You're Not Serious

Summary:

Shadow is being deported, and he'll try anything to stay on this stupid rock. Including but not limited to marrying Sonic to take advantage of his legal status.

Chapter 1: Liability

Chapter Text

Shadow stared across the desk at the G.U.N. agent.

“You’re not serious.” It wasn’t a question.

She shook her head unsympathetically. “I am 100% serious, Agent Shadow. You’re a liability, and you’re being deported. After the events of your last mission, G.U.N. was forced to investigate your records thoroughly and it turns out you have no records. You’re an alien, Agent. Literally.”

Shadow was fuming, but he didn’t let it show. His paws curled into fists, claws digging into the pad of his palm through his gloves. He tried not to let it show. But it was unfair! Deported! Where was he even supposed to go? The Earth was his home, and he told the agent as much.

“No,” she corrected. “We are sending you back to where you came from, as it is no longer safe for you to remain on Earth.”

Agent Caden put her palms flat on the large wooden desk and stood. “You have three days to get your things together. ”

Shadow left with one more disgusted glare and shut the door with a slam.

Sonic poked at the slice of watermelon disgustedly. Why would anyone want to eat more water?

“You don’t have to eat it, Sonic,” Amy sighed from across the picnic blanket.

Oh thank Gaia, he thought, setting down the disgusting, drippy fruit and picking up a third chili dog. “When are Tails and Knuckles getting here?”

“I’m not sure,” Amy answered as she checked the time again. “It should be soon, they’re late.”

Sonic laughed to himself at the thought of Tails being late while he was early. He hadn’t really had a choice though. Amy had shown up at his house and practically dragged him to the park. Sonic thought it was probably so she could be sure he wouldn’t forget or try weasel out of it again. They’d had to reschedule this lunch three times because Sonic kept mysteriously having other errands to run.

Amy looked back over at Sonic, who was absentmindedly fiddling with the buckle on his shoe while he ate. He was lost in his own little world, it seemed, staring out at the forest surrounding the park. She sighed heavily, hoping he would notice and ask her what was wrong, however unlikely that was. Instead he turned his head in the opposite direction, narrowing his eyes. “Did you see that?” he asked.

“See what?”

“That little flash of red. Oh, maybe it’s Knux!” Sonic got to his feet with a flash of blue energy. There it was again! He squinted, trying to see through the trees. He caught sight of the black and red blur for a third time. Shadow!

“It’s Shadow!” Sonic got excited. He hadn’t seen Shadow in aaaages. His missions took up so much of his time, and Sonic got the vibe that Shadow wasn’t a huge fan of social activities anyways. Maybe Sonic would pop over and see what was up with the guy. He grabbed another chili dog from the plate and told Amy not to wait up.

💎💎💎

Shadow had left Agent Caden’s office in a rush. He needed to get home and tell Rouge. He needed to make a plan. He needed to start packing.

He was startled out of his fuming by a rush of blue energy coming up beside him. “Heya, Shadsy! Long time no see!”

Great.

“Sonic.”

“Yep, that’s me! I brought you a chili dog,” Sonic offered the disgusting hot dog, waving it under Shadow’s nose. Shadow took it, but only so he’d shut up.

“What do you want,” Shadow asked with no genuine curiosity.

“Nothing! I just saw you and came by to say hi,” Sonic grinned at him, taking a huge chomp out of his own half a hot dog.

“You’ve accomplished your task. Leave me alone.”

“Ouch, Shadow! Wake up on the wrong side of bed much?”

“I told you to leave,” Shadow growled. It wasn’t bad enough that he was being deported, Sonic had to come and add insult to injury?

“Okay, okay, gosh. Just thought I’d see how you were doing, cuz I hadn’t seen you since last month and all.”

Last month, when they’d run into each other at Eggman’s base. On that mission that had made G.U.N. decide Shadow was a liability and “forced” them to investigate his records. The mission that was getting him deported. The one Sonic had been a part of! Why weren’t they deporting Sonic and all his friends too?

Shadow whirled on Sonic, grabbing him by the shoulders.

“Whoa! I thought you wanted me gone, Shads! This is a little forward, don’cha think?”

“Shut up. Have you been approached by a G.U.N. agent in the last month,” Shadow demanded.

“Yeeeah.”

“Who.”

“You. Right now.”

Shadow glared at Sonic. “Other than me.”

“Uhhh… No? Why?”

“Unimportant.” Shadow released his grip on Sonic’s shoulders and folded his arms thoughtfully. Why weren’t they trying to make Sonic leave too? He was just as much of a liability at this point. Maybe… Maybe they couldn’t.

“Sonic. Do you have a birth certificate.”

“Yeah. They hadta give me one for all the hospital stuff, y’know.”

Shadow didn’t know, but that wasn’t important. The important thing was that Sonic had legal proof of being an Earth resident. It could be done. Now the only problem was getting some for himself. Shadow spun on his heels and ran off toward his house. This could be the solid beginnings of a plan. He distantly heard Sonic calling out as he ran away.

“Bye, I guess!”
