Work Text:
Yu couldn't say that music had ever been a big part of his life. It had always been a bit of a background thing, he had never paid too much attention to it. When he was growing up he would only hear what his parents would listen to, if they ever did put on anything, and their tastes were restricted to more classical things. More often than not though, the noises of the city were the only background noise Yu had in his old home. This changed when he moved to Inaba.
Befriending Yosuke had really kick-started the whole music discovery thing for Yu. He couldn’t think of a single moment where he had seen Yosuke without his headphones around his neck, and whenever he had downtime Yu could often find him wearing the headphones and bobbing his head to whatever was playing through them. It made Yu curious, seeing music seem to be so integral in Yosuke’s life.
“What are you listening to?” Yu finally voiced his thoughts one afternoon. He and Yosuke had been sitting together on the roof enjoying a lunch Yu had prepared the night before together. Yosuke had been bobbing his head like he normally did while he ate, a smile plastered across his face as he enjoyed the homemade food. Yu had been staring when his curiosity got the better of him.
Yosuke had turned to look at Yu, his mouth still full from his last bite. Wordlessly, he took his headphones off and leaned closer to Yu, placing the headphones on his head. Yu felt his heart stutter at the proximity, he tried to ignore it. Their eyes remained locked as some upbeat song droned on in his ears. Yu didn’t recognize it, only knowing a few songs that played on the radio that Nanako would turn on during breakfast. He focused on the music, he could tell it was a whole different style from what he usually heard on the radio.
“You like rock?” Yu heard Yosuke’s muffled voice ask from outside the headphones. He slid them off his head and shrugged.
“I don’t listen to a lot of music.” He stated. Yu wasn’t really sure what kind of music he liked, he didn’t mind what Yosuke had been listening to, but it was a similar feeling he had to his parents music.
“Don’t you worry partner, I’ll make a music pro out of you before summer.” Yosuke promised with an easy chuckle. He threw his arm over Yu’s shoulder, pulling him close, and Yu thought he would agree to anything Yosuke suggested as long as he kept smiling like that.

A week came and went, and Yu had forgotten all about the promise Yosuke made. He was packing his bag at the end of class, absently thinking of which job he would work after he left school, when Yosuke came up to him and caught his attention.
“You have a cd player right?” Yosuke asked as he rifled around in his bag. Yu tilted his head as he watched.
“I do, why?”
Yu’s question was answered when Yosuke pulled out a clear CD case and handed it to him. He had a proud smile on his face as Yu inspected the case, taking note of the words scrawled in sharpie on one side of the case. After reading a few words, Yu realized they were song titles and bands. The moment on the rooftop entered his mind again.
“I put a bit of everything on there, so give it a listen and tell me which ones you like. I can make you a proper mix once I know the genre you’re into” Yosuke explained, closing his bag and slinging it back onto his back. Before Yu had a chance to respond the sound of Yosuke’s ringtone begun to sound. He fished it out of his pocket and looked at the caller ID with a grimace. “Ahh crap, it’s work. I gotta run, but let me know what you think tomorrow!”
Yosuke was rushing out the classroom before Yu could get another word in, he simply sat shocked in his chair. He looked back down to the tracklist on the CD, a warm feeling blooming in his chest. It was a small thing, but it was so nice to be thought about. Yosuke had made this for him, to introduce him to more music, just because he wanted to.
Yu smiled his entire walk home.
