Chapter Text

It had been months since the last major fight—no Eggman, no doomsday devices, no reality-warping gems or dimensional threats. Just the slow, gentle breath of time filling the valleys of Green Hills with peace. Sonic wasn’t sure what to do with it at first.

He wasn’t built for stillness, for quiet. He’d spent his life outrunning danger, outrunning responsibility, sometimes even outrunning his own feelings. But for once, nothing needed saving.

Well—almost nothing.

“Shadow,” Sonic called, stepping down the hill that led to the clearing by the river. “You’re not hiding again, are you?”

Shadow stood at the edge of the water, arms folded, his silhouette reflected darkly in the ripples below. He didn’t turn at the sound of Sonic’s voice, but his ears flicked—an acknowledgement.

Sonic grinned, as he always did when Shadow didn’t immediately tell him to buzz off. That counted as progress.

“You’re really making a habit of staying in Green Hills,” Sonic continued, hands resting behind his head as he approached. “Should I be worried? Or flattered?”

Shadow exhaled. “Neither. The air here is… tolerable.”

“Pfft. That’s the highest compliment you’ve given this place. I’ll take it.”

Shadow gave a short look over his shoulder, half-annoyed, half-amused. The truth was, he had been staying longer. First it was a week, then two. Then he started showing up at the gatherings Tails and Amy arranged, sitting just far enough away not to participate, but close enough that Sonic noticed.

Always close enough that Sonic noticed.

It was Tails who first whispered, “I think he likes it here,” as they watched Shadow standing with his back to everyone, arms folded, but visibly relaxed for the first time. Sonic had blinked, then watched him more closely.

Shadow had stopped snarling as much. He answered questions with more than one word. He didn’t disappear mid-conversation anymore. And more importantly, he never seemed to mind when Sonic was near.

That morning, Amy had dragged everyone out for a picnic under the old sycamore by the cliff. Rouge showed up fashionably late with Knuckles in tow—both acting as if they hadn’t just walked out of the same tent.

Knuckles tossed a berry into his mouth and leaned against a rock, his usual scowl softened. Rouge nudged him playfully, something close to a smirk on her lips.

“Oh please,” she purred, “just admit you followed me here.”

Knuckles scoffed. “You wish.”

“Right,” Sonic whispered to Tails as they set out the food, “and I guess the matching blushes are just a coincidence.”

Tails snorted.

Shadow stood at the edge of the group, watching. He didn’t sit, didn’t eat, but he didn’t leave either. His eyes flicked to Sonic now and then—quiet, calculating.

Sonic didn’t push him. Not yet.

Instead, he made sure to walk close when he passed him a plate, fingers brushing ever so slightly. Shadow didn’t pull away.

Later, when Amy insisted they all pose for a “friendship photo,” Shadow gave Sonic a look that clearly said if you make me do this, I will destroy you.

“You’re already in the background,” Sonic said, stepping beside him. “Just look slightly less like you’re planning world domination and you’ll blend right in.”

“I’m not smiling.”

“Wouldn’t expect you to. But maybe… don’t frown?”

Shadow sighed. Somehow, he stayed in the photo.

That evening, Sonic found him on the hill again, watching the sky turn gold.

“You’re not very good at this whole ‘relaxing’ thing,” Sonic said, flopping down beside him.

“I don’t relax,” Shadow replied flatly.

Sonic leaned back on his elbows, gaze on the horizon. “No kidding.”

They sat in silence for a while. It wasn’t awkward. Sonic had learned that Shadow was a fan of silence. He used it like armor, and Sonic had gotten better at slipping through the cracks.

Then, in a moment that might’ve gone unnoticed by anyone else, Shadow shifted.

Just slightly.

His shoulder brushed against Sonic’s. He didn’t move away.

Sonic’s breath caught, just for a second.

“Nice night,” he said, voice low.

“Hmph.”

Sonic looked over. “You always grunt when you agree with me.”

“I grunt when you talk too much.”

“Which is most of the time.”

They sat like that until the stars came out, a flicker of shared warmth in the stillness.

Sonic didn’t point it out when Shadow’s eyes lingered on him just a little longer than usual.
