Enid freezes. She knows that voice. She’s watched both movies four times, each. She has all five books, three of them signed. She’s watched interviews and conferences. She turns to her iPad and there she is: Wednesday Addams. Looking at her, one eyebrow raised, head tilted slightly to the side.
“Uhh… hi?” she squeaks out, face burning and mouth gaping open.

“May her allegiance never waver,” the spirit of the wolves had sworn in her presentation, and vanished with a stout and dark-haired thing left crouching in her wake.
“Hello,” had said the empress, “aren’t you a pretty one?”
(A thousand years ago, it's said, the Empress favoured her guardian. Today, the story's not quite lost to time.)
