Chapter Text
"Taehyun-ah! Come down, sweetheart! We're about to open!"
A sharp gasp escaped from the male, his eyes instantly shot open when his mother's sweet voice broke through his dream world, causing his heart to race as he pushed himself up from his bed — the sweet scents of cinnamon, honey, and sugar filled the air, wrapping around him like a comforting greeting that he was all too familiar with.
But before he could allow himself to relax and bask in the warmth of the gentle morning that greeted him, he whipped his head towards the window — eyes widening in pure horror, feeling his senses freeze.
The sun was already up. High up.
"Oh no..." He whispered, flushing in terror at the sight of the suns position in the sky, rising with every passing second which meant that the town would be waking up at any minute now, to start a new day, which meant— "SHOOT!"
Quickly tossing the blanket off of his body in a hurried manner, Taehyun scrambled up onto his feet and rushed towards his closet, nearly slipping on some papers that were scattered over the floor as he threw off whatever comfortable pajama shirt he had on, grabbing his white button up top — nearly yanking it out of the poor closet and ripping it.
I just wanted five more minutes of sleep! How did five minutes turn into two hours?! Fuckfuckfuckfuck!
Taehyun could feel his heart pounding heavily against his chest, ready to pop out at any given moment as his brain was just cursing at himself over and over again, angry that he had woken up so late! Pure adrenaline began to build, swirling through his veins like a storm as he rushed around his room past all the fallen pens and papers.
It was like there was some sort of invisible clock hanging over his head while he buttoned up his white shirt with shaky hands, ticking down the seconds until the shop would open like some sort of nightmarish taunt! He was not going to be late today, not at all! That's humiliating!
Once he had finally managed to pop the last button into the hole, he grabbed onto his black pants and bolted out of his room like a mad man, like some sort of criminal escaping a wild man hunt!
This is what I get for not getting up at six when i had the chance! Taehyun bit down on the bottom of his lip to hold back his tears, nearly tripping over his own feet when he tried pulling his pants up while running. I'm never listening to Hyuka again! Stay up late he said... it'll be okay he said... you'll wake up early he said... agh! absolute dumbass!
The moment he finally managed to put his pants on and not fall face first onto the ground, he soon stumbled into the bathroom (he probably looks like a humanoid walking tornado at this point, haha!) and nearly groaned in disgust at the sight of himself in the mirror — his pretty black hair had strands sticking up all sorts of directions and there were even crust markings near the corner of his lips and eyes! This was so embarrassing for him.
"Taehyun!" He heard his mother call for him once more, her voice dripping with a sweet yet impatient tone. "We're about to open up in ten minutes! Come down!"
"I'm coming, mom!" He shouted back, loud enough for her to hear him as he began to frantically brush his teeth, washing his face to rid of any impurities or crust so he could actually look decent and well put for the day!
After taking a few more seconds to wash his face correctly, he soon lifted his head up and stared at his reflection in the mirror for a mere second — smiling widely to make sure he looked okay before continuing to fix his hair, just so it didn't look like someone plopped some sort of weird haystack on his head.
The pressure started to weigh down heavier on his shoulders, the urge to make sure he was set and ready for the day was growing strong. It was practically eating him up alive at this point, and maybe if he smashed his face into the mirror, he wouldn't have to worry about all of this!
But of course, he unfortunately didn't do that. No matter how strong the urge was, he had to make sure he looked pretty just incase he saw... him... today.
I don't know if I'll be able to face him, not after what the hell I just did last night.
After double... triple... quadruple!! checking that he looked pretty enough for the day, Taehyun quickly bolted out of the bathroom and past all of the other rooms, the invisible clock that hung above his head started to tick down faster, making him feel even more anxious than before!
As he rushed down the stairs in a hurried yet clumsy manner, by the time he reached the last step, his footing had faltered and sent him flying forward — causing him to squeak loudly as he nearly wiped out then and there!
"Woah!!" Taehyun yelped when he flung forward, his arms flailing around like some messed up bird that didn't know how to fly, but somehow... with some miracle... he managed to regain his balance, saving himself from a nasty fall and bruise. Okay. Note to self: don't die before the bakery even opens!
He paused for a brief moment to catch his breath, placing a hand over his chest where he could feel his heart pounding heavily to the point he was certain it was going to pop out of his chest at any minute! But after a bit, once he finally collected himself, he walked down the hallway and through the kitchen — passing by all of the desserts that were baking in the ovens as he headed towards his mother who was near the front display shelves, balancing a large tray of warm, freshly, baked goods.
"Here! Let me take that!" Taehyun said, rushing over to his mother's side as he gently grabbed the tray from her arms. "You shouldn't be carrying this, you should've let me handled it."
His mother blinked in surprise, a bit taken aback before a warm smile spread across her face, taking a step back to cross her arms. "I was going to let you handle it," She said with a playful brow raise and knowing tone. "But someone decided to sleep in. You never oversleep, Hyun. What happened?"
A faint hue of pink flushed across Taehyun's face, instantly trying to distract himself from the burning embarrassment by placing the fresh bread loafs onto the display shelf. "I... uh..." Shoot, if I tell her the truth, she'll never let me live it down! "I guess... my body was just really tired. It won't happen again, though! I promise."
"You know I'm not upset at you, right?" His mother smiled wider, as if she sensed his panic. Usually, she would ruffle his hair to reassure him better, but since he's carrying the tray, she doesn't want to contaminate any of the delicacies with fallen stray hairs. "It's okay to sleep in, but not on a day where the shop is open. Now, is it alright if you can manage the front for a bit? I have to check on the honey cinnamon loafs!"
Taehyun inhaled softly through his nose, calming his nerves as he nodded his head. "Of course," He replied lightheartedly. "I have it all covered, no worries."
"That's my hard working boy!"
With a content hum, his mother gently patted his shoulder — a silent reassurance before walking past him to head to the kitchen, finally leaving Taehyun alone at the front with all of his thoughts.
In that moment, he had suddenly let out a heavy breath of relief that he hadn't realized he'd been holding in, shaking his head to clear out the heavy thoughts that began to conjure up in his mind as he placed the last few pretty baked goods onto the display case, stepping back to make sure everything looked good before placing the tray down, making his way to do his daily walk around the bakery to check on everything.
It was a simple walk, just to clear out his head and to check on everything, to make sure that the lovely desserts that were on the shelves or tables were nice and warm, and thank god his mother woke up early enough to set up everything — saving him from wasting his time checking on each and every loaf.
And though this was supposed to clear his head, that checking on all of the pretty baked delicacies were supposed to make him feel clear headed...
...he barely felt clear headed at all.
"I guess... my body was just really tired."
Pfft. Yeah right.
Though he had told his mother the truth, that his body was indeed exhausted, he knew it in his soul that it wasn't the full truth at all — and that the true reason as to why he was so exhausted and up late at night was... was absolutely humiliating!
He'd never admit it to his mother, or anyone else! Besides the two people who know about his current situation, the two people who encouraged him to stay up late... the sole reason behind all of his suffering.
Even looking back on it now, remembering the whole scene that played out the night before, he never felt so embarrassed that he had attempted to do something so... so foolish!
Like seriously! Who stays up past midnight trying to write love letters for the entire night?!
Oh my god! Taehyun held back a frustrated groan, and despite it only being himself in the bakery so far, he did not want to humiliate himself! Even if he wanted to just smash his head through the window... I should've never listened to Kai's damn wack ass advice! Who the hell spends their entire night writing love letters like some dumb cliche romance novel?! I'm seriously losing it! I lost sleep over that!
Okay yeah, maybe it was technically his own fault for listening to his best friend instead of ignoring his words... but he wasn't going to go down in shame alone!
Quickly glancing out towards the window, his nerves beginning to spiral when he realized that the bakery would be opening soon (maybe two minutes max?) and there was a high chance that he would see... him... and after what had happened last night, he's not so sure he's ready to face him after practically fantasizing about him the entire night! Agh! Creepy headass!
Taehyun bit down on the bottom of his lip, trying to ground and distract himself from the... the utter delusions his mind began to conjure up, forcing himself away from the window before any passerby's in the town witnesses his stupid chaotic like behavior.
Okay, just breathe. You can breathe! He inhaled a deep...calming... breath as he took his spot behind the counter, glancing out towards the window one more time. There was just a minute until the bakery opens, until the town comes alive. You're fine! He's... he's out of town, isn't he? Yeah...! Bin said he was, so... so you won't see him today... it's all okay.
Despite trying to reassure himself, he couldn't help but feel disappointed.
