One day, a daughter and a mother were walking in Sefton Park. While they walked, the two came across a boy kicking rocks. The boy just so happened to be the son of their neighbors, the Starrkeys.
The mother took pity on the poor, illiterate boy, it was only natural, being a teacher. The mother compelled her daughter to interact with the young man. The daughter refused, finding the boy to be strange, but her mother would hear none of it. The daughter eventually gives in, going over to the odd boy.
The daughter taps the boy on his shoulder. ”Hello, I'm Melanie, what’s your name?”
The boy perks up, glancing away from his rock. “I’m Richard,” the boy said. He spoke so quietly that he was barely above a whisper.
Melanie didn't know what she and Richard could talk about. She look down at the rock near his foot. “Want to kick some rocks?”
So they decided to just kick rocks as they walked.
That night her mother invited the Starkeys over for dinner. Her parents and his mother discussed many topics that she didn't bother to understand. The kids sat across from one another at the table and stared at each other in silence.
The next day she came home from school and saw her mother and the strange boy studying. It suddenly made sense to the girl about what her mother was talking about last night. Her mother took to tutoring the poor boy; afterwards, her mother made her play with him at the park.
She didn't know it yet, but that boy was going to be her best friend. . .
