Have we met before?

Summary:

[School Castes AU]

A small table in a bar, books and papers scattered around, two cups of coffee and long glances exchanged sideways, without the other person noticing how their heart was yielding. Yearning for something they couldn’t have. Or at least, that’s what they thought.
“Hey, have we met before… maybe in another life?”

Notes:

It can be read without knowing Amor Fati, but you'll know who "Anna" is only if you read it lol

Work Text:

When Reiner Braun sat down at that small table in that bar near his school, he felt lucky, considering that the place was crowded and almost everyone was busy. Unfortunately, that place was the only one where he could concentrate decently to write that Eldian literature assignment. And unfortunately, Reiner had to do it well or he would risk his starting spot for the next game: coach Magath could be quite strict, especially when it came to school grades.

With his hands in his hair, Reiner didn't really know where to start. Intent as he was on staring at the still almost completely blank sheet of paper, the chatter in the background lulled his concentration, so much so that he didn't notice that person entering the bar, looking around before deciding to stop right in front of his table. He only noticed when a hand with long, slender fingers gently tapped the table just enough to get his attention. And when Reiner looked up, wondering who it was, his eyes widened and  felt perfectly the right moment when his heart started beating wildly without any permission. When his golden eyes met the boy's azure ones and read how agitated he was, and maybe a little embarrassed, Reiner thought he wanted to give him the whole world so that those emotions would disappear from his body. Reiner knew it was absolutely ridiculous, but he would do it only for him.

Reiner recognized him instantly, and how could he not, given how often his eyes ended up staring at him whenever they crossed paths in the school hallways. Class, social groups, clubs… Reiner Braun and Konrad Vanderwood couldn’t be further apart, but ironically (he liked to call it twist of fate) his eyes had never stopped being drawn to his figure, ever since the first time they crossed paths at school. Even though they had never exchanged a word, the two of them, Reiner just couldn’t take his eyes off him; just like a magnet or, maybe worse, a moth to a flame. Because that was the only way Reiner felt he could describe those strange feelings. Because even though they had never spoken to each other before… Reiner Braun felt he already knew him. It was a strange sensation, one that caused a warmth in his chest; and yet, he would never say a word about it aloud. He would jealously guard it to himself. He felt pathetic already, and absolutely did not want to add to the dose by throwing himself into ridicule.

-All the other tables are packed.- His melodious voice brought Reiner back to reality and he forced himself to listen, remaining as impassive as possible, because the quarterback maintained his confidence in every situation (too bad that the slight blush on his cheeks gave him away a little, but Reiner pretended nothing had happened anyway).

-Is this seat free, by any chance?-.

That hopeful look had struck him straight to the heart. “Take the whole table, and me as well while you’re at it,” Reiner immediately thought without any shame.

-Sure, go ahead and sit down.- He exclaimed, instead, without letting any of his most spontaneously hidden thoughts come out. Because Reiner might have decided not to say anything at all, but he was still a boy. One in the midst of an adolescent crisis, with hormones skyrocketing, precisely.

Konrad thanked him with a smile and sat down in the chair in the corner opposite his. He put his bag on the floor and the coffee he had previously ordered, instead, on the table, immediately forgetting it in favor of the material that came out of the bag: headphones, a notepad and a pen. It was then that Reiner went back to staring at his homework, trying not to think about the small and insignificant detail that that had been their first conversation.

But every now and then, whenever Reiner was sure Konrad wasn’t noticing, he would sneak glances at him. Noting how Konrad looked so intently, how he was frowning thoughtfully, how he was holding his pen, how he was playing with his silver-whitish hair without noticing, how the crescent-shaped earring in his right ear was jingling slightly. And the more Reiner looked at him, the stronger that feeling in his chest became.

“Hey, Konrad… have we met before?”

Reiner squeezed the pen in his hand, lowering his gaze, tearing it away from him. But even though Reiner tried not to look at Konrad anymore, he just couldn’t help but do exactly that. “Hah! As if I could actually say that… he’d think I’m a crazy stalker.”

“So even athletes do homework. What a great discovery, I should tell Eren, Armin and Mikasa.” That was the first spontaneous thought that crossed Konrad Vanderwood’s mind, as soon as his gaze fell on his school’s famous quarterback, right after entering that bar.

He had desperately looked for a place to finish writing a song for his band, but the world had brought him straight to that situation, sharing the same table with the boy he had a crush on. “Lucky, huh.”

Yep, truly lucky. Those little moments in which Konrad managed to gaze at him furtively, without anyone noticing, were the only things he had left, after all. Konrad didn’t have the courage to admit it even to his best friends, that’s why he kept everything inside.

