Work Text:
Jinx scrambled into their shared apartment and smiled as she set down groceries. “Ekko! Today at the office. Guess who showed up again? Janice’s boyfriend. Again. Claimed she forgot her lunch, but I swear I saw her eating lunch with Bryce.” Jinx giggled as she put everything away. “She’s so incredibly fucked. Her boy is gonna find out-”
She stopped talking when she noticed that Ekko hadn’t said a word. She abandoned the groceries to circle halfway around the couch and jump onto it. Her knees were under her as she sat facing him. She sat patiently (she should get an award for that) as she waited for Ekko to speak up. The only thing she knew was that something on his phone had upset him. He’s real silly for getting insecure about stuff because of the internet. He started hesitantly.
“Do you think brown eyes are boring? I just keep seeing all these comparisons to blue eyes or green and barely anything about brown-”
“They’re like dirt,” she said bluntly. She grinned at the look he gave her. “It’s a compliment, silly. I mean, think about it. All food comes from somewhere and dirt is the start of it all. It’s a necessary thing for life as a whole. And when you’re happy, I swear I could sell your eyes as topaz.” He laughed at that and it made her smile. “Or in the mornings, when you just wake up, I could drink them like coffee.”
He snort laughed at that. It was such a stupid, Jinx-like comment. It made her stupidly happy. She would have scolded herself for feeling the way she did, except he started talking.
“And yours are like diamonds.”
“You’re bad at this, Bug, this isn’t meant to be cheesy.” She kicked her feet into his lap and sat back.
“I think everything you just said was cheesy. Fine, though. Hm. They’re just like you. Calm, but bold. Warm, but cold. Chaos and contradictions. Like waves at the beach. You swim too far in and you may never come back up for air. Able to drown without a second thought while also providing life to everything around you.”
“There ya go, wonder boy!” She threw her arms up and leaned back. “I still think you could do better.” The challenge in her voice wasn’t something Ekko could just pass up.
“What? You want me to say that they feel as comfortable as home on a stormy day even when you’re mad? Or that I would gladly drown if it meant I got another minute with you? What about how they’re the color of wolfsbane? I would knowingly and willingly consume your eyes if wolfsbane is what caused their color.” He leaned in close to her with a grin to match hers. He gave her a gentle kiss on her nose before sitting upright again.
She cackled and clapped. She sat upright again so that she could lean in close to his face. “What if they were… I dunno. Pink?”
He just shook his head and stood up. He walked into the kitchen, not without stopping to pat her on the head. He pulled out a box of pasta and some sauce ingredients.
“I’ll make pasta tonight.”
She huffed and turned around to turn their show on. He may not be able to see it, but he just knew that she was smiling.
