So About the Name

Summary:

Oliver and Chloe have a quick chat about baby names.

Work Text:

Chloe was sitting in her hospital bed, holding their newborn son in her arms, cooing softly as she gently rocked him. Oliver hadn’t been able to take his eyes off either of them for hours now. But despite the joyful feeling of becoming a father for the first time he still had some misgivings.

“So, tell me again why you want to call him Jonathan?” Oliver asked. Chloe’s soft expression changed as she looked away from their son to glare daggers at him.

“I told you,” she said impatiently. “In honour of Mr Kent.” She turned her attention back to the baby.

“Just seems a bit odd, naming your son after your best friend’s dead father,” Oliver said. Chloe was pretending she hadn’t heard him. “Your totally best friend forever who you said you definitely still don’t have feelings for.” She continued to give him the silent treatment.

“You know, my parents are dead too, why aren’t we naming him after my father?”

“Robert can be his middle name,” Chloe said as if that settled it. “Jonathan Robert Sullivan-Kent.”

“Excuse me?” Oliver exclaimed.

“Sullivan-Queen,” Chloe corrected quickly with a nervous smile. “I misspoke.”

“Uh huh,” Oliver replied through gritted teeth. He regarded their son for a moment.

“You know, we’re both blondes, and his hair’s pretty dark,” he said.

“Don’t be silly, Ollie - all babies are born with dark hair. It’ll get lighter as he grows up,” she scolded him. She sounded convinced at least.

“Just tell me, Chloe, that Clark’s a thing of the past and he’s definitely not the baby’s father,” Oliver pleaded.

“Oliver!” Chloe exclaimed. “You are definitely Jonathan’s father, don’t worry about that. And if Clark and I aren’t a thing of the past it’s because we were never a thing to start with. We’re just friends.” Oliver felt a little better.

“And you’re not naming him Jonathan because you wish Clark was the father,” he asked.

“What?” she asked, giving that over-the-top, loud, fake laugh she always did when someone had hit the nail firmly on the head about her feelings for Clark. “That’s crazy. Maybe you need some sleep, Ollie.”

“Uh huh,” he said again, feeling his good mood drain away. He kissed both Chloe and Jonathan on the forehead, promising he’d be back as soon as he’d had some rest. Once out of the hospital he didn’t head home, however, feeling he needed a stiff drink first. He wondered if maybe before they got married he should have gotten that pre-nup after all.
