Chapter Text

Chapter one "The jewel thief"

As the myth says, thousands of years ago, the Moon Goddess and the Sun Goddess created the world with all its beauty and wonders. Among all the creatures they created, dragons were certainly the most fantastical. These magical creatures could control the elements of nature. The goddesses also created humans, weak creatures that needed the protection of dragons. However, the dragons used their magic to harm humans. Humans were powerless against them and suffered greatly at the hands of the flying tyrants. Why? Because dragons had magic, power, and weak humans had no hope against them. Yet, humans had faith that one day things would change.

The Moon Goddess, who watched humans struggle, pitied them and granted a young boy the power to hear the voice of stones.

Another young boy, who was lying in his bed, asked the woman telling him the story, "What could a human do if they could hear stones talk?"

The boy's mother smiled, and her gentle voice continued the story. "Stones held all the secrets of the world, and some of them... three specific stones held hidden powers unlike any other in the world. A bright green emerald could control all magic in the world, and it was called the Heart of Magic. A purple ruby gave eternal life and health to whoever possessed it, and finally, a dark black diamond had even more mysterious powers that no one knows today."

"The Diamond of Chaos."

"Exactly. The thief of stones used their powers to free humans from the dragon's reign, but of course, dragons were not easy enemies. They had surrounded him with air dragons in the sky, earth and fire dragons on land, and water dragons in every sea and lake."

"What did he do to escape?"

"The only thing he could do - he used his life to lock all the dragons' magic inside the emerald. Dragons, now powerless, returned defeated to their kingdom, and since then, no one knows where the thief of stones or the magical stones are."

"But dragons still have magic; I've seen them use it in dragon races. They're incredible!!"

"There are very few dragons that can still control elements; they're called the Chosen Ones, and they attend a school for magical dragons."

"Wow, that sounds fantastic!"

"Maybe, but little human boys like you can't go there."

The boy's face fell when he heard his mother's words, but he didn't interrupt her again.

"After all, humans won their freedom and have advanced a lot since the time they were slaves to dragons. Human technology is now as powerful as dragon magic. And dragons have learned to fear humans. If a war were to happen between us, we don't really know who would win."

"A fair battle."

"Maybe. You know what's interesting? Some people believe that the descendants of the thief of stones inherited his special ability to hear the voice of stones. Maybe one of them is hiding among us, and one day, with the power of stones, they'll return to finish what their ancestor started."

"What was that?"

"To eradicate the dragons living in our world!"

"That's a terrible thing to do; I'd rather be friends with dragons - they're awesome and fly high!"

"You're a very good boy, always seeing the best in others. It's time for bed now."

The boy's mother stood up from his bed and turned off the lights before leaving his room.

"Goodnight, Mom."

"Goodnight, Oscar."

The boy placed his right hand, which wore a bracelet made of small agate beads, under his pillow. The small stones sang a soothing melody that lulled him to sleep, and for another time, he wondered if being able to hear this soothing melody was a blessing or a curse. Closing his eyes, he wished he never had to discover the answer.
