“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!” Niall’s voice practically bounced off the garage walls as he burst through the door, the excitement practically radiating off him.
Harry and Liam were lounging at the makeshift gaming table, their dice scattered across the surface, but Niall had news. Big news.
"Guys, guys, you will not believe what I just did," he nearly shouted, grinning ear to ear as he rushed to sit down, practically vibrating in his chair.
“What’s got you so worked up this time?” Liam, ever the calm one, glanced up with a raised brow, his curiosity piqued.
“I invited a new player!” Niall grinned, tapping the side of his head dramatically. “Shawn, you know Shawn! The guy who’s always wearing his oversized hoodie and thinking he’s cooler than everyone else?”
“Wait, you mean Shawn, the guy who plays football?” Liam blinked, his eyebrows furrowing slightly.
“Yep, that Shawn!” Niall nodded enthusiastically. “The one and only! And guess what? I convinced him to join us! He’s gonna play Dungeons and Dragons with us tonight.”
Harry, on the other hand, was far less enthused.
“You invited a football player to our Dungeons and Dragons game, Niall?” He shot Niall a look, his face scrunching up as he crossed his arms, trying to act cool but failing miserably.
“He is not like the rest of the team, Harry! He never bullied us.” Niall pouted, clearly disappointed by Harry's reaction.
“Doesn’t matter. Football players are football players.” Harry’s face darkened, and he let out a frustrated sigh.” He will never take this seriously. He will laugh at us. Are you sure this is not a prank?”
Liam, ever the mediator, just raised a hand, clearly trying to make sense of it all.
“I don’t see the harm in giving it a shot. If he likes it, great. If not, he can go back to whatever he was doing.” He paused, then looked at Niall with a smile. “Besides, it’s gonna be fun to see how he handles the whole role-playing thing.”
“Please, please, please , can we give it a shot?” Niall bounced in his seat, completely unfazed by Harry’s annoyance. “I need to talk to Shawn about something outside school. It's important.”
Harry leaned against the garage wall, arms crossed, surveying the room. Shelves overflowed with dice sets, figurines, and dog-eared rulebooks. Posters of fantasy worlds and sci-fi epics covered the walls, and the table in the center was already covered in scattered character sheets and loose dice. It was a mess… comfortable, lived-in. Theirs.
“This place…” Harry muttered “It’s got ‘nerd sanctuary’ written all over it.”
“And yet, here you are. Again. Almost like you love it.” Niall smirked, kicking back in his chair.
“I do love it.” Harry scoffed. “Which is exactly why I don’t want some asshole coming in here and ruining it.”
“Do you think Shawn would do that?” Liam frowned, glancing up from his character sheet.
Harry exhaled, pushing off the wall and pacing a little.
“I know he’s not like the rest of them, but he’s still on the team. And those guys… ” his jaw tightened, “...they already treat me like shit. Last thing I need is one of them in here, laughing at us, at all this.”
“This is ours. It’s the one place where they don’t get to make the rules.” He gestured around the garage, at the world they’d built together.
“I get it, mate.” Niall’s teasing expression softened, and he nodded. “But I wouldn’t invite someone if I thought they’d be a dick about it. Shawn’s chill, I promise.”
Harry still looked unconvinced, but Liam clapped a hand on his shoulder.
“If he does say anything, we’ll kick him out. Simple.”
“Yeah. Alright.” Harry huffed but finally sat down, rolling a stray dice between his fingers. “But if he so much as breathes wrong about this place, I’m hexing his ass in-game.”
“Now that’s the spirit.” Niall grinned.
Niall, ever the playful troublemaker, caught a glimpse of the photo on the wall, a picture Harry’s friend had taken of him a while back, back when Harry still had that goofy, shy smile that always made Niall’s heart do funny things. And in that photo, Harry was wearing a T-shirt that read, Harry <3 Louis.
Niall grinned mischievously, his voice dripping with excitement.
“Hey, you know what we should do?” he asked, the playful glint in his eyes impossible to miss. “We should totally show that picture. The one with your T-shirt. I mean, maybe Shawn could show Louis, right?”
Harry’s face went bright red, his hands instinctively tugging at his sleeves as if to cover up the embarrassing memory.
“Niall, I swear to God if you even think about it…”
“It might be fun to see Louis’s reaction.” Liam teased Harry.
“Yeah, yeah, you would say that,” Harry muttered, slumping down in his chair. He could already feel the heat rising in his face, knowing exactly what Louis would say if he ever saw that picture.
“Come on, you know you want to. Just a little bit of fun, Harry. Live a little!” Niall, unable to contain his excitement, leaned in closer, his grin practically reaching his ears.
Harry glared at him, his face a mix of frustration and embarrassment, but part of him knew he’d never be able to resist Niall’s relentless enthusiasm.
“I hate you,” he said, trying his best to hide the smile threatening to break through.
“You love me, Curly.” Niall just smirked.
Liam watched the back-and-forth between Niall and Harry with quiet amusement. It was kind of fun to see how quickly Harry could get flustered.
“Alright, alright,” Liam said, his tone much calmer than the others. “We’ll give it a go. We’ve got nothing to lose, right?”
“You’re not helping, Liam.” Harry gave him an incredulous look, his voice still a little harsh.
“Hey, worst case scenario, we’ll all get an embarrassing story out of it. And those are always good for future blackmail material.” Liam only shrugged with a smirk, clearly content with just letting Niall’s excitement take the wheel.
Harry groaned again, burying his face in his hands as Niall hopped up to grab the rest of the game pieces, still excited for the chaos that was about to unfold.
“This is going to be a disaster,” Harry muttered, but deep down, he knew it would be one hell of a ride.

Louis leaned back in his chair, legs stretched out lazily, as he casually glanced at Shawn and Zayn, who were both sprawled on the couch in the living room. He couldn’t help but smirk as he watched Shawn fidget with his phone, obviously trying to hold in whatever news he had.
“So, what’s going on, Shawn? You look like you’re about to explode.” Louis asked casually.
Shawn’s eyes lit up as he looked up from his phone, the smile on his face wide and unapologetically bright.
“Okay, so here’s the thing. Niall invited me to play Dungeons and Dragons with him tonight. And I’m going.” His words tumbled out quickly, clearly proud of himself for accepting the invite.
“Wait, what? You’re going to play that nerdy game with him? Really?” Zayn raised an eyebrow, his tone casual but laced with mockery.
“Oh, hell no . ” Louis smirked, taking a sip of his drink before leaning forward with a teasing glint in his eyes. “I’m not going anywhere near that table. No way I’m playing with a bunch of nerds in their little fantasy world.”
“Come on, it’ll be fun! I’ve never done it before, but Niall says it’s awesome, and I’m so curious. Plus, it’s gonna be hilarious . ” Shawn’s face lit up even more, the excitement bubbling over as he spoke.
“I’m all for a good laugh, but I’m not about to waste my night sitting around rolling dice and pretending to be someone else. It’s not my thing.” Zayn rolled his eyes, clearly unimpressed.
“Not surprised. But you’re forgetting one thing, Zayn.” Louis laughed softly, eyes glinting with mischief.
“Oh? What’s that?” Zayn gave him a questioning look, raising a brow in challenge.
Shawn, eager to get them onboard, leaned forward with a devilish grin.