How could he ever let them know about his feelings, when he had always been the first to show disinterest in romantic relationships? He didn’t want to be arrogant at all, but as far as he could remember, Konrad Vanderwood had always received love confessions and he, punctually, had always rejected them. All of them, without making any distinctions.

Konrad didn’t see anything interesting in love, preferring to concentrate all his emotions, all his time on music and his friends. He even made fun of the so-called “love at first sight” and loved to tease Armin for his little crush on Annie, the guitarist in his band.

And yet… on the first day of school, when he bumped into Reiner Braun in the hallway to go to his next class, his world opened up and it was never the same ever again. Konrad didn’t understand how it was possible, he had never spoken to Reiner before today (if asking him to sit at the same table counted as a conversation) and yet that feeling remained and, indeed, continued to grow stronger and stronger. Especially now, whenever he brought his eyes to his figure as soon as Konrad was sure Reiner wouldn't notice.

“Reiner… have we met before, maybe in another life?”

Konrad knew how ridiculous that thought was. But it was the only explanation he could give himself for the way his heart had started beating like crazy as soon as his gaze had landed on his golden one.

It was all so ridiculous… that he didn’t want to acknowledge it. He was fine with things as they were now: being able to look at him from afar was enough to satisfy him, it kept Konrad going about his usual daily routine.

Or at least… that’s how it should have been.

Have we met before?

Maybe in another life I knew you

Maybe if I try I’ll see right through you

And I’ll remember who we were

-Anna, be careful!-

Konrad vaguely heard that exclamation, bringing him back to reality. He immediately turned instinctively to see what was happening and just then  noticed that a girl his age with her hair tied in two pigtails had lost her balance, slipping on a wet part of the floor and squeezing too tightly on the cardboard cup, crumpling it. The hot liquid of the tea would have ended up on Konrad, who was already wondering why he would ever find himself involved in someone's bad luck (the good part of being a lucky guy was, in fact, not taking part in galactic embarrassments in public, especially in front of your crush) unable to move or do anything, if it weren't for a back that had gotten in the way.

Reiner Braun had acted immediately, without thinking. He covered Konrad, not caring about the hot liquid that was now sticking to his T-shirt and his  school jersey, and grabbed the girl by the arm before she could fall and hurt herself.

-Oh no, I'm sorry!-. Anna kept repeating, along with her thank yous, after she had recovered. Her friend approached them, asking if they were okay and Reiner tried to reassure them, that he was fine and nothing bad had happened. In the end he managed to send them away and it was then that Konrad came to his senses.

-Are you crazy?!-. Without being able to stop himself from exclaiming, Konrad immediately grabbed some small napkins from the table and stood up, grabbing him by the arm and dragging into the bathroom, closing the door behind.

The place was dirty, but at least it didn't smell bad. Or maybe it was, and Reiner simply hadn't noticed. It could have been, since all his attention was completely focused on the small detail that said bathroom wasn't made for two people and he didn't know what was going through the other’s head, while Konrad stared at Reiner with penetrating, deep, beautiful azure eyes, spaced a few centimeters apart.

Suddenly Reiner forgot about the rest, becoming aware of the closeness of their bodies and no longer knowing what was the right thing to do.

-Lift up your shirt-.

-…Huh?-.

Reiner was taken aback, not understanding what he meant and therefore his thoughts fell to destinations they shouldn't have. “We’re in a public place, we can’t… or maybe we can? But aren’t these things what you do at least after a first date?”

Konrad couldn’t help but smile in amusement at his reaction. Finding him far too adorable, instead of explaining with words, Konrad reached out to turn on the faucet and let the cold water come out, starting to wet the napkins.

-So? What are you waiting for?-.

Only then did Reiner understand and blushed a little from embarrassment.

Damn these hormones, Reiner cursed mentally as he did as he was told. Reiner couldn’t even look him in the eyes now. Without knowing that Konrad was thinking the same, as he tried not to let his eyes fall any lower, focusing on the red part of his chest and starting to dab with the wet napkins.

“My luck is definitely not gone… although I didn’t think much about what it meant for me to bring him here.” Konrad decided to take advantage of it, however. When would he ever end up in a situation like this?

-Why did you do it?-. The question came out of Konrad’s mouth spontaneously, thinking back to how he had been protected before. He hadn’t expected it at all and it still surprised him.

Reiner noticed that the tone wasn’t accusatory at all, but he still didn’t know what to say, since he had acted on instinct as soon as realizing that Konrad could be hit in the face by the hot tea. Reiner still found the way the other was concerned kinda cute.

-It… just happened.- Reiner finally replied, keeping his eyes on the delicate way he dabbed the wet napkins on his chest. He hoped he'd never stop. -Don't worry.-

-Mm? Of course I worry.- Konrad replied, raising a corner of his (inviting for Reiner) lips high. -The quarterback got hurt protecting me. Won’t an angry mob hunt me down, when they find out tomorrow?-.

