Chapter 1: A Long Time

Chapter Text

This was a big day for Toritsuka.

He'd waited for this moment for weeks, no, months.

Every day, he had waited for the perfect circumstances.

No surprise inspections, absolutely not.

A distraction, something that would require Saiki to wear his telepathy blocking ring.

Impossibly, Saiki not being able to use X-Ray.

And about a thousand other stuff.

But after an eternity...

Mr Matsuzaki was sick with hay fever, no risk of surprise inspections!

A major event would take place right outside of school. It wouldn't be very loud normally, but there would enough people to give a mind reader a stroke. Toritsuka of course made sure Saiki knew about it.

By some stroke of luck, just yesterday Saiki's brother had made him special glasses to prevent X-Ray, though it only had power for a few days. That would be more than enough time.

The past months, Toritsuka had many failed attempts.

Two months ago he had the nearly perfect opportunity, but the super glutton Mera jumped Toritsuka and ate all the coffee jelly.

Three weeks ago everything was going to plan, until he realized Saiki wasn't wearing his telepathy blocking ring. A close call.

Five and a half weeks ago everything was perfect... until Toritsuka overslept and ruined it all.

But, finally...

It was time.

For the past few years, Toritsuka has had feelings for Saiki. It wasn't a problem at first, but half a year ago it gradually became much harder to hide. Saiki would've discovered it by now if Toritsuka hadn't tried his best to mask it. He knew Saiki was suspicious, but didn't know what was going on.

Now, why didn't Toritsuka just let Saiki figure it out instead of making a big deal about confessing?

He wasn't gonna halfass this, he was properly in love with Saiki, and would do his absolute best when confessing to him.

Due to Saiki being a psychic, he always knew what was going to happen, he rarely got any surprises.

Because of this, Toritsuka wanted to give him a surprise, one he'll never forget and will be overjoyed at.

With overjoyed, he meant not immediately blowing Toritsuka up.

And even if Saiki rejects him, Toritsuka still wants to know that he gave it his best.

He would rather go out with a bang, than crumble into dust and be blown away by the wind.

Toritsuka had brought 3 things to give to Saiki.

A card.

Flowers.

And of course,

Coffee jelly.

He hoped it would make it even more meaningful that he put a lot of thought, effort, energy, time, etc etc into them all.

He had spent many nights staying up rewriting the card again and again, until it was perfect.

Toritsuka knew that Saiki was allergic, so he researched what flowers he liked, that he wasn't allergic of.

Coffee jelly was obviously something Saiki loved a lot, it would be stupid to not include it. Toritsuka had made it himself, after a lot(A LOT) of failed attempts he created the perfect coffee jelly. It was shaped like a giant heart, and had whipped cream decorating it.

The plan was to find Saiki when he's alone, create/wait for/pay someone for a distraction. When he's not paying attention, that's when Toritsuka sweeps in, and gives him the bag full of the gifts. Not much else to it.

As he walked towards the school, the bag of gifts in his school bag, he was both extremely excited and extremely nervous. He had been waiting for this day for months, he was terrified he'd screw it up.

What if Saiki doesn't take him seriously?

What if Saiki finds him disgusting?

What if Saiki doesn't care about everything he put into the confession?

I mean, he's an all mighty psychic who doesn't show much emotion, and most of his time spent with Toritsuka is just bullying him.

Toritsuka has all the right to be anxious.

Should he call it off?

No. He's come so far, he wont back down that easily. If Saiki's reaction is to punch him to Mars, then so be it. He'll take it.

Toritsuka reached the gates, screaming inside, his heart pounding. He searched for Mr Matsuzaki, what if he had been wrong and the teacher was at school?

No Mr Matsuzaki to ruin his plans in sight. It was a relief, but it didn't calm down his heart rate.

He had went to school earlier to have more opportunities to meet Saiki alone.

There weren't many students there yet. Toritsuka hoped that Saiki was one of them.

Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please...

No luck. Guess he had to wait for him.

When Saiki finally crossed the gates, Toritsuka's heart rate picked up further.

Saiki's hair was a bit messy, and he had dark circles under his eyes. Probably didn't get a good night's sleep. Toritsuka didn't mind, he thought it made him look even hotter.

Toritsuka spotted the telepathy blocking ring on Saiki's finger and grinned in triumph. It would've been very embarrassing if Saiki had read his thoughts.

His new glasses only added to it. The lenses had a blue tint to them, and the temples had bunch of white tech stuff.

Even hotter.

As usual, Saiki had walked to school with Kaiyasu, Neindou, and Kubodou. Or whatever their names were.

Toritsuka wondered why he hung out with them so much, they were all idiots. Then again, Saiki hung out with him a lot too, so maybe he shouldn't be talking.

The group split up as they reached the shoe cubbies. The hallways were packed full of students, no good spot to confess. Toritsuka headed inside, he'd have to wait for an opportunity.

Soon, all the students started hurrying to their classes, leaving the hallways drained.