“Liam’s going to be there too.”
Zayn froze, his usually nonchalant expression shifting as his gaze flicked between Louis and Shawn.
“Liam?” His voice was slightly more interested now, a noticeable shift in his attitude.
Louis noticed the change immediately and couldn’t resist leaning in with a sly grin.
“Oh, look at you. One mention of Liam, and suddenly you’re all in?” He chuckled, the teasing tone making Zayn roll his eyes.
“Well,” Zayn shrugged, his cool facade returning, “I never said I wasn’t interested. I mean, if Liam’s there, it might be worth my time.”
“Typical. Can’t resist those puppy eyes, can you?” He winked at Zayn, teasing him just a little more.
“You’re unbelievable.” Zayn narrowed his eyes, giving Louis a small, amused smile.
Shawn giggled at the exchange.
“So, are we all going then?” he asked excited.
Louis sighed dramatically, rolling his eyes.
“Fine, I’ll go. But if I get sucked into any kind of bullshit fantasy world because you couldn’t keep it in your pants, Zayn...” He let the threat hang in the air, his voice dripping with playful venom. “I’ll kill you.”
“You won’t do anything, Louis. You’re too nice.” Zayn chuckled darkly, uncaring about Louis's exaggerated threats.
Louis raised a brow and flashed an exaggerated grin.
“You just wait.” He gave Zayn a pointed look. “You just better hope Niall doesn’t start pulling out all that... nerd shit while we’re there. I’m not taking any responsibility for what happens if I lose my patience.”
“Alright, we’re all going then! It’s going to be a blast. Trust me, guys.” Shawn, unbothered by the banter, stood up and grabbed his jacket.
“Yeah, yeah. Let’s go hang out with the nerds, and let’s just pray I don’t kill anyone by the end of the night.” Louis let out a deep breath, looking at Zayn with a resigned yet teasing look.
“We’ll see. It’s bound to be a good time.” Zayn smirked, eyes gleaming with amusement.
Shawn couldn’t help but smile at the back-and-forth between Louis and Zayn. He hadn’t been sure if they would actually agree to join him, but Louis’s sassiness was something he enjoyed, and he was relieved to see Zayn warming up to the idea.
Niall was going to be so excited when he found out they were coming. He could already imagine the chaotic fun the night would bring. The Dungeons and Dragons game was going to be something different, and the fact that Louis and Zayn were going to be part of it made it even better. He could already picture the teasing, the laughter, and maybe a little bit of unexpected bonding.
“Alright, let’s go. It’s going to be so much fun, I swear,” Shawn said with a smile, his voice light and excited.
“Yeah, yeah. Fun…” Louis’s voice cut through the air as he pulled on his jacket, throwing an exaggerated wink at Zayn. “Just don’t expect me to turn into some damn elf or wizard or whatever the hell we’re supposed to be in this game.”
Shawn chuckled, shaking his head, glad that he’d convinced them to come. It wasn’t every day that he got to drag the cool kids into his secret little nerdy world, but tonight was going to be special.
***
The garage door creaked open, and Harry, Liam, and Niall all turned to see Shawn stroll in. Not alone. Louis and Zayn followed close behind, looking around like they had just stepped into another dimension.
Harry stiffened immediately, his fingers tightening around a dice. He threw a quick look at Niall, who looked just as surprised as he felt, but way too excited to be mad.
“Hope you don’t mind, but I brought some reinforcements,” Shawn said with a grin.
Niall, to no one’s surprise, beamed.
“More the merrier!” His eyes flickered to Louis and Zayn. “Didn’t think you two were the D&D type.”
Louis scoffed, striding in with the confidence of someone who had already decided they were too cool for this.
“I’m not. But Shawn was all persuasive and charming, and Zayn here loves a good excuse to be dramatic.” He smirked. “Figured I’d come to supervise the nerd activities.”
“Dramatic?” Zayn echoed, looking vaguely offended before shrugging. His gaze flickered to Liam, and a slow, lazy grin stretched across his face. “Maybe I just wanted to see what kind of character you’d play, Liam.”
Liam, who had been silently observing up until this point, suddenly sat up a little straighter.
“Uh…what?”
“You strike me as the noble warrior type. All honor and duty. I wonder if there’s a little chaos in you.” Zayn's voice was smooth, teasing, and Liam was suddenly struggling to find words.
Niall snorted, watching Liam visibly malfunction under Zayn’s attention.
“Honestly, I’m just glad you’re okay with me bringing them. I didn’t want to, like… mess up the vibe.” Shawn had turned back to Niall, eyes warm.
Niall shook his head, his grin turning a little softer.
“Are you kidding? This is gonna be great. Plus, now I have an excuse to show off my dungeon master skills.” He nudged Shawn playfully, and Shawn chuckled, nudging him right back.
Harry, still reeling from the unexpected additions, leaned in toward Niall as the others got settled.
“Why is Louis here?” His voice was low, slightly panicked.
“I dunno. He just showed up with Shawn.” Niall glanced at him, blinking.
“And you didn’t think to ask?” Harry narrowed his eyes.
“Didn’t have time. Also, it’s funnier this way.” Niall shrugged, smirking.
“Niall, he’s going to ruin everything.” Harry groaned, rubbing his temples.
“Or,” Niall countered, grinning, “he’s going to make it ten times more entertaining.”
Harry sighed, glancing over at Louis, who was currently examining a set of dice like they personally offended him.
“I really doubt that”
***
Niall clapped his hands, his enthusiasm practically radiating off of him as he stood in front of the group, ready to kick off their first Dungeons & Dragons session. His eyes sparkled as he held up a d20 like it was the Holy Grail of fun.
"Alright, folks, welcome to the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons," Niall announced with a wide grin. "It’s like acting, but with dice and less chance of embarrassment, unless you’re Louis, of course."
Louis, already lounging in his chair with his arms crossed, raised an eyebrow and shot Niall a look of mock offense.
"Go on, Niall," he said with a smirk. "Tell me how you’re going to make this fun for someone who already knows they’re fabulous."
"So, you’ll create a character.” Niall didn’t even flinch, continuing on as if Louis hadn’t spoken. “Pick a class, like a wizard, rogue, or barbarian. Each has strengths and weaknesses. You’ll roll a d20, the big dice, to decide outcomes. Higher rolls are better. Simple, right?"
"And what if we roll low?" Shawn, who had been quietly taking it all in, raised his hand with a questioning look.
"Bad things happen," Niall replied, his expression serious. " Like, your rogue might set off a trap because they tripped over their own ego."
"Or the Dungeon Master gets salty because I don’t follow his boring plans?" Louis grinned, clearly amused.
"Exactly. Moving on." Niall sighed dramatically, eyes narrowing with an exaggerated deadpan look.
As Niall launched into a more detailed explanation, Shawn leaned closer, his eyes fixed on Niall with something that could only be described as admiration, borderline heart eyes. Harry, who was quietly sitting at the table, didn’t miss it, though he doubted anyone else had noticed. Shawn nodded at every word Niall said.
Meanwhile, across the table, Zayn was lounging in his seat, his gaze flickering over to Liam. Who was trying to focus on Niall’s instructions, but every time Zayn smirked or murmured something under his breath, Liam’s ears went a little pink.