But for now, all he has to do now is stay calm and collected! Be the confident and patient bakers boy he had always been, to serve customers his hard worked delicacies with joy!
However... if those two damn idiots... the bane of his existence and the cause of all of his migraine appears... he's certain he'll lose his mind right then and there — and he'll really smash his head against a window.
Just stay calm, composed, and at ease! That's what you're known for in the village, being calm and at ease!
He was far from that.
Taehyun began to count down the seconds until the bakery officially opens, counting down the seconds until he sees all of the familiar faces he faces daily appear before him again. His hands began to twitch, trembling with anticipation, and... deep down, there was a part of his heart that was excited and blooming with energy, in hopes he would see that familiar blonde boy who had stolen his heart ever so hopelessly—
ding!
The sound of the small bell jingled loudly as the door swung wide open, forcing him out of his daydream as he whipped his head over towards the door way where he was expecting to see... him. But instead, he was greeted by a familiar face that had always managed to come by the bakery the minute it opens.
"Mr. Jung!" Taehyun exclaimed with semi-fakeish excitement, smiling brightly as he forced the disappointment that bloomed in his heart down the farthest drain. "Morning! What would you like today, your usual?"
"Good morning, Taehyun!" Mr. Jung greeted him, smiling widely with that comforting heart shape smile. "You know me well! But add in a loaf of that honey cinnamon bread, will you? Your bakery all makes the best ones, best in all of cerys village!"
Taehyun let a light laugh escape from him, nodding his head as he moved diligently, grabbing a paper bag as he started to fill it with the regular delicacies that Mr. Jung wiould usually order, along with the cinnamon honey bread that was their most popular item.
Before he knew it, the bakery began to buzz with life and energy as familiar faces and locals filled the cozy space — chatting and laughing as they walked around the area, scouting out every basket filled with delights they could get their hands on before all the good ones sold out.
With all of the customers coming in and out, Taehyun moved around like a clockwork, attending to everyone's needs while his mother dealt with baking in the kitchen. Smiling, greeting, remembering everyone's favorite orders, diligently conversed with those who he was familiar with, he was definitely making sure that he was on top of his game today!
Though, it was a bit overwhelming, being the only one at the front during the rush hours, the livelihood of the bakery and seeing all those familiar faces come in and out with bright smiles on their faces was enough to make his heart beam with happiness. He took pride in his mother's success, that their bakery was a booming success in cerys village.
It also helped that their shophouse sat in the heart of the town, everyone knew each other, familiar with who worked where and what places, and also word of recommendations of where to get the best materials soared through the air like wind.
And he adored it so much, living in cerys village, the one that was closest to the kingdoms capital (it was only a thirty minute horse ride away!) and one that was favored in all of the lands, always booming with energy and excitement — and though some people planned to move straight into the capital when they're old or wealthy enough, Taehyun was certain he would always remain in cerys, it was where his home was after all.
He was comfortable with the familiar faces he would see every day, growing older with his friends whom he shared a childhood with, and... staying close to... him, especially him, while his family ruled over the town diligently.
However... despite all of the perfections and love he held for the village, there was just one certain thing that irritated him the most in this town.
...It's how fast gossip would spread throughout the area, like absolute wildfire.
"Hey! Did you hear? The mayor and his son are supposed to return soon!"
"Really? It's been so long since we saw their faces, especially his precious son!"
"I have a friend from the village they stayed at, apparently the mayor's son is looking for a partner! It's about time!"
Taehyun's breath hitched when he heard that last sentence, his eyes widening in shock as he nearly dropped the gold coins he was counting in his head — his head snapping up towards the direction where he heard the two women converse, but he couldn't exactly pinpoint them since the bakery was so busy.
He didn't mean to be nosy, he didn't mean to eavesdrop, but after what he heard... his heart sank down to his chest like a sickening storm.
The mayor's son... is looking for a partner...?
Before he could falter more, he quickly swallowed the heavy lump in his throat as he immediately counted the gold coins properly before handing the next packaged baked goods to the person in front of him — yet he couldn't ignore the way his eyes began to sting and his head became fuzzy, throwing him off guard as heavy thoughts formed in his head.
A partner? Why would he... I know he's at that age but...
No... no! He wouldn't go out of town just to find a partner, he's a flirt with everyone, just stay calm!
It's just... it's just talk.
But what if... I... lose my chance...?
"Tyun-ah."
The sound of his mother's sweet voice threw him off guard, bringing him back to reality as he quickly turned to face her — his breath trembling as his mother stared at him while helping a customer bag their baked goods, a worried expression was washed over her face which made his heart drop, oh gosh... was he in trouble?
"Why don't you go to the back and kneed on some of the dough, sweetheart," His mother said, shocking him completely. "You look like you need a break, and we might need to bake more bread soon."
A frown began to curl on his lips at his mother's request, glancing over towards the busy area as customers continued to file in like some sort of flood. He was never one to walk away from the job, especially to leave his mother alone dealing with this whole mess.
"...Are you sure?" He asked, helping an old man package some of his things. The offer was tempting... a space that was nice and quiet — separated from the chaos the main area had, but the idea of leaving behind his mother made him feel guilty. "I can handle things here, you can go to the back if you—"
"Take a break, Taehyun." His mother spoke up, cutting him off with a knowing expression. "Your hands are trembling, go on. I'll call you right back out when I need you again... and don't argue with me."
Taehyun quickly glanced down at his hands when she mentioned it, his eyes widening slightly when he saw that his hands were indeed trembling, a faint sign that he was growing overwhelmed. But he didn't want to leave, and right as he opened his mouth to argue against what his mother had said, she suddenly shot him a threatening glare which sent chills down his spine.
Alright, she wasn't joking around! With how stubborn his mother was when she was serious about something, there was no way he could win against her.
So with a defeated sigh, he nodded his head and handed his last packaged bag over to the next customer before he walked away from the front, rushing over towards the kitchen as the loud chatter behind him soon became a muffled blur, making his racing heart ease down ever so slightly.
As much as he loved handling customers and talking to others, this was one of those moments where he needed time to himself to just... breathe.
Especially after what he heard.
It's just plain gossip. He clenched his jaw tightly, heading over towards the countertops as he grabbed his apron and easily tied it around his waist — rolling up his sleeves as he prepared to handle the large bowl of dough waiting for him. I shouldn't believe everything that people say, it's all... pathetic talk.
But... there is a chance he could be looking for a partner, he's at the age of marriage.
Fuck.
The thought of... him... finding another partner, someone else to spend his future with, sent nothing but a pathetic wave of envy and jealousy through his veins — he needed to distract himself fast before he loses it.
So with a low groan, he dragged over the small bowl of flour and began dusting the surface, plopping the semi-sticky dough onto the countertop as his hands began moving automatically. Kneading, pressing, folding, turning the dough in all sorts of direction to get the flour all up in it.
I shouldn't get worked up over this, I haven't heard news of him finding a partner yet.
But fuck... what if I do lose my chance?! Maybe I should've stayed up longer writing that dumb love letter, but if I were to get rejected...
Taehyun's hands began to slow while kneading the dough, those heavy thoughts of him not being chosen to spend the future with the mayor's beloved son drove him insane — and he knew he shouldn't dream big, he was way out of his league, but...
Ah... He squeezed his eyes shut, heart fluttering against his own will. Choi Yeonjun, you drive me insane.
Just the thought of Yeonjun made Taehyun's heart flutter and dtomach twist all at once, his face heating up with desire the longer he thought about the elder, the mayor's beloved son and the towns absolute jewel.
He would never admit it, but Yeonjun was like a prince in a storybook — maybe he could be royalty himself if he wasn't born into a shabby small town. He was absolutely everything to Taehyun: handsome, smart, kindhearted, and absolutely charming.
And it drove Taehyun insane every time he saw him, or even interacted with him.
He remembers it all too well, the night he fell for Yeonjun. At first, he had no interest in the elder, he was just a familiar face in the village after all, but... two years ago, when he had chosen Taehyun to dance with at the lantern festival the town had hosted in honor of the kingdom's founding birthday — he felt himself fall hard being in the elders arm, being his center of attention for the entire night.
And now... all he ever wanted was to be Yeonjun's, to let his heart be his.
But... he knew that he wasn't the kind of person Yeonjun would choose for a partner. He was just the bakers boy behind the counter, the helper, the safe one — and he hated how the thought made him feel anxious, invisible, and envious.
Yeonjun would choose someone of his own status, someone who was more wealthy and made prettier things, like jewelry (though that was Hyuka's profession) not someone who surrounded themselves around like... bread and muffins all day, every day!
