Work Text:
Listen to the poem or read below.
I burned, found myself caught in flame
That swallowed up my very frame,
Yet nothing compares to the day
I thought you gone.
I could not scream nor cry your name
But carried on.
To keep you safe, unblemished, whole,
I’d sacrifice my wayward soul,
Forsake my path, give up control:
A slate wiped clean.
I’d go only where I was told—
A mere machine.
And yet I think love would remain—
Though stripped of self, I’d still retain
That spark of truth to light the way:
A tiny beam
To guide me back to your domain
Through steel-bound dreams.
Oh faithful friend, I’d not demand
You give your soul, though it be damned.
Your demon master may command
The road you drive,
But you are more than what he planned—
You are alive
I’ve heard your roar, seen reckless grace
As you approach your parking space,
And I have thrilled here in my place
Of dusty tome.
I long to be the heart-warmed space
That you call home.
Through fire and ash, we both have lived,
Our fates reversed by Adam’s gift,
Yet languishing—unmoored, adrift—
I ache for you.
So come to me with speed so swift
And love me true.
Together we will open doors
Once barred by hellish holy wars;
Then cherished, chosen, and restored,
We will be free—
A shop and car joined evermore,
At last… a we.
