag in his hand and pushed the wrapping to the side. Inside were robo chocolate balls, chocolate covered strawberries, and an assortment of flowers that looked like they were freshly picked.
Gon softly bounced as he watched Killua’s eyes widen. “I went out this morning to pick the flowers!”
It wasn’t the fact that Gon had bought him anything that had secretly moved Killua, but rather the thought behind the gift. He couldn’t deny that it made something within him stir, something he didn’t have the vocabulary to yet explain…but he felt warm. Gon had really put effort into this Valentine thing.
“Killua, are you okay? Your face has been red for a long time…” Gon’s hand pressed against Killua’s cheek. “It’s so warm! You’re not sick are you?”
Killua’s hand brushed Gon’s away, as he grumbled, mumbling the second part softly. “No…thanks for the gift…”
“Anything for you…Valentine…”
Before Killua could let out a snarky reply, Gon had placed a soft kiss on his cheek. Quickly pulling him up by the hand, he began to drag the now dazed Killua down the sidewalk. “Let’s go spend the day together! I have so much planned!”
