Chapter 1: A run in in the woods

Chapter Text

Ah, summer break. A time for a bit of relaxation, pool parties and doing nothing all day because the sun is so hot it's melting your skin. A time where you don't have to worry about keeping up your grades and dreadful school homework.

Hilda was very much looking forward to it. Afterall, she barely had time to do some of her adventures because of school or some event with the Sparrow scouts. She was excited to finally have time to spend with Frida and David. Unfortunately, her excited was short-lived once she discoverd that David was going on vacation and Firda was going to stay at her grandma's place for a bit. It was a little disappointing. Hilda couldn't keep the dismay off her face.

Evantualy, Johanna found out that Hilda's friends were going to be out of town and decided to plan a little surprise. A trip to Oregon! She heard about the beautiful scenery. From the parks, the national animals, waterfalls, it all sounded so relaxing. And the best part: it wasn't intolerantly hot there! A perfect place for some mother and daughter bonding.
Ofcourse, Hilda was delighted by the idea of traveling. It would certainly be better then to just stay in Trolberg. Plus, she would get to travel by plane for the first time! Her excitement was off the charts!

Tontu offered to look after their apartment while they were gone, meanwhile Twig and Alfur came along with them. Alfur insisting that they buy 3 plane tickets (even though he is invisible to other people). Johanna knew that she couldn't argue with him, so she simply agreed. Twig had to be in a carrier ofcourse, which Hilda wasn't too happy about, but rules are rules and Alfur was a sucker for rules. Well, atleast Hilda could get Alfur's seat ! So it wasn't that bad. Besides, two seats were much more comfortable then one. Alfur mostly relaxed on Hilda's or Johanna's shoulder anyway.

The plane ride went smoothly without any issues. Johanna mostly slept, so did Alfur while Hilda on the other hand was looking out of the tiny plane window at all times. She loved how she could see the clouds and the blue color of the atmosphere slowly disappearing. The only downside was that the seats didn't have much leg space. But otherwise, Hilda would say that she enjoyed it.

After the plane landed and Johanna got all of their suitcases out of the back, all of them decided that it would be best to rent a car so that they can get around the place easier. As soon as they got their rented the vehicle, Johanna started to drive to the first stop, a small park where she could let Hilda and Twig play for a while. In the meantime, she and Alfur would figure out how to get to their next destination.

After finding the place and route on the map, they all hopped back into the car and started to drive North. Hilda couldn't stop looking out of the window. The way all the trees and traffic signs passed by, the sun almost setting, it all felt so magical. Not to mention the fact how she would always point out a deer or a fox on the side of the road.

Ofcourse, it got a little hard to stay awake and despite the fact that Johanna encouraged Hilda to get some sleep, Hilda didn't feel like it, she didn't want to miss anything exciting along the way, so she convinced Johanna to play some roadtrip games. (Mostly trivia and yellow car) But that also quickly became too much as Hilda was slowly nodding to sleep. She felt her eyelids a bit heavy, her mind not focusing, and her drifting in and out of consciousness....That's when all of the sudden....

BOOM

The noise instantly jolted her awake. She could hear Twig also jerking at the sound and letting out a growl. Johanna and Alfur saying something on the lines of "don't worry, probably just a bump in the road".

Everything seemed fine for a few minutes as they continued their drive, Johanna thinking that it really was just a bump in the road. But it soon became clear that something was very wrong with the car. After passing a sign that read "Gravity Falls" (Alfur noted) the car suddenly started to elude black smoke and the hazards were beeping. Johanna stopped the car on the side of a street with not so many houses to take a look on what might be wrong.

She looked at the car engine and groaned. Although she had some knowledge on how to fix a car, this would take a few days. The engine was overheating and it seemed like something in the fuel compartment broke, fuel leaking all over the road. This might take more then a couple of days to fix, and whats worse that she didn't even have the supplies!

Johanna came back into the car to break the news, Alfur started to insist that they should find a place to stay for the night and look at the car in the morning. Even though Johanna didn't like that very much, she had to agree. All of them stepped out of the car insearch of a motel or hotel. They eventually found one not too far from the place from where they left their car. It was a little run down and was certenly no five star hotel, but it was good enough.

The person at the desk was quite helpful and checking in was not a problem. Their room was also quite nice. Even tough the air conditioning didn't seem to work. But Hilda quickly solved that problem by opening the window. All of them seemed to be ready to setle for the night, and so they did. It didn't take too long for everybody to fall asleep. The beds weren't exactly too comfortable, but it was okay.

During the night Hilda could hear some crickets outside the window...as well as some strange sounds....They sounded like the roars of trolls...which Hilda found odd, considering that they weren't in troll territory. Hilda shrugged and made the decision to go explore the place the next day.

Hilda woke up, feeling that her arm hurt a bit, it looked like she slept on it wrong, which wasn't too surprising. She yawned, slowly getting up and walking over to Johanna who was already having breakfast with Alfur. Ofcourse cucumber sandwiches were on the plate, Hilda's favorite. She happily had breakfast with them before heading to the door with Twig. She put on her boots and explained to Johanna that she wanted to explore the place a bit. Johanna didn't protest, she just warned her about not going too far and to be careful. Hilda nodded and opened the door and headed out.
-----------------------------
Hilda smiled as she glanced around the place. The birds were chirping, she could feel the wind rustling through the trees and slightly messing up her hair, the tall pine trees towering over the buildings, it was all so delightful to look at.

She took a step forward and started to head over to the edge of the forest.
„Just a peek“ Hilda whispered to Twig as she approached the bushes, Twig slowly following her steps. All of a sudden, Twig growls and sprints into the forest without warning.

„TWIG! TWIG WAIT!“ Hilda yells after him, she makes her way through the thick bushes and pine trees. She can hear the sounds of pine needles crunching beneath her feet as she runs after Twig.

Unfortunately, Twig is much faster and Hilda soon loses sight of him as he disappears into the bushes. She calls after him, slowing down and catching her breath. „Twig? TWIIG? TWIG? WHERE ARE YOU?“ She looks around and slowly starts walking deeper into the forest, still calling out Twig's name, hoping that he'll come back to her.

After five minutes of walking, Hilda stops as she hears rustling in some nearby bushes. She walks closer to them, hoping that it is Twig. Hilda hears something sprinting and suddenly sees something jump out of the bushes

„Twig!“ She cheered as Twig landed right in her arms. Hilda felt relieved that he came back. „There you are Twig! Good boy “ She smiled and turned back to the way they came from, that is until something else leaped out of the bushes. A boy, who seemed like he jumped after Twig, he whimpers as his legs tangle together and he stumbles to the ground, face first with an embarrassing thud.

Chapter 2: Silly Ideas

Summary:

Dipper finally reached the sidewalk, taking a stroll into town. Thinking about her. Wait, why was he thinking about her? That's weird. They just met. Dipper thought to himself. The only reason he wants to see her again is because of the deerfox and potentialy other paranormal creatures she might know. Right? Right!

Chapter Text

Dipper was walking through the Gravity Falls forest with a camera in hand. Looking to finally catch the Hide-Behind on video. For good measure, he brought two, plus some mirrors, bottles of water and the journal in his backpack. This time he'd be ready for it.

Slowly stepping out into a small clearing, he suddenly heard a noise from ahead....It sounded like...something was sprinting right towards him. Dipper stayed still, silently hoping that it was the hide behind (even though that was unlikely) or something interesting and not so dangerous....Hopefuly this won't be another gnome incident.

The creature ran towards him full speed and stopped near his feet to look up at him.

Dipper gasped, he never seen this creature before. It looked like a fox...but also a deer....a foxdeer? Dipper laughed at that thought, maybe he was spending way to much time with Mabel.

He slowly bent down not wanting to startle it. Something told him that not even the author has ever seen something like this. Atleast, it wasn't mentioned in the journal he had.

Holding the camera up to his face, he was about to press the button to take a picture of it when the white furball dashed back the way it came from!

Dipper groaned softly and started to run after it. He had to document this! Sure it wasn't the strangest thing he saw in Gravity Falls, but it sure was the most majestic!

Ducking under tree branches and hopping over small bushes, he was starting to loose the creature in sight, but something told him to pursway it. He seen it disappear into some bushes ahead and without thinking he also ran through them, slightly tearing his vest.

The bushes also slowed down the creature, this was it, this was his chance. As he was about to grab it the creature suddenly leaped out of the bushes. Dipper followed suit.

He jumped, slightly scraping his arm as his knees buckled and awkwardly tangled together. Stumbling onto the ground, landing face first against the forest floor covered in pine needles. And if that wasn't awkward enough, he heard a quite loud embarrassing thud.

Dipper helped himself up and met eyes with another person. Startling him and cousing him to immediately jump back. The girl's blue hair slightly flowed in the breeze and...and she had the creature he was chasing in her hands!

He fumbled and felt around to tug on his hat in embarrassment. Only to realize it wasn't on his head.

„This must be yours.“ Hilda picked up the white cap with the blue pine tree symbol off the ground. Taking a few steps forward before handing it to the boy, who muttered a sheepish "thanks". Twig growled as she approached him.

„ Why were you chasing Twig?“ The girl held the creature in her hands tighter while pouding her lips.

„W-what? Who?“ Dipper stutterd as he was caught off guard by her question, he then immidietly realized what she meant and laughed awkwardly. „Oh! I'm sorry...I just wanted to take a picture...eh...“ He scratched the back of his neck.

„Well, I don't think Twig likes it when strangers chase him just for a picture.“ She scoffed.

„Okay sorry, man! I just....wait, is he your pet?“ Dipper tilted his head.

„Yes.“

„Oh, he looks well....interesting....what species is he?“ Dipper asked curiously.

„A deerfox, they're pretty rare.“ The girl said with a straight face.

„...Deerfox“ Dipper muttered to himself. „Say, I don't think I've seen you around town before...I'm pretty sure I would have noticed a girl with blue hair and a...a deerfox walking around.“

„Oh...yeah, I'm just on vacation.“

„In Gravity Falls?“

„No, not exactly...Just my mum's car stopped working and now we're stranded here for a few days... I guess.“ She shrugged.

„...And where are you from?“ Dipper asked

„Trollberg. It's a city in the U.K. ...It was built on troll territory, that's why it's called that.“

„Wait, troll territory? You're telling me that there are trolls were you live?“ Dipper's eyes widened.

„Yeah, a lot of them actually....Then there's also Nissas, Marras, woofs, vitras...witches ofcourse deerfoxes...“ she went on

Dipper listened closely, his mind swirling. It sounded like another place simmular to Gravity Falls. The idea of another paranormal hot spot intrigued him. He wanted to ask more questions. No, he needed to ask more questions. He needed to see this place himself! This was amazing! And just his luck that the person from the place stumbled upon him here in Gravity Falls!

He listened to her talk about these creatures, her stories with them so amusing and similar to his own encounters with paranormal beasts on a daily basis. He laughed softly as she told him a story where she and her friends accidentally dug up some hibernating vitras and almost had them crushed.

As she finished telling her story, he suddenly remembered that he almost forgot to ask. „Soo....what's your name?“ Dipper smiled sheepishly.

„I'm Hilda.“ She smiled.

„Dipper.“ He noded.

„Well, it's nice to meet you, Dipper.“ Hilda chuckled as he held out his hand to shake hers. She looked back at Twig, who had seemingly calmed down. Then it hit her. „Oh! Oh! I'm sorry, I've got to go. I told mum that I wouldn't wander too far off!“ Hilda huffed, picking up Twig in her arms and heading back.

„Oh, then...uh, maybe....see you later?“ Dipper tilted his head.

Hilda turned back for a second to face him. „Yeah, maybe...I don't know how long it will be until mum fixes the car...So I might still be here for a while...I need to go, sorry....bye! “ She sprinted off into the same direction she came from.

Dipper was left there, standing. Alone with his own thoughts.

The giftshop bell rang in the Mystery shack as Dipper entered through the giftshop door. Fumbling around, he noticed Wendy sitting at the counter. She didn't even bat an eye at him, looking down at her cellphone. Dipper was about to say something but she beat him to it.

„Stan and Mabel are playing some game in the living room....Soos is there too if you want to join in.“ Wendy said, not even looking up at Dipper.

„Oh yeah....maybe I should....Thanks Wendy.“ He smiled and rushed over into the living room.

As she said, Mabel and Soos we're on the floor with a board game spread out in the center. Stan in his arm chair sipping his Pitt cola as he mostly watched them play.

All of them turned their heads as Dipper entered the room, before returning back to the game, almost like he wasn't even there.

„YES! YES! You landed on MY property! Pay up, sweetie! “ Stan cackled. He grinned when Mabel groaned and handed him some play money. When he took it from her hand she booed loudly.

„Hey, dude. Wassup?“ Soos turned his attention to Dipper.

„Dipper! You should totally join our game! We need another player to kick Grunkle Stan's butt! He's taking like, all of our money!“ Mabel chimed in.

„I can hear you, y' know.“ Stan grumbled.

„Heh, thanks guys. But I'm good.“ Dipper sat down next to Stan's arm chair. „I'll just watch you guys play.“

„AWH COME ON! You're not gonna let Grunkle Stan win this, are you?“ Mabel shouted

„Y'think Dipper playing would make a difference? Ha?“ Stan snickered.