And though he was confident in himself, he always knew what words to say or how to counter an irritating argument, to prove that his way was much better than any others — he was absolutely horrible at expressing his... love for others, especially romantic love.
It's been two years now, and he should confess, time was ticking and he didn't want to loose his chance... but he just doesn't know what to say! He becomes an absolute mess around Yeonjun, barely able to contain himself when he was around. It didn't help that Soobin and Huening Kai would always taunt him when the elder was around!
If only... there was a certain way that could bring him more confidence to confess to Yeonjun, or even have the elder show that he loves him back.
Without even realizing it, he stared out the window absentmindedly, barely noticing how his hands had stopped moving and his fingers began to slowly sink into the dough as his thoughts swirled like a storm.
I know Hyuka said confessing is easy but... it's not for me. I can barely muster up the right set of words.
It's not like Yeonjun reciprocates my feelings anyway, I'm just the boy he gets bread from everyday...
...but I miss him so much, I just hope it's not true, that he really isn't looking for a partner— well, who isn't me, of course.
Ugh, so much for being confident, calm, and collected... he's none of those things when it came down to his feelings.
"Taehyun!" His mother's voice suddenly snapped from the front, it was loud and urgent yet filled with joy. "Come here sweetheart! You have people waiting for you!"
Suddenly jolting in his spot, Taehyun nearly felt his soul leave his body as he glanced down at the dough underneath him, an embarrassed gasp escaping from him as he scrambled to place it back in its bowl, covering it with a cloth and pushing it to the side to rest before wiping his hands on his apron to rid of any flour.
Crap, he had daydreamed about Yeonjun... again.
Quickly untying his apron, he threw it onto the open counter before rushing back out to the front where he saw that there were less customers than before, his eyes widening when he saw two familiar faces waiting for him patiently — leaning against the counter with matching grins.
Well... it seems like he's about to lose his mind.
"There you are, why do you look so out of breath?" Soobin was the first to speak up, the smile on his face curled into a teasing one.
"We came to steal you!" Huening Kai was the next to speak up, munching on a small slice of bread that Taehyun's mother probably gave to him. "That's fine right? We just missed you soooo much!!"
That doesn't sound convincing at all.
They're definitely here to tease him.
"Uh..." Taehyun hesitated, though it did seem nice to go with his best friends, he glanced over towards his mother. He doesn't want to leave her behind to do all the work. "I don't..."
"It's fine!" His mother said gently, waving him off with a kind smile. "Go on, the dough's resting now anyway, and I can handle it all. Just as long as you handle carrying all the bags of flour inside later!"
A shy smile curled on his lips when he heard his mother say that, he'll always help her regardless of what he does. "Thanks, mom."
"Mhm, now go have your fun. I'll be fine!"
"Thanks Ms. Kang!" Huening Kai beamed brightly, waving excitedly. "Have a good day, thank you for the bread!"
Taehyun held back a playful eye roll as he walked around the counter and over towards his friends who instantly dragged him through the crowded room and out of the bakery where he was instantly greeted by the suns warmth — the cool air wrapped around him like a welcoming blanket as the three of them made their way down the cobbled path.
If the bakery seemed busy, then the town square was even more busier with all of the market stalls buzzing with life as people shouted greetings, some haggling over fish and flowers, while some walked around or stopped by the huge bulletin board to see what new posters were put up — cerys was lively, and he adored it so much.
"Soooo!" Huening Kai spoke up, bumping Taehyun's shoulder to gain his attention as he smiled teasingly, which was definitely a bad sign. "How was last night? Did you manage to write anything? Oh please tell me you managed to write something worth romantic enough!"
"Please tell us you managed to write something," Soobin joined in, staring at him with a curious yet desperate expression. "I don't think I can handle another hour of Hyuka rambling on and on about how perfect you and Yeonjun would be together—"
"Don't say that!" Taehyun interrupted him, instantly panicking at the sudden name drop as he flung forward and covered the elder's mouth. "Keep quiet! Don't say his name, you don't know if someone's listening!"
Huening Kai laughed loudly, most likely at his reaction which made him flush in embarrassment. "Calm down! Not everyone is as nosy as you think they are!" He was not being reassuring at all. "We're just wondering, Tyun! I'm assuming you heard the rumors right? This is your chance!"
Taehyun wanted to scream at that very moment, maybe even bury himself alive so he could somehow escape from this moment. He should've known that hanging out with Soobin and Huening Kai would mean endless teasing and pushing to make him confess to Yeonjun — they think it's so easy... but it's not!! Huening Kai only thinks it's easy because he confidently confessed to Soobin without any worries!
But this... this was Choi Yeonjun, the towns beloved jewel, and Taehyun was far from perfect for him.
"I can lend you some books about romance," Soobin chimed in, bless his heart, always giving out free books to them since his family ran the local library here in cerys. "I know you like reading, and hey! Maybe it'll help you conjure up some—"
"I don't need any books about romance, Bin. Thanks." Taehyun cut him off, bitterly muttering under his breath until he finally realized where they were heading. "Hey! Don't tell me you guys dragged me out of my own bakery just so we can go to Sunoo's dumb coffee shop!"
"It's not dumb, it's convenient," Huening Kai corrected, teasing him lightly as he waltzed on over towards an outdoor table like he owned everything. "Plus! We don't have to go inside and order anything, we can just sit down here and relax while we talk about your love problems!"
"I don't have any love problems!"
"Yeah, says the boy who's been hopelessly pining over the same guy for two years now," Soobin scoffed, taking a seat next to Huening Kai who was already bubbling with excitement. "But on a serious note, are you sure you don't want like... help? We know how badly you want to confess to him, Tyun."
Taehyun bit down on the bottom of his lip, anxiously picking at his nails. He didn't want to talk about this, because they were right! Agh! No matter how hard he tries to deny everything, he desperately needed help and some sort of way to somehow confess to Yeonjun! And sure, he could be basic and confess like any normal person would (with words) but he wanted something grand and amazing, something that just shows he's worthy of holding the towns beloved jewel's heart.
But hell, he can't even act normal around Yeonjun, so how the hell was he supposed to confess?!
Okay. So he might be the post pathetic person in all of cerys ever.
"Yeonjun is a sweetheart, Taehyun," Huening Kai said, his tone more calmer once he noticed his friend's rising panic. "No matter what happens, I'm sure he's going to treat you kindly, not smack you across town."
"You don't know that." Taehyun groaned, running a hand through his hair as he looked away, trying to distract himself. "Trust me, guys, I want to confess... I really do, and if the rumors of him... searching for a partner is true, I want to be the one for him."
"Hey! You could always get a truth serum, like a bottle of it!" Soobin perked up, beaming with delight at his "amazing" recommendation, which earned him two judgmental stares. "What's with that look?! It can actually help!"
"A truth serum... as in... a magic potion type shit?" Taehyun asked slowly, in utter disbelief at his friend's words, he nearly laughed. "Okay, Bin... okay." He muttered, fully judging him.
"What?!" Soobin's voice cracked, pouting like a child as he stared at the other two with a confused expression. "I overheard some townsfolk who came back from the town over, they said that some people were selling magic serums! One of them was a truth serum, and the other was a love serum! A love serum sounds absolutely cool! It could get someone to fall in love—"
"— you know magic is banned in cerys, right?"
Silence soon dawned upon them when Taehyun had swiftly cut Soobin off with the harsh truth, and for a moment, he felt awful suddenly cutting his friend off when he was in the middle of trying to help him with his issues — but it was true! Magic was banned from Cerys, hell... he doesn't even know if magic really existed or the serums that Soobin was talking about were some weird shady drinks being handed by weird people!
There had been talk and talk for years about magic and such, and though he had never seen any sorts of magic himself in person, he's heard rumors that some villages far from the kingdom's capital or cerys village had their own magical tendencies and had those who were able to conjure up magical purities for others.
But of course, he believes that they're all lies. Magic was banned in cerys and the kingdom's capital, and it would always remain that way... maybe because the king didn't want people feeding into those ridiculous claims and such.
"It would be nice though, right?" Huening Kai spoke up, smiling sweetly to ease the tension surrounding them. "A serum to help you spew out the truth, all of the feelings in your heart to someone..."
It did sound nice... but it terrified him.
The three of them fell silent just for a bit, it was obvious the couple was waiting for Taehyun to say something or anything — he knew the both of them meant well, but gosh... it was just so frustrating how stressed out this whole entire thing made him, all because he can't confess like a normal person would. Maybe he should just make a heart shaped loaf of bread and give it to Yeonjun, pray for the best, and hope it would be him to be by his side in the future!