"Alright," Niall continued, flipping through his notes. "Now, since it’s our first game, we’re gonna start with a simple encounter to get the hang of things."
"Just tell me where to stab things." Louis stretched with a smirk.
Harry, who had been silent up until now, swallowed and glanced up at Louis. He was still a bit unsure about all of this, feeling out of place among such confident personalities. But Louis’ energy was infectious.
"You, um, you might want to think about strategy, too.” Harry hesitated “Rogues are great at sneaking, not just stabbing."
"Oh? And what’s your class, Curly?" Louis turned his attention to Harry.
"Paladin." Harry ducked his head slightly.
"So, you’re the one keeping us all alive. Good to know. Guess I should stay on your good side." Louis whistled.
"It wouldn’t hurt." Harry’s face went a little red, but he gave a small, shy smile.
"Look at that, Harry makes jokes!" Louis teased, nudging him playfully. "What else are you hiding, huh? Some secret battle plans? A hidden agenda? A crush on me?"
"W-what? No! I just… " Harry choked on air, his entire face burning.
Louis laughed, clearly enjoying the reaction
"See? This is what makes the game fun." Zayn said leaning closer to Liam.
"You just like watching people squirm." Liam shook his head, still a bit flustered by Zayn’s proximity.
"Only when it’s entertaining." Zayn smirked, his voice lower.
Liam coughed, trying to focus back on Niall, who was now rolling his eyes at the chaos.
"Can we get back to the game before Louis and Zayn turn this into a flirting competition?"
"Oh, I’d win," Louis said easily, flashing a grin at Harry, who had yet to recover from the previous teasing.
"This is going to be a long campaign." Niall groaned.
***
The dim glow of fairy lights strung across the garage cast a warm hue over the table, cluttered with dice, rulebooks, and hastily scribbled character sheets. It was another game night, and if the last few sessions had been any indication, it was going to be complete chaos.
Niall was already setting up behind his screen, rolling dice and muttering to himself like the true Dungeon Master he was.
"Alright, folks. Tonight, we continue your misadventures. Let's try not to get arrested again, yeah?"
"We didn't get arrested, we got temporarily inconvenienced." Louis, sprawled dramatically in his chair, stretched his arms behind his head.
"You set a tavern on fire."
"Could've happened to anyone." Louis shrugged.
Harry, who had been quietly organizing his dice, sighed.
"You did it on purpose, Louis. You literally said, “I wonder what happens if I throw this torch at the bar."
"Still worth it, though." Louis shot him a wink.
Across the table, Shawn was watching Niall with a soft smile, clearly more focused on him than the game.
"So, Niall, tell me more about how this works. I want to make sure I… really understand."
"You’re not trying to learn, mate, you’re just trying to get him to keep talking." Zayn, lounging beside Liam, smirked knowingly.
Shawn had the decency to look slightly embarrassed.
"Well, since you asked…" Niall launched into another explanation of action economy while Shawn listened with an expression that could only be described as enamored.
Liam rolled his eyes and turned to Zayn, who was idly spinning a d20 between his fingers.
"And what about you? Are you paying attention to the game?"
"Oh, I can multitask, love.” Zayn tilted his head slightly, his dark eyes glinting with mischief. “Play the game and flirt with you at the same time.”
While Liam was busy being slightly flustered, Niall finally called for everyone’s attention.
"Alright, so you all find yourselves in a dense forest. The path ahead splits in two, one side looks dark and ominous, the other bright and inviting. What do you do?"
"We take the dark and ominous one," Louis said immediately.
"Why?” Harry shot him an exasperated look.
"Because it’s the more fun option, obviously."
"Or," Harry countered, "it’s the one that gets us all killed."
"What’s wrong, Curly? Are you afraid of a little danger?" Louis grinned, leaning closer to Harry with an infuriatingly charming smirk.
Harry’s fingers twitched on his dice, refusing to look at Louis. He had learned that engaging only encouraged him.
"We should at least investigate before blindly walking in."
"Sounds boring," Louis teased. "Sounds like something an uptight paladin would say."
"I am a paladin."
"Exactly." Louis grinned wider.
"Fine, roll perception, Louis. Let’s see if your chaotic instincts get us anywhere." Niall sighed.
Louis rolled his dice with a flourish. It bounced across the table before stopping in a less-than-ideal position.
"That’s a two.’’ Niall squinted at it. “You notice absolutely nothing. In fact, you are now overly confident that the path is perfectly safe."
"Brilliant! I charge forward." Louis clapped his hands.
"Louis…"
"Too late! I’m already running!"
Harry dropped his head into his hands while Liam sighed and muttered something about this being a disaster.
"Louis, the moment you step onto the path, the ground beneath you gives way.” Niall, rubbing his temples, continued. “You are now hanging over a pit filled with spikes. Congratulations."
"A trap? For me? I’m flattered." Louis gasped, entirely too delighted.
"You could have just listened." Harry groaned.
"But where’s the fun in that? Besides, I know you’ll save me, Curly. You always do." Louis shot him a wink.
Harry’s ears burned as he focused very intently on his character sheet.
"Anyone want to help him?" Niall sighed.
"I’ll try to pull him up." Harry finally sighed and picked up his dice.
"Knew you loved me." Louis grinned.
Harry rolled his dice, ignoring the way Louis’ words made his heart stutter. He was just playing the game. Just playing the game.
***
The clatter of dice echoed through the room as the group settled in for another night of playing.
Niall was setting up behind his DM screen, his fingers brushing against Shawn’s as they reached for the same set of dice. Their eyes met, and for a brief second, they just… looked at each other. Shawn coughed, cheeks flushing, but he didn’t move his hand away. Neither did Niall.
Liam was adjusting his character sheet, obviously to the Shiall exchange by his side, but he wasn’t oblivious to the way Zayn was watching him, dark eyes, intense and hungry, like Liam was a particularly enticing challenge.
“Alright, let’s get this started,” Niall said, clapping his hands together. His voice wavered slightly, and Shawn grinned, amused.
Louis stretched back in his chair, one boot propped up on the table, fingers spinning a d20 idly.
“So, what kind of trouble are we getting into tonight?” he drawled, eyes flicking toward Harry, like he was already planning to drag him into chaos.
“Can we just play the game without you making it your personal mission to drive me insane?” Harry, sitting beside him, sighed.
“Me? I would never.” Louis gasped, hand on his chest. Niall rolled his eyes.
“Alright, you’re all deep in the dungeon. There’s a battle raging ahead, and you need to make a plan.”
“Why plan,” Louis mused, “when we can just wing it?”
“Because that’s how you die?” Harry turned to him, unimpressed.
“And yet, here I am, still standing.” Louis smirked.
“Not for long if you keep this up,” Niall muttered. “Alright, roll for initiative.”
The battle was chaotic.
Shawn, ever the noble cleric, raised his sword high.
“I smite the enemy!” he declared. The d20 tumbled across the table. Natural 1. The table collectively groaned as Niall winced.
“You swing your sword with all your might… but it slips from your hands and flies across the battlefield, hitting Harry in the back for five damage.”
“Really, Shawn?” Harry groaned.
“Sorry, mate!” Shawn looked sheepish.
“If you survive this, I owe you a drink for putting up with us.” Louis, cackling, clapped Harry on the back.
