Work Text:

The sky is a coolish teal, white puffy clouds decorating the air. A small, spring breeze blows through the meadow, ruffling the light green grass and small daisies. The meadow is broad and vast, life springing up from the ground as plenty of wild life prance through the grass. Deer and rabbits hop around, making Gem squeal from the cuteness.

“Look!” The goddess points towards a fawn nibbling on some greenery with its mother sticking close behind. Gem grabs Cleo’s arm, “Deers are definitely the best thing I’ve ever created!”

Cleo chuckles at their girlfriend’s excitement. The warden hybrid is dressed in a dark, shoulderless top with some cute birds painted on by Gem. Although they don’t have much skin to really cover, they still want to be fashionable. Holes are ripped into their jeans, muddied up by how much time Cleo’s spent in their skulk cave. Speaking of skulk, some drips out of her right eye, a glowing teal pupil sticking out in the dark. Ginger locks cascade down their back, quite contrary to their dark clothes. A picnic basket is propped up under their arm.

Gem still excitedly hops up and down on spot, eyes sparkling with joy. The life goddess wears a cute, yellow dress, decorated with white flowers and other cute plant life. She painted them on herself. Sometimes Cleo wishes that she could paint as well as Gem could, admiration brewing in her heart while viewing Gem’s art.

Gem started to pick up the hobby after learning more and more about painting in the mortal world. Ever since she decided to disguise herself as just a regular civilian, she’s started to learn a lot about what her creations have been doing. Often, Gem shares her discoveries with Cleo too, excited to spread her knowledge. And Cleo always listens to her with a soft smile on their face.

Cleo chuckles, taking the picnic basket from under their arm and settles it down on the grass. “Well, I guess this is a perfect spot, then?”

Gem nods, green eyes still twinkling. She quickly sits down and helps the warden hybrid unpack the stuff. Picnics have always been enjoyed and cherished by the two of them, a sort of special treat or celebration.

Once the picnic blanket is all laid out across the grass, they start to unpack the food. Strawberry jam sandwiches covered in plastic wrap are neatly placed on the blanket, along with some tea and other sorts of fruits. Chocolate chip cookies stacked up on a plate and ice cream are also taken out of the basket (Gem insisted).

Cleo loves listening to Gem talk, and picnics give the best opportunity for that. While eating strawberries or sipping down some lemonade, the life goddess likes to gossip about what’s been going around town. Although acting like a regular civilian has become easy for Gem, there’s still things that she learns about and discovers almost daily.

“Look at this!” Gem holds up a funny-looking object. “This is what mortals call a teapot. Y’know, because it holds tea.” She pours out some of the tea into Cleo’s cup, looking accomplished. “And look at the floral pattern!”

Cleo picks the teapot up, studying its design. Beautiful flowers of all sorts of colors are carved into the porcelain, small details and designs galore. The warden hybrid smiles, “Where’d you get it from?”

“Oh, a mortal friend of mine, I’ve told you about him. Impulse, remember?” Gem’s eyes widen, as if she remembers something important to say, “Speaking about him, actually, I’ve heard he’s got a boyfriend! Well, kinda boyfriend. Skizz Man, the ironsmith that I told you about? I asked Impulse if they were together but he kept on turning red and denying it.” Gem frowns, eyebrows furrowing together. “But they do all sorts of romantic stuff I’ve seen before. Heck, I’ve seen them kiss before!”

Cleo laughs at all the drama, a loud, bellowing laugh. Gem’s always told them that she loves their laugh, even if most find it scary or disturbing. “Mortals are confusing,” Cleo muses, taking a sip from her cup. “I’ve never understood them anyways.” They wave a dismissive hand.

Gem giggles, taking a bite out of her sandwich. “You got that right.”

The two of them sit in silence for a while, letting the comfortable quiet sit between them. Birds chirp and sing in the distance, wings flapping against the steady breeze. Cleo pushes down the feeling of slight jealousy at Gem’s words. Their girlfriend has always found it easy to get along with mortals and even have good relationships with them. What if one day Gem leaves her for the mortal world? Are teapots really that interesting?

“Hey, Gem?” Cleo says out of the blue, voice uncharacteristically quiet.

Gem tilts her head. “Yes, Cleo?”

“...You’re not going to leave me for the mortal world, right?”

Gem gasps, as if Cleo just said the most preposterous thing. She takes their hands, “Of course not! What makes you think that?”

“I mean,” Cleo starts, “you just spend so much time with them. And it’s all so new and flashy… maybe you’re getting bored of me.”

“Cleo,” Gem holds Cleo’s chin up, caressing their face. “You are my everything. I wouldn’t leave you for anything in the world, no matter how cool it could be.”

The warden hybrid smiles. “Not even for a thousand teapots?”

Gem laughs and shakes her head. “Not even for a thousand teapots.”

And that’s that.