After a bit, Soobin sighed loudly and shook his head. "How about we walk around town? I heard that Jeongin has new art supply sets! Let's go see if he'll let us mess with them!"
"That sounds like a great idea," Huening Kai was quick to agree, nodding his head like an eager puppy. "What do you think, Tyun? Let's go ease your mind! No more Yeonjun talk, love talk, we'll discuss that all later! Let's hang out, the three of us before you're drowning in flour later."
A small smile broke loose on Taehyun's face, the idea of hanging out with his best friends was enough to ease his racing heart. "Yeah, I don't mind at all. It gives me something else to do besides roll bread around for hours on end."
"That's the spirit!" Huening Kai stood up from his chair abruptly, nearly knocking it down as he startled his poor boyfriend next to him. "And hey! Maybe you can paint some sort of love confession for Yeonjun! That's so romantic!—"
"Hyuka..." Taehyun groaned, he really thought they were over with that topic.
"— come on! What's the worst that can happen? You faint on spot or get rejected?"
All of those things! Everything can go wrong!
With an exhausted sigh, he shook his head and decided to keep his peace for now, just standing up from his chair and tuning out the amount of rambling that was going on as he began to walk away from the duo who quickly followed after him like some ducklings, yet he was too distracted to even care.
What's the worse that can happen? Everything.
But... the truth serum stuff Soobin rambled on about... it was interesting indeed, but he knew there was no point in hoping for something that wasn't real at all.
If only there was a way he could just... have Yeonjun confess first, to cinfirm that he loved him back.
But for now, he'll handle it later and ignore everything else — even if his heart felt like it was being crushed to bits and pieces.
A few hours passed by, and the sun was finally starting to set over cerys village.
Thankfully, since it was later in the day and some of the markets were closing up along with other townsfolk heading home to tend to their families, the hours at the bakery went by slow... painfully slow.
As much as he adored the hours that went by slow and steady, only a few customers (one or two at most) coming in time to time to buy something, giving him a moment to properly breathe and such — he liked it when it was more busier so he wouldn't be stuck inside with all of his loud thoughts.
The hang out with Soobin and Huening Kai was healing, it made his anxiety fade away, but gosh... did their words get into his head a bit too much for his own liking.
"Yeonjun is a sweet heart, Taehyun ... no matter what happens, I'm sure he's going to treat you kindly, not smack you across town."
"What's the worse that can happen? You faint on the spot or get rejected?"
Now, he knows his friends meant well, even if they were so pushy, he knew they only wanted what's best for him. But all of the things they said about him confessing to Yeonjun... being rejected was exactly what he was afraid of — and he knew rejection was normal, but it still hurt... and he wasn't ready to face a pain like that, not yet.
Taehyun huffed out another bored breath, absentmindedly rearranging the bread display for what had to be the hundredth time now, his hands trembling as he rearranged the same three loaves again... and again... and again.
But when he wasn't bothering the bread display he went over to the front where he began playing with the gold coins from the large glass jar next to him. Sliding them back and forth across the counter like some pathetic race, clinkimg them together just to create noise for him to be distracted, or even stacking them on top of one another to see how tall he could get it without it falling! (top score so far: forty five coins!)
But no matter what he does to try and distract himself from his thoughts, it was like Huening Kai's voice and words echoed through his mind like a taunting cursed lullaby, and the memory of Soobin's smug/teasing smile made it all worse! His friends... and much as he loved them, were absolutely no help with his romance issues.
I can't just plainly confess like that... I don't want to do something simple... he's the towns jewel, he's adored by everyone. Taehyun pursed his lips tightly, his thoughts spiraling once more as he knocked over a mini gold coin tower he had built. I'd just embarrass myself! I can't do anything romantic at all, I lost sleep last night over writing a love letter! A dumb love letter! Who even does that anymore?!
Another irritated groan escaped from him as he slapped a hand over his face, he seriously needed help. It's been weeks now and he's still stressing over something as stupid as this! At this point, he should just ignore his feelings and pretend Yeonjun doesn't exist, or maybe he should confess in the worst way possible so he can get rejected and he won't have to worry about anything anymore!
He's supposed to be busy baking bread, muffins, all of that stuff! Not busy sobbing over his pathetic love life!
ding!
"Welcome to Kang's Bakery," Taehyun said monotonously on autopilot when he heard the small bell above the door ring out, eyes still glued to the counter below him as he rearranged the gold coins again, not bothering to even look up. "Let me know if you need anything. We have a limited supply on honey cinnamon bread right now—"
"Pfft."
Taehyun froze, his eyes widening when he heard a laugh. A familiar laugh that was filled with warmth, comfort, and perfection.
a laugh that he knew all too well.
No... no no... am I daydreaming? I'm going insane. Aren't I...?
He was certain that he was hearing things, that his mind was just so stressed out it was playing some stupid trick on him! But when he finally blinked a couple of times to bring himself back to reality, Taehyun slowly looked up from his spot and over towards the doorway.
"You sound absolutely miserable, was it a rough day today or something?"
In that moment, his entire world and heart stopped.
Standing there in the doorway like some sort of pretty prince, with the sun shining beautifully behind him, was Choi Yeonjun.
For a moment, Taehyun was certain he might've been hallucinating or something! After the whole mess he went through today, he was certainly daydreaming! But when he saw that sweet enchanting smile grow on the elder's lips, in a way that was soft and filled with amusement that made his heart race — his soul immediately attempted to escape his body.
Holy shit.
What the hell— wait a damn minute!?
"Y-Yeonjun?!" Taehyun choked, then immediately coughed as he stood up straighter than ever, his eyes beaming with both confusion and excitement. "HI! I mean— hi! Hey... hi....! Y-You're back!" He paused, eyes narrowing in realization. "Wait, why are you back? Weren't you supposed to return tomorrow?"
Calm and at ease my fucking ass! Holy shit, I'm going to throw myself in front of a horse carriage— what the hell am I saying?!
Yeonjun laughed again, just casually walking into the bakery as if he hadn't just nearly made Taehyun's heart burst into flames. "We came home early!" He said, his eyes scanning the shelves of baked goods. "I came here right away, hoping you guys weren't closed or sold out... but thank god I came right on time, didn't I?"
Taehyun felt his ears start to burn red, an awkward yet warm smile curled on his lips as he grabbed a paper bag — ready to package anything that Yeonjun touches. "Y-Yeah! We still have some things still for sale!" Oh my god. Calm down Kang! Stop getting excited because he went to see you first! "Do you want the raspberry rolls? Or maybe the orange zest muffins? W-We also have lemon muffin bars if you want!—"
"Taehyun—"
"— we also still have a loaf of honey cinnamon bread!" Taehyun started to ramble on, lying just a little bit! He'd have to go to the back to make one... but that's fine! "Do you want those, I'll even give you a discount since you've been gone for so long!—" It's only been a week. "— actually everything is free! Wait. No. It's not— but for you it could be!—"
Oh god. He's losing his mind. He's embarrassing himself. What the FUCK.
What the hell Kang Taehyun?! He started to panic, his mouth was just moving and spewing out words on its own!! Completely betraying him!! He's done. He's moving far away. Forever.
"— Taehyun!" Yeonjun called out, interrupting him with a sweet laugh as he shook his head. "Just surprise me! I don't mind anything, your bakery has the best baked goods in all of cerys, so whatever you give me I know it'll be delicious! I'll pay too."
Taehyun pursed his lips tightly, a faint pink hue was painted across his face when he heard those words. Agh! Nice going, Kang! Made an absolute fool of yourself! But... surprise him? How the hell am I supposed to surprise him?! Ninety percent of the things in this damn building are just bread loafs!
But, with an awkward smile, he shakily grabbed onto one of the boxes that they use for large orders (usually his mother scolds him for using boxes, since they're hard to come by... but he'll take this scolding if it meant that Yeonjun was happy!) before he started shoving the best looking pastries into it with trembling hands, nearly dropping a small loaf on the first try.
I can't believe he came to me first before anything else. Taehyun bit down on his lip to hide his smile, not wanting to appear... crazy or whatever! I mean— he most likely stopped by somewhere else, right? Like his home! Obviously I'm not first but...
Before he could finish whatever thought came into mind, he suddenly paused when a specific memory replayed. The one of those two old ladies who came by the bakery earlier, the ones who were gossiping loudly like crazy amongst themselves, the ones who said that Yeonjun... was looking... for a potential... partner.
