Work Text:

They say that when you die, your life flashes right before your eyes. Gem always thought it was stupid. She'd killed many people over the years; she watched as the life from her opponent's eyes dissipate, like water in the nether. She could never understand how 'life flashing before my eyes' would work. She was a logical person, always choosing to go along with the most efficient solution possible. The one that would guarantee success. And so, she deduced that at this very moment, jumping into the void would be the most logical option. It was quick and easy. Sure, it'd be painful as the oxygen slowly left her lungs, and she'd probably regret it if she was honest, but at least it ensured death. If she were to just stab herself, there was a chance she'd get cold feet and pull the sword out before any real damage could be done.

As Gem looked up one last time, she recalled the events of her week, how Pearl visited her with a problem. She and the guys got into a small fight recently. She couldn't remember why, and although she wanted nothing more than to comfort and take her friend's worries away, she instead had been the cause of even more discourse among the boatem crew. She winced, remembering the harsh, critical words she had said to the members in an attempt to defend Pearl. The way her dear friend looked at her with hurt, wondering just how she could say such a thing, brought upon a feeling Gem hadn't felt in a long time.

A trickle down her cheek brought Gem back to her senses. Slumping her shoulders and wiping the stray tear with her thumb, she shrugged off the chestplate, letting the enchanted netherite armour shine on top of bedrock.

She reached for her helmet, hugging it close before setting it down, her unkempt, usually braided hair coming undone as she bent down and removed the clasps on her netherite pants and boots. She chuckled depricatingly. She always wore the boots. They always made her feel tall. Strong. Like she could take on anything. But as Gem stepped forward, leaving her boots to stand empty, she realized she could never run away from her- the girl so short in stature that she was always mistaken a few years younger than she was. She envied Pearl. How her friend was always so tall and looked like nothing could topple her down, but could cry in front of Gem, like her show of weakness didn't bother her. Gem could never be like that. She hid her weaknesses behind everything. Behind her mega builds, behind her shield, her chestplate. Behind unthoughtful words that caused her dear friend to look at her with eyes so hurtful it brought her back to a time she didn't want to couldn't remember.

She was procrastinating at this point. Looking down into the void, she could feel something stare right back. Something that made her feel both frightened and welcomed. As a figure above the hole faintly screamed her name, Gem took one step forward, towards the empty space, and closed her eyes for the final time.

Notes:

would be open to do a part 2 from Pearl's perspective or perhaps Gem's backstory if enough people are interested ^^