„Oh, it definitely would! Unless you're cheating!“ Mabel yelled.

„Hah! Ya can't prove anythin'.“ Stan took a long sip from his drink.

The two of them went back and forth for a good minute. In the meantime, Soos turned to Dipper. „Dude, what is it? Is something bothering you, dude?“ He innocently asked.

„Eh, not really, man. I just...Have you ever seen a deerfox?“ Dipper asked.

„Oh, yeah dude!“

„Wait, really?“

„Yeah, it was one crazy dream, dude!“ Soos gigled.

Dipper sighed, pulling his cap over his eyes and trying to block out the argument that was unfolding between Stan and Mabel. Well, atleast Soos was going to listen to him.

„I met this girl in the woods. She said her mom's car kind of broke down here or something...And she had this really strange pet. It had white fur, looked like a fox but had antlers and hooves...like a deer. She told me it was a deerfox and is some kind of rare species.“ Dipper said, looking over at Soos for a reaction.

„Dude, I would like- not talk to strangers I meet in the woods, dude. They're usually a bit tad strange.“ Soos said. His expression staying the same. It didn't look like he took Dipper seriously. Or atleast he didn't care. „But what do I know, dude? Maybe you're as strange as them, and you can be little strange buddies, dude!” Soos gigled.

„...Buddies...?” Dipper frowned. It was clear to him Soos wasn't interested in the creature he just described. It was alright though. He looked back at Stan and Mabel, who were in a fight. Dipper considered Soos's words for a moment. Remembering that Mabel had Candy and Grenda...Soos had Wendy....and Stan..? Stan...got along with Mabel well...Atleast most of the time. Maybe making friends wasn't such a bad idea. Friends that didn't hang around the Mystery shack all day atleast. „Maybe we could.“ Dipper shrugged.

Soos just giggled „I am always right, dude!....usually....“

„Yeah....Well thank you, Soos...I'll be right back...might head into town to have an awkward social interaction...or something. I don't actually know.“ Dipper stood up and walked back to the door.

„Yeah! You go make friends bro-bro!“ Mabel lifted her head just to smile at Dipper for a moment before pauncing at Stan and trying to take the play cash out of his hand screaming „GIVE THAT BACK!“

Dipper didn't turn his head at that, he just walked out of the living room and headed outside.

The birds were still singing and Dipper felt the warm sun shining on him. Hopefuly he wouldn't get burned like last time. He sighed as he walked by the road into town, slowly but surely. Resisting the urge to go and explore the woods instead. If he was honest, he wasn't exactly sure what his plan was. He doesn't know her. He doesn't know where she's staying at. He doesn't know where to look. Hell, he barely remembered her name. Hanna? Hi- Hilda! It was Hilda. Still, even if he would magicly run into her again, what would he even say? Would she even be interested talking to him? He felt like his first impression wasn't the best...to say the least.

Right? Right!

Already walking through half of the town, he sighed and stopped for a break. Ofcourse she wasn't out. Why did he expect to magicaly bump into her again? But why is he hoping to see her again ? It's weird. He told himself. It's weird and creepy. Very creepy. He bit his lower lip and turned around, heading back to the Mystery shack.

„Welp, that was a waste of time“

Dipper didn't need friends. Besides, he had mysteries, books, TV shows...his family...maybe Wendy and Soos, they counted as friends. Who needs to go out and socialize? Not him. Not Dipper. He was fine. He was just fine. He tugged on his hat in embarrassment. This was really stupid. Trying to find a girl he met ONCE in the woods. Thinking that she'd be in town. Dumb. Just really dumb.

Opening the door to the giftshop, defeated, Dipper entered. He made a mental reminder that he was NOT going to go outside today for any reason. Besides, it was really hot. Too hot to be in the woods.

Entering the living room, he decided to just play Stay and Mabel's chaotic game.

Chapter Text

Yet another day quickly passed in Gravity falls. Johanna told Hilda that it might be a while until they can get back on the road again. In the meantime she was not allowed to wander to far off. Just into town and around the hotel, no further.

Eventually they ran out of things they could eat and Hilda volunteered to go and buy some groceries, wanting to take Alfur with her to make some notes.

As she started to head out of the door, Twig quickly managed to escape when she closed it. Hilda apologized for almost leaving him behind and went on her way.

Walking on the side walk, Alfur quickly read the list of things Johanna wanted them to buy. Pointing Hilda to where he saw the nearest grocery store.

„Annnd here we are! Thanks to Alfur, who guided us.“ Hilda chuckled playfully. Alfur looked up at her from her shoulder and smiled. „Ah, I can't wait to make reports about this place! It's exciting!“ His smile grew wider.

„Yes! And I can't wait to explore this place a bit!“ Hilda exclaimed. „...But let's not forget why we came here.“ She eyed the store.

„Oh right. We should focus on our main task.“ Alfur glanced infront of them.

„Getting those eggs!“ Hilda laughed. She opened the store door before realizing that Twig was with them. Crunching down to his level, she pat him gently on the head. „You stay here, boy. I don't think the store employers would be happy about a deerfox at the place.“

Twig looked upset and let out a growl. Hilda pat him again. „No worries, boy. We'll be back before you know it.“ She smiled brightly and entered the shop, leaving Twig on the sidewalk infront of the store.

He curled up into a ball beside the entrance and layed there, patiently waiting for Hilda and Alfur to come back.

______________________________

Dipper murmured something under his breath as he kicked a rock on the sidewalk. His feet fumbling around as he made his way to the local grocery store.

„Stupid Grunkle Stan.....making me do everything....again...“ He mumbled to himself, looking down at his feet.

Stopping in his tracks as he passed several houses, he noticed a little white furball resting by the entrance of the store. He lit up, quietly making his way to it as to not disturb it this time.

When he reached the store he slowly bent down to the deerfox and gently pat it's back. „Hey there buddy....Is...is your owner nearby...?“ Dipper smiled as the deerfox lifted his head to look up at him. He didn't seem to mind that it was Dipper again. As soon as he started to rub his back, his head settled back down and closed his eyes.

„Huh, you're a strange little thing...aren't you?“ He gently touched one of the antlers on the deerfox, continuing to gently rub it's back. Slightly surprised that the creature seemed to like him....well, not mind his company...at the vary least.

The door suddenly swung open and Hilda walked out. Twig immediately getting up and jumping to her side, leaving Dipper still crouched down.

Hilda eyed Dipper up and down before he got up and awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck....just start a conversation, darn it! He told himself.

„He-Hey!...What a coincidence bumping into you again...in this small town....“ Darn it! Dipper mentally punched himself for that, he tugged on his hat and tried to correct himself. „I mean that- it's nice to see you again.“ He chuckled awkwardly.

„Heh, yeah...“ Hilda softly smiled. Glancing at Alfur on her shoulder, who had a confused expression.

Dipper sucked in air. This is harder then he thought. No wonder he doesn't have any friends except for books and family members. He wiped the sweat off his forehead. „So uhm...Do you have any plans for today?“

„Heh, no...not really. Maybe just exploring a bit.“ She chuckled.

„Great! I had that in mind too!“ Dipper lit up.

Hilda took a step back and raised an eyebrow. That's when Dipper realized how dumb he sounded. „I- I mean that if...uhm...You maybe want to hang out...? With me? I-I know these woods...I could show you around orr-...“ Dipper scratched the back of his neck.

„Yeah, I'd like that!“ Hilda felt excitement wash over her. The thought of exploring this place intrigued her. She'd have somebody to keep her company and to guide her to all the exciting spots, so she immediately agreed to his offer.

„Hilda, I'm not sure mum is going to be happy about that.“

Dipper frowned hearing the voice. Glancing around himself and Hilda in confusion. Was he hearing things? Maybe it was the heat perhaps...„Who...? Who said that..?“

„It's just Alfur.“ Hilda replied. „He's an elf and invisible to most people...You have to sign paperwork in order to see him.“

„Oh yes, I could get it....for him...If he's your friend.“ Alfur said.

„...Where is he...?“ Dipper tilted his head.

Hilda chuckled and gestured to her shoulder.

„...O-Oh.“ Dipper squinted. „...and I have to sign...paper work...to see him?“ He asked.

„Certainly, young man. Us elfs are very careful to who gets to see us. If you're a friend of Hilda's, I can give you the papers.“ Alfur answered.

„Sounds good, man.“ Dipper shrugged. „So uhm...Do you want to like...meet up somewhere...?“

„Yes, when and where would you like to meet?“ Hilda spoke.

„Hilda, mum said that we can't go into the woods.“ Alfur tried to protest.

„Oh, come on Alfur. You can keep a secret, can you?“ She said playfully.

„No, I can't. It's no where on paper, and mum should always know where you are.“

„Well, what if I tell her that I'm going with a friend ?“ Hilda raised a brow.

Dipper jumped at the words. Did she just...Call him her friend? This soon? He felt excitement wash over him, but he decided to play it cool.

„If you tell her that, then I guess it'll be fine....“ Alfur said.

Hilda laughed and turned back to Dipper, expecting him to say something. He instantly noticed that she was waiting for him to speak first. Dipper cleared his throat and continued.

„...So...I was thinking we could meet up....right here at about 13:30? If it works for you...I mean...“

„Yeah! That could work.“ Hilda said.

They both smiled at eachother. The moment was nice. The wind slightly blowing through their hair and the sun shining brightly, lighting up any shadows present.

„Alright you two...Hilda, we better start heading back. Mum needs those groceries.“ Alfur interrupted the moment.

Hilda chuckled. „Oh alright.“ She motioned Twig over and started to walk away from Dipper, before she went too far, Hilda turned to Dipper to wave him goodbye.

„See you later.“ she skipped off.

Dipper raised his hand to wave back. „Y-yeah! Later!“ He smiled awkwardly.

Hilda soon turned to a corner off the street, now out of sight. Just now Dipper realized that he was sweating the entire time and probably didn't smell very good. Praying that she somehow didn't notice, since he already felt like his first impression wasn't great at all. Thinking that he should probably take a shower before he meets her again.

„Hi mum!„ Hilda said, taking off her boots at the door as she steps into their hotel room. „Alfur and I bought the groceries.“ She smiled

„Yes, we got everything on the list!“ Alfur added.

„That's great! Why don't you two play one of the games I brought with us? I still need to make us some dinner.“ Johanna turned to them.

„Uhmm...sure. Why not?“ Hilda scratched her neck. „Uh, mum?“

„Yes, Hilda?“

„Would it be alright if I went outside with a friend after lunch?“ Hilda asked.

Johanna looked at her a bit surprised. „A friend? What friend?“ She narrowed her eyes in suspicion. „Is your friend human?“

„Yes! Yes, he's human this time.“ Hilda chuckled. „Don't worry, mum. He's my age and he's offered to give me a tour around town.“

„And the woods!“ Alfur chimed in.

„Can I pleaaase go with him?“ Hilda gave her mum a smile and tried to make the cutest puppy dog face.

Johanna sighed and smiled. „Oh alright. Just be careful out there. Can Alfur come along with you too?“

Hilda glanced at Alfur who was still on her shoulder. Shrugging, Alfur said. „Well, I was actually wondering if I can play a game with you.“

„...and does this "friend" look trustworthy to you, Alfur?“ Johanna asked.

„He looks alright.“

„See mum? Can I go with him? I'll be fine by myself, I promise.“ Hilda placed the bags of groacaries on the table.

„I suppose you can.“

„YES! Thank you mum!“ Hilda cheered.

„Only after dinner.“ Johanna turned to the small kitchen in the hotel room and started to prepare some stuff.

„Ofcourse.“

______________________________

After they ate lunch, Hilda practicly ran towards the door. Putting her boots on and her hat, she waved Johanna goodbye and went outside.

Happily skipping on the side walk, she glanced around the small town. Noticing all the pretty houses and little shops. It didn't look much like Trolberg, but it still felt like a nice place. Hilda definitely loved the country side scenery.

She lit up when the small store came into view, already noticing the fact that Dipper was already there, waiting for her. He silently kicked some rocks under his feet, but as soon as he saw her, he smiled brightly.

„He-hey! I was starting to think you may not show up.“ He chuckled.

„And miss out on an adventure? Never.“ Hilda grinned.

Dipper smiled at the thought of going on an adventure. Maybe luck would be on his side and he would get the chance to show her some of the weird specimens of Gravity falls, he hoped. Well, hopefully nothing too weird, he wouldn't want to creep her out or scare her or anything.

„So where are we going?“ Hilda tilted her head.

„Huh? Oh, uh...Do you want me to show you around town first?“ Dipper asked. „...maybe after we could go to the woods...just for a stroll...if it won't creep you out...“ He cleared his throat.

„A tour around town seems nice.“

Dipper smiled. „Alright then, a tour around town it is....OWNWORD MATEY!“ He tried to do a pirate impression, immediately feeling embarrassed by it as his voice cracked.

Hilda laughed at that and Dipper felt his cheeks go red. He awkwardly chuckled and cleared his throat again before quickly changing the topic and escorting Hilda into town.