“Just one drink?” Harry shot him a side glance.
Louis’ smirk faltered for half a second. He was expecting another sigh, another exasperated remark. Instead, there was a glint in Harry’s eyes, subtle, but there.
“Alright, Curly, you drive a hard bargain. Two drinks.” Louis leaned closer, intrigued.
“Three,” Harry countered, rolling his dice. “And I’m adding my dexterity bonus.”
Louis blinked. Since when did Harry negotiate?
“Deal,” Louis said, a slow grin stretching across his face.
Zayn had been quiet most of the game, but his gaze never left Liam. When it was Liam’s turn, Zayn leaned in, voice smooth as silk.
“You should cast that fire spell, love. I quite like watching you set things ablaze.”
“Oh? And what else would you like watching me do?” Liam’s fingers twitched on his dice.
“Wouldn’t you like to know.” A slow smirk curled on Zayn’s lips.
“Get a room, you two.” Louis groaned.
“Or at least wait until after the session.” Niall sighed.
Liam, unbothered, rolled his dice with ease.
“Natural 20.” He turned to Zayn, smug. “Looks like I set things on fire after all.”
“You have no idea.” Zayn’s grin was practically sinful.
The battle raged on. Harry, fully focused, started directing the group with ease.
“Louis, move to the flank. You’ll get sneak attack damage.”
Louis, usually one to ignore strategy, actually listened.
“Look at you, Curly. Didn’t know you had it in you.”
“Someone has to keep you alive.” Harry shrugged, already rolling his die.
His tone was calm, confident. Unshaken. Louis hesitated for half a second, watching the way Harry moved, so sure of himself. That was new. And he liked it. A lot.
By the time they reached the treasure room, Louis was riding the high of their victory.
“The treasure chest sits in the center,” Niall narrated. “It looks… suspiciously unguarded.”
“I’ll open it.”Louis cracked his knuckles.
“Roll perception first.” Niall sighed.
“Nah,” Louis grinned. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
“Death. Death is the worst that could happen.” Harry leaned in, deadpan.
Louis waved a dismissive hand and opened the chest. A dart shot out, hitting him square in the neck.
“You take 15 points of poison damage.” Niall smirked.
“My bad. But hey, at least I look good while dying.” Louis clutched his chest dramatically.
“You’re lucky I’m here.” Harry sighed, already preparing a healing spell.
“What would I do without you, Curly?” Louis winked.
Harry, this time, didn’t even blush. He just looked at Louis, steady and sure, and said.
“Probably die a lot faster.”
Louis blinked. Huh. Maybe Curly wasn’t so shy after all.
***
The table was alive with energy, the room filled with laughter and the sound of dice clattering across the surface. Shawn and Niall were sitting just a little too close, their heads nearly touching as they whispered strategies to each other, their eyes lingering in ways that spoke louder than any words. Zayn and Liam, on the other hand, were completely lost in their own little world, touching under the table and exchanging flirty smirks between rolls.
“The group stands before an intricate magical puzzle,” Niall narrated as Dungeon Master. Liam furrows his brows, deep in thought.
“I cast bardic inspiration to help Liam solve the riddle.” Zayn leaned in, his voice low and smooth.
“Okay, describe how you inspire him.” Niall nodded.
Zayn smirked, leaning closer to Liam’s ear.
“You’re the smartest wizard I’ve ever seen. You’ve got this.”
Liam blinked rapidly, shifting in his seat as he rolled the dice. Nat 20.
“Uh, thanks, Zayn. I guess it worked.” He cleared his throat.
“See? I’m not just a pretty face.” Zayn grinned.
Laughter erupted around the table, but Louis’ focus had shifted. He stretched his legs out under the table, nudging Harry’s ankle with his foot.
“You’re awfully quiet tonight, Curly.”
“Just thinking.” Harry looked up, already blushing as he met Louis’ gaze.
“Careful, thinking too much around me can be dangerous. I have a reputation for turning deep thoughts into very questionable decisions.” Louis smirked, resting his chin on his palm as he studied Harry.
“Noted.” Harry laughed softly.
They played on, Louis making an exaggerated show of leaning closer to Harry every time he spoke, just to see that blush deepen. Harry, to Louis’ delight, started playing back, biting his lip, throwing in a few teasing remarks of his own. Louis had to admit, he was enchanted by the way Harry’s confidence flickered in and out, like a flame not quite ready to burn bright but desperate to catch.
During a break, when the others were grabbing snacks, Harry and Louis remained at the table.
“Alright, spill. What’s been on your mind?” Louis took a sip of his drink and tilted his head at Harry.
“It’s nothing, really.” Harry hesitated, his fingers tracing patterns on the wooden surface of the table.
“Come on, I’m excellent at keeping secrets.” Louis raised a brow.
Harry exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck.
“It’s just… I wanted to ask you if you knew your football friends…. They…” He hesitated before looking up. “They give me a hard time sometimes.”
“What do you mean?” Louis frowned, the casual playfulness in his expression vanishing instantly.
“Nothing major. Just… they think it’s funny to mess with me, I guess.” Harry shrugged, clearly uncomfortable.
Louis stared at him, horror creeping into his face.
“You mean they bully you?”
Harry’s silence was enough of an answer.
“Are you serious? Why didn’t you tell me?” Louis sat up straighter, his jaw tightening.
“It’s not like you could do anything.” Harry looked away, a little embarrassed.
“Like hell I can’t.” Louis scoffed. “They’re my teammates, and if they think they can mess with you and get away with it, they’ve got another thing coming.”
Harry blinked, taken aback by the vehemence in Louis’ voice.
“You don’t have to…”
“No, but I want to.” Louis cut him off with a shake of his head. “You think I’m just gonna sit here and let them treat you like that? Not a chance, love.”
Harry’s stomach did a weird little flip at the nickname, warmth spreading through his chest. He ducked his head, a smile tugging at his lips.
“Thanks, Lou.”
Louis, watching him closely, let out a slow exhale and smiled.
“God, you’re adorable.”
“Shut up.” Harry groaned, covering his face with his hands.
“Never. But seriously, I’m making this right. You deserve better.” Louis chuckled, nudging him under the table again.
Harry bit his lip, trying and failing to fight back the sheer happiness blooming in his chest. And Louis, well, Louis was absolutely enchanted by the way Harry lit up just from being cared about.
The game resumed, but Louis kept stealing glances at Harry, his mind already made up. No one was going to mess with Harry anymore, not while Louis was around.
***
The garage was filled with the usual chaos as the group settled around the large table. There was laughter, trash talk, and the occasional groan of frustration. The night had started casually, but the intensity of the game was picking up, and soon enough, the potions and dice rolls took a turn toward the absurd.
Zayn was eyeing a mysterious bottle sitting untouched on the corner of the table. It had been there for ages, some experimental concoction Niall had come across in a quirky store, but no one had dared to try it... until now. Zayn reached for it with a mischievous grin.
"Are you sure about this?" Niall asked, raising an eyebrow as he poured over the game notes, not looking up from his sheet.
"Why not?" Zayn shrugged, popping the cork and taking a swig, his eyes never leaving the bottle.
Niall grinned, his gaze flicking up to Zayn.
"Roll to determine what it does," he said with a laugh.