Toritsuka assumed Saiki went to his class as well. He always got there on time, he definitely wouldn't skip class to wait for something he didn't even know would happen.

Disappointed, he began walking towards his own class.

Toritsuka was about to turn a corner, when he heard a door open and footsteps behind him. He turned around as instinct.

To his surprise, it was Saiki. He had gone to the bathroom and just realized he was late for class. It was just too perfect.

"Hi, Saiki!" He called out, his heart rate picking up dramatically. Saiki turned to him.

"Not now, Toritsuka. I'm late for class." He turned away, jogging towards his class.

"No, wait!" Toritsuka yelled desperately. Not now, he was so close! Saiki stopped and huffed.

"What?" He asked.

"D-Do you have a minute?" Toritsuka asked, walking up to him.

"No. What do you want?" Saiki turned to Toritsuka. He had an expression that... Toritsuka couldn't quite put his finger on what it meant.

"It'll be quick, I promise!" He begged. Saiki was about to respond, but a rock flew in through the window a bit behind him. He turned to it, jumping in surprise.

That was Toritsuka's cue. He unzipped the bag quickly and took out the smaller bag.

Who threw the rock?

Toritsuka knew he couldn't rely on blind luck for a distraction, that's why he asked Mikoto for help.

He told her that if she sees Toritsuka and Saiki alone together, she would create a distraction to grab Saiki's attention. She found the request strange, but agreed.

As Toritsuka held out the bag towards Saiki, he felt like his heart was going to explode. Was it too late to back out?

Saiki turned back to him and looked at the bag in surprise.

"What's this?" He asked, confused. Toritsuka felt heat rising to his face. He couldn't get a word out. Instead, he handed the bag to Saiki. Saiki, still confused, took the bag and looked inside.

"Toritsuka, what–" He stopped in the middle of his sentence, and his eyes widened. He took out the card and read it out loud.

"You light me up when I'm down, despite everything you treat me like a fellow. In your beautiful lilac eyes I could drown, much like your face which looks as from someone who would wear a crown. I love you a lot, you're the best in the town. As a gift for occupying my heart, I bring you your favorite coffee jello." Saiki read.

Toritsuka wasn't sure if his heart had stopped, or was beating too fast to be registered.

Saiki looked into the bag again, seeing the flowers and the coffee jelly.

"I- D- Did you- Why- Do you a- I'm-" Saiki stuttered. Toritsuka was shocked, because Saiki actually said that out loud instead of saying it telepathically. Albeit it was a stuttery mess of a "sentence", but it made his heart beat faster, if he still had a heart that is.

Saiki's face got redder by the second. He took another look at the card, and then at the flowers and giant homemade heart shaped coffee jelly, before he looked back at Toritsuka.

"How long have you..?" Saiki asked out loud, with furrowed eyebrows. Toritsuka laughed nervously.

"A few years." He admitted. Saiki's eyes went even wider.

"How did I never notice..?" He wondered, back to speaking telepathically.

"I'm just talented, that's all." Toritsuka looked away.

What now?

Oh, right!

"Do you want to– No, wait..." Toritsuka resisted the urge to smack himself. He messed it up.

Saiki seemed to have recovered from the shock.

"I actually like you too, Toritsuka." Saiki confessed, not minding Toritsuka's mess up.

Toritsuka's jaw dropped to the floor. He came to the conclusion that his heart hadn't exploded yet, because he felt it beating faster.

"Y-You do?" Toritsuka guessed this is how Saiki felt receiving the gifts, finding out Toritsuka was in love with him.

How had he never noticed?!

Saiki nodded.

"I've had a crush on you for about a year or so, but I sort of ignored it." Toritsuka was speechless. He wasn't sure what to think.

"Will you be my boyfriend?" Saiki asked, out loud. Toritsuka felt lightheaded. Did Saiki really just say that? Is he dreaming? How did he turn around the confession like that?

"Hey, I was supposed to ask that!" Toritsuka broke free from being speechless. He had practiced that tons of times, yet he doesn't even get to ask it?

Saiki huffed, smiling.

"You were too slow.

"You didn't give me an answer, though."

Toritsuka didn't even need to think about what to say.

"Yes, yes, yes! A million times yes!" He exclaimed.

A muffled cheering was heard somewhere outside.

Toritsuka laughed out of relief. He couldn't believe how smoothly it had gone. Finally, after all these months, he had finally confessed. And now he had a boyfriend.

Saiki stared at the coffee jelly, practically drooling. Of course.

Suddenly he snapped out of it and looked up.

"We're late for class." He remembered.

"Ohhh crap.." Toritsuka completely forgot about that.

"See you later." Saiki nodded at Toritsuka as he put all the gifts in his school bag.

"Yep!" He smiled so hard it hurt.

The two of them separated and walked, no, jogged, no wait, ran to their classes.

Even after being scolded by the teacher in front of the whole class, Toritsuka still couldn't stop smiling.

He thought about what he'd do after school.

Maybe go on a date with Saiki?

He couldn't sit still.

He was so excited to finally have a boyfriend.