_______________________________________

Walking together, Dipper pointed out some specific buildings to her, such as the museum, the mall, post office, the Gravity Falls pool that wasn't that far away. As they walked pass an abonded looking convenience store, Dipper shrugged and mentioned how he once "fought off" two ghosts there once. Hilda casually told him that she once wrestled a ghost for a book. Dipper looked at her in surprise, but she didn't elaborate any further, changing the topic. He couldn't tell if she was joking or being real with him. Either way, he smiled and even laughed at the thought of wrestling a ghost.

Continuing the tour, he sometimes added his personal opinion and some jokes commentating their surroundings, he felt himself beam whenever Hilda would laugh at any of them. Giving him some confidence and trust in her. They soon began mentioning their family members. Dipper mostly complaining about how his great-uncle makes him work all day, how his sister Mabel was going through a boy crazy faze and nobody in this town really understood him.

Hilda noded to his word.

„...and what about you?“ Dipper glances over at her.

„Huh?“

„I mean...what about your family?“ He clarifies.

„Oh. Well, it's mostly just me and my mum. Also Alfur....you met him earlier....Twig....and then there's Tontu. He's a nissa.“

Dipper raised an eyebrow. „What is a nissa?“

„They live in nowhere space, basically any cracks and crevasses...any place where you can't see can be an entrance. They also mostly live in other people's houses...every house has a nissa. It's just that they don't always show themselfs.“ She explained.

„Wow, I wonder if the Mystery shack has one.“

„What?“

„Oh, uhm...The mystery shack. It's my grunk- ehem....great uncle's house...but he turned it into this tourist trap with fake exhibits and what not.“ He coughed.

„...That sounds pretty nice.“

„Trust me, if you have to work all day there for free...then you definitely wouldn't be saying that.“ Dipper chuckled.

The two of them walked a little further. Already getting back to the starting point, having done a loop around the town. Hilda looked at Dipper expectingly, waiting for him to speak up first. He noticed and immediately cleared his throat.

„So uhm...that was the town....Now if you want...we can...I dunno....maybe go out into the woods...find something, y'know?...little adventure...“ He gestured with his hands.

„Ofcourse.“ Hilda beamed.

„Ehem, okay then...uh...follow me. He waved at her to follow him.

Entering through some berry bushes, they pushed their way in at the border of the town buildings. Hearing the pine needles and twigs crunch underneath their feet, some birds singing and a woodpecker in the distance. Hilda looked up and admired the beautiful and tall pine trees, gasping at the sight. Noticing that she was impressed, Dipper proudly puffed his chest and grinned. Making her way in a lot easier by holding some branches and bushes in front of her, so she could pass safely.

A stump with a lot of mushrooms growing out of it, fallen trees, berry bushes, it was certainty a magical sight. Suddenly, Hilda stoped in her tracks as she heard something. Dipper immediately stopped too, to look back at her.

„Do you hear that?“ she asked.

The slow, calming sound of a waterfall in the distance. She could hear the rushing of water from here.

Dipper realized what she was talking about and smiled warmly.

„You wanna go see it? Come on, it's not that far.“

Nodding, Hilda rushed to follow him with stars in her eyes. Dipper looked at her expression and even though he already saw the falls a billion times, he couldn't help but feel excited too. The way she beamed and was aroused about this place, it made him feel all kinds of fuzzy inside. A wide smile spreading across his face.

Chapter 4: The falls

Summary:

„No, I will NOT be bringing her to the shack. And she will NOT be playing Stan's games.“ He grumbled. „But uhh, yeah, she's pretty nice.“

Chapter Text

Branches snapped beneath their feet as they wandered towards Trembley Falls, Dipper leading the way.

They soon passed onto a clearing that was leading to the edge of a lake with the huge waterfall just a couple of feet away from them. The water sparkling as it slowly rushed down, hitting the rocks bellow. Splashing tiny drops around, creating a little faint rainbow.

Hilda was in awe, staring at the sparkling water. She approached the border of the water, slightly sticking her hand out to feel the drops flick onto her skin. Turning around to beam at Dipper, who grinned as he strolled towards her.

„This is...beautiful.“ She smiled.

„Eh, it's alright I guess.“ A cocky grin spread across his face.

Observing the falls, Hilda quickly picked up on the rocks that were at the bottom. They were just about the distance she could jump. Grinning back at Dipper, she took a small step into the water and leaped onto one of them.

„W-wait! Don't-“ Dipper watched her make the jump, feeling slightly worried that she might slip off and hurt herself.

Trying to keep her balance, Hilda turned her head and smiled. „I'll be fine.“

Nervously, Dipper watched as she bounced onto another rock, this time being closer to the falls as she could feel the water sprinkling down on her.

„Don't hurt yourself!“ He yelled.

Hilda rolled her eyes as she was by now, standing exactly bellow the waterfall. The water rushing over her skin and hair, making her clothes slop against her.

„You're gonna get yourself soaked! “ He added.

Eyeing another rock ahead, Hilda leaped out. Unfortunately for her, this one was more slippery and as her already dank boots made contact with it, she slipped. Falling right into the water.

Dipper's eyes widen as he now also stepped into the water, ready to save her. „ HILDA! “ He cried out.

She shortly resurfaced, gasping for air and looking around for her black hat, that she immediately put on her head. Glancing to Dipper, a small smile suddenly cracked onto her face and she giggled.

Dipper relaxed a bit as he saw that she wasn't panicking by the situation. Still concerned, he grabbed a branch and held it out to her.

When she noticed, she laughed. „No, I'm good. Thank you very much.“

„You sure?“ He hesitated.

„Yes! The water actually feels quite nice. I like it.“ She replied.

„O-oh...“ He stuttered, placing the branch down next to him.

Giggling, Hilda slowly swam towards him, emerging out of the water soken wet. She squeezed the water out of her hat before placing it back onto her head. Slightly waving her legs around to get the water out of the boots.

„Are you okay?“ Dipper asked.

„heh, yeah.“

Dipper watched her clothing slump against her, as she tired drying off her hair. Her skin glistering in the sunlight, the little drops reflecting the light. Her blue hair getting into her face, but being slightly blown out of it, as soon as a soft summer breeze hit them.

For some reason, Dipper felt something warm in his chest as he heard her soft giggle once again. He couldn't help but stare at her, admiring her. Immediately scolding himself as she looked back at him with a puzzled look, realizing that he was looking for too long. Clearing his throat he stepped back a bit and was suddenly very interested in a nearby bush.

„Uhh...do I look weird?“ She gave herself a quick once over.

„Wha- no, no...I was just...wondering if you're cold...?“

Hilda stared at him for a second. „No, it's okay. Besides, the sun will dry me off in minutes.“ She sat down on the ground and glanced at the waterfall again.

Hesitantly, Dipper did the same, sitting down beside her. He shifted a little and tried his best to put some distance between them as to not make it too awkward.

Focusing on the flow of the water of the falls, Hilda spoke up. „This is a very nice town. It's a lot different from Trollberg but...I like it.“

„Heh, yeah...it's pretty nice once you...uhm...get over all the monsters and ghosts.“ Dipper chuckled.

Hilda suddenly perked up and looked him right in the eyes. „Monsters?“

„Oh yeah...this town...has some...uhm....weird creatures...to put it simply.“ Taking a stone, Dipper tossed it into the lake, the stone skipping a few times before sinking.

There's a moment of silence. Feeling like he said something awkward, Dipper curiously glances over to her, realizing that she is looking at something. He tilts his head in the direction and suddenly sees something not to far from them. A creature with a beak and a red flannel pattern on it's coat. Immediately recognizing it as the plaidypus.

He gasps and excitedly grins at her. „I've read about these!“

„What is it?“ Hilda asks.

„A plaidypus. Come on, let's get a closer look, don't worry. Those little guys are harmless.“ Taking her hand he gently guides her towards the strange creature.

The plaidypus notices them but barely moves. Dipper looks at him more cautiously. They both approach it and crouch down to get a better look.

„Oh no, it looks like it's feet are tangled in a fishing net.“ Hilda gestured to the plaidypus. „Poor thing!“

Getting a closer look, Dipper notices the fish net tangled around the creature's limbs making it unable to move. It looks directly at Dipper and makes a soft noise of distress.

„Don't worry, we can set it free.“ He picks up the plaidypus in his hands and ever so gently, tried to untangle the fishing net. „Hey, it's okay buddy. It's okay, we're helping you.“ He says reassuringly to the creature as if it could understand.

„Hold on, I can help.“ Hilda starts fiddling with the net too, eventually sliding it off and setting the creature free, she pockets the net.

„There you go, buddy.“ Dipper chuckles softly.

Placing the plaidypus back on the ground, the slow moving creature turns to them as if to say "thank you" before making it's way back into he woods.

„Awh, it's really adorable.“ Hilda smiles brightly.

Dipper smiles back at her, a proud look on his face. „Yeah, these little guys are my favorite. They're not aggressive or annoying. Even the author likes them.“

Smile slightly faltering, Hilda raises an eyebrow. „Who?“

„Oh! Uh...just an author I read from.“ Dipper scratches his neck, not sure if he wants to show her the journal that he had yet. He was about to speak up when Hilda beat him to it.

„Well....It was very nice of you to show me around the place, Dipper.“ She stood up.

„Oh, wait. You're leaving already?“ He asked.

„Yes, I have to get back to mum. She's probably a little worried I'm out for this long. You can walk me back though.“

„Uh, yeah, wait up.“ He springed up and they slowly started to make their way back into town.

The both of them laughed when Hilda mentioned how worried he was that she fell into the lake. Dipper rubbing the back of his neck, now feeling a little embarrassed about the fact that he probably overreacted. Very soon, the both of them reached the entrance of the hotel Hilda and Johanna were staying at.

Noticing that Johanna was outside fixing their car, Hilda called out to her and waved. Sprinting in her direction. Dipper stayed behind and watched from the distance.

Johanna immediately saw Hilda. „There you are Hilda!“ She lifted her head up from where she was fixing the car, eyeing Hilda up and down. „Why are you wet?“

„Uhh“ Hilda stuttered as she looked herself over, realizing that her clothes and hair were still soaked. „I feel into a waterfall.“ She fidgeted with her fingers.

Looking over Hilda's shoulder, Johanna noticed Dipper standing a few feet away from Hilda. Knowing that she was looking at him, Hilda decided to introduce him. „Mum, this is Dipper.“ She gestured to him.

Dipper stepped closer until he was right next to Hilda and awkwardly waved.

„Well, hello there, Dipper.“ Johanna smiled. „Nice of you to give Hilda a little tour.“ She winked.

„Haha, it's no big deal...honestly...“ He avoided her gaze.

„It was still very nice of you. I'm happy to see Hilda making a friend.“ She lit up. „Altough you shouldn't be dragging her through waterfalls.“ Johanna frowned a bit.

„It was my idea, mum.“

Looking back and forth between Hilda and Dipper, Johanna spoke up.„So Dipper, if you'd like to..maybe you can stay for a cucumber sandwich or two?“

„Oh, no thanks. I'm good. Really. I probably should head home....before it's dark.“ He chuckled, waving his hands.

„Alright then, bye.“ Johanna put her head down and looked at the car that still needed fixing.

„Dipper wait!“ Hilda rushed towards him before he could get too far. „Can we...maybe meet up again tomorrow?“ She asked.

„Oh yeah, sure.....Uhm....Can I come and get you? We can maybe hang around my place or...somewhere in the woods...? He asked.

„Yes! Ofcourse! Come and get me.“ She smiled.

„O-kay then, see you tomorrow.“ Dipper smirked, trying to play it cool as he headed back to the shack.

„See you!“ Hilda waved back at him.

The bell on the giftshop door rang as Dipper stepped through. Instead of Wendy, Dipper was greeted with Mabel who had both of her hands on her hips, frowning at him.

„Dipper! Where were you? I've been looking for you like...all day!“ Mabel squelled.

Startled by her voice, Dipper panicked and stuttered. „Ah! I was..uhm...I was just.....monster hunting!“

„Monster hunting?“ Mabel glared. „And you didn't think to bring me along?“ Her eyes narrowed.

Dipper waved his hands up. „Well...uhm...I...“ He sighed. „Okay, I was showing a new friend around.

Mabel perked up hearing this, focusing her eyes on Dipper. „A friend? No way. Did you actually make a friend?“ She asked, staring into his eyes. At that moment Dipper felt she was staring straight into his soul. „OH MY GOSH! YOU'RE SERIOUS! You made a friend?“ She suddenly squelled.

Frowning Dipper walked right past her and headed upstairs to bed. Mabel soon followed, rushing after him.

„What's their name? Are they nice? When did you meet? How did you meet? Can you bring them to the shack? We need a new player for the game! Please! Please! Please! She huffed.

„No, I will NOT be bringing her to the shack. And she will NOT be playing Stan's games.“ He grumbled. „But uhh, yeah, she's pretty nice.“ Dipper added.

Mabel's eyes widened and she let out a little scream. „AHHH! SHE? YOU SNEAK!“ She excitedly bounced up and down. „ OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! YOU HAVE A GIRL-FRIEND NOW?“

Her words became muffled as Dipper placed a hand over her mouth, glaring at her. „Keep it down! No, she's just a friend, besides, we met like literally yesterday.“ His face turned red.

Immediately letting go of Mabel in disgust as he glanced down at his hand and whipped it into his vest. „Ew, would you stop licking my hand?“ Dipper shuddered, as Mabel grinned.

