The Ancient City was told about in the book, detailed description of the horrors that awaited any adventurer that happened to wander their way in there and giving ample warnings to stay away lest the adventurer be killed in cold blood by the ruthless warden. Nobody had ever made their way into the deep dark far enough to even encounter it and make it out alive... until some dumb allay decided the warden might have needed a friend.
Ren and Scar were adventurers, building massive structures and farms and the like to make their quality of life better as they waited for their friend Bdubs to return from the End. They freed Grian, an unusual Human-Allay hybrid who was endlessly curious about the world that awaited him outside of the woodland mansion jail cell. Skizz and his friends were some of the pillagers posted all around the world in search of riches and things to trade to keep them occupied, hoping to avoid the massive structures the adventurers built not too far away. All of these people, though, feared what awaited them in the last unknown in the world: The Ancient City, the city of fury, guarded by the last Warden who protected the remains of his city with his life until the very end.
