“What? Did you expect me to play the game like you? Be the perfect heir to continue our family’s legacy?” Aerion sneered. “Contrary to what most of you think I do have dreams beyond our legacy.”
“I look forward to seeing you achieve your desires then.” Valarr earnestly replied.
“Can’t you give me a reaction for once, Valarr?”
For the past few years, Valarr had grown accustomed to the mocking sound of Aerion referring to him as his cousin. He didn’t realized how much he missed the sound of his name coming from his lips. “A reaction?”
“You’re constantly so calm and composed; it’s suffocating to watch,” explained Aerion. “You’re repressing so much inside that one day you’ll crack and it will be one of the greatest days of my life.”
“You wound me.”
“You know I always envied you, effortlessly loved by everyone,” confessed Aerion as averted his gaze. “Even if it’s all a facade.”
Valarr’s mismatched eyes lingered on his face before he uttered. “No, not everyone.”

He's four. Bertholdt Hoover is four when he first shoots a rifle, flinching at the sharp noise, arms trembling, too weak to hold the weapon almost as big as him, cold metal burning his skin.
He hates it.

By the age of nine, he's a marksman, hitting target after target, reloading with the calm of a master, long having surpassed his instructors, as he assembles his rifle without looking, and aims in a moment of precision, arms steady, trigger finger already calloused from years and years of practice.
He pulls the trigger and feels the moment the bullet connects, another bullseye, and he feels that little spark of pride again, because he knows he can do this, because he never feels as alive as he does here, rifle in hand, on the range, instructors giving him their nods of approval.

Summary

Two months later, with Abigail off to college in Germany, Will and Hannibal negotiate a tenuous life in coastal France, featuring an extra ghostly house pest and all the emotional baggage you might expect. Things come together and things fall apart in this gothic romance, Mizumono murder family (eventual) fix-it. Diverges from canon the night of the lamb dinner (the last supper).
