Work Text:
Having Aya inside her uncle’s shop after they kissed at the prom felt like the Earth had shifted, like everything had changed but she couldn’t remember it any other way.
It honestly felt like Mitsuki was put on this planet to hold Aya’s hand as she pressed play on another demo, headphones on her head as she started to sway with the music.
She realized that Aya listened to music with her entire body: her hand squeezed hers similar to the drum beat, her head nodded along and her mouth started sounding out the chorus once she tried stringing together the English lyrics. Even without hearing the song herself, Mitsuki could almost follow along just by watching her. In between tracks, Aya would give a couple word review and make sure to point at a song’s title on the back of the CD if she really liked it.
Mitsuki’s eyes drifted over the albums on the shelf and with a tsk, she pulled one out and put it back in alphabetical order after some other patron had reshelved the CD in the wrong place. She heard a giggle and saw Aya smiling at the action, so Mitsuki returned the grin and bumped her shoulder into hers.
Almost an entire hour passed like this and Mitsuki knew they were going to run out of this week’s sample CDs soon. Before she could open her mouth, she heard a voice behind her which caused her to jump.
“Hey, Mitsuki, you should take your break. You’ve been here all day haven’t you?”
She turned and saw Joe at the counter with a sticker gun and a stack of CDs. Mitsuki actually wasn’t sure how long he had been there, which caused her ears to turn red as her hand dropped Aya’s.
“O-oh, yeah, I guess I could use a break.”
“Should I go?” Aya meekly asked, already putting the headphones back on the stand.
Her eyes clearly said “I’m not ready to go.”
Mitsuki’s heart raced in her chest as she quickly shook her head. “You can pop in the back with me, we can grab a soda or something.”
Before Aya could say anything else, Mitsuki grabbed her arm and gently directed her towards the back stockroom. She saw the glint in Joe’s eye so she shot a quick glare at her uncle as they went through the swing doors.
The stockroom was a mess compared to the main shop, but there was a small corner with a couch, mini-fridge and a CD player set up. She nodded to Aya to have a seat as she quickly grabbed two melon sodas from the fridge.
She gave one to Aya and then eyed the boombox and the random assortment of CDs on the shelf with it. These albums were more from Joe’s personal collection, but of course there were so many that Mitsuki had fond memories of hearing as a kid. One CD in particular stood out so she deftly opened its case and put it in the player.
Mitsuki sank into the couch next to Aya and popped open her can, taking a quick swig before putting it on the small table in front of her.
“I’ve really enjoyed hanging out with you today, so thanks for stopping by.” Mitsuki quickly said, her shoulder pressing against Aya’s, whose face softened at the words.
“I’m happy to be here, uh—“ Aya’s face went pink as she quickly finished her sentence, “with you.”
That had Mitsuki’s face coloring too, her impulse to dart her eyes away and hide. She swallowed and let the music power her as she bravely looked into Aya’s eyes.
“Well uh, I can’t stop thinking about what we did at prom.” She leaned closer, almost like she was sharing a secret. “And how I wouldn’t mind doing it again.”
“I’d be okay with that.” Aya answered almost too quickly, but that was fine with Mitsuki. Before she realized, she was already leaning towards the other girl.
She closed her eyes the moment their lips touched, and right away, Mitsuki realized she would have Aya’s lip gloss imprinted in her memory forever. Her hand instantly went to Aya’s jaw, brushing her curls with her knuckles.
Aya’s hand shifted to her waist, and when she gently pulled, Mitsuki moved like water. She rocked forward, their arms tightened and they were closer than before. Her heart was racing, faster than the music playing on the boombox, but she didn’t feel embarrassed anymore.
All she wanted was to be with Aya.
With a gasp, she pulled back to take a breath and finally opened her eyes. Aya’s face was flushed pink, another detail that would stick with Mitsuki whenever they were apart. Love overflowed in her heart, causing her to bury her face in Aya’s shoulder.
“You’re just perfect,” Mitsuki said without thinking, and when Aya clutched her closer, she found herself pressing a kiss against the soft skin of her throat.
“Sp-speak for yourself,” Aya whispered before nodding her head towards the boombox. “You always pick out good music too.”
Mitsuki grinned, her fingers drumming along Aya’s shoulders. “Glad I could pick out the perfect CD to kiss your girlfriend to.”
She could feel Aya’s breath catch in her throat. She knew exactly what word caused that reaction. The room was quiet, as it just happened to be that split second in between tracks, before the electronic beat continued.
“Are we, uh. Girlfriends, then?”
At that, Mitsuki pulled back, just enough to see Aya’s eyes again. It was almost hard to do, like looking into the sun. She pressed her forehead into Aya’s and swallowed, taking a deep breath.
“Absolutely. I’d love to be your girlfriend.... Aya.”
They both smiled at the same time, already so in sync, and Aya pressed her lips to Mitsuki’s in a brief, chaste kiss.
“Then you’re mine, Mitsuki.”
Mine. The word bounced around Mitsuki’s head. She couldn’t help but press further into Aya’s arms, exactly where she belonged.
“Yours.”