Taehyun couldn't help it, but he soon gazed over at Yeonjun who was in his own world, checking out the pastries all lined up in front of him as he waited patiently for him to finish packaging everything up, and without even realizing it... a light scowl washed over his face.
Now, he was a curious person, always had been and always will be! And now that he's heard of... news.. that the boy he's pathetically head over heels for is searching for a partner, he wanted to know if it was seriously true or not, because if it was true...
Ugh, he doesn't even know what he would do. If only... if only he knew what Yeonjun thought about him, or if there were any signs he could show to prove that his love was reciprocated.
No matter how desperately he wanted to just drop everything and ask Yeonjun whether the rumors were true or not, he bit down on his lip and decided to stay silent for now... they were rumors after all.
And for now... he'd just find a better, proper, and extravagant way to confess to him.
Maybe he should just give him a damn love letter and go, this was so frustrating!
After a moment, he finally closed the box and stared at it for a brief second before gently calling out Yeonjun's name, who instantly smiled as he stepped forward and handed him some gold coins and accepted the box with pretty stars in his eyes, his fingers brushing against Taehyun's for just a split second, nearly making him drop the damn pastry box.
"Thanks, Taehyun," Yeonjun spoke with full
gratitude and sweetness in his tone. "You're always so generous. That's why I like coming here."
The compliment shouldn't have meant anything, but it meant everything to Taehyun. He could practically feel the way his ears started to burn with that heated desire once again as he quickly pulled back. A shy yet gentle smile grew on his face, trying to act calm and nonchalant as if he weren't about to literally explode on spot.
"Thank you, I like it when you come here—" He suddenly paused, realizing how... awkward that sounds, quickly hissing in a breath he smiled nervously. "I mean— not like that, but it's always so good to see you and uh—"
Yeonjun only laughed, catching him off guard when he had leaned forward and
ruffled his head in such a gentle manner it nearly made Taehyun choke, scream, and die on the spot. "Don't worry, I get what you mean!" He said, taking a step back. "By the way, we should hang out soon! It's been a while since I hung out with you, Kai, and Bin. I missed you guys."
Without giving him any time to reply or even process what he had just said, Yeonjun waved brightly before he turned around and left the shop — leaving Taehyun standing there like an absolute idiot, his mouth gaped open like some strange fish out of water as he stared at the door that slowly closed, his brain lagging and having difficulties catching up with what had just happened.
But then, it finally hit him all at once.
holy. fucking. shit.
Yeonjun... wants to... hang out with him. He wants to hang out with him!! He even said that he missed him, oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh!!!
Okay... well... technically he did include Huening Kai and Soobin, since he's good friends with them too, but... still!!! Yeonjun said he missed him, that he wants to hang out with him— holy shit his heart can't handle this. First a surprise visit, then those sweet words, and now this?! He's definitely going to throw himself in front of a horse carriage now!
"Oh my god..." Taehyun whispered, barely able to stand properly now, slowly sinking onto the floor in pure shock and disbelief, his heart racing at such a fast pace it made him feel lightheaded. "What the hell just happened— holy shit... he wants to hang out with me... oh my—"
ding!
"Yeonjun?!" He exclaimed loudly, like an excited puppy as he shot up like a rocket — expecting to see the elder standing there with a smile on his face, maybe roses, and ready to ask him out! But instead, to his utter disappointment... he only saw...
"...Oh. Soobin." Taehyun muttered, his excitement deflating almost instantly as he sank down onto the counter with a small frown.
"Wow," Soobin snorted, raising his brow as if he were completely unimpressed. "That's not a nice, warm, welcome! Where's my greeting? I walked all this way to see you."
"Oh shut up! What do you want? A muffin?" Taehyun grumbled, maybe he shouldn't take his anger out on his friend but man... he really was hoping it was Yeonjun. "And don't act innocent! You planned it, didn't you? Walking in right after Yeonjun left!"
A small snort escaped from Soobin as he shook his head, an amused smile growing on his lips, waltzing on over towards the front counter. "Sorry to disappoint that I'm not your little prince, but I came here for a snack and to tell you something," He hummed, and before Taehyun could ask, he suddenly placed a newspaper on the counter. "Someone came to the library talking about this, thought you'd be interested in it."
Taehyun raised his brow, he wasn't really one to read the newspaper since it had boring stories or lame news from other villages, but since Soobin had come all this way just to deliver some dumb paper to him, it must be important. So with a small sigh, he picked up the paper as his eyes started to scan all of the words on it.
And that's when a small smirk grew on Soobin's face, seeing Taehyun's expression start to shift.
"Is this...?"
"Mhm," Soobin hummed, crossing his arms as he leaned onto the counter, glancing at the paper. "A new traveling merchant took place in dior village, he's got real good and rare stuff! I heard it's from the east too, and you mentioned that you wanted to confess to Yeonjun with something grand, right?"
Taehyun hesitated, wanting to just deny whatever dumb words he had said earlier, to escape from this moment. But, betrayed by his own heart, he slowly nodded — and that was enough for Soobin to smile warmly as he placed a hand on the newspaper and brought it down, just so they could face each other properly while talking.
"This merchant has things you can buy, rarities and jewels that cerys village never receives," Soobin said, tilting his head, and that's when Taehyun realized what he was trying to do. "You could go to the village, find that merchant, buy something so extravagant and propose to Yeonjun with it. Then nobody in the village will judge you, they'll be proud that you're doing something beautifully grand for him!"
Taehyun felt his mouth run dry hearing those words, there was a strange gnawing sensation bubbling in his stomach the longer he stared at the elder who seemed happier than ever telling him this news — and in all honesty? He was grateful, because it gave him an idea... one that could possibly either be the most stupidest or most brilliant one he's ever conjured up in his life! Besides the creation of egg tarts of course.
This... this could be my chance. Something rare, something useful, and the town won't shun me down. I can get him something special, and he'll have to accept me... right?
Plus, it gives him an opportunity to venture out to dior village which he heard was a wealthy village (not as wealthy as cerys), and they always had some pretty rare stuff there!
But the bakery... His brows began to furrow in reconsideration, looking around the whole area he adored so much. ...I can't leave my mother here alone, but I...
"Will you and Hyuka go?" Taehyun catiously asked, glancing up at the other with a hopeful expression, who only raised a brow. "This sounds like an adventure for you two, since you always talk about wanting to leave town or whatever."
"Leaving town to head to dior village does sound nice, but unfortunately the library is getting new stuff... and Hyuka has to tend to the jewelry store since important nobles will visit soon," Soobin said, leaving Taehyun disappointed. "But you don't have anything, don't you? You can easily go, you're nineteen now! Old enough to travel by yourself."
He is old enough to travel alone, but he's never done that before.
Whenever they would need supplies that were out of town, Mr. Jung would usually step up to have them delivered to their bakery ever since his father passed away. He was content on staying in cerys for as long as possible too! Why leave when he had everything he needed and everyone he loved in this comfortable village?
But now... he was having second thoughts on his own vows. He really did like Yeonjun, a lot, and being with him made his heart flutter so much — but he needed some sort of grand way to confess, and here was an opportunity opening up right before him!
However, the thought of leaving cerys village, even for a few days scared him.
But the thought of losing Yeonjun scared him even more.
"You're right." Taehyun shot up, slamming his hand on the counter with newfound determination, startling Soobin. "I need to get this confession done and over with! You're the best, Bin! Thank you so much!"
"Huh?? So suddenly? I mean you're welcome but—" Before Soobin could say anything else, Taehyun rushed over and started pushing him towards the door, throwing him off guard. "— hey! wait! I want to buy a muffin for me and Hyuka!—"
"Sorry! We're closed! I have to talk to my mom!" Taehyun said, shoving his poor best friend out of the building and slammed the door shut, making sure to flip the sign before he took a step back.
He'll give Soobin a free muffin, later. But for right now, he has his mind set on something new!
So, with a deep breath, he took a moment to collect his thoughts before he practically bolted through the entire area, through the kitchen, and upstairs where he saw his mother resting peacefully on the couch with some papers in her hands, most likely counting the sales and marking down whatever supplies they need.
Completely unaware of the emotional warfare about to take place.
Before he could step into the living room, he suddenly paused, feeling anxious at the thought of even leaving town. I mean.. it's not that big of a deal... right? I can't just leave her— well... this is important, I have to confess! But... what if she says no? I mean, I won't be mad but I also will be disappointed—
"Taehyun," His mother suddenly spoke up, without even turning her head to look at him. "You don't have to stand there like a ghost, you can come sit down if you want. I assume you closed up the shop for the day?"
