Work Text:
Peanut lay flat on his back, staring up at the sky, his breath coming in sharp, ragged gasps.
His ankles were on fire, pain radiating up his legs in hot, pulsing waves.
He’d felt the sickening pop when he landed wrong, both joints twisting under his weight before giving out completely.
“Gosh—darn it,” he hissed, trying to shift, but the pain flared so violently that he had to squeeze his eyes shut.
Above him, Crash stood with his arms crossed, unimpressed. “Oh, come on, Peanut. You’re not dying.”
Peanut let out a wheezing laugh, gripping his thighs just to keep himself from screaming. “Yea-! Uh- not yet anyway- i- I think i might need to be carried-.”
Crash snorted. “Right. And I bet you cracked your skull too, huh? Maybe broke a few ribs while you were at it?”
Peanut looked up at him. “I can’t move. Crash i'm- i'm not trying to trick you. I-”
“Uh-huh,” Crash drawled, already turning away. “Drama queen. I’ll be inside when you’re done milking this.”
And just like that, he walked off, boots crunching against the dirt.
Peanut gritted his teeth, his whole body tense with barely contained sob.
“Your ok, your ok, your ok–” Peanut chanted to himself.
All he had to do was..?
Relocate his ankles–?
He took a deep breath. Alright. One at a time.
Reaching down, he gripped his right boot as tightly as he could. His hands were trembling, but he pulled—hard.
Pain shot through his leg like a lightning bolt, making him bite down a scream.
His vision blurred.
His stomach twisted.
But then—
P O P
His ankle snapped back into place.
The relief was instant, but ache still lingered.
One down.
Peanut panted for a second, gathering his strength, then grabbed his other foot. This time, he didn’t hesitate.
He jerked it into place with a brutal, forceful yank.
P O P
Black spots dotted his vision, but he was already sitting up, rolling his shoulders as he let the pain simmer down to something manageable. He flexed his feet experimentally.
It was a little sore
but he’d walk it off.