Chapter 5: Breakfast interrogation

Summary:

„Don't forget to tie your shoes!“ Mabel yells after him.

It doesn't take long before a thud from outside is heard and Dipper's muffled "I'm okay!". Chuckling to herself, Mabel shakes her head.

„Yeesh“ Stan says, taking another sip of his coffee.

Chapter Text

Rubbing his eyes and yawning, Dipper enters the kitchen where Mabel and Stan are already seated at the table. Mabel bragging about how she made more of her very special "Mabel juice" and would be happy if somebody tried it. Grimacing, Stan told her off by saying that it looked like the stuff of nightmares. That drinking it should be a punishment of some kind. Torture even.

Glancing to Dipper, Stan grinned. „Oh look, Mabel! There's your lab rat. Why not give your juice to Dipper instead. He looks like he could use it.”

She excitedly turned her attention to Dipper. „DIPPER! Look what I made!~ Do you wanna try it?”

Taking one look at the weird pink liquid in Mabel's hands. A mixture of plastic dinosaurs, glitter, some doll's brush and small action figures in what looks like a mixture of bright pink shampoo, juice and God knows what else, Dipper immediately shakes his head, feeling sick to his stomach by the monstrosity that Mabel is holding. „Uhm, I'm good, I'll just have orange juice.“ He says.

„Awh, come on....You know you want it!“ Mabel grins, already pouring it into his cup.

Reaching out a hand to stop her, Dipper realizes it's too late and sighs in defeat. Taking the chair beside her, he looks down on his plate of pancakes as Mabel pushes his cup filled with the 'juice' next to him expectingly, grinning.

With a semi-grossed out expression on his face, Dipper takes a fork in his hand and starts playing with his breakfast. Poking the fork into the pancake and holding his head. Thinking of how awesome would it be to maybe hang out with Hilda again. Maybe, just maybe he could show her the journal. She would probably take him seriously. More seriously then any of his family members take him. Nobody here gets him.

„Dipper! Let's race!“ Mabel says, grinning. She picks her pancakes up with a fork and dangles it over her mouth, glancing over to Dipper.

Side eyeing her, Dipper continues to fiddle with his breakfast. „Not right now, Mabel.“ He grunts.

„Woah, what's wrong with you, squirt? Did ya get up on the wrong foot?“ Stan raises a brow.

Glaring, Dipper stops playing with the fork to look at Stan. „I'm just not in the mood.“

Out of nowhere, Mabel giggles. „Yeah, he's been like that since morning, I think he couldn't sleep because he was thinking about his girl friend!“

Stan looks taken aback by this. Looking Dipper up and down, a sly smirk appears on his face. „Girl-Friend?“ He cackles. „Yup, That explains it.“

Red-faced, Dipper looks down, avoiding Stan's and Mabel's eyes. The truth is, he did spend all night thinking about her. But let these guys know? Over his dead body! Besides, he was thinking about her in a totally platonic way, right? Right! Sure, Hilda is nice, she likes exploring, she's...pretty...But Dipper doesn't like her! Not in that way!

Narrowing his eyes, he glances at Mabel. „Yes! She's a girl, that is a friend.“ He grits his teeth and gives her a glare.

In response, Mabel covers her sly smile with her hand, looking back at Dipper with mischievous eyes. Glancing between him and Stan.

„Ah, so a friend, huh?“ He lets out a gruff chuckle. „That's also somethin', who knew Mr. Read a book and avoid social interactions all day has made a friend.“ Stan bites and chews his bacon.“

Angrily, Dipper mutters something to himself. Trying to think of something to say to change the topic. Unfortunately, before he can say anything, Stan spits out first.

„This better not turn out like another Wendy situation.“ He says with his mouth full, chewing loudly.

„Come on, guys! I'm over Wendy! And no, it won't. As I said, she's just my friend, we litterely met like two days ago.“

„That's long enough!“ Mabel giggles.

„Yeah, two days...such a long time.“ Dipper grimaces.

„T' only took me 42 hours to marry a woman once.“ Still chewing his bacon, Stan blurts out of nowhere.

Mabel looks back at him with an 'oh, my gosh' expression, but Stan doesn't elaborate. She keeps her eyes on him, waiting for him to continue, mouth agape, but he doesn't and just shrugges.

„...What?“

Stan gestured to his mouth, as he was still eating his food, although that didn't seem to stop him from talking before. After a minute, Mabel seemed to take the hint and turned her attention to Dipper again.

„Soo...When are you going to introduce her to me? I could use a new play buddy!“ Grinning, Mabel picked up her cup and took a long sip from it.

„Ahah, about that....“ Laughing nervously, Dipper tugged at his collar. „Grunkle Stan? Will it be alright if I go out for a couple of hours? I'll do my work after I come back.“

„Can I come with you? Please, please, please?!“ Mabel squilled.

„Come on sweetie, let the boy have this.“ Stan finished eating his food and walked over to get more coffee. „Sure, ya can skip work today.“

Frowning, Mabel turned back to argue but was cut off by Dipper, who basically had stars in his eyes. „Wait- Really? You're just gonna let me get out of work? Just like that?“

„AH! BOO!“ Mabel chanted.

Turning back to the table, Stan cackled. „Heh! Ofcourse not! There's a catch.“

Narrowing his eyes and taking a bite out of his food (finally) Dipper asked. „And what would that be?“

„You're going to give tours instead of me, tomorrow.“ Stan smirked.

Looking him straight in the eye, a bit disappointed, Dipper decided to agree. Atleast he'd get to go out with her today, like he promised. Sighing. „Okay, fine.“

Mabel's eyes flickered between the two before she finally spoke. „...Soo Dip? When are you going?“

„After he finishes the breakfast I made for him.“ Beating Dipper to an answer, Stan grumbled.

Taking the fork back in his hands, Dipper started gobling down his pancake, eating as fast as he could. Making sure he doesn't forget and accidentally drink out of his cup. He wouldn't want to get sick from whatever Mabel has put into his drink.

After he's done, he gets up, putting on his shoes, hat and vest before reaching for the door. Saying his goodbyes, he rushes out.

Chapter 6: Look-out point

Summary:

All of a sudden, she hits his elbow and laughs as she runs up the hill, through the bushes and pinecones, scattered on the forest floor. „Race you to the top!“ Hilda yells back.

Chapter Text

Taking a stroll down the highway, whistling to himself, Dipper takes the route that leads to the hotel Hilda is staying at. Not quite sure what his plan is once he reaches the place. Should he go to the front desk and ask what room Hilda is staying in? Or should he just look for them himself? Turns out he doesn't have to do either of those things as he notices Hilda's mom outside the building, still fixing her car, he assumes.

Skipping along, he finally stops infront of her and smiles. „Hey, uhm...I was wondering if Hilda could join me today?“ Dipper chuckled nervously.

Johanna lifted her head from where she was working, giving Dipper a quick once over before smiling warmly at him. „Sure, I'll go get her.“ She puts her tools aside as she walks inside the hotel.

A few minutes have passed and Dipper kicks a rock in anticipation. Feeling the excitement building in his chest as he can't wait to tell her about something. At first, he wasn't sure he'd want to share it with her, but realizing that Hilda considered him a friend and not to mention how adventurous she was herself, he changed his mind and decided to show her. When he heard the door of the building being pushed open, he immediately jumped to his feet.

The door swang open and out came the blue haired girl he knew, eagerly talking to her mother before glancing at him and waving with a bright smile on her face. She excitedly skipped over practicly jumping to Dipper's side and giving him a small playful punch to the shoulder.

Dipper took his arm and winced a bit. On boy, she was strong, he felt his cheeks burn a bit. Instantly snapping out of it as he let out a soft giggle and glanced back at Hilda, who waved her mother goodbye before quickly taking Dipper's hand, dragging him to...somewhere.

Barely paying attention where they were heading, Dipper couldn't focus on anything but the fact that she was holding his hand. The warmth of her skin against his. His fingers comfortably around hers. Maybe Mabel and Stan were right. Maybe he does like her. Perhaps it really is a crush. Just a small one. But there definitely is a vibe going on, Dipper thinks. Red faced, he looks at Hilda who is watching her step, Dipper needs to see any signs that she might be feeling the same way. Anything. But he doesn't find that in her expression. All he sees is a girl who is overly excited yet cautious about what she steps on. Avoiding the small bugs and critters in her path, carefully guiding Dipper to their destination.

Her eye suddenly meets his and she smiles warmly at him. That's it. Dipper couldn't handle it and quickly avoided her gaze. Out of nowhere finding his shoes to be more interested. A moment of silence takes place, before Hilda breaks it when they stop walking and she lets go of his hand.

„I want to show you something!“ Gesturing to her shoulder, she chirps.

Fidgeting with his now free hands, Dipper looks back at her. „Woah, really? I...I uh...Also want to show you something.“ He stalls. „But you go first.“

Hilda places her hand on her hips and grins. „Well, you remember Alfur, right?“ She asks.

Thinking for a second, Dipper's memory of the invisible elf soon springs to mind. „Yeah, yeah...The little invisible people, right?“ He nods his head.

„Yes! I and Alfur decided that you can sign the paperwork so you can see him!“ She beams.

„Oh, uhm....I don't have a pen...also where is he exactly?“ Scratching the back of his neck, Dipper looks Hilda up and down.

„Right over here!“ A small voice says, coming from Hilda's shoulder. Dipper notices what looks like several tiny floating documents hovering over her shoulder. Pulling something from under her hat, Hilda clicks the pen in her hand.

„Woah.“

Gesturing Dipper over to a log, the both of them sit down and Dipper is presented with several tiny pieces of paper. Hilda hands over the pen to Dipper, who clicks it a couple of more times for good measure before looking over the tiny papers.

„You just have to sign a couple of these. I'll read them out to you, full disclosure, agreements and disclaimers.“ The little elf's voice can be heard again.

„Woah, you guys have a lot of rules. Are all elfs like this?“ Already signing the first document, Dipper raises an eyebrow.

„Heh, well most of us actually. Elfs love paperwork! You sign it for everything! Even elf legends revolve around paperwork!“ The elf says cheerfuly.

„Man, you guys sound like a piece of work.“ Dipper chuckles. „Heh, I doubt that my great-uncle Stan would like you guys. He hates signing things that aren't related to him earning money.“

„Hmm...To me it sounds like your uncle is a piece of work.“ The elf scoffs.

Letting out a small giggle Dipper throws his hands up in defense. „Okay, sorry man! You're right...He definitely is.“

Out of nowhere, Hilda suddenly chimes in. „I'm glad to see you two getting along!“

Blushing, Dipper stalls a bit, slightly messing up his hand writing on one of the little papers. „O-oh, yeah....elfs...what a delight...“ He awkwardly chuckles. Knowing that he can't keep this up or he'll be more obvious then when he had his crush on Wendy.

„Yeah, I suppose we are quite nice company.“ Alfur looks up at Hilda and grins.

„Oh-Wow! I can see you!“ Dipper gasps. „...You're actually quite bigger then I expected. Also what's with the little hat?“ Poking a finger Dipper accidentally knocks Alfur's hat off.

Alfur instantly catches it and scoffs, placing the pointy thing back on his head and his hands.....or rather arms on his hips. „You know, it's quite impolite to do that.“ His little eyebrows furrow.

„Oh, I'm sorry.“ Dipper tilts his head. „Awh, you're still so tiny though.“

„Apology accepted.“ Alfur smiles.

„So like, do all elfs talk like they are professional business men?“ Tilting his head, Dipper fidgets with his hands for a bit.

„Why, yes. Most of us talk like this.“ Glancing back between Hilda and Dipper, Alfur smiles. „Hilda, can you remind me why you wanted him to see us?“

„Oh! Alfur, heh, I just thought that Dipper would be interested since he also likes adventures and creatures and such. Like me!„ Looking back at Dipper, she beems.

Avoiding her eyes, Dipper starts scratching the wood they are sitting on. Alfur looking up at him with a suspicious look on his face before smiling brightly. „I see. Two little adventurers.“ He giggles. „Well, I suppose you two could be very good friends.“

Chuckling, Hilda raises her hand and waits for Alfur to hop back on to her shoulder. „Heh, Alfur, we already are friends!“

„I'm glad that you two got to know eachother then!“ Jumping back onto Hilda's shoulder and giving Dipper a quick once over, Alfur smiles.

Scooting closer, Hilda looks Dipper right in the eye and smiles warmly. „Soo? What did you want to show me?“ She tilts her head.

„Oh, yeah!“ Remembering what he said, Dipper gestures a 'one second' and pulls something from his vest. A maroon colored book with golden edges that sparkled in the sun, on the cover printed a matching six fingered hand and the number three written above it, plus a small monocle hanging loose from the book. „I've found this book in the woods a while back.“ Dipper explains. „ It documents all the strange creatures of Gravity Falls....I just can't figure out who wrote it. It's basicly what I've been up to all summer, trying to decode this sucker.“ He shrugs.

Carefully taking the book in her hands, Hilds opends it and lists through it, Alfur coughing as she does so. „Oh, wow, It sure is dusty!“ The little elf exclaimed.