Taehyun froze, feeling his face flush as if he had just been caught stealing or something! But unfortunately, he was just embarrassed that he was just standing there like an idiot. "Uh... yeah, I did close up for the day," He muttered, slowly walking over towards her. "But I just wanted to... check up on you!"
His mother didn't say anything for a moment, only until she sighed softly and gently placed the papers down onto the table, looking up at him with a raised brow. "You're acting suspicious, what do you want?"
Taehyun winced hearing that, okay... he didn't mean to be that obvious, but he was nervous! "What? I can't... I just can't come in here to bond with my hardworking, beautiful, strong mother—"
"Kang Taehyun."
"Okay okay!" He held up his hands, already defeated when she said his full name. Gosh, was his mother scary when being so serious! "So... Soobin came in just a few minutes ago, with some news."
"Mhm, Soobin's a sweet boy. Did you give him those muffins he always orders?"
...uh
"Yeah! Totally! Anyways," Taehyun coughed, clearing his throat. "There's been some news that... in dior village, the town over, that there's been new merchants and travelers here and there selling... things."
His mother's gaze dropped, a frown curling on her lips which was definitely a bad sign... but he's not going to give up now! No matter how terrified he was in this very moment.
"And I was wondering... to y'know... improve our business and maybe bring in more customers..." And for me to buy something extravagant!! "...that I should head over there for a bit! Get out of town and see all of the things they have there!"
His mother was silent, staring at him with an expression that screamed 'you're an idiot', and it was doing no good to his heart! His nerves were going absolutely crazy, and maybe the excuse was.. sorta dumb and absolutely pathetic, but he needed this. Just to prove his worth that he's perfect for Yeonjun, that he can win his heart.
"All of a sudden?" His mother soon spoke up, her tone unsure. "You never want to leave cerys, Tyun... usually you'd commission Mr. Jung do to it... so why so sudden?"
Taehyun grimaced slightly, hissing in an awkward breath knowing she had caught him red handed, right in the sore spots! There's no way he can lie his way out of this one either, this was way out of character for him! He'd always stay home, no matter what the opportunity was.
But he desperately needed this!
"I just thought it would be nice to have a change of scenery for once," Taehyun replied, trying his best to keep his voice calm, though he wanted nothing more than to just throw himself down the stairs because... he doesn't even trust himself speaking anymore! "To finally venture out of town, to see new things... maybe even find some delicacies to bring back! I just... think it's time for me to get out of this town for once."
His mother stared at him, her expression unreadable but her eyes were burning into his soul, as if she were trying to hard to read him and see the real truth. He was certain she was going to deny his offer, tell him to send someone else to dior village, since he had never ventured out of town alone before.
But instead, with a gentle sigh, she visibly relaxed. "You do know that... the travel distance from here to dior village is nearly three days time, right?" She asked, earning a nervous nod. "And you're certain you want to do this, for your first trip ever?"
Taehyun bit down on the bottom of his lip, reconsidering the offer for a split second, but when he thought about Yeonjun and that sweet smile of his, the rumors, and just everything else... it sparked his motivation even more.
"I'm certain." He said firmly, nodding his head. "I want to do this."
There was a beat of silence, his words hung in the air like they were some sort of sharp knives, and it was really terrifying him! His mother was never this silent when he asked her things, but... he had a bit of understanding for her, he was asking for a big favor, one he had never done before.
"You've always been so stubborn when your mind is set on something," His mother soon spoke up, leaning back into the sofa as if she had been defeated. "I'll allow you to go, but you have to promise me to be safe! Have fun as well, okay? Don't get hurt."
In that moment, happiness had bloomed within Taehyun's heart like flowers on a spring day. A wide and grateful smile grew on his face as he sprung forward and hugged his mother, hands trembling with pure excitement. "Thank you thank you thank you! I swear I'll be safe! I'll even make some good sales there!"
"You don't have to worry about sales at all, just have fun," His mother said, unable to hold back the smile that grew on her face as she gently patted his back. "You'll leave next week, okay? You still have to help out around the bakery."
"I'll work my hardest! Thank you!"
"Yeah yeah, now go wash up, it's been a long day. I'll have dinner ready soon."
With one last gentle squeeze, Taehyun pulled away from the hug, smiling brightly as he walked out of the room and headed over to his own room — the excitement bubbling in his chest like a storm! This was it, his chance to finally find something worthy enough to propose to Yeonjun with!
But gosh... was he nervous.
This would be his first time leaving cerys by himself, his first time visiting a town that wasn't his own, being gone for more than a day! And... he should just give into the voice in the back of his head that was screaming at him to stay home... right?
...
Absolutely not.
He's not going to waste this opportunity, his chance to finally be confident in who he was, and win the heart of the boy he's admired dearly for years now! He's going to have to thank Soobin later for giving him such a great idea!
Now... all he has to do, is a wait a week.. which is a long time for now!
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊
The next week arrived way too soon.
Maybe it was the growing anticipation that made the next week arrive too soon! Or the fact that for the past few days he'd been so focused on making sure that whatever confession he had for Yeonjun goes well, that whatever he finds at dior village, it is perfect for the elder!
When he wasn't stuffing his face in dough or busy scrubbing flour, sugar, or crumbs off of his hands — he would be drowning in all types of difficult scenarios and worrying thoughts: What if things went wrong? What if he heads to the village for nothing? What if he weren't able to find anything?
It was absolutely terrifying, and he felt a little bit stupid leaving town just to find a perfect proposal gift for Yeonjun, but he wanted nothing but the best for the elder.
Thank god he had his friends though, to distract him from everything and all of his troubles, along with helping him be less awkward around Yeonjun whenever they hung out together (he still cannot process the fact that Yeonjun wanted to hang out with him!!).
And the days at the bakery were well, busy and difficult but he loved it regardless. He still had some second thoughts about staying, just so he could help his mother out with everything, he felt terrible leaving her.
But after being reassured that adventuring out of town was okay, he felt content... and less worried than before.
Now, it was finally the day that he takes his leave from cerys village and head out to dior, and it was like nature itself was ready for his new adventure! With the beautiful golden sun stretching its rays so brightly over the cobblestone street, the air crisp and wind flowing gently, it was like it was sending a sign that this trip was perfect for Taehyun!
And thanks to Mr. Jung, he wouldn't have to suffer walking the whole three days to dior village! He's allowing him to borrow his horse, Aengdu, for the meanwhile to speed up the journey! Gosh... will he get a years worth of free bread loafs for being so kind.
I have everything... don't I...? He furrowed his brows, tightening the straps of the saddle, making sure all of his supplies were secure — his satchel, dried goods, spare clothes, and the rolled up, barely legible old map he had received from Soobin. I mean... I don't really need much besides clothes and blankets? I'm definitely going to have to camp out on some nights...
Thank god his mother packed him some bread loafs, tight in a white cloth, he won't be starving while out there!
"Taehyun-ah!"
A bright smile grew on the males face when he heard a familiar voice, quickly turning his head and saw both Soobin and Huening Kai approaching him with eager expressions — Huening Kai carried a small package in his hand, while Soobin had something tucked under his arm.
"I can't believe you're actually leaving! Stepping out of town!" Huening Kai exclaimed, rushing over to give him a warm hug while also rubbing his stomach in a comforting manner. "I'm surprised your mother even let you go! And... you really want to confess to Yeonjun properly, huh?"
A light shade of pink washed over Taehyun's face as he scoffed loudly, gently pushing his friend off of him. "It's not just for Yeonjun, Kai," He's... kinda lying. But he's excited to finally adventure out of town! "I'm heading to the village to see new things, meet kind people... and find a nice proposal gift..."
"So basically for Yeonjun."
Before Taehyun could shout at him, or even smack him across the face in pure embarrassment, Soobin laughed softly and stepped up. "We wanted to give you a few more materials for your journey," He said and handed him the item he was carrying, a small folded blanket. "This is for when the weather shifts like... ten degrees when you pass by the bridge."
"And this has medicinal herbs, snacks, and matches in it!" Huening Kai said, holding up the small package before he practically shoved it into the satchel that was hanging off of Aengdu, making the poor horse snort in irritation. "We don't want you freezing to death! My mother made that dry fruit snack you adore so much for you!"
Taehyun blinked, caught off guard by the kind gestures, and his heart was beating so fast with warmth he couldn't help but smile shyly. "You guys didn't have—"
"We didn't have to, yeah yeah, don't even start with the mushy stuff!" Soobin interrupted, waving his hand with a cheeky grin. "We care for you! So obviously we're going to give you stuff to survive out there. Just come back alive and maybe with bags filled with pretty, rare, and magical stuff!"
