The Caro Kingdom's Crown Prince

Summary:

As he gazed into the mirror, a smile touched his lips.

He looked... different, certainly.

But there was a spark in his eyes that hadn't been there before and a lightness that made him feel as if he had shed a heavy burden.

Work Text:

The warmth of the afternoon sun washed over the meadow, casting long shadows as the young Prince Valentino lay amidst the swaying grasses.

His raven hair, a crown of silky threads that had drawn envy from many, fluttered gently in the breeze.

He and Adin, future rulers of neighboring lands, had spent countless hours here as children, sharing dreams of heroism and friendship that stretched as far as the horizon.

Their laughter had been the sweetest of melodies to the creatures of the field, a promise of a future filled with camaraderie and peace.

Yet years later, that promise had turned to ash in Valentino's mouth.

Now, as he stared into the mirror, his reflection revealed not the proud prince he once knew, but a man whose once-lush hair had been replaced by a stark gleaming dome.

The memory of that final battle, the one that had taken not just his hair but also his sense of self-worth, was a constant thorn in his side.

It was Adin, his ex-best friend and the current Crown Prince of the Mogoru Empire, who had bested him in combat and claimed victory. But it was the potion Adin had used to gain the upper hand that had stolen Valentino's crowning glory.

The whispers of the court had grown too loud and too cruel, leaving him no choice to to retreat to his chambers.

Each strand that had fallen away had taken a piece of his dignity with it, leaving him grasping at straws, searching for a way to restore what had been lost.

His advisors, once loyal to him, had now hovered like vultures, whispering about his inability to lead, his lack of... well, anything that didn't involve hair.

Lady Pertricia, his head advisor, had suggested a focus on strategy, on diplomacy, or well on anything that didn't involve the follicular follies that consumed his waking thoughts.

But Valentino's mind was like a stubborn beast locked on a single and desperate quest.

Knock Knock

A knock at the door pulled him from his brooding.

"Your Highness," Lady Pertricia called, her voice measured and calm, "a package has arrived from the Mogoru Palace."

Valentino's heart leaped as hope sparking in his chest.

Perhaps it was a peace offering, a gesture of goodwill, or maybe a... hairpiece?

He threw open the door, only to find a small velvet-covered box in her outstretched hand.

"It's addressed to you," she said with a hint of wariness, her eyes betraying the countless times she'd seen him disappointed by such gifts.

He took the box, his heart racing as he pondered the possibilities. What could Adin be sending this time?

With trembling hands, Valentino lifted the lid. Inside, nestled in a bed of shredded gold leaf, lay a tiny scroll.

Unfurling it revealed a single line of ink, written in Adin's unmistakable script,

"For your courage in the face of hairlessness".

A moment of confusion gave way to indignation as he realized the scroll was accompanied by a tiny gold-plated hairbrush.

The irony was not lost on him, and he couldn't help but laugh. Afterall, it was either that or scream.

He crumpled the scroll and tossed the brush aside, letting the gold leaf fluttering to the floor like the remnants of his pride.

"Is this a jest?" he bellowed as he stormed over to his advisor.

Yet the female advisor remained unfazed by his ire as Pertricia's gaze was steady.

"I believe it's meant to be an apology, Your Highness. However, the delivery may leave something to be desired."

She handed him another larger scroll, this one sealed with the Mogoru Royal Seal.

"The instructions for the hair-regeneration serum," she said calmly, yet her voice laced with skepticism.

"Perhaps it's time we consider the offer with the seriousness it deserves."

Valentino's eyes lit up. This could be his chance to regain what had been stolen from him.

But as he took the scroll, he couldn't shake the feeling that Adin's gesture was as much a trap as it was a gift.

Ignoring Lady Pertricia's warnings, Valentino retreated to his private chamber, eager to try the serum.

He read the instructions, which seemed to have been written by someone with a penchant for riddles and a lack of medical knowledge.

The ingredients were exotic and the process fraught with potential danger. Yet, desperation fueled his resolve.

He mixed the potion with trembling hands, the room filled with the cacophony of bubbling potions and the occasional pop of a fizzing substance.

As he applied it to his bald head, he felt a strange warmth, a tingling that grew into an intense burning sensation. He bit back a scream as his eyes watered at the sudden pain.

The potion was working!

Or was it?

The room spun as his vision blurred.

He stumbled over to the mirror with his heart racing erratically.

The reflection staring back at him was not the prince he had once been, but a man with a head of hair that grew longer and more unruly with every passing second.

It sprouted in every direction and within moments it had transformed into a monstrous thicket of tangles and knots. His guards rushed in with their swords drawn, only to find their prince entangled in a cocoon of hair.

He looked like a tragic hero in a myth, doomed to forever battle his own follicular fate.

Panic surged through Valentino's veins as he attempted to free himself. The hair grew faster than he could pull it out, wrapping around his limbs and face, threatening to suffocate him.

His cries for help grew muffled, the once-silent chamber now echoing with his desperate struggle.

Lady Pertricia, alerted by the commotion, burst into the room only for her teacup to shatter on the floor in her shock. She took one look at the hairy spectacle and immediately knew what had happened.

"The serum!" she exclaimed and ran to find the potion and the scroll.

The guards, now fully aware of the non-threat, sheathed their swords and attempted to untangle the prince. Yet their efforts as futile as trying to cut through iron chains with a butter knife.