Zayn shook the dice in his hand before letting them fly across the table. They clattered around, coming to a stop on a 12.
"Well, well... you’ve just consumed a love potion, my friend. Congratulations, you’re now infatuated with the next person you see." Niall burst into laughter.
Zayn blinked, a slow smirk forming on his lips as he turned to look at Liam, who had been busy arranging his papers. Their eyes met, and Zayn’s grin widened.
"Well, well, Liam," Zayn said, voice low and teasing. "Looks like fate has spoken."
"Niall, fix this," Liam stammered.
Louis, doubled over with laughter, wiped tears from his eyes, leaning against the table.
"Nope, let’s see where this goes." Niall’s voice was practically a squeal as he laughed, clutching his stomach.
Liam groaned, running a hand down his face.
"Don’t you dare," he muttered, clearly flustered.
Before anyone could add to his suffering, Zayn stood abruptly, grabbing Liam by the wrist and pulling him toward the door.
“Come on, let’s get some air.”
Liam sputtered, caught off guard, but didn’t resist as Zayn dragged him out of the garage. The door shut behind them, leaving the group momentarily stunned.
“Where are they going?” Niall blinked.
Harry smirked as he leaned back in his chair.
“I’d bet they’re in the hallway making out.” His voice was dry, laced with amusement.
Louis turned to him, eyes twinkling with mischief.
“Should we interrupt them?” he asked, leaning forward with a wicked grin.
“Nah, let them have their little romantic side quest. It’s the only action Liam’s getting tonight.” Niall waved a hand dismissively.
Louis let out a bark of laughter, clapping Niall on the back.
The sounds of Zayn and Liam’s muffled voices drifted back into the garage as the group resumed their game. The energy had changed. It was more relaxed now, more playful. It was as if the game was no longer the main event.
Harry’s eyes flicked to Louis, who was still chuckling, and for a moment, their gazes locked.
Louis grinned wider, feeling his chest tighten, but he didn’t look away. There was something magnetic about Harry tonight. The way his hair fell messily over his forehead, the way his dimples showed with every laugh. Louis couldn't help but be drawn in.
Harry caught Louis’ stare, and his cheeks flushed lightly.
"What?" he asked, but his voice was teasing, almost daring Louis to say something.
Louis blinked, realizing he'd been caught staring.
"You’ve got a nice smile, you know," he said offhandedly. "Should show it more often."
Harry’s eyes widened, and he quickly turned away, his face turning pinker.
"Uh… thanks?" His voice came out softer than usual.
Louis merely shrugged, as if it was nothing, but in the back of his mind, that smile lingered. He couldn’t stop thinking about how different Harry looked when he was genuinely happy, unguarded. It made Louis’ heart flutter in a way he couldn’t explain.
The game continued, but now it had a different rhythm. Louis, ever the chaotic force, was still full of his usual teasing and sassy remarks.
He was messing with everyone, rolling bad dice and laughing at their misfortune. But this time, Harry didn’t just let it slide, he teased back, his eyes gleaming with that quiet confidence that made Louis feel both annoyed and utterly smitten.
"Guess I’m carrying the team as usual," Louis said dramatically, leaning back in his chair, but his voice was thick with mock exhaustion.
"Yeah, carrying us straight into traps." Harry grinned, dimples showing.
The group erupted into laughter, but Louis turned to Harry, his eyes widening in exaggerated offense.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me." Harry said, eyes glinting with mischief.
"Looks like the quiet one’s got some bite." Louis could only shake his head, laughing.
The words hung in the air, and Louis felt something shift. Harry wasn’t just the shy, quiet guy anymore. He was teasing back, and Louis... Well, he couldn’t stop staring at him. There was something about this new side of Harry, something that made Louis’ heart skip a beat.
Meanwhile, in the hallway, Zayn and Liam were locked in an entirely different game, their hands tangled together as they kissed like they’d been starved for each other’s touch. Their bodies pressed together against the wall, the world outside of the garage disappearing completely. Zayn’s hands slid into Liam’s hair, pulling him closer, and Liam melted against him, all of his earlier protests forgotten.
"We should get back," Liam said, breathless, but Zayn just pulled him in for another kiss.
"Let them wonder," Zayn murmured against his lips. "I’m not ready for this to end."
Back inside, Niall and Shawn exchanged a quick glance before stealing a soft kiss when the group was momentarily distracted. It was light, sweet, just a peck on the lips, but it felt like everything was changing, like the night was full of possibilities.
Louis and Harry, oblivious to it all, were lost in their own little bubble, their eyes meeting again. This time, Louis didn’t look away. He just smiled, softer now, more genuine. He liked this. He liked Harry, maybe more than he cared to admit.
"Looks like you’re starting to like this game," Louis said with a teasing grin, nudging Harry lightly with his shoulder.
"Yeah, well... someone has to keep you in check." Harry smiled, the warmth of it reaching all the way to his eyes.
Louis chuckled, feeling his heartbeat a little faster.
***
The night had fallen into its usual rhythm, Niall and Shawn sharing soft smiles and gentle touches between their turns, Liam and Zayn too busy exchanging heated glances to focus on their rolls, and Louis being his usual chaotic self.
“So, what’s it gonna be this time, Lou?” Niall teased, his hand resting on Shawn’s thigh as they both leaned in to watch the action unfold. There was a sweetness in the way Niall would glance at Shawn, eyes full of affection as if everything they’d been through had only brought them closer.
“I’m gonna set the tavern on fire,” Louis declared with mock seriousness, making the group groan in protest.
“No! Not again!” Liam whined.
“It’s not like it’s a real fire,” Louis said, completely unconcerned, rolling the dice with dramatic flair. “It’s a controlled burn.”
“Right,” Niall said dryly. “Roll for it.”
Louis rolled. Natural 20.
The table erupted in laughter.
The tavern’s innkeeper, an old man with a suspiciously high amount of scotch in his system, screamed and bolted for the door at the sight of Louis’ character, fully dressed in black leather and covered in various weapons.
“Not worth it!” the innkeeper shouted before diving out the window.
“I told you!” Louis threw his arms up in victory. “My rogue is unstoppable!”
Zayn, who had been strumming his lute, glanced over at Liam and smirked.
“You know, I bet you could play a part in that, Liam. Maybe cast a fireball on that tavern. What do you think?”
“Sure, let’s add to the chaos. I’ll just throw butterflies everywhere afterward, no big deal.” Liam shot Zayn a sideways look.
Zayn chuckled, the look in his eyes almost too suggestive as he leaned closer to Liam.
“You know, butterflies are very... delicate. Just like you, right?”
Liam flushed, looking away to try and hide the blush creeping up his neck, while Zayn’s smirk only widened.
Harry, sitting slightly apart from the group, shot a small smile at Louis. Despite the chaos around him, there was something reassuring about the way Louis operated, everything was a game, every mess just another opportunity to show off his ridiculous skills.
“You’re good at making trouble,” Harry remarked quietly, his voice only carrying to Louis.
“It’s a talent, really. Some of us are born with it.” Louis turned, a grin tugging at his lips.
“You’re definitely something.” Harry chuckled, his cheeks warming just a bit.
“Something dangerous,” Louis added with a wink, leaning back in his chair. “But you like it, don’t you?”