Running through the pages, Hilda gasps. „Woah, you have some pretty interesting creatures in this forest.“ She smiles and. looks up at Dipper. „You'be been decoding these?“ She says, pointing to a page that had some nonsense letters scribbled on them.

Proudly puffing up his chest, Dipper nods. „Yeah...Me and my sister are trying our best. Maybe one day, we could even find the author of the journal!“ With stars in his eyes Dipper looks at Hilda, anticipating her reaction.

„That sounds awesome!“ She beams.

A wide grin spreads across Dipper's face as he takes the journal from her hand. „You know....I wouldn't mind if you wanted to help me...“

„Really? You want me to help?“ Tilting her head, Hilda raises an eyebrow.

„Yeah! Yeah! That would be very cool!“ He beamed, suddenly clearing his throat. „Uhm...what I mean is...If you want to?“

„Ofcourse!“ Instantly agreeing, Hilda looks excitedly at Dipper.

Smiling warmly back at her, Dipper gives her a soft elbow. „Okay then, uh, I'd love for us to hang out again tomorrow, but...uh my great uncle is basicly making me give tours the whole day...So maybe we can get together on Sunday?“

„Okay, sure. Whenever works for you.“ She chirps.

„Oh, alright, well, if you want to take a look at the journal we can...maybe hike up to Look out point, it's just a little up here...And hey, maybe we'll be lucky and spot something.“ He hands her the journal, Hilda's hands running around the edges of the heavy book.

„Sure!“ Standing up, Hilda smiles brightly, waiting for Dipper to take the lead. When he does, she slowly follows him up the hill. Alfur writing down the scenery while they make it up the hill. Dipper pointing out a couple of woodpeckers and deers along the route they took. Walking together and discussing some unrelated things. Liking how much they had in common.

Pushing back a couple of branches and berry bushes, Dipper offers to take Hilda's hand once they reach the river, offering to help her jump onto the rocks. Reluctantly, Hilda accepts. Dipper feeling his heart skip a beat as she takes his hand into hers once again. Together they hop onto the first rock. Slowly but surely getting across.

When they were about half way through, Dipper's foot suddenly slipped. He yelped as he braced himself for contact with the cold water, possibly even the sharp rocks, when Hilda grabbed his arms, steading him. „It's alright, I've got you.“ Dipper looks back at her and she meets his eye.

„Woah, you've got to be more careful there.“ Hanging on to Hilda's scarf, Alfur speaks up.

„Yeah, yeah....Just....lost my footing there for a second....“ Dipper attempts to regain balence. Trying to ignore the fact that she was right behind him, holding him, keeping him from falling....No, he can't think like that. He can't get awkward with her. Dipper shakes the thoughts away, instead trying to focus on where he's going to step. Now, Hilda was slowly guiding him to where to put his foot. Doing as she says, but not liking it one bit. Great, just great! Now she probably sees him as someone in need of assistance. A pang of embarrassment washed over Dipper, he bit his lower lip as they finished crossing the river.

Letting go of his hands, feeling her warmth fade away slowly, Dipper dares to glance back at her. Taking note of how she watches the slow rushing water of the creek. Remembering she slipped and fell under that waterfall they were at yesterday. How she didn't seem to mind it at all. The way her hair shined in the summer sun. Shaking his head, he tries to remind himself to get a grip. Walking over to her side, he clears his throat.

„Okay, so...You still wanna go up?“ He asks.

Hilda raises a brow at him. „Yes? Why wouldn't I?“

Dipper awkwardly chuckles. „Heh, great, great...good...yeah...Just making sure.“ He cracks a smile.

Getting closer, Hilda tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. Only now did Dipper realize that she was a bit taller then him. For some reason it makes his heart flutter when she steps closer, not quite sure what he's expecting to happen.

All of a sudden, she hits his elbow and laughs as she runs up the hill, through the bushes and pinecones, scattered on the forest floor. „Race you to the top!“ Hilda yells back.

Standing there, dumbfounded, processing what just happened, Dipper immediately came to his senses and started sprinting behind her. „He-Hey! Wait up!“

Hearing the crunch of pine needles and leafs infront of him, Dipper attempts to pick up his paste.
Soon coming to the conclusion that the sound of her footsteps abruptly came to an end. Stopping to catch his breath, he looks around for any signs of her, trying to listen more closely. But the only thing he can hear is his breathing, the rushing flow of the water behind him, some woodpecker pecking in the distance and a few birds.

„Hilda?“ He uncertainly yells out, getting no response, he tries again. „Hilda? Hildaa? “ he looks around to no avail.

Is she trying to scare him? He asks himself. Or did something just happen. Dreading the thought that she might have ran into something in the woods. There could be all sorts of monsters lurking here. Dipper began to panic, still calling out to her.

He abruptly stops when he hears a twig snap behind him, like in some cliché movie. Turning around, his eyes fall onto a very big tree infront of him, taking slow steps to approach it.

Being only a foot away, Dipper screamed when something leaped out and tackled him to the ground. Landing on the cold ground, he screamed again, closing his eyes. And then he heard....laughter....Not just any laughter....

Hesitantly, he opened one of his eyes to see...Hilda. „I got you good! You should've seen your face!“ She chuckled.

Dipper forced out a small laugh. „Heh...yeah...You got me alright...“ He got up and dusted himself off. „But seriously though, that wasn't funny.“ Dipper frowned.

„I told her not go through with it.“ Alfur's brow furrowed at Hilda and he crossed his arms.

Her smile slightly faltered. „Oh, I'm sorry.“ She held her arm. „I didn't mean to scare you that much...“ Hilds glanced up at him a guilty look in her eyes.

Staring at the expression on her face, Dipper sighed. „It's okay...Just, these woods are pretty dangerous, you know? I thought that something happened to you.“

Slightly surprised at the statement, Hilda asked. „Really? You're worried about me?“

„Well, you know...I would forever have that on my conscious if something bad happened to you...I wouldn't be able to sleep at night ever again.“ Scratching the back of his neck, Dipper slightly chuckled.

"Oh...I'm really sorry again...“ Standing up, Hilda looked to the side, feeling a bit embarrassed that she would do something like that.

„It's okay.“ Dipper muttered, thinking of how to change the topic. „...Ah, hey! Only a couple of steps and we've reached the top!“ He says, pointing infront of them.

„Let's go then you two!“ Alfur waves his little arms. "Oh, I can't wait to see the view from up there!“ He chuckles, a hint of excitement in his voice.

„Yeah...let's get going, shall we?“ Taking a few steps forward, Hilda smiles at Dipper, who returns it.

„Yup, just a few more feet.“ Taking the lead he exclaims. They walk up the hill. Not even taking ten minutes to reach the top. Noticing that they could've just taken the route where cars drive up, Dipper facepalms.

„It's alright, I've had fun hiking.“ Placing a hand on his shoulder, Hilda attempts to reassure Dipper.

„Yes! Hiking sure is fun!“ Alfur backs her up.

Letting out a groan, Dipper looks down at his legs that slightly ached. But the fact that Hilda said she enjoyed the hike made him feel a bit better. Walking over to the edge, he smiled and sat down, gesturing for her to do the same.

When she joins him, he clears his throat. „Okay, so uhm...You have my journal, right?“

„Yes, right here.“ Handing over the journal, Hilda puts her hands on her knees and dangles her feet over the edge.

Opening it, Dipper lists in it for a few seconds before handing the book back to Hilda. „You can read through it if you want to.“

Excited, Hilda takes the book in her hands, and starts reading through it. Dipper watches her, trying to see her reaction to the text. After a moment she turns to him.
„So you haven't figured out who this author is yet?“

„No, no such luck. But me and my sister Mabel are trying. And well, as I said earlier, I would really appreciate it if you wanted to help.“ Dipper says.

„Hm, maybe you can also let me take a look at it! Us elfs are pretty smart.“ Alfur says, sitting on Hilda's shoulder.

„Yes! Alfur could definitely help!“ Exclaiming, Hilda marks the page she's at with her finger.

„That would be amazing! Could definitely use the help!“ Dipper lits up.

Nodding, Hilda goes back to reading about the scampfire, giant vampire bats, floating eyeballs and other horrific creatures written and drawn in the journal.

She soon reads a section for the creature called "Steve" and raises an eyebrow at Dipper. „ 'Steve'? Is he a type of giant?“

Dipper looks over her shoulder to double check what she's reading right now and nods. „Yeah, atleast I think so. The author didn't actually see his face.“

„Oh...“ She reads the part where the author describes an incident of the giant throwing a deer at him, she chuckles. „Heh, giants are usually friendly to humans...“

Dipper perked up at her words. „Usually? As if...You encountered a giant before?“

„Yes, I've met two, actually. One of them stepped on our house once.“

„Wait, stepped? Like destroyed?“

„Unfortunaly yes.“

„It was a little cabin in the woods.“ Alfur chimes in. „Not a total loss though, considering that mum wanted to move out anyway.“

Dipper whistles. „Sounds awful....Being crushed by a giant and all.“

„Eh, it turned out to be alright....although I do miss living like that. It was much simpler when it was just me and mum. But if we have never moved, I wouldn't have had such amazing friends.“ Dangling her feet, Hilda slightly smiles.

Lost in thought, Dipper remains silent. Thinking about her words.

„And...what about you?“

„Huh? Oh, I've never actually met a giant before-“

Nodding Hilda looks back down in the journal, skipping a few pages she didn't deem 'interesting'.

„'Trust no one'? That seems like a load of rubbish.“ Hilda scoffs.

Frowning, Dipper asks. „Sorry what?“

„Why couldn't you trust anyone? I'm sure not everybody has bad intentions.“ Hilda says.

The little elf from her shoulder leaps onto the pages and confirms. „Yes, you should never just assume everybody is bad or evil. There are plenty of good people out there to trust.“ He looks closer at the page. „Looks like this author was a bit too paranoid.“

Slowly nodding, Dipper agrees. „Yup, maybe he was...Yeah...“

Turning the page of the journal, Hilda notices that Dipper has made some entries in it. Starting to read his writing, he glanced back at her, looking at her face for reactions.

„Hm, so you're also here for summer break?" Hilda tilts her head.

Dipper shakes his head. "Yeah, me and my sister Mabel are basicly here all summer.“

Eyes slightly widening Hilda runs her figures along the page. „Really? All summer? How come? Aren't your parents going to spend time with you?“ She innocently asks.

Dipper sulks at the question. Hanging his head and fiddling with his fingers. Hating the thought of why they were away for the summer in the first place. Not having even told Mabel. He stays quiet for a moment, his mind drifting back to the memory of the fight he overheard. Why mom and dad wanted them so badly out of the house. He kept his emotions about the situation to himself up until now. Debating if he should tell Hilda. Afterall, he only knew her for a couple of days. But they were getting along so well. He's never made a friend this fast before, maybe it was too good to be true.

Sucking in some air, Dipper told himself that it wouldn't hurt telling another soul. Maybe it would even ease him a bit, give him some relief.

„...Yeah...Well...O-Our parents...I overheard a fight between them...I don't think...I think they're...splitting up...and...I don't...Don't know what to do...I haven't even told Mabel since...well...“ Dipper shrinks a bit. Feeling dread wash over him. Just the thought of his parents getting divorced made him feel upset and stressed. And Mabel. What about Mabel? If he can't take it well, how would she?

Feeling something warm on his shoulder, he flinched a bit, noticing it was Hilda's hand, he relaxed under her touch. He didn't look up at her, worried that he might cry and that's the last thing he'd want her to see.

Hilda gave him a worried look and tried her best to reassure him. „Hey, it's...I'm sure it's alright. Maybe your parents are just going through a rough patch...I'm sure it'll be okay.“ She attempts to cheer him up. To her dismay it doesn't look like it's working, Hilda inhales some air before brining herself closer to Dipper. „I know...I...Well, my parents are divorced.“

Dipper glances at her, slightly taken aback.

„I haven't seen my dad in years...and well, mum hasn't either....” She shrinks. „But...It's not that bad...Me and my mum spend a lot of time together...”

„Sorry to hear that.” Hanging his head, Dipper sighs.

„No, it's fine. Besides, I barely even remember what dad looked like....I'm sure that...that he loves me...” She slightly smiles. „Dipper, If the worst happens and your parents split up, remember that you'll probably be able to still visit...And you'll always have your sister.”

„Heh, yeah....I guess I will always have Mabel....” Dipper smiles warmly, but still feels a tear streaming down his cheek.

„Hey now...” Jumping from Hilda's shoulder onto Dipper's, Alfur attempts to comfort the boy. „ Hilda's right, you'll still have your sister. I'm positive that she'll always be there for you.“

Whipping a tear from his eye, Dipper murmurs. „Woah....thanks, you guys...“ He smiles sweetly at Hilda and Alfur. Stroking his shoulder gently, Alfur returns the smile.
„Don't mention it.“ Alfur chirps.

„Oh, speaking of my sister. She'd really like to meet you.“ Dipper whispers, his voice a little raspy.

„Ofcourse....Could I possibly come to your place sometime?“ Hilda asks, tilting her head.

Thinking about it for a second, Dipper nods his head. „Uhm, sure....“

The conversation slowly shifts back to the journal and the adventures Dipper and Hilda had. Complimenting drawings, laughing at what Dipper wrote down. Eventually, Dipper asked Hilda to sketch out Alfur and then if Alfur could write something about elfs. He agreed happily. The three of them joked around and drew until sunset, when they came back down and parted ways.

