It has been 354 days since Jonathan Kent died.
Clark still has not put on his father's jacket. But all he has now is that jacket, as far as he's concerned.
Clark and Lex have always seen each other most clearly at the worst possible moments. This is one of those "moments", stretched over a period of painful growth - for Clark, for Lex, and for their relationship. They will not emerge unscathed. But that pain and reckoning is what seeds their future reconciliation.

Note: Set in Season 6, after Trespass.-This is a Clex story set in Season 6, written in full fidelity to canon -- with one primary exception that will become obvious. This story has a happy ending. It is entirely earned.
The journey is going to hurt because these two characters, written honestly, hurt. Clark and Lex are entirely themselves here -- nothing truncated, no payoff accelerated for my own convenience as an author or as someone who loves them. The reconciliation will be organic to who they are, to the obstacles each of them has to get through alone and together.
Every word between here and that reconciliation is the reason it means anything at all.

Clark meets the new kid, Bruce Wayne, and his first impression isn't great. He thinks that Bruce is spoiled and rude and out of place. Maybe that's why he blows up at him. But he still saves him when he's in trouble, that's just the kind of person that Clark is.
After a while they develop a tentative kind of friendship over the summer. Bruce isn't like anyone else that Clark knows, and he feels connected to him in all of his out of place-ness.
His own feelings for the other take him by surprise, he only hopes that he can stomp them down before he ruins their friendship over them.

This is a Clex fanfic based on Smallville, in light of the first three seasons. I wasn't able to watch past Season 3 because I was heartbroken that Clark didn't tell Lex the truth and let him be taken away by the Asylum, leaving him to think he's crazy. At that point I started this fan fiction to explore their friendship and dynamic and all the possibilities that I didn't think the show would ever explore, while still staying true to their personalities.