The more they pulled, the faster the hair grew, creating a hairy prison that was both absurd and terrifying.

Pertricia scanned the scroll, her eyes darting over the incomprehensible instructions.

"The antidote!" she murmured, finding a line buried in a sea of nonsensical advice.

"You must find the rare moonflower nectar!"

The moonflower grew only on the dangerous and forbidden Forest of Darkness, the land where the Crimson Commander resides, a treacherous journey that would take days.

Yet, the alternative was unthinkable.

Valentino nodded, his movements limited by the thick hair.

The advisors and guards looked at each other, understanding that they had to act quickly.

They immediately contacted the Roan Kingdom's Crown Prince and after getting their permission, carefully wrapped the prince in a velvet cloak.

The fabric sliding over his hair like water and secured him to the back of a horse.

The journey to the Henituse Duchy was fraught with danger and uncertainty, but the fate of their kingdom rested on the slim hope that this absurd quest would not only save Valentino's scalp but also, perhaps, give him a new perspective on his worth.

As they rode and the hair grew steadily, the weight of it a constant reminder of Adin's "gift".

Yet, amidst the chaos, Valentino felt a strange sense of liberation.

He had spent so long hiding behind his hair that he had forgotten what it was like to face the world without it.

He began to ponder the nature of friendship, the weight of a crown, and the true measures of a man's worth. Perhaps, he thought, his baldness was a sign that he needed to grow in other ways not just in hair length.

When they reached the Duchy's gate, they immediately rushed towards the heroes abode after getting their identities checked.

They have arrived and now stands at the entrance of the Forbidden Region.

The moonflower was in full bloom, its sweet scent permeating the cool night air. It would have been ideal were the hero was here to guide them, but he is currently away to stop the Empire from storming the Jungle.

The walk was perilous, the path treacherous, but Valentino felt a determination that had been absent for years.

As he approached the clearing, the weight of his hair became a symbol of his burdens, the tangles reflecting the knots of his past grief and anger.

With a newfound resolve, he plucked the moonflower, the nectar glistening like a beacon of hope in the moonlight.

The journey on the way back was swift, the group racing against time.

Upon their return to the castle, Valentino retreated to his chamber once more. The room was silent as they waited for the antidote to take effect.

The hair grew slower and slower before eventually stopping, leaving him with a head of soft downy fuzz.

As he gazed into the mirror, a smile touched his lips.

He looked... different, certainly.

But there was a spark in his eyes that hadn't been there before, a lightness that made him feel as if he had shed a heavy burden along with his unruly mane.

He had learned a valuable lesson from his hair-raising ordeal.

That true power didn't come from a crown or a head of hair, but from the strength of one's character and the bonds of friendship.

The next day, Valentino called for a meeting with the kingdom officials. His advisors braced themselves for another hair-induced disaster, but what they saw was a changed man.

He strode into the chamber with his head held high, wearing a simple cloth cap covering his fuzzy crown.

"I have something to say," Valentino announced with his voice strong and clear.

He paused for a bit, then removed the cap, revealing his baldness to all.

And immediately, gasps rang out as every minister gave surprised looks.

Haven't their prince went on a journey to find the antidote?

...did it remove everything–?

Valentino could almost hear their thoughts, yet he remained steady as he stared at them in determination.

"My friends," he finally began, "for too long, I have let my vanity and obsession with hair cloud my judgment. But thanks to a... certain serum," he added with a wry smile, "I have learned that what truly matters is not what's on our heads, but what's in our hearts."

The tension in the room eased as a ripple of laughter spread.

Pertricia watched with a mix of relief and admiration. The prince had faced his fears and emerged with a wisdom beyond his years.

"I know we are at war," he continued calmly, "but it is not because of our differences in hair growth that we fight. It is because of misunderstandings, greed, and fear."

He held up the crumpled note from Adin.

"This... this is not an insult, but a badge of honor that I will wear until my dying days."

The officials nodded gravely.

It was clear that Valentino's ordeal had not just been a humorous tale, but a profound revelation.

He went on to outline his vision for peace, a proposal that involved not just military strategy, but cultural exchanges and trade agreements that could benefit kingdoms.

His words caused the room buzzed with excitement.

The idea was ludicrous of course, what good could come from sharing a cup of tea with their enemies? But there was something in Valentino's earnestness that made it seem possible.

And so, the Caro Kingdom prepared for a different kind of battle, one of words and diplomacy.

And then–

The day after the White War dawned.

Valentino stood before the grand hall's mirror. Pertricia offered a velvet wig, but he declined with a shake of his head.

"This is who I am," he said firmly, "let them see me for who I truly am."

He stepped into the hall with his head bare but his heart open.

The talks began, tense and fraught with the weight of their nations' futures. Yet, as Valentino spoke of friendship and understanding, the room's atmosphere began to shift.

Treaties were signed, and the war that had raged for so long came to an unexpectedly comical and heartwarming end.

And so, the story of the bald prince, a tale told to children in all the lands to teach them the importance of friendship and the true meaning of courage.

As for the moonflower, it grew in the castle gardens, a reminder to Valentino of the journey he'd undertaken, and the growth that had come from the most unexpected of places.

The Caro Kingdom flourished under his rule, all because the bald prince had chosen to face his fears, and his follicular fiascos, together with his people.