(Short chapter)

Chapter Text

„So, are you hanging out with Dipper today?“ Johanna asked, stirring her tea with a spoon while leaning over the kitchen counter in the hotel room.

Taking out her tea bag, Hilda took a few sips before batting an eye at her mother. „No.“ She replied. „He said his great uncle is making him work at his tourist trap all day.“

Taking a few steps towards Hilda and settling on the couch next to her, Johanna sighed. „Awh, well that's kind of of a bummer, isn't it?“

Hilda almost spilled her tea mug over when Twig lept out onto her lap, where he layed down. „Woah! Twig!“ She yelped, a bit startled. „Yes....A bummer...“ Gently stroking Twig's back, Hilda sighed. „I really gotten to like him, he reminds me a lot of David.“

„David, you say?“ Nodding, Johanna takes another sip of her tea. „Do bugs also come crawling on him?“ She jokingly asked.

Softly chuckling, Hilda continues to rub Twig's back as he slowly drifts off to sleep. „No, not really. Although mosquitos seem to love him.“

„Ah, I see.“ Johanna finishes her tea, slowly getting up from her place to go and settle the cup on the counter before she speaks up again. „Hilda, I've been thinking....It looks like it will take me a couple of more weeks to fix the car on my own, we might not even make it to our destination...So, I planned a small camping trip here in Gravity Falls in the meantime.“

Sitting up straighter, Hilda's eyes widen a bit in surprise. Startling Twig a bit, causing him to shift on her lap. „Really? Did you bring a tent?“ Hilda asks.

„Yes, we've got two tents!“ Johanna confirms.

„Alright then, when are we going?“ Hilda eagerly sits straight up.

„I'm thinking it would be best if we went on Friday, next week. What do you say?“

Hilda practicly jumps from excitement. Oh boy, does she love camping...and here? In Gravity Falls? That could certainly be an interesting experience. Slowly getting up from the couch, she excitedly skips over to Johanna and smiles brightly. „Yes, Ofcourse! I'd love to go!“ She beams.

„Great!“ Smiling back at her, Johanna takes the empty tea mug from her hands and sets it on the table. „We've got ourselves a deal then.“

„Uhm, excuse me, but are we sure we want to go camping here?“ A little voice comes from the table, where Alfur is sitting on a bottle cap that serves as the world's smallest chair. „I just think that it might be dangerous, I mean, who knows what kind of beasts are out here in the woods?” Alfur says, a hint of concern in his voice.

„Oh, don't worry, Alfur, I'm sure we'll be fine.“ Johanna reasures. „We won't go too far in the woods. It will just be on the edge, so if anything happens we could call for help.“ She smiles. “Thank you for your concerns, Alfur.“

Alfur proudly puffs up his small chest. „Don't mention it!“ His smile slightly falters as he keeps talking. „Altough, I'm still not so sure it is safe.“

„Hmm....“ Taping her chin, Hilda thinks for a moment before an idea pops into her head. „I've got it! What if I invited Dipper to join us? He spent most of the summer here so he must know about a good camping spot and how to stay safe.“

„You're right, maybe he could join us.“ Johanna smiles, and turns to look at the little elf. „Would that make you feel better, Alfur?“

„Well, it might.“ Alfur puts his arms on his waist.

„Then I'll invite him tomorrow!“ Hilda lits up.

Johanna laughs at her enthusiasm, really happy about the fact that Hilda managed to make such a good friend in a short time. „Okay then, that sounds good.“

Chapter 8: The Mystery Shack

Summary:

Gazing at the sight, Hilda noticed something on one of the shelfs. It was an entire stock of the same blue and white cap with a pine tree symbol like Dipper had. Dipper noticed her staring at it and shrugged. „Yeah, I've got my hat from here....Since the one I used to wear got eaten by a gnome.“

Chapter Text

Dipper and Hilda we're hanging out together at the edge of the woods. Reading through the journal he had brought, Hilda attempting to give some suggestions on how to crack some of the codes in the book. Not making any real progress, they eventually became kind of bored and were looking forward to other things to do. Remembering that Dipper said his uncle ran a tourist trap, Hilda asked if maybe she could come over to his place. Maybe he could give her a tour. At first, Dipper was hesitant. Afterall, he knew his family and didn't want to risk Grunkle Stan or Mabel scaring her away, but after she accepted to help him cracking the code in his journal Dipper couldn't say no.

They Made their way to the shack, Dipper leading the way. Hoping Mabel or Stan wouldn't make their hang out awkward.

Hilda let out an excited gasp when she saw the shack. Looking up at the wooden building, the giant sign that says 'Mystery Shack' and a smaller one to the gift shop plus a weather wane.

„Woah, is this where you're staying at?“ She picked up Twig, who was right by her feet, into her hands.

„Yup, also work at.“ Crossing his arms, Dipper rolls his eyes.

„It looks pretty cool, honestly.“ Hilda stepped out from the forest as they emerge onto the clearing where the shack stood.

Slowly, Dipper followed her as she approached the shack. „ Er, maybe I could give you a personal tour around for free? You know, since you're my friend and all...“ He scratched the back of his neck.

Hilda's eyes widened with excitement. Turning around to look at him. „Really? You could do that?“

„Mhm.“ Putting his hands into his pockets, Dipper nodded with a sly smile. „You just can't tell my uncle.“

„Uhh, I don't know...I don't want to get you in trouble.“ They were now standing infront of the shack, facing eachother.

„Awh, come on, it's on the house!“ Dipper waved his arm. „Besides, you're my friend! I'm sure It'll be fine.“

Hilda gave sheepish smile. It was really sweet that he'd basicly give her a tour for free, but at the same time she didn't want to get them both in trouble. But maybe it was alright, afterall he basicly lives here for the summer. So they probably would be okay.

„Hey, dudes!“

„Ahh!“ Hilda and Dipper gasp.Startled, they both turn around in search of the voice. Right behind both of them, was a man wearing a dark green shirt with a question mark, shorts, and a cap on his head.

„Soos! You scared me!“ Dipper frowned.

Glancing between Dipper and the big man infront of them, Hilda felt relieved that Dipper seemed to know him.

The man giggled. „Heheh! Oh, sorry dude, I didn't mean to scare you two!“ His eyes linger on Hilda for a moment before smiling warmly. „Who'se this blue-haired one, dude?“

Dipper steps a bit closer to him and points at Hilda to introduce her. „Soos, this is Hilda. She's my friend.“

Soos nods with a smile on his face, extending a hand for a high five, which after a couple of seconds, Hilda returns. „Nice to meet you, Tilda!“

„Hilda.“ Crossing his arms in annoyance, Dipper's brow furrows.

„Heheh, So you and Dipper are like...Buddie-Buddies?“ Ignoring Dipper's correction, Soos asks.

Smiling, Hilda answers. „Yes, you could say that.“ She glances at Dipper, who immediately avoids her gaze and instead rubs the back of his neck, chuckling awkwardly.

Noticing the white fox looking animal in Hilda's arms, Soos kneels down to pat the head of the creature. „Well aren't you a little cutie?“ He then looks up at Hilda and asks. „So is this your pet wolf- jackolope- creature, dude?“

„Oh, this is Twig! He's a deerfox.“ Hilda couldn't help but crack a smile at the silly question. Holding Twig a little tighter as Soos continues to rub Twig's head, which the deerfox seems to enjoy.

All of a sudden, Soos shoots up and whimpers a bit, holding his finger. „Ow! Dude!“ He yelps.

Dipper and Hilda look at eachother in confusion before glancing back at Soos, Hilda asks. „What's wrong?“

„Oh, nothing dude. Just that the little antlers on your fox are a bit sharp.“ Still clutching his hand, Soos shudders.

„Awh, I'm sorry about that, sir!“ Letting Twig go on the ground, she rushes over to Soos in concern.

„Don't worry Dawg, I'm okay! Just...need to remember not to touch your little fox-creature's antlers.“

„Are you sure?“ Putting Soos's hand in hers, Hilda tilts her head.

„Yeah girl dude!” He laughs. „It's just a scratch, don't worry about it!”

Examining Soos's hand, Hilda notices that he was right. It was only a small cut that wasn't even bleeding. Still, she felt kinda guilty for it, even though it definitely wasn't her fault. She looked down at Twig, who was sitting at her feet. When she met his gaze, he tilted his head, unknowing of what happened.

Crouching down to him, Hilda started to gently stroke his back. „Again, I'm sorry sir. Twig didn't mean to-“

She had been cut off by another giggle. „Hey, come on dude. I said not to worry about it. Heheh, geez you're so nice! No wonder Dipper likes you!“

Hearing that last part, Dipper perked up a bit. Knowing that Soos probably only meant it as a friend, besides, there was no way Soos could already know that Dipper had a thing for her. Still, he felt a bit flustered at the statement and he soo wanted to shove Soos for that one. But he couldn't, so instead he just wished Hilda wouldn't interpret it in another way.

It seemed like luck was on his side, because she didn't. Hilda simply smiled at the statement but didn't say anything else. Dipper let out a sigh of relief.

„So, uh? What are you dudes doing here?“ Soos asked, his attention at Dipper.

Laughing a bit awkwardly, Dipper leaned on the shacks exterior. „I want to give Hilda a little personal tour of the Mystery shack! ...Er, You won't tell Stan, will you?“

„Nah, dude go ahead.“ Soos smiled. „Stan is probably in the living room watching TV. As far as I know anyway.“ He says, wanting to be somewhat helpful giving this information.

„Heh, thanks Soos.“ Dipper suddenly takes Hilda's hand and leads her to the front door from where Grunkle Stan gives tours. Twig slowly following their footsteps.

„Have fun, dudes!“ Soos yells at them, waving.

------------------------

Together, they push the door open and go inside. Hilda takes a few seconds to look around, she looks over at Twig and asks. „Uh, is it okay for Twig to come inside? I don't want him making a mess or anything.“

Hearing her worry, Dipper smiles. It was honestly pretty nice of her to be this considerete. „Huh? Oh, no...It's fine, he can come in.“

Twig takes a couple of steps infront of the two before doing a couple of laps around Dipper's legs and licking one.

„Heh, he has really taken a liking to you.“ Hilda chuckles.

„Yeah, I guess he has...“ Dipper smiles, the fuzzy feeling returning to his chest. What are the chances he met a girl with the exact same interests, paranormal expierences, and a strange anomily of a creature as a pet. Not to mention she was smart, kind, considere....also kind of pretty...Dipper snaps back into reality at that thought. Nu-uh, no, the last thing he needs is another Wendy situation again! But he can't help it. Hilda was just so cool. Only if she looked at him the same way. Only if she liked him too.

„Dipper?“

„What? Yeah?“

„Is everything alright? You've just been...kind of standing there...“

„O-oh! Yeah, I'm okay. So uh...“ Dipper stammers before waving his hand. „Let's get on with the tour, shall we?“ A big dumb grin spreads across his face.

Hilda laughs a bit as she follows him with Twig high on their heels.

Leading her through the various attractions and taxidermies, Dipper does a mockery impression of Stan as he explains what the attraction is supposed to be and the little story behind it. Making sarcastic remarks and jokes. Trying to make it as obvious as possible that all of the stuff on display is fake. Briefly after stopping by the sascrotch, Twig starts growling at it. His little fox teeth showing as he was ready to pounce at the taxidermy.

„Woah, there!“ Dipper laughed at the situation.

„Twig, come on boy! It's not real. It won't hurt you.“ Holding back a chuckle, she attempted to pick up Twig into her arms, but he resisted. Insistingly growling and letting out little barks at the attraction.

„Heh, I guess he hates the fake attractions as much as I do.“ Folding his arms, Dipper joked.

„You don't like these?“ Hilda raised an eyebrow. „I don't know, I think it's actually pretty cool that your uncle took the time to make them individually. They look like they taken a long time to create.“ She points out.

Looking to the side, Dipper suddenly gets the feeling that she might be right. Afterall, Stan did spend an ungodly amount of time stitching the taxidermies together. „...I guess you're right...But that doesn't really change the fact that he's lying about everything.“

Putting her hands over Twig to get him to stop growling, Hilda shrugs. „Yeah, it's still pretty bad if he lies about these creatures existing. But if you ask me, it looks like your uncle is pretty talented.“ She finally lifts Twig up in her arms and attempts to coax him.

„...Maybe...” Dipper scratched the back of his neck, awkwardly glancing back at Hilda. Since it was the end of the tour, Dipper tipped his hat and began walking towards the gift shop door. Looking back behind him to make sure she was following him.

Finally getting Twig to turn away from the taxidermy, Hilda scooped him up in her arms and followed Dipper out the door. Twig let out a little growl in protest.

„Come on boy, it wasn't real. Why are you acting like this?“ She skipped pass Dipper into the gift shop. Stopping to look around as Dipper closed the door behind them.

In the gift shop there were a hell lot of T-shirts with phrases like "I saw a cool stump at the Mystery Shack" as well as bumper stickers, snow globes and an unholy amount of keychains.

It looked like Wendy either took a break or didn't show up to work at all today. Since the place was completely empty except for the three of them and Soos who was probably still outside.