Harry’s eyes darted away for a second, his mind spinning, before he could respond.
“Maybe. But I’m more curious about you than anything.”
Louis blinked, surprised by the subtle shift in Harry’s tone. There was something more than just playful teasing. He liked it. He really liked it.
Shawn, noticing the exchange, leaned closer to Niall and whispered
“Do you think Harry likes Louis?”
“Uh, yeah. They both have that thing going on.” Niall grinned and raised an eyebrow.
Shawn giggled softly, his hand finding Niall’s once more, the warmth between them undeniable.
“Do you think it’ll happen? I hope it does. They’re cute together.”
“It’s only a matter of time. But for now, we’ll let them figure it out.” Niall chuckled, then glanced at Louis and Harry, his expression shifting.
“Alright,” Louis suddenly shouted, standing up abruptly, “let’s go to the next part of this quest. Who’s ready to follow my lead?”
“You and your leads.” Niall groaned playfully. “Are we sure you’re not a disaster waiting to happen?”
“Oh, I’m the hero of this story, my friend,” Louis declared dramatically, “and you all will follow me into greatness!”
“Greatness, huh? Last time, your ‘greatness’ nearly got us all killed.” Harry, despite himself, found his lips curling into a grin.
“Details, details. What matters is that I survived.” Louis smirked and tossed his dice in the air.
“You survive because I bail you out every time,” Harry shot back, his tone a teasing one. His smile deepened, and for once, he felt comfortable in this chaos.
“Maybe you’ll start bailing me out more.” Louis leaned in closer, his voice soft but full of challenge.
“Maybe. I guess we’ll see.” Harry raised an eyebrow.
The game continued, the banter never ceasing. But for Louis and Harry, the real action was starting to unfold, slowly, beneath the jokes, the teasing, the ridiculous dice rolls. Every moment spent with Louis felt a little more thrilling. And Harry found himself letting go more and more with each passing minute.
Zayn and Liam slipped away for a moment of privacy. The air was heavy with tension, and as soon as the door closed behind them, Zayn didn’t hesitate. He pressed Liam against the cool brick wall, his lips capturing Liam’s in a kiss that was hot and eager. Liam gasped against his lips, his hands finding Zayn’s shirt, tugging him closer.
“Zayn... we…” Liam tried to protest, but the words were lost as Zayn kissed him deeper, fingers threading through his hair.
“Don’t think,” Zayn whispered between kisses. “Just... let go.”
“Where’d they go?” back in the room, Niall looked around, smirking at the absence of the two men.
“I’m going to guess they’re in the hallway again” Harry said, reclining in his chair, grinning. “But, you know, I'm not really interested in that drama.”
“What, not even a little curious?” Louis, watching Harry closely, gave him a sideways grin.
“Nope,” Harry said, laughing. “I’d bet they’re just kissing, but I’m more concerned with this whole game we’re playing.”
“You’re such a buzzkill, Harry.” Niall winked.
“Well,” Harry shot back, leaning in just a bit, “someone has to be the responsible one.”
“Responsible, huh? You’re too cute when you try to act all serious.” Louis chuckled, his gaze lingering on Harry for just a moment longer than necessary.
The compliment, light as it was, hit Harry like a wave. He felt his cheeks flush, but instead of retreating into his usual shell, he let himself feel it. And for the first time in a while, he didn’t want to hide.
“I’m not always serious.”
“Well, I like you better when you’re not. You’re more... fun.” Louis grinned, clearly enjoying the change in dynamic.
“And what else do you like about me, Louis?” Harry's smirk grew, a little more confident now.
“You’re unpredictable. I like that. Keeps me on my toes.” Louis leaned in just enough to make the moment feel intimate.
Their eyes locked, and Harry’s heart skipped a beat. Slowly, he let out a soft laugh, a sound that was completely his.
“Maybe we’ll see who can outdo each other.”
“Oh, I have no doubt,” Louis teased, his voice laced with affection. “You’re definitely worth the challenge.”
***
Louis was walking back to the garage after a bathroom break when he heard the voices. Harry’s words hung in the air, as Niall sat beside him, listening. Harry’s voice was a little too soft, like he was afraid of being overheard, but Louis couldn’t stop himself from listening.
“I just don’t want to mess up in front of him, you know? Louis always seems so confident,” Harry had said, the unease in his tone making Louis freeze.
He didn’t interrupt, didn’t make a sound as Harry continued, the words coming out as though they were too difficult to say. Niall hummed thoughtfully.
“Mate, he’s a mess. He just hides it well,” he teased, but Louis could confirm the truth behind his words.
Louis stood there, still and silent, the urge to comfort Harry nearly overwhelming him. But he couldn’t. He couldn’t reveal how badly it stung to hear Harry doubt himself like that. So, he stayed hidden in the shadows, taking in everything Harry was saying, even as his chest ached at how unsure Harry sounded.
“But why would someone like him, someone so... cool, want to bother with someone like me?” Harry’s voice broke the silence again, his words uncertain and vulnerable.
Louis’ stomach twisted, and he swallowed down the impulse to rush in and say something to make it better. Harry didn’t deserve to feel like that. After a long moment, Louis made his move. He stepped into the room, casually walking back toward the group. Harry looked up, startled to see him there, his face flushing slightly. Louis leaned casually against the table, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. But his eyes, for once, were soft and gentle, no teasing edge in sight.
“I don’t think you give yourself enough credit,” Louis said, his voice quiet but firm, letting the words settle between them.
Harry blinked, thrown off guard by the sincerity in Louis’ tone. He’d expected Louis to joke, to make light of the situation. Harry’s heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to respond.
Louis didn’t stop there, though. He nudged Harry’s arm lightly, keeping the teasing air about him, but this time, it wasn’t as cutting. It was soft, almost affectionate.
“And yeah, I might come off as ‘confident’, but I don’t have everything figured out either, you know?”
Harry gave a small smile, his nerves slowly melting away. Harry found himself leaning into it, the reassurance settling in his chest. Louis really did like him, even if it was not as Harry wanted.
“Don’t stress it, mate,” Louis added, ruffling Harry’s hair with the same casual charm. “I think you’re perfect just as you are.”
His voice lowered just enough for only Harry to hear, adding.
“And if you’re worried about messing up, I’ll be here to catch you. Always.”
Harry didn’t quite know how to respond, but he felt warmth bloom in his chest at the sentiment, even if it was masked by Louis’ usual sass.
The game resumed, and Louis, not missing a beat, moved back into his usual chaotic role-playing mode. But now, when he made his moves, he was a little extra sweet toward Harry, always checking in with him, making sure he was okay, his usual playful jabs coming with a softer edge.
When Louis made his next move, he leaned over to Harry, flashing a grin.
“Alright, watch this. I’m about to show you how a real rogue handles a fight,” he said, voice dripping with confidence, though his eyes stayed soft on Harry. “Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.”
Harry chuckled, his nerves finally starting to ease as he relaxed into the familiar banter.
“If you’re trying to impress me, it’s working,” he said, nudging Louis playfully.
Louis’ grin widened, but he didn’t let his usual teasing take over completely. Instead, he stayed close, offering a supportive smile as he reached for the dice.
“Good,” he said softly, his voice just above a whisper. “Because you’re worth impressing.”
