Chapter Text

He sat in the back of the class as always. His pen tapped rapidly on his desk as other students rushed into the room, filling it with chatter. 14 year old Isshiki Totomaru went to BLUE, the most prestigious detective academy in England that produced the world's greatest detectives. Totomaru always looked up to the thought of being one of those detectives ever since he was little. After his parents had tragically been murdered when he was 4, he had been sent to live with his grandparents on the farther side of Japan. As he got older, he would learn more about his parents murder case. His grandmother always told him that detectives were the ones solving cases like these and bringing the perpetrators to justice, bringing a sense of peace to the affected families as well. His grandfather would chime in and explain how the feeling of justice felt great and seeing the families have some sort of closure made his grandfather keep pursuing the job until he was forced to retire. Hearing of his grandfather's experiences, it inspired Totomaru to one day be as great of a detective as his grandfather. He always admired the idea of bringing justice to the people who deserve it and helping others in the process. The cartoons he watched were always action packed and he longed for the feeling of accomplishment after the protagonist had taken down the antagonist. His grandparents knew of his desires very well, so when Totomaru asked to be signed up for BLUE, they weren’t surprised. He had seen some hesitancy when he had told them that it was in England, but assured them that he would be able to manage himself. Eventually, his grandparents allowed him to sign up and take the entrance exam. He was excited, marking the date on his calendar and studied hard for the upcoming exam. After he had taken it, he was positive he would have gotten a decent score to get in, but to his massive shock, he had only managed to barely pass and get in. He was disheartened by this. Even though he had technically made it in, the fact that he had the lowest score of everybody else was a little embarrassing. When he told his grandparents, instead of being met with disappointment or upset, they encouraged him and congratulated him on making it in. The warmth of his grandparents' love made him feel motivated, promising to them that he will work hard and become the detective he’d always wanted to be.

It’s now been 3 years since he started his attendance at BLUE. He is currently on the verge of failing most of his classes and is deemed the lowest rank in all of the school. This was like every other year where he would be a point or 2 away from failing, yet the gods seemed to be on his side, allowing him to pass every year. Having seen these low scores for the past 3 years, Toto came to the conclusion that he was not suited to become a detective, at least, not a high ranking one. Compared to the rest of his classmates, heck, even the students in the lower grades, he always seemed a couple thousand steps behind them. All the other attendants at BLUE had mastered at least 2 skills and proficiently learned 3 or more languages. Totomaru, on the other hand, had barely mastered 1 skill and less proficiently learned some english. Even with these difficulties, however, everytime he would reluctantly tell his grandparents his final exam score or give them an update on how it was going, they would always be supportive and look on the positive side to things, keeping Totomaru motivated to keep going.

The classroom chatter slowly depleted as the professor stepped into the room. She quickly organized her paper on the podium at the front of the room and clapped to get the class's attention, the sound echoing throughout the now silent room.

“Ahem! Good morning, class. Today, if you haven’t heard, we have a new student joining us today.” The classroom door slid open. Walking in was a dashing young man in his BLUE uniform, which seemed as if it were made specifically for him and him only. He was tall, especially for someone only in their Junior year, his head ghosting over the door frame. His hair was elegantly slicked back, presenting his bright blue eyes that sparkled with an unspoken determination. His steps echoed throughout the whisper filled room. He stopped dead center and bowed slightly. “This is Kamonohashi Ron! Please treat him like your other classmates. Kamonohashi, would you like to give a quick introduction?”

“Of course,” Kamonohashi turned towards the class.

“As everyone heard, my name is Kamonohashi Ron, but you may call me Ron if you’d like.” His voice was as sharp as the teachers and he was neither smiling or frowning. But his presence alone sent the girls blushing as even the guys seemed mesmerized. Ron bowed again before heading towards an empty seat a few rows in front of Toto. Toto was too, in fact, mesmerized at such beauty the new student had shown up with. He couldn’t stop his eyes from following Ron's every move as he sat in his new seat, setting down his materials and getting ready for class. Thoughts raced inside his head as he suddenly felt butterflies in his stomach as the lesson started. He placed his head on his hand, resting it comfortably as he stared into the back of Ron’s head. He looked at every strand of hair on Ron's head, wondering how perfectly each one fell on top of one another. Ron was also conveniently placed near a window, the sunlight pouring into the room and onto Ron made the scene feel ethereal. Toto let out a sigh subconsciously, admiring the sight in front of him, starting to gradually smile as he leaned into his hand more.

“Isshiki!” The professor's sharp voice quickly cut through Totos' daze.

“U-Uh, y-yes?” Toto shot up from his seat in a panic.

“Page 73 please?” Toto blinked a few seconds before shyly sitting back down and reaching in his bag to grab his textbook.

“...W-which textbook?” The class erupted in laughter, some snickering quietly. Toto’s face burned with embarrassment as the teacher asked him to stay after class, not noticing a pair of blue eyes looking at him with an unreadable expression.

---------

The class ended painfully slowly. After the bell finally rang, everybody scrambled to pack their things and exit the classroom. Toto was the last one to finish packing. He walked over to the teachers desk as the teacher signaled towards him. He got a quick scolding from the teacher as she gave him a warning. He exited the classroom, letting out a relieved sigh. He already wanted to head back to his dorm or go to the library to “study”.

Just a few more classes…