"Does he know me?" Reiner immediately thought, before calling himself an idiot because he obviously knew him, given the role he had at school that had helped make him popular.

Reiner then tried to reassure the other that it wouldn't happen, but from the way he laughed then Reiner understood that Konrad was really joking. He wanted to hear that laugh one more time.

-Well then, Mr. Hero, I think I should thank you for saving me.-

Reiner blushed once again when he saw how he winked at him, and only then did Reiner take note of how one hand was resting on his hip and the other remained on his chest, separated by those wet and now useless napkins crumpled on those fingers of his.

-How would you like to be repaid?-. The deep sound of his voice only increased the shivers that Reiner was already feeling. -And I won't take no for an answer, so think about it.-

“Is he… flirting with me by any chance?”. Several suggestions passed through his mind, but many of them were not at all appropriate for the place they were currently in. No, he couldn't use them, no matter how much his nether regions were tingling.

To be honest, Reiner didn't expect to end up in this situation with his crush. He thought it was okay to just look at him, but maybe… they weren't as “far apart” as he imagined. Maybe, Konrad too felt the same pleasant and warm feeling that spread from his heart to every part of his body.

(Yes, Konrad felt it too and was equally surprised by his own courage. However, he hadn't been able to resist, despite everything Konrad had done and thought earlier; being satisfied with looking at him from afar, his ass).

And so, plucking up courage, Reiner opened his mouth.

-Come watch next week's game!-. He exclaimed perhaps with too much enthusiasm and vigor, bu just couldn't hold back any longer.

Konrad was surprised. -Just that?-.

Reiner, however, wasn’t finished. With the same rosy cheeks, he continued.

-No… I would also like you to come to the party that will be held after the game.-

For a few seconds the silence aired in that small and narrow bathroom with the flickering light. Konrad's eyes blinked several times, trying to understand exactly what the other had just said.

-The party after the game… you mean the one that Historia always organizes? That party?-.

Reiner nodded, now becoming more and more nervous. -You can come with your friends if you want…-.

At that point Reiner didn't know what he expected, but certainly not to see Konrad bite his lower lip to hold back his laughter, his shoulders trembled at that effort. Reiner didn't know whether to be sad for a possible refusal, or happy for having made him laugh.

-Sorry, sorry…-. Konrad tried to clarify, still trembling. -But I was imagining my friends at that party-.

Before Reiner could say anything, that they would have fun and his friends would have no problem, Konrad continued; he wasn't laughing anymore, but he still had a twinkle in his eyes.

-Let's do this. I'm coming to the game.-

-Really?-.

-But...!-. Konrad's smile became more mischievous and Reiner felt like he had just landed right where he wanted, as if he had him in his grasp. If it were someone else, Reiner probably wouldn't have allowed it... but that someone was Konrad, and so he wanted to see how far he would go.

-But...?-.

Konrad took another step closer, pressing their chests together while never stopping to stare into his eyes; he was a few centimeters shorter, but Reiner found it to be the perfect height to bend his head down and kiss him.

He didn't, though. Even though Reiner really wanted to.

-I'll only come to that party if your team wins. Do we have an agreement?-.

Reiner felt like he couldn't breathe anymore.

-I'll win for sure, Konrad.-

At that point he took a step back and threw the napkins in the trash. He winked at him again. -We'll see, Reiner.-

Then he left the bathroom, leaving him alone, blushing and decidedly excited. Reiner Braun promised himself to show his best possible performance at that game, and before that he would get the highest grade on that damned Eldian literature test.

For his part, Konrad took his things back to put them in his bag: he had a nice inspiration for his next song, but he would write it once he got home. Before leaving, however, he decided to give him his number.

Who was he kidding? Far from just staring at him from afar, Konrad would not stop until that boy was his. He no longer cared about how Armin would tease him back: he could even call him pathetic, as far as Konrad was concerned.

“Hmm?”. A doubt assailed him as he left the bar. “Did I ever tell him my name?”

Oh, well. It doesn’t matter. With almost skipping steps, Konrad whistled the melody of the song he had in mind.

Have we met before?

Maybe in another time I loved you

Maybe you’re the one that I would run to

Don’t know why it’s all a blur

I think I know you

Notes:

Honestly, this should have been a smut. But this is what happens when you let the character write, and so who am I to say something? (these characters have no respect for the author I swear)

Anyways, I'm gonna write that smut oneshot one day, but today isn't that day. For now, I hope you enjoyed this (whatever this oneshot is, haha!)
As soon as I heard that song, this whole scene appeared in my mind and I had to write it!
Really, hope you liked it! Let me know with kudos, bookmarks or comments, if you want!
Stay tuned for more Konrad/Reiner in the future!