The words landed with a gentle warmth. He didn’t know if he was reading too much into it, but he didn’t really care. For once, things felt... easy. And maybe Louis was showing him that they could be friends at least.
***
It was another quiet evening. Everyone was sprawled out on mismatched chairs and bean bags, with the usual sounds of dice rolling, playful banter, and occasional bursts of laughter filling the air.
Louis was looking around the bunch of small things the boys had in shelves, enchanted by the little pieces of their history he could find, but one picture caught Louis' eye, a picture of a young Harry, maybe around 13 or 14, wearing a T-shirt with a big bold print that read: Harry <3 Louis.
Louis froze for a second, his heart skipping a beat. He held up the picture with a sly grin.
“Well, well, well,” he said with a teasing lilt in his voice. “What do we have here?”
Harry’s face immediately turned crimson, his eyes widening in embarrassment. He shot a look at Niall, who was grinning mischievously from across the room.
“Don’t you dare!” Harry warned, his voice a little too loud for the subtlety he was hoping for. “That was just a stupid prank! A joke, alright?”
Niall, still chuckling, nudged Shawn who was sitting beside him.
“I may or may not have had something to do with this,” Niall admitted, his smile playful. “Just a little prank from the good ol’ days. But, I guess Harry’s always had a thing for Louis, huh?”
Shawn, who hadn’t been clued in on the subtle crush Harry had on Louis, blinked in confusion, then laughed softly.
“Wait, seriously? Harry was into Louis back then?”
“Yeah, mate,” Niall teased. “Apparently, our Louis has had admirers from the start.”
Louis held the picture up higher, winking at Harry with a mock serious expression.
“I didn’t know I was that irresistible back in the day. But I guess you had good taste even then, Styles.”
“Please, no more. I was an idiot back then.” Harry buried his face in his hands, letting out a groan.
The group burst into laughter, but Louis couldn’t stop himself from grinning widely. He leaned in a little closer to Harry, still holding the photo and keeping his voice light, but there was a softness in it too.
“Come on, love, it’s cute. You clearly had your eyes on the prize even as a kid.”
“Sure, sure. You were the prize back then. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.” Harry looked up at Louis, trying to muster a serious face, but the faintest smile tugged at his lips. Louis chuckled.
“Yeah, I’m a lot to handle, I’ll admit.” He dropped the teasing tone for a second and glanced at Harry with a more genuine smile. “But you’ve always had great taste, and I’ve got to give you credit for that.”
“Looks like there’s a history there I didn’t know about.” Shawn, now a little more clued into the situation, nudged Niall with an amused grin.
“Oh, this is just the beginning, mate. Harry got years of tension to work through. ”Niall laughed, giving Harry a playful nudge.
But before Harry could retort, the conversation shifted slightly. Zayn and Liam, who had been hanging back in their own conversation, exchanged a look, then casually leaned in toward the group, their eyes twinkling with mischief.
“So, Harry,” Liam started, his voice light but with an edge of curiosity, “Are you ever gonna admit that you’ve got a thing for Louis?”
Louis nearly choked on his own laughter, but he quickly masked it with a playful smirk.
“Yeah, Harry. Admit it , ” he teased, leaning back in his chair with exaggerated confidence. “You can’t hide it forever.”
Harry's face turned beet red, his eyes darting nervously from person to person.
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he mumbled, though the soft, shy smile he tried to hide only made it more obvious.
Zayn raised an eyebrow at the obvious tension between the two of them, but he leaned over to Liam, whispering low enough so no one else could hear.
“Do you think they’ll ever figure it out?”
“Oh, they’ve already figured it out. They’re just waiting for the other to make the first move.” Liam smirked back at Zayn, his voice barely above a whisper, but full of quiet certainty.
“Couldn’t agree more. It’s practically written all over them.” Zayn chuckled softly, giving a knowing look.
Louis waved the photo at Harry again.
“You know, Harry,” he said, with a softer, teasing tone. “If you want, I can always take you out sometime. Let’s see if we can finally make up for your lost teenage crush.”
Harry let out a nervous laugh, but his eyes softened as he met Louis’ gaze, and his fingers brushed against Louis’ arm, just for a split second. The touch sent a jolt through Louis’ chest, making him feel something he didn’t quite have the words for.
“Maybe one day,” Harry said shyly, his smile shy but genuine.
Louis couldn’t help but grin, feeling his heart race with something close to happiness. He leaned back in his chair and gave Harry a playful wink.
“I’ll hold you to that.”
The teasing continued as everyone settled back into their game. They couldn’t help but steal glances at each other, their smiles lingering. And as the night wore on, with everyone lost in their roles and the game, Louis couldn’t help but feel that maybe it was the beginning of something.
***
It was their last day playing D&D together. The garage felt a little emptier, quieter, as they all gathered around the table, the familiar setup of dice, snacks, and maps spread out in front of them. The end of the school year, the end of their senior year, was getting closer, and it was hanging in the air between them, bittersweet, the way all good things eventually came to an end.
The game had reached its final battle. Their characters were battered, nearly defeated, and the tension was palpable in the air. Louis shifted uncomfortably in his chair, his fingers tracing the edges of his die absentmindedly, his gaze flicking between his friends.
Niall and Shawn sat close together, Shawn’s hand resting gently on Niall’s knee. They were quietly smiling at each other, whispering soft words as if the rest of the world didn’t matter at that moment. Zayn and Liam were sitting opposite to them, the two of them sharing lingering looks and teasing smiles, their playful banter laced with a deeper intimacy.
But it was Louis who was quiet. His usual mischievous energy was dimmed, and there was a slight sadness to the way he looked around at the group. It wasn’t just the game ending, it was the end of high school, the end of this chapter in their lives. And though he would never admit it out loud, Louis wasn’t ready to say goodbye.
As they faced off against the final enemy, everyone went through their moves quickly, eager to finish the game they’d spent so many hours playing. But it was Harry who broke the silence, his voice calm but resolute.
“I use my last spell slot,” Harry said, his eyes fixed on Louis as he spoke. “I’m shielding Louis.”
The words hung in the air for a moment before everyone processed what had just happened. Louis blinked, looking at Harry with wide eyes. He hadn’t expected that, didn’t expect Harry to use his last spell on him.
The dice rolled, and the spell worked. The enemy was defeated, and their party emerged victorious.
After the final battle, everyone let out a collective cheer. But Louis stayed quiet for a moment, staring at Harry, something unreadable in his gaze. Harry just smiled, and Louis couldn't help the warmth that spread through his chest.
“That was stupidly brave,” Louis muttered, his voice low, but there was an unmistakable appreciation in it. “And kind of impressive.”
Harry shrugged, his smile still there, but there was a softness behind it that only Louis seemed to notice.
“You’re welcome,” Harry said simply.
Louis stared at him, his mind racing, his heart beating a little faster than usual. Harry cared, not just about the game. Louis could see Harry cared about him .
And Louis… he was starting to care, too. A little too much.
The game ended soon after that, but no one moved. The atmosphere was heavy, but not in an uncomfortable way. It was just the reality that they were nearing the end of an era, the end of their time together as a group, as friends.
“I can’t believe this is it,” Niall said quietly, looking over at the group. “Next year, we won’t be here anymore. We’ll be in different places.”
