Still, it’s a surprise the day Tommy radios to let the dispatchers know his patrol group is on their way back only to end up speaking with his niece.
“This is Jackson,” comes Ellie’s voice, a little crackly from the radio static this far out but still clearly her. Smiling, he presses the button to talk again.
“What are you doing on the radio, syrup? That ain’t for kids.” There’s no heat to it, really–the patrol was easy and there’s no emergency–but it’s probably not a bad idea to let Ellie know that the radios aren’t for playing pretend.
Ellie, though, is apparently in no mood to entertain silly questions like what the fuck she’s doing on the official dispatch she shouldn’t be as much as touching.
“Patrol group name and location,” her voice comes back. A beat. “Please.”
“Ellie, put Amy on,” he says, patiently but firmly enough to let her know he’s not playing along with this particular game.
“Amy said answer the funking question,” Ellie says, smugly.
“Yeah, Tommy,” comes Amy’s voice before he has a chance to respond. “Answer the funking question.”