Hearing that, Hilda perked up a bit. Feeling like there was some real wild story behind his comment. But at the moment she decided to ignore it and instead stepped closer to the shelf with the caps. Taking one in her hand, she replaced it with the black hat she always wore. Turning back to Dipper with a grin. „Look! Now we look like twins!“

„Yeah, I guess we do...“ Dipper avoided her eyes. A sweet smile spreading across his face. „Hahah, well...How did you like the tour?“

„Ah, It was pretty interesting.“ She beamed. „Altough, I did not like the UniCorpse at all.“ Hilda shivered. Twig growled a little at the mention of the attraction.

„Yup, nothing is weirder then my uncle's imagination.“ Dipper agreed. Sneakily he looked back at Hilda's face and a thought came into his mind once he realized that they were completely alone at the place. „Uhh, hey! Since nobody is here to watch over...Maybe you could take one souvenir?“

„Really? You'd be alright with that?“ Raising an eyebrow, Hilda asked hesitantly.

Waving his hand dismissively, Dipper let out a little tsk. „It's one the house. I'm sure no one will notice if one souvenir goes missing. So don't worry about it.“ Waiting for her to pick something, he smiled.

Taking the cap off and placing it back on the shelf, Hilda gazed around the place, eyes wide with excitement. „Oh, wow...“ She inspected everything that was in the shop. Her eyes eventually setting at a small snow globe with a small version of the shack's building in it. Letting Twig go, she picked up the little globe in her hands and gave it a good shake, glancing back at Dipper. „Are you sure it's okay if I take it?“

„Yeah, go ahead.“ Dipper confirmed.

Watching the fake snow settle around the little shack, Hilda smiled brightly. „Woah, thank you!“

Rubbing the back of his neck, Dipper gave an awkward chuckle in response. His heart fluttering at her words. „Heheh, y-yeah, ofcourse! Any...Any time.“

It looked like Twig was aware of his emotions. The deerfox hopped from Hilda's side right infront of Dipper, tilting it's head while making a confused little squeak. Slightly backing away from him, Dipper glanced up at Hilda to see if she noticed that he started stuttering, but it seemed that the blue haired girl was too preoccupied with her new snow globe to notice anything different in his behavior.

Feeling his face start to sweat, Dipper decided to break the now-awkward silence that took over. „S-so Uh, the tour is over...We should probably get out of here before my uncle comes out of the living room....“

„Oh, yes. I don't want to get you in trouble.“ Placing the snow globe in her small bag, she followed Dipper out the door of the Mystery Shack.

Stepping out the three of them saw that the handyman was no where in sight. Assuming that Grunkle Stan already called over Soos to fix something, Dipper sighed and was proud of himself for successfuly getting away with something like this.

Taking out her new snow globe out of the bag and staring at it for a few seconds, Hilda raised her voice. „I think I should repay you someday...“ She gazed down under her feet where Twig was. Crouching down to his level, she gave him a small pat on the head.

„What? Oh, pfft....come one that's not necessary. Think of it as a gift from a friend!“ Dismissing her offer, Dipper smiled.

„Well then, I'll offer you a gift in return. It's only fair.“ Hilda shrugged.

„No, I promise you, no one is gonna miss that snow glo-“ He was suddenly cut off when he heard a familiar hyper voice from behind him.

„Hey, doofes!“ It was Mabel, she purposely stood really close to Dipper with a big grin on her face. Her grin widening when she saw how startled Dipper was.

„GAH!“ Nearly falling down, Dipper managed to steady himself. Turning to face her. „Mabeel...Why did you do that!?“ His voice cracked a bit, immediately shrinking back. Feeling a bit embarrassed that that just happened infront of the girl he kind of liked. Just his luck, Dipper facepalmed.

Completely ignoring her brother's question, Mabel let out a gasp and excitedly bounced up and down. „Oh my gosh! Ohh my gosh! Stop everything!“ She paused for a second eyeing the deerfox under Hilda's feet. „What. Is. That?“

Hilda smiled as Mabel stared at the deerfox bellow her feet. Stepping aside she gave an answer. „Oh, this is Twig! He's a deerfox.“

Mabel's eyes basicly had stars in them as she looked the creature up and down. „Ohhh he's sooo cuteee! AAH! Can I pet him? Please, please, please?“ Putting her hands together, she pleaded. Pauting her lips and batting her big eyes at Hilda.

„Ofcourse. Go ahead. He's friendly.“

„EEK!“ Letting out an excited squel, Mabel hopped over to Twig and began scratching his back, Twig leaning into her touch.

„You're the most beautiful creature I've ever seen.“ Mabel whispered to Twig, who was now rolling on his back, expecting her to give him a belly rub.

After a moment, Mabel lifted her head to look back at Hilda, raising an eyebrow. „Soo...are you Dipper's friend? I'm Mabel by the way. His sister!“

„Uh, I'm Hilda. And yes, I'm a friend of Dippers.“ She glanced back at Dipper with a smile. But it seemed like Dipper found the woods surrounding them more interesting at the moment.

„Woah, pshh, thank gosh...I was starting to think that Dipper will be a lonely nerd forever. Phew!“ Raising her hand to whipe her forehead, Mabel exclaimed. „I love your hair by the way. Giirl, you are working that blue color!“

Frowning, Dipper didn't say anything.

„Awh, thank you. I like your sweater.“ Hilda smiled warmly at the compliment.

„Hehe, thanks. Made it myself.“ Mabel said, continuing to rub Twig's belly. „So you talk a little differently, are you like...Canadian?“ She tilts her head.

Hilda's eyebrows shot up at that comment. Looking at Mabel a bit amused. Cracking a smile she chuckled. „No...no. I'm from the U. K.“

„Oohhhh, that explains it.“ Mabel giggled. „Sooo? What's a girl like you doing all the way here in the U.S. in the middle of nowhere...?“

„Just a vacation. You know, since it's summer break.“ Hilda replied.

„Oh! Me and Dip-Dip are also on vacation here! What a coincidence!“ Twig got up for a moment to lick Mabel's face. Which she respond by giggling. „Heh, oh yeah I like you too!“ Mabel scratched the place behind his ear. „What city are you from?“

„Trolberg!“

„Wow that's a cool name. Do like...trolls live there?“ Tilting her head to the side, Mabel raised an eyebrow.

„Actually, yeah. The whole city was built on troll territory. That's why there's a big wall around it. To keep the trolls out.“ Placing her hands on her hips, Hilda explained.

Raising her head to look at Hilda, Mabel had a question in mind. „Huh, isn't that kind of dangerous?“

„Well, so is a life of an adventurer.“ Hilda winked.

Satisfied with her answer, Mabel smiled brightly. But all of a sudden she gasped and a mischievous grin formed on her face, showing her braces. Standing up, her eyes flickered between Hilda and Dipper. Letting out a small chuckle she spoke to Hilda. „Wait a minute....So you like adventure, huh?“

Unsure of where this was going, Hilda nodded. „Yes?“

Grinning, Mabel instantly turned her attention to Dipper. „...and you like adventure too!“ She waved her hands in his face. Before Dipper could reply she excitedly jumped up and exclaimed. „Whaat is happening here?“ Doing a little wave with her hands, she expectingly stared at them both.

Immediately realizing what she was implying, Dipper's whole face turned as red as a tomato. Pulling his cap over his face, he shrunk back and avoided Mabel and Hilda's gaze.

It quickly came to Hilda as well. For some reason she felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment, her eyes settling on Twig, not daring to look up. Why?Why? Why did she feel embarrassed? It's not like she had anything going on with Dipper. He was nothing more then a friend to her. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake off the weird feeling that was starting to grow with Mabel's statement. Ofcourse, Dipper was sweet and nice...giving her a free tour and a gift...But friends do that! Hilda also gave Frida and David presents sometimes, both of them only being her friends.

She waved her hands defensively. „No, no...You got the wrong idea...“

Being at a loss for words, Dipper was sorta glad that Hilda spoke up to deny it. Even though he felt a small pang of disappointment at her words. But he didn't argue with it, it made sense for her to only see him as a friend.

„Awh, okay...“ Mabel's voice didn't hide the disappointment, but her tone quickly changed into something more cheerful. „It's alright. All you two need is some time!“ She playfully pulled Hilda closer. Placing a hand on her shoulder. „Remember, if you need to plan a way to ask this fine gentlemen out, just give me a call and Bam! I'll take care of everything, sister!“

„Mabel!“ Dipper's brow furrowed.

Laughing nervously Hilda nodded. „Thanks for that...but uh, that won't be necessary...“

„MABEL! WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY OFFICE!?“ A gruff voice yelled from inside the house. Inturupting their rather awkward conversation.

Glancing back at the shack's door, Mabel turned to Dipper and Hilda again, giving Twig one last little pat on the back. „I'll deal with it.“ Her small legs hurried back inside but not before shouting. „See you two love birds later!“

Dipper let out a sigh of relief as the Gift shop door closed. Nervously rubbing his hands together, he gazed back at Hilda in a somewhat shy demeanor.

All Hilda did was clear her throat without saying anything. The atmosphere quickly became real awkward.

Rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, Dipper pointed to the woods ahead. „Do you wanna uhh...get out of here? Get some fresh air?“

Nodding Hilda replied. „Sure.“

Chapter 9: Hopefully no consequences

Summary:

The walk back to Hilda's hotel was dead silent. None of them exactly knew what to say to eachother. It did cross Dipper's mind a couple of times to keep apologizing, but when he saw that Hilda was zoning out, glancing all around them, he decided it was probably best to drop it. No amount of sorry would fix this

Chapter Text

Walking through the woods, Dipper was reminded of their earlier adventures. The Mystery shack slowly disappearing from sight as they ventured deeper. The tension was palpable, as not one of them dared to speak to eachother. Which all things considered was probably a good thing. It was pretty hard to pretend Mabel didn't just say all that.

Following their steps and scaring every other living creature in the way, Twig hopped right next to Hilda. Giving her a look and tilting his head slightly to the side.

„What is it, boy?“ A confused expression spread across Hilda's face. Glancing at Twig as he suddenly blocked her path.

Trying to move past him, Twig sunk his teeth into her jacket and started pulling back towards the shack.

„Twig! Cut it out!“ Not budging, Hilda stood her ground, eventually causing Twig to let go of her jacket and letting out a small whimper. Turning to face the way they came, he gave a little nod as if he wanted her to follow him.

„What's wrong?“ Dipper glanced over his shoulder to look back at them both.

Moving forward, Hilda shrugged. „I don't know. Twig is acting a bit weird.“

Not budging, Twig stayed in place, still as a statue.. It was quite clear that something was bothering him but neither Hilda or Dipper could figure out what it was.

Dipper barely payed any attention to Twig at this point. Lost in thought about how Mabel embarrassed him earlier. The little deerfox acting a little strange was his least concern at the moment. Hopefully their encounter with Mabel wouldn't ruin anything between them. Hating the idea of making everything awkward or worse, completely drive Hilda away from him. Honestly he would much rather brush off Mabel's words as her joking or that she has no idea what she's talking about but it was hard to do so, as the truth was, he did like her. It was hard not to. A girl that happened to have interest in the paranormal, having encountered it before, smart, pretty...She was just so cool. Just as cool as Wendy. But this time she was his age! This time, maybe it could work. Perhaps he had a chance here?

He shook his head, snapping himself out of those thoughts. Feeling rather pathetic next to her. What was he thinking? That she'd ever like him back? No, he didn't have that kind of luck. Ofcourse, she only saw him as a friend. There is nothing between them. Why confess this early and potentially scare her away? This time, he's going to keep it for himself and there's nothing Mabel or anyone can do to make him change his mind. Sighing, Dipper turns back to face Hilda, who is still trying to get Twig to move along.

Softly growling, Twig cautiously followed Hilda. Taking a quick glance at their surroundings before his hoofes disturbed the ground by skipping forward, right in front of Dipper. Tail trailing down to the ground and his ears on high alert.

Dipper's eyes followed Twig for a good moment before glancing at Hilda from the corner of his eye. She was just a foot or two behind him, keeping pace. Deciding to strike up a conversation again, he cleared his throat.

„Ehem, so....How's your car? Is it- When will it be fixed?“

Meeting his eye, Hilda pondered the question a bit before speaking. „It looks like it will take another week or two....But it's fine since we already have stuff to do here.“

Nodding, Dipper kicked a pinecone that was in his way. It scurried into the bushes causing Twig to jump a little.

„Oh! I completely forgot to ask you!“ Hitting herself in the head, Hilda playfully grins at him.

Raising an eyebrow at what she was about to say, Dipper stopped walking.

„Me and my mum are going camping on Friday! And...I was wondering if maybe you wanted to join us?“ Hilda smiled ear to ear as she waited his response.

„Wh- Wait....Really? You want me to join you guys?“ Dipper instantly lit up, he gave a quick chuckle. „I- Yeah! Ofcourse! That...That sounds like a lot of fun!“ He coughs, hoping that he didn't sound desperate or overly excited about her offer.

„Alright then, I'll be sure to tell mum!“ She grins.

Just ahead of them, a squirrel passed, hopping across the path as they moved through the forest. The cold breeze whistling through the trees. It was quite a quiet scene. The only noise being the occational song bird or woodpecker.

