    Summary

"(In my sleep I dreamed this poem)

Someone I loved once gave me
    a box full of darkness.

It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift."

title from Mary Oliver's poem "The Uses of Sorrow"

After Attila, Irving spends more time with Burt and Fields, in investigation and in companionship, learning to trust and unlearning sorrow. When Fields leaves the picture, Irving realizes how short life is and makes a choice.
