Chapter Text
It started out as a joke the morning after pittfest. The morning after the shift from hell. Samira sleepily whispers to Jack “so how long do you think it’ll take the med students and santos to find out about us?” He laughs and tells her “I give it a month, we’re not working the same shift right now, we spend most of our shifts wearing gloves so it’s not like they’d notice the rings.” Samira kisses her husband’s cheek with an “I love you” before the couple is joined by their toddler Lucas who climbs into the bed. Samira watches their boy cuddle into his dad’s arms, their boy sleepily whispers “missed you daddy!” Jack whispers back “I missed you and mommy so much!” Her boy whispers “hi mama!” And she plants a kiss to his forehead with a “hi baby!” Samira looks at her boys and can’t help the smile on her face. She’d gotten so incredibly lucky. The couple lays across from each other with their boy in between them, with the couple content that they had both made it out and that their boy was safe. The family enjoys breakfast at a local diner before a trip to the park, which is filled with Samira’s favorite sound: the laughter of her boys. The sound she had missed the previous night, instead she opted to take a shower then snuggle with her baby. As soon as her boy was in her arms he sleepily whispered “mama?” she whispered back “mama’s got you baby, let’s go back to sleep. Daddy will be home in a bit.” The sound of the boy’s breaths drowning out the screams from the night. Eventually she’s waking up to Jack shaking her awake at three AM while holding back laughter because she fell asleep in the toddler bed. (She’d also come home from night shift before and found her boys asleep, in that same toddler bed.) She hadn’t heard her husband laugh since he and Luke had made her breakfast in bed before her shift from hell. She let jack carry her to bed, and falls asleep safely in his arms. The couple wakes up with the sun shinning through their bedroom windows, and the birds chirping. Jack whispered that the fact that it was such a beautiful day was such a slap in the face after the tragedy that had rocked the city the night before. Samira snuggles into her husband’s embrace and whispers “it is, I missed you last night” jack whispers back “missed you too Mira.” That night, they both finally cried; for the victims, their families, and the kids who they couldn’t save that shift.
A week later the couple is back to both working days. Jack’s love for nights was gone once he and Samira got married five years ago, after meeting during a night out, and the rest was history. But occasionally he still had to work the night shift due to the ER being short staffed. He would drop Lucas off with Samira after spending the day at the park or having a picnic, or whatever was planned for boys day. She’d hold Lucas with a “mama missed you so much baby.” Jack would kiss his wife with a “goodnight, I love you baby, see you in the morning.” Then he’d give Lucas one last hug and kiss to the temple with a “be good for mama bud, I love you and will see you in the morning.” He’d watch his two favorite people walk out to the car, with Lucas always telling samira about his day, while she’d listen intently. Sometimes the pair would stop on the way out so Lucas could get a hug from his Uncle Robby, Aunt Mel, Aunt Dana, and Aunt Heather. Jack and Samira frequently joked that their son had every single ER nurse, tech, doctor and social worker wrapped around his finger. Nights where Jack was on shift were tough for their boy, but a few extra bedtime stories and snuggles from his mama helped. Eventually as the sun rose jack’s truck would pull up next to Samira’s SUV in the garage of the suburban home, the coffee would be made, and Jack would reunite with the two people who mean the world to him.