Huening Kai snorted at the mention of magic, there was no way the elder was still going on about that stuff. "Yep! We've done all we can to make sure you'll survive! It's a rough journey traveling so far out, so... please don't make us hear news about your body being found near some river bank. I'll drag your ass back down from heaven if I have to!"
Taehyun laughed lightly at them, they were so sweet for giving him all of these stuff, it made him want to stay and not leave (even if it's temporary). But maybe they're being just a bit too dramatic about this whole thing, but either way... he's grateful.
"Thank you guys," He said gently, his grip around the rolled up blanket tightened slightly. "But you don't have to worry too much. I'll be fine! It's just a few days on the road, all I'll see are trees, dirt, and water if I'm lucky enough."
"Yeah... just be careful okay? That map I gave you, it barely looked updated," Soobin said, his tone dropping down to one full of worry. "Do you want me to get you another one? I swear we had a good one somewhere!—"
"It's fine! I swear!" Taehyun interrupted him before he could run off to the library and throw books eveyrwhere to look for a map, they've already done so much for him... he'll feel guilty for making them do more. "The map is easy to ready, and it's mostly traveling straight. I'll be fine I swear."
Though Soobin wasn't really convinced, he soon gave in when he felt Huening Kai squeeze his hand reassuringly.
"Well then, you have fun on your travel! And don't worry about your mom or the bakery," Huening Kai said, slowly dragging Soobin along with him as they walked over towards the bakery. "We'll help her out when she needs it and when we're free! Don't take too long okay? Set off before the sun sets!"
Taehyun snorted, it was still morning, so it would be a long time before the sun sets, but nonetheless he nodded his head, eyes glistening with warmth as he watched his two best friends disappear behind the door. And with a soft exhale, he turned back towards Aengdu, tilting his head as he tried to think of ways on how to adjust the bags with all of these—
"Going somewhere? Without saying goodbye?"
Taehyun froze when a new voice — one that didn't belong to neither Soobin or Hyuka, suddenly appeared behind him, making his heart drop.
Nearly dropping the things in his hands, Taehyun turned around quickly, his eyes widening and expression brightening when he saw Yeonjun walking towards him with a lazy smile, hands tucked into his pockets as his loose tunic swayed gently in the wind, eyes filled with nothing but warmth.
"Yeonjun!" Taehyun exclaimed, maybe a little too loudly. "Hey! Y-You don't have uhm.. mayors son business to attend to?" Oh gosh, he wants to wince from how pathetic he sounds.
Yeonjun raised a brow, visibly amused by his reaction. "Nah, day off, thank god... it's so hard attending to everyone's issues," He said, teasing just a little before his gaze turned towards his horse. "Looks like a pretty serious trip, where are you heading? What's the occasion? How come I didn't know about this?"
All of the questions were driving Taehyun insane, he didn't expect Yeonjun to care this much! Like... sure he didn't really bring the topic up to anyone else besides his mother and his two best friends... but he didn't expect anyone to really care.
It made him feel just a little bit bad for not telling Yeonjun, but this trip was for him!
But he was absolutely not going to tell him that it was for him, hell fucking no.
"Just uh... for herbs," Taehyun muttered, cringing at his lame ass excuse, he could always visit Sakura's store for herbs. "Very rare ones! Also to make sales and uh... find some things," He waved vaguely in the direction of literally anywhere, man... what was he even saying at this point? "I'm heading to dior village! long trip... but i'm excited! First time traveling! Ah ha... ha...ha."
Yeonjun raised a brow, clearly unconvinced by his answer, but he didn't bother questioning thank god. "First time trip? Dior village? That's a long trip," He said, stepping closer before he pulled something from his pocket. "Then you'll need this, take care."
Taehyun's brows furrowed, glancing down at whatever he had just pulled out of his pocket, expecting some sort of random gold coin — but instead, it was a small, delicate heart shaped pendant that seemed to made out of a precious white stone. It had a gold lining around the border and carved beautifully in the middle was a dove with tiny hearts etched in its wings, with a tiny peony shaped flower was hanging out of its mouth.
For a moment, Taehyun felt as if he were dreaming, that this moment was certainly not real and that the beautiful pendant in front of him was a figment of his imagination.
It wasn't until reality crashed down on him, making him nearly choke. "W-What is this for?! It looks so delicate and expensive!"
"It's my good luck charm," Yeonjun said so casually has if he weren't just simply handing him something so precious and extravagant! "I usually take this with me on long trips, keeps me safe and such. Figured you could use it too, have that good luck while traveling, especially since this is your first time heading out of cerys."
Taehyun felt his throat tightened hearing those sweet words, a fuzzy sensation began to swirl in his stomach as his head started to spin. He was in utter disbelief that Yeonjun was trusting him with something so precious— holy fuck his heart was racing so fast he's going to pass out.
He hesitated for a moment as he slowly reached out for the pendant, gently taking it in his hands before he turned it over in his palm, staring down at it with pure stars in his eyes, biting down on his bottom lip to hold back from smiling like an idiot. It was so beautiful — just like Yeonjun.
"Th-Thank you," He breathed out, looking up at the elder with a sweet serene smile. "I'll take good care of it. I appreciate you so much!"
A satisfied smile grew on Yeonjun's face, eyes twinkling with joy from the sweet praise. "You better, don't want the best baker in town getting hurt now," He playfully teased, earning a soft scoff from the younger. "I expect a nice little haul when you return. Show all of the nice things you got."
Before Taehyun could reply, Yeonjun suddenly stepped forward and reached out, ruffling his hair with nothing but warmth and gentleness in his action while he laughed softly. "Be safe, Taehyun," He spoke tenderly. "Come home safely."
And with that, Yeonjun slowly pulled away, giving him one last gentle glance before he turned away and began to head down the road to where the town square was, most likely to tend to business as he left Taehyun behind — leaving him standing there like an absolute idiot with his heart thudding heavily against his chest like some sort of thundering drum, his fingers curling around the pendant tightly as his whole entire body felt like it was heating up.
What the fuck.
Taehyun's mind was lagging, brain gears churning awfully slow as he stared at Yeonjun's retreating figure before he glanced down at the pendant, a dopey, idiotic, lovestruck smile blooming on his face.
What the fuck just happened— He felt like he couldn't breathe, holy shit. If he isn't mine by the time I come back I'm absolutely throwing myself in front of three horse carriages.
With one last breath, he quickly slapped himself back to reality. Alright! He can't let this opportunity go to waste just because the love of his life just handed him a pendant and ruffled his head, sorta pathetic if he folded that bad — agh! He needs to get going soon!
For the next ten to fifteen minutes, he made sure to double— no, triple check that he had everything. Heading inside the bakery to wish his mother and friends one final goodbye who followed him on outside, helping him mount his horse and wishing him sweet farewells.
"Take care of yourself, Tyun-ah!"
"Come back home safe!"
"Please don't die! We need you to make our bread."
Damn Huening Kai.
With a soft snort, Taehyun took one last glance at the pendant in his hands, placing it against his chest as he closed his eyes to somehow soak in all of the good luck before he pocketed it — unrolling the sketchy looking map as a small grimace washed over his face.
I can barely see anything on this map. He glanced over towards Soobin who gave him a worried look. I don't want to bother them, not when I'm about to head out. It's fine.
So with one last sweet smile and small wave, he took off towards the gate of the village, his eyes sparkling with anticipation and excitement.
This was it! The start of his new journey, a new beginning to finally achieve the perfect confession he was looking for... the perfect proposal.
And hopefully, he doesn't get lost... pfft, as if! He's got this! He'll be at Dior in no time!
Taehyun's lost.
He's absolutely positively certainly gut wrenchingly fucking lost.
Taehyun's brows furrowed in frustration as he stared at the map in his trembling hands, trying to focus on the paper in front of him, but the sound of Aengdu's hooves clattering against the gravel road and rhe faint howl of the wind swirling around made him completely loose focus — nearly making him want to rip the map up and throw it all away!
"What the fuck..." He muttered, turning the paper upside down, then sideways, brows furrowing deeper when obviously nothing changed. "I swear I took that turn... didn't I?"
At first, the journey was nice and calm! It was only traveling straight for a couple hours, no weird turns or pathways, in sight — he even took a small break to rest his eyes before continuing on! He went on this journey with full confidence... until he passed through the bridge and came to an intersection, which threw everything off guard.
He thought he was fine, it was going to be fine... he had a map! But when he glanced down at the paper in front of him, there was no sign of the intersection at all, leaving him absolutely stumped, and foolishly enough... he decided to listen to his stupid heart and head left which brought him to a shady ass area!