“Yeah, it’s a little scary. But we’ll make it work, right?” Shawn nodded beside him, squeezing Niall’s hand.
Zayn leaned back in his chair, resting his arm around Liam’s shoulders.
“We always make it work,” he said, his voice smooth, but there was a hint of sadness behind the bravado. “It’s just… things are going to change.”
“We’ve spent so many years together. It feels unreal, you know? But it’s time for the next chapter. Whatever that looks like.” Liam nodded in agreement.
Louis swallowed, trying to fight the tightness in his throat.
“Yeah, change…” he said, his voice quieter than usual. “It’s just… I don’t know, it feels like I’ve only just gotten to really know all of you.”
There was a pause. Zayn caught his eye and smirked lightly.
“Aw, Louis, are you getting sentimental on us?”
Louis rolled his eyes, though his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“Shut up. I’m not being sentimental. Just… It's strange, okay? We’re all going in different directions, and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Shawn leaned over, offering a teasing smile.
“Aw, come on, mate. You’ll figure it out. You always do.” He glanced at Niall, who gave him a smile of reassurance.
“We’re all in this together. Whatever happens, we’ve got each other.” Niall added with a laugh.
Harry, who had been unusually quiet, finally spoke up, his voice soft but full of meaning.
“Yeah, things change. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still be there for each other. It’s not the end.”
Louis looked at Harry, meeting his eyes. For a moment, everything else faded away. The garage, the world outside, the bittersweetness of the evening, it didn’t matter. All that mattered was Harry’s words, and the way he looked at him, the connection between them growing with every passing moment.
“Is it just me, or is there something really going on there?” Zayn caught the look between them and leaned toward Liam, whispering just loud enough for the two to hear.
“Oh, it’s definitely not just you.” Liam smirked, but his tone was teasing.
Louis blushed slightly but didn’t pull his gaze away from Harry. Harry’s shy smile made his heart skip a beat, and Louis couldn’t help but feel a warmth spread through him.
“So, what’s next for everyone?” Niall asked, breaking the silence and turning the attention to the future. “Are we all going to be around for a while?”
“Probably not,” Zayn said with a slight grin. “I’m heading off to study music. Maybe a bit of modeling too, if I can get my foot in the door.”
“I’ve got some opportunities in business. We’ll see where that takes me.” Liam leaned in, his voice a little lower.
“I’m not sure yet, but I’m thinking about maybe opening a music studio. Something small.” Niall nodded.
“I think you’d be great at it. Whatever happens, I’m with you.” Shawn smiled at Niall, squeezing his hand again.
Louis sighed, glancing around the room. He could feel the weight of the moment, but there was also a sense of peace in it.
“I don’t know what’s next either,” he said softly. “But I think I’ll figure it out.”
“You’ve got this, Lou. I know you do.” Harry turned to him, a soft smile on his face.
“Thanks, love. I think you do, too.” Louis couldn’t help but smile back, feeling the pull in his chest that he hadn’t expected.
The moment stretched on, but neither of them moved. The touches, the lingering glances, everything felt heavier, but in a good way. The connection between them was undeniable, and they both knew this wasn’t the end. Not really.
Not for them.
As the night wore on, the teasing, the laughter, and the lingering touches continued, but underneath it all was a quiet understanding that their friendship was about to evolve into something new. The end of their senior year was fast approaching, but whatever came next, they would face it together. And maybe Louis would finally figure out what it was that Harry had been offering him all this time.
But for now, all they could do was enjoy the moment, the way Harry’s fingers brushed against his as they reached for something at the same time, the way Harry’s smile made him feel like everything would be okay.
***
Harry stacked the character sheets, shaking his head with a fond smile.
"I still can’t believe you walked straight into that trap."
"I prefer to call it an ‘experiment in bravery.’’ Louis grinned, completely unapologetic.
"You mean recklessness." Harry chuckled.
"You always know what to say, don’t you, Curly? Quiet most of the time, then bam, wisdom." Louis leaned against the table, watching Harry with an amused glint in his eyes.
Harry ducked his head, fingers shuffling the dice absently. The tips of his ears burned, and Louis noticed something in his chest tightening.
"You’re different when you play. Confident. It’s… nice." Louis watched Harry for a beat longer, his teasing smile softening at the edges.
"You think so?" Harry glanced up, surprise flickering in his green eyes.
"Don’t let it go to your head." Louis shrugged, keeping his voice light.
A quiet moment stretched between them. The usual playful spark in Louis’ gaze lingered, but now it was mixed with warmth. Harry felt his pulse quicken, something fragile and electric humming between them.
"You know, for someone who’s usually so shy, you’re pretty good at surprising me." Louis lowered his voice just a little.
"Maybe you just weren’t paying attention before." Harry smiled nervously.
"Maybe." Louis grinned, leaning a little closer.
Louis stepped closer, closing the space between them with a quiet curiosity.
"What else have I been missing, then?"
Harry hesitated for only a split second before deciding to be brave.
"This."
Before Louis could respond, Harry leaned in, their lips brushing in a soft, tentative kiss. It was warm, sweet, and just a little awkward, but neither of them pulled away. Louis recovered quickly, tilting his head slightly, deepening the kiss just enough, his fingers ghosting along Harry’s cheek.
They parted, breathless and giddy, but the energy between them remained, still crackling with something new. Louis smirked, eyes glinting with playfulness as he pulled away just enough to speak.
"Not bad, Curly. Didn’t think you had it in you."
"I’ve been thinking about doing that for a while." Harry, still blushing but smiling, admitted.
"Yeah? You should’ve done it sooner." Louis’ grin widened.
The moment stretched a bit longer. Soft, comfortable, and full of promise.
"I’ve got an idea. How about we roll for it?" Louis chuckled, a mischievous glint returning to his eyes.
"Roll for what?" Harry raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
Louis pulled out a set of dice from his bag, giving them a light shake.
"We roll the dice, and if we get a nat 20, we kiss again and i’ll take you on a date. If not... Well, we’ll just see what happens."
"You’re such a dork." Harry snorted, trying to hide a smile.
"Only for you, Curly." Louis leaned in a little closer, his tone playful.
They both grinned at each other before Harry took the dice from Louis, shaking them in his hand. With a dramatic flourish, he let them drop onto the table. The dice spun and tumbled, rolling across the surface before finally coming to a halt. Harry’s heart was beating fast in his chest.
Harry glanced at the result, then back at Louis, a somber look on his face.
"It 's a nat 1."
Louis raised an eyebrow, but before Harry could say anything else, he leaned in, lips brushing Harry’s once more. This kiss was different, not hesitant, not questioning, but sure, full of the unspoken things they were just starting to figure out.
Louis deepened the kiss, asking for entrance with his tongue, and had to hold back a moan when Harry opened without hesitation. Harry wrapped his arms around his waist and Louis let his hands run through his hair, down to his side. He pushed Harry a little until the boy was against the table and kissed him passionately.
When they pulled away, Louis whispered, his breath warm against Harry’s lips.
"Well, we make our own destiny anyway."
Harry smiled, his hand brushing against Louis’ as they lingered in the quiet after the kiss.
"Yeah. We do."
They lost themselves in each other, the world outside the little bubble they’d created fading into the background as they began this new adventure together.