Grabing a branch, Dipper swung it at some berry bushes to make a clearer path for the three of them. Stopping himself when he heard a small whimper behind him. It was Twig, racing towards him.

„Gah!” Throwing the stick aside from surprise, Dipper jumped back when Twig leaped infront of him. Intensly starting at the berry bush Dipper just swated at. Positioning himself rather defensively, ears flopping down, his jaw clenched, the sharp teeth inside showing all while growling.

Rolling her eyes, Hilda came closer to Twig, passing Dipper as she did so. Glancing over the bushes ahead, trying to make out what Twig could be so upset about. After a moment, she kneeled down to his level. „Twig, can you cut it out? There's nothing th-“

An almost ear piercing scream inturupted her sentence. Quickly realizing that she was the one screaming. Her eyes widened at the horrifying creature that emerged from the bush. Towering over her, there stood a fifteen foot tall monster. Short ash colored fur covered it's whole body, having long limbs on which were yellowed claws. It's jaw hung slightly open, inside being sharp fangs, a long tongue covered in saliva. Glowing sunken eyes locking into Hilda's.

For a second, she just stood there, frozen in shock, not sure what to do. Her gaze lingering on the monster as she suddenly felt her arm being pulled by Dipper.

„Run! Run! RUN!“ He rushed her, getting her to stumble over a bit before regaining balance and bolting it.

Scurrying away, Hilda instantly stopped in her tracks as she heard a small yelp from behind them, daring to look back, she saw that Twig was still infront of the monster, not moving a muscle.

„Twig!“ Instantly turning back, Dipper grabbed her shoulder before she had the chance to go to Twig's rescue.

„What are you doing?“

Hilda huffed at being stopped by her friend, attempting to shake his grip off of her. „What does it look like I'm doing? I have to get Twig!“

Frowning, Dipper protested. „Do you see that thing? It will kill you! You have to keep running, maybe we have a chance to lose it!“

„Well, I can't let it kill Twig!“ Shaken, Hilda yelled back at him.

Glancing back and seeing the little deerfox attempt to fight back that monster, Dipper felt himself getting a bit frustrated. „Yeah I know, but-“

Before he could finnish, Hilda pushed him away, creating a slight distance between them. „I do not care! Twig- He's...he's in danger and I'm saving him even if it means I'll have to battle that thing!“

Seeing Hilda's determined expression, he realized that there was no use trying to convince her to leave Twig behind. Sighing, he re-adjusted his cap. Racing passed Hilda. Realizing what he was about to do, Hilda stopped in her tracks and raised her hand towards Dipper. „Hey! Wait!“

But before she could stop him from going, he was already by the small deerfox's side. With a swift motion, he grabbed Twig by his fur. Yanking him backwards and causing the creature to let out a small yelp.

After readjusting him in his hand Dipper stumbled forward, running back like his life was depending on it. Clutching the little deerfox in his hand like it was a prized possetion.

When he finally reached Hilda, he placed a hand on her back, encouraging the girl to move forward. „Go! Go! GO!“

They could feel the monster's gaze on them. Twigs snapping under it's weight, branches breaking off as it rushed after them. It was catching up. Fast.

Knowing that they have to think of something right now, Dipper handed Twig to Hilda and pulled journal 3 from his vest. Scrolling through the pages as they ran. Soon, he found out that there was nothing in the book about the creature following them. Feeling a pang of dread, he attempted to think of a solution by himself.

Finally, he had a plan. It was probably not that very good, but there was no way they could ever outrun this thing. He concluded that it was worth a shot.

„Uhh, Hilda? Can you climb trees?“ He blurted out, his breathing picking up.

Already panting like a dog, Hilda answerd. „Ofcourse, I can! But-“ She paused when she had to jump over a particularly large log. „But I don't think that would be useful right now!“

Glancing around in a panic, Dipper spotted a tree that was trice the size of the monster chasing them. Pointing his index finger, he yelled. „Quick up there! I'll help you up!“

Coming to a halt, Dipper quickly began to scope the large pine tree. Grabbing branch by branch, careful to remain balanced. Soon, Hilda followed suit, although it was really tough to climb up with Twig still curled up in her hands. Noticing this, Dipper stopped in his tracks once he was on a steady branch, reaching out a helping hand to her. „Come on!“

Quickly taking it, Dipper managed to pull both Twig and Hilda up to his level. They both sat there for a moment, taking the time to catch their breath.

„I'm sorry, Hilda...“ Lowering his head, Dipper sighed.

„Aw, come on...It's alright...I mean, how were you supposed to know tha-“ They both quickly grabbed onto a nearby branch as they felt the entire tree being shaken. Looking down, they saw the terrifying thing grasping the tree, attempting to shake the two kids down.

Panicked Hilda quickly turned her attention to Dipper. „Dipper! What about your journal? There has to be a way to distract it or- or maybe calm it down!“

„No! There's nothing in here about the creature!“ Frantically flipping through the pages, Dipper shook his head.

The tree eventually gave in, a huge branch snapping under neath Dipper, sending him falling down to the ground, but not before making contact with various branches on the way.

„DIPPER!“ Hilda screamed.

A large thud could be heard once he made contact with the ground. Groaning, Dipper slowly sat up and rubbed his head, feeling a bit disoriented and confused.

The creature instantly noticed Dipper, letting out a sound that was a mix between a roar and a scream. It sounded so inhumane, Dipper covered his ears and squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for something to happen.

As quickly and quietly as possible, Hilda slided down the huge tree. Grabbing the broken off branch off the ground and holding it tightly in her grasp, she sprinted past Dipper and the creature before yelling at it. Attempting to drive it's attention away from Dipper. „Hey! Over here!“

The monster sharply turned it's gaze to the girl wielding a branch. Charging at her at full speed, instantly knocking the little girl over as they made contact.

„Owh!“ Hitting the ground, Hilda let out a small yelp, but quickly turned her attention back to the horrifying creature. Getting ready to use the branch as something to put between them.

Snapping it's mouth open it tried to sink it's teeth into Hilda. It's saliva dripping all over her as she was pinned against the ground.

Swiftly dodging the attack, the girl rose the branch further so the beast didn't have a chance to reach her, but she knew this would only work for so long.

Noticing the struggle, Dipper didn't waste any time. Quickly grabbing another large pointy stick laying on the forest floor. His heart started to race and he could feel the adrenaline starting to kick in as he ran over to Hilda's aid.

With a swing of his hand, using his full strength, he pierced the beast's tough skin near it's spinal column, pushing the stick further in until he could hear it burt out it's thorax.

Letting out an inhumane screetch, blood splattered around the surrounding woods, covering the trees, logs and ground as well as Dipper and Hilda.

Both of the kids backed away from the screaming beast, watching it suddenly collapse to the ground with a loud thud. Everything instantly going quiet as soon as it stopped moving. Erie silence filling the woods.

Hilda and Dipper fell onto their knees. Trying to catch their breath, panting like dogs. They were both soaked in blood and shaken up from the whole experience.

„Oh....Oh my god...“ Dipper huffed between gasps.

Staring at the ground with wide eyes, Her stomach turning at the scene. Hilda whispered. „Did...did we just....?“

„Yeah...“

Approaching them hesitantly, Twig emerged from the nearby bushes, his hair wes standing and he seemed to be on high alert. He poked his wet nose against Hilda's cheek in an attempt to tell her everything's alright.

Her shocked expression slowly turned into a smile when she noticed Twig, her voice still a little shaky, recovering from the sudden rush of adrenaline. „Oh, hey boy.“

Watching them in silence Dipper slowly turned his attention to the carcus lying down in front of them. He took a small stick and carefully pocked the monster's behind.

It didn't move.

Signing in relief, Dipper whiped the sweat from his brow (also the blood.)
„Phew....Come on, we should get out of here.“

Slowly, Hilda nodded in agreement, gesturing Twig to follow them, but as she tried to walk she stumbled and fell to the ground.

„Hilda!“ Dipper rushed to her side, kneeling down. „What's wrong? Are you okay?“

Glancing down at her leg, Hilda attempted to stand up, gritting her teeth. „Yes, I'm alright.“ Taking a quick glance at her leg tho, she knew that nothing was quite alright, it became apparent soon that she managed to sprain her ankle when she was knocked down

"You're hurt!" Dipper hovered over her, a concerned look on his face. "Oh, Hilda I'm so sorry! This is all my fault!"

"No worries." Hilda waved a hand in attempt to asure him. Although, it seemed like she suddenly remembered something, quickly going through her bag in a panic before pulling out the snow globe he gave her earlier, it was still intact, not even having a scratch on it. Smiling widely, she shoved it to him. "Look! It's still in one piece! Haha, yes!"

Nodding, Dipper grinned a little back "That's great! Honestly...I'm pretty surprised that such a cheap thing didn't break-" He shook his head, taking a glance at her leg, he was still feeling guilty for the whole ordeal. Afterall, it was his idea to go into the forest in the first place. "Can you walk?"

Shifting a little closer, Twig nudged her in the side with his nose, wanting to support her, although that didn't work quite well considering his size.

Trying to stand up, Hilda instantly fell over again, Dipper jumped to her side and held out his arms in an attempt to steady the girl

"...Um...I think a little help wouldn't hurt." She sighed, slightly whimpering in pain

"Okay..." Taking her arm, Dipper gently wrapped it around his shoulder, placing his hand on her weist to help her up

With his assistance it wasn't as hard to get up, the two of them slowly began strolling through the forest, now a little uneasy. Dipper was silently cursing himself as he felt a pang of guilt in his stomach. Sure, he and Mabel always went into these woods even though they're always advised not to. But then again, Hilda is not from here. He should've known better then to lure the person he likes into the woods. That never ends well.

The walk back to Hilda's hotel was dead silent. None of them exactly knew what to say to eachother. It did cross Dipper's mind a couple of times to keep apologizing, but when he saw that Hilda was zoning out, glancing all around them, he decided it was probably best to drop it. No amount of sorry would fix this.

As the building came into view so did Johanna who was currently still working on the car. It didn't take her long to notice the two kids emerging from the forest, covered in blood and leaning on eachother. Her eyed wided when she saw Hilda, dropping everything she was doing to run to her.

"HILDA!"

Hearing her mother's horrified voice Hilda shrunk back a little, closing her eyes and preparing for some kind of lecture. "..Ah...Hi mum..." She spoke above a whisper.

Johanna's gaze turned to Dipper who was still supporting her daughter, she sounded angry and concerned. Ofcourse she was. Her child was injured. "What happened!? What did you do!?"

"I-...We were just...taking a stroll...I didn't mean to-" Dipper tried to reason, he felt guilty but at the same time, it wasn't entirely his fault...was it? How was he supposed to know? Even though he was tempted to shift the blame onto something or someone else, he knew he couldn't do that. Deciding to be the man in this situation he sighed. "It's my fault, me'am. I made a mistake."

"Dipper!" Hilda instantly turned to him, wanting to silence him.

"No, It's okay. It's been my stupid idea. I just dragged you into it..."

Johanna looked irritated and a little angry about the whole thing, but didn't say anything to Dipper, instead turning her full attention to Hilda once more.

"....I think....I've sprained my ankle, mum..." She stares at the ground with shame.

Carefuly taking her from Dipper, Hilda whimpers a bit and stumbles slightly, all tough Johanna's hold on her is firm so she doesn't fall. "Alright, that's it, Hilda. I don't want you going out in these woods again."

Hearing those words, Dipper tensed. How could he be so stupid? He knew the forest was dangerous and he dragged his friend that was completely new to the area to it. And now, she's injured and it's all his fault. Feeling guilty about the whole ordeal, Dipper tugged at his hat and covered his face with it.

Hilda stared at her mother for a moment, feeling her chest tighten "What? But why? Nothing bad happened!"

"Hilda, you're-" Johanna gritted her teeth at her daughter's words. Frustration building up "You're bleeding! And you're trying to tell me 'nothing bad happened'?"

"But mum-"

Raising a hand, Johanna cut her off "No. Inside, now!"

Despite wanting to argue further and clear her friend of guilt, Hilda got the feeling she couldn't argue with her mum this time around as she got dragged inside. She glanced at Dipper one more time, giving him a small, silent wave of goodbye.

Watching his friend disappear in the doorway, Dipper waved back a little. However he couldn't keep the dismay off his face. The door closed infront of him and all he could do was stare at it.

Seriously? Has he already managed to mess this whole thing up? Ofcourse, ofcourse he did. He just put her in danger, and for what? Because he wanted to avoid Mabel's teasing? His mouth screwed shut and he kicked a nearby pinecone in frustration, turning around and heading back to the Mystery shack.

___________________________

Once he returned, he felt like his whole good mood dropped. The moment Stan noticed Dipper coming in bruised, he insisted on taking care of it but not after lecturing Dipper on how he should be more careful. Dipper didn't bother explaining how he got them, shrugging it off and claiming he fell into a berry bush... Which did happen a week ago maybe..

After getting patched up, he took his journal and hid it under the bed. He wasn't quite sure why he did that. Maybe it was the lingering frustration. Mabel seemed to quickly pick up on his bad mood and started to tell jokes and such to cheer him up, after a while it seemed to work.