"I swear... I was supposed to stop by a smaller village after passing that bridge," He muttered to himself, glancing up from his paper as he scanned the area around him. Just an empty road, a wall of trees surrounding him, and nothing but nature and silence. "That was supposed to bring me to an open plain... not a hilly forest."
Oh god. Oh god oh god oh god. He's screwed, the sun was already starting to set — bleeding orange and golden rays through the tree branches before shadows all around swallowed it whole, it was only a matter of time until he's completely surrounded in darkness! He needed to find an open area to camp out. Fast.
I should've just gotten a whole new map from Soobin. Taehyun clicked his tongue, nervously glancing at the forest around him — his instincts were screaming at him to just turn back and head home! But there was no point, he was already hours away, no way is he turning back now! It's fine. It's all fine! It's just some hilly forest area, nothing is going to go wrong. It's just trees!
No matter how hard he tried to comfort himself, the strange gut wrenching sensation began to burn harder within him as the forest canopy all around slowly began to swallow him whole. It felt like all of the trees were closing in on him, the light in the sky soon fading into a dark blue hue — making it seem like the shadows around him grow wider.
Stop panicking. Don't panic. It's all fine. It's just the dark, don't be a pussy now. Taehyun tried his best to calm his breathing, holding onto the reins around Aengdu tighter as the temperature seemed to slowly drop and the wind went still as if this area had been frozen in time or something. Oh god. The silence is driving me insane, there's no birds. No rustling. No life— just push forward! Come on!
With a gentle flick of his wrist, he flicked the reins — a signal for Aengdu to go faster as the sun finally set before him, leaving the both of them in complete darkness, but instead of rushing down the pathway faster — Aengdu let out a low whine, suddenly halting in place, muscles tensing.
"Hey!" Taehyun whisper-shouted, growing panicked at his reaction. "I don't like this either, Aengdu! But come on! The faster we get out of the forest, the faster we arrive to a town!"
Aengdu just huffed, angrily.
"Come on!" Taehyun began to grow frustrated, letting loose of the reins as he used both of his hands to pet his mane to somehow soothe him. "I really don't want to deal with your bullshit right now, Aengdu!—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Taehyun suddenly froze when he heard a faint rumble behind him, his heart dropping down to his stomach when he recognized that those of sound.
A low growl.
His breath hitched, head snapping back behind him to see where the sound had come from, goosebumps rising on his skin as he began to slowly freak out. It... it was just part of his imagination, right? There's no way that he heard... any sorts of growls! It was just the tree branches in the wind—
Another growl echoed out, and this time, it was closer.
Shit, shit shit shit shit shit! Taehyun's breathing began to become ragged as he began to look all around him, panic rising inside of him when he finally caught sight of where the sounds originated from. Deep within the shadows, massive shapes began to fade into view — his breath hitching when he saw tall, lean, snarling creatures emerge from the darkness all around them with glowing yellow eyes.
Wolves.
Huge rabid wolves.
The growling became louder as the wolves slowly approached closer towards them, their fur matted as they bared their teeth viciously, showcasing their sharp saliva covered fangs that glistened under the dying light
Oh no.
fuck fuck fuck fuck!
"Aengdu!" Taehyun shrieked when a wolf lunged forward, completely startling the poor horse who let out a terrified shriek. "W-Wait! No no no—"
Taehyun barely had time to grab onto the reins to steady himself before Aengdu had cried out loudly once more when a large wolf had lunged forward in front of him, nipping at his legs which made him immediately jump backwards onto his hind legs — the action caused Taehyun to fly off of the saddle, and with a loud scream, he started to tumble backwards down a steep slope.
"AGH!" Taehyun screamed loudly as the world began to spin, his body tumbling down with such force he could barely stop himself and grab onto something — anything — to stop his fall. Branches all around him snapped against his arms and legs, skin grazing against harsh jagged rocks, and then—
CRACK!
His body had suddenly slammed into a thick tree trunk, his head cracking hard against a large rock — forcing out a sharp gut wrenching wheeze as pain shot through him like a lightning storm, stars bursting in his vision like a meteor shower as his body instantly collapsed to the ground.
Fuck- fuck fuck- agh! Taehyun squeezed his eyes shut as pain began to bloom heavier with every movement, it felt like someone had cut him open and began to stab him with tiny little knives, striking him everywhere in his nervous system. Get up- get up! Get Aengdu— get up!
The entire world around him was spinning, turning into nothing but a blurry mess as he tried to move, yet his limbs refused to cooperate with his motor system — hissing a pained breath as some sort of liquid began to roll down the side of his face.
No... nonononononono! Come on, m-move! You have to get up, you promised!
No matter how desperately he tried to get himself to move from the spot, the burning pain on his back and head pulsed like heavy flames — preventing him from running away, he couldn't even scream! Yet his chest heaved as his panic began to rise, limbs locked in fear and agony, only for his heart to nearly stop when he saw the wolves hulking figures descend the hill down to where he was, snarling, growling, their claws scraping over the roots to reach him.
No— no! I can't die here, not when I promised— I can't die! They're waiting for me!
The growls echoed closer, the shadowy figures began to circle around him as the wolves encased him so he had no where to run, stretching closer and closer until one of the bigger wolves lunged towards him—
BAM!
Before the large wolf could finish him off, a violent burst of dark purple light ripped through the air with a deafening roar — blasting dirt, leaves, and twigs sky high into the air as the giant wolf was blown away into the ground, howling loudly in pain as a giant burn was edged into it.
The other wolves yelped in terror at what they had just saw, their horrifying rabid demeanor decreasing to one that was similar to a pathetic baby rabbit as they began to scatter, running away from the area as their figures disappeared into the darkness.
Taehyun's eyes were blown wide open, his teeth gritting together as he tried to process what the hell he had just witnessed.
What the fuck was that?! He groaned painfully, trying to lift himself off of the ground, but with every blink he felt his eyelids become heavier, his body falling weaker. I'm... I'm hallucinating, I'm seeing things! Oh god, I'm dying. I'm dying i'm dying i'm dying! Where did that purple light come from...? What even was that?!—
Before he could panic any further, he suddenly felt... a pair of hands slide underneath his body, one of them carefully slid under his neck while the other under the back of his knees, slowly pulling him up effortlessly from the forest floor.
who the fuck. who the fuck what the fuck what the fuck?!
Taehyun's instincts surged as panic slammed into him like a harsh wave, his eyes wide in horror as a broken sound gurgled from his throat, thrashing weakly in the persons arms as his limbs flailed with what little strength he had left in him, desperately trying to get away from the strange person, so he can find Aengdu and run!
"Stop moving."
Taehyun's breath hitched when a deep, soothing, honey-like voice spoke up, his gaze slowly moving towards where the persons face was, but he couldn't get a clear look at them at all from how dark it was and how blurry his vision became, yet he didn't let that stop him.
Everything in his body screamed danger, that this person was danger. Even as he gasped in pain, head throbbing like someone was continuously smashing a hammer into it, eyes filling with unwanted tears, he didn't give up the fight as his hand weakly shoved against the persons chest.
Put me down! He tried to conjure up the set of words, his vision becoming more blurry as his head spun harshly, feeling his entire body slowly fall weaker from how exhausted and in pain it was. Put me down. Let me go. Don't touch me.
But the person didn't let him go.
Instead, they adjusted him gently, holding onto him tighter as if he were some fragile jewel, ignoring his pathetic excuse of a fight as he began to walk away down some random path — sparking more panic.
Holy shit, he was being kidnapped! No no no no—
"So fucking irritating."
Taehyun's brows furrowed at how annoyed the person was, but he could barely see — only through his blurred, dizzy vision, he finally caught glimpse of dark red hair and faintly glowing purple eyes when a bit of moonlight seeped through the branches and landed down on the person ever so perfectly, confusion instantly crashing down on him.
No, he wasn't going to let that distract him. He was being kidnapped! "Let..." Taehyun strained out, tears spilling down his cheeks as the pain increased by a tenfold, striking every part of nerves harshly. "...me..." Fuck, it hurts!
Before he could muster up the last bit of his sentence, Taehyun felt his strength officially give out, his body falling limp as his head leaned against what he assumed was the persons shoulder. His vision was flashing gray, little black dots scattering his sight as his body began to betray him.
Then, betrayed by his body who had given up fighting against the pain, and the last thing he felt was the persons gentle grip tightening over his figure, refusing to let him fall.
And in that moment, he had finally blacked out.
