Jealousy

Summary:

"Thomas wills his brain to recall more memories with her in them but it doesn’t work, if anything it just makes his head hurt. “Well. Do you recognize her?” Newt asks, his voice having an edge to it that it normally doesn’t have.

Thomas looks over at him, shaking his head slowly. He might have seen her before but he doesn’t feel like he actually recognizes her. “No.”

“Really? Cause she seemed to recognize you.”"

Teresa coming up in the box but a little different and with a lot of jealous Newt!
(Slight prequel to my oneshot "You're Not Him", but you could read them without needing the other. Different chapters for the different perspectives.)

Chapter 1: Thomas

Chapter Text

Thomas frowns at Gally from his seat, he feels like this is entirely stupid. It’s been a week since he broke the rule but they’re still having meetings to discuss it because of Gally. He was helping but it feels like every time he does anything it’s met with backlash. He’s not sure why Gally hates him but it’s getting pretty old. Thomas had helped save Minho and Alby, he had brought them back safely, doesn’t that outweigh the bad that he did by breaking one rule? Not to Gally.

He turns his attention to Newt, who looks just as annoyed as Thomas feels. Newt had been, rightfully, angry at Thomas when he got back to the Glade. The two just started dating a few days ago and Thomas had done something stupid that could have easily gotten him killed. He can admit it was a stupid move but sometimes he doesn’t think things entirely through before his body is moving him to do said thing.

When he and Minho had gotten back into the Glade Newt had looked angrier than Thomas had ever seen him and after the crowd dissipated Newt had instantly started scolding him. He’s apologized and assured Newt he won’t go running into the maze right before it closes ever again but he doubts Newt’s going to let him leave his sight tonight.

Thomas is pulled out of his thoughts by a familiar siren starting. Everyone in the room freezes and Thomas watches as some of them start rushing out of the room and he follows after. There has only been one box since he came up and it was only supplies, no new greenie. It was a big deal and something that Gally had, once again, blamed him for. But that box came up a few weeks ago, there shouldn’t be another box this early.

He follows after the others, pushing through the crowd to get to the box as it opens. Thomas reaches the front of the crowd and looks down into the box. Newt stands inside of it, standing over what seems to be a passed out girl. While seeing a girl in the box was already shocking enough, she felt oddly familiar. Thomas has seen her before. The longer he stares at her the more familiar she becomes. After a moment he realises that is the girl he sees in the glimpses of memories that he gets while asleep. “What is it?” Someone asks.

“It’s a girl,” Newt answers, crouching down to grab something. “There’s a note… ‘She’s the last one… ever’... What the hell does that mean?”

No one gets to reply before the girl suddenly gasps awake, causing everyone else to jump and back away from the box a bit. The girl is looking around quickly and as soon as she makes eye contact with Thomas she lets out a breath. “Thomas!”

She passes out as quickly as she woke up but Thomas is frozen in place, how did this girl know his name? She shouldn’t remember anything so how did she remember him? Everyone that was once looking at the girl now turns to look at him, which includes Newt. Newt is looking at him with an unreadable expression but Thomas can tell that he’s upset.

It’s a bit of a blur as the girl is moved to the Homestead by the Med-jacks and he is brought along by Minho and Newt. He just couldn’t get over how he had actually seen this girl before, she was in his memories. But he couldn’t figure out why. He listens to Newt talk to the Med-jacks about her but his focus is on her face. Thomas wills his brain to recall more memories with her in them but it doesn’t work, if anything it just makes his head hurt. “Well. Do you recognize her?” Newt asks, his voice having an edge to it that it normally doesn’t have.

Thomas looks over at him, shaking his head slowly. He might have seen her before but he doesn’t feel like he actually recognizes her. “No.”

“Really? Cause she seemed to recognize you?” Newt quickly says, a slight scowl on his face.

He frowns softly, he doesn’t know why Newt is acting this way. He gets a bit nervous, tensing slightly. “Newt…”

Newt lets out a soft sigh. “Sorry Tommy. That was rude. I’m just…”

“Jealous?” Minho teases, looking at Newt.

Thomas raises an eyebrow. “Jealous? Of what?”

“Of her you Shank. He’s worried that since she recognizes you she’s going to take you,” Minho explains, rolling his eyes. “You’re so dense sometimes.”

Newt glares past Thomas at Minho, who laughs. “Ignore him. You’re sure you don’t recognize her at all?” He asks as he turns his attention back to Thomas.

Thomas sighs softly. “You know those dreams I’ve told you about?”

“The memories?”

“Yeah… She’s in them. But I don’t know anything about her, I’ve just seen her face. So I don’t really recognize her, it’s like… I’ve just seen her in passing before,” Thomas explains, glancing at the girl again before looking back at Newt.

Newt nods slowly but doesn’t say anything. “You two must have known each other if you are seeing her,” Minho hums.

He knows that’s true, they must be connected somehow if he has had memories of her. He just has no idea how. When he looks at her he doesn’t particularly feel any specific way about her, if anything, he feels… like he does when he sees Chuck. Chuck is like his little brother and the second he came out of the box and met the much younger boy he had felt that way. “Maybe we were brother and sister,” He says.

Newt and Minho both look at him with a raised eyebrow. “What makes you say that?” Newt asks.

Thomas shrugs. “I don’t know, it’s just what I feel when I look at her. Like when I look at Chuck. Chuck is like my little brother.”

“But you and her don’t really look alike,” Minho says. “Her hair is darker than yours and you’re a bit tanner than her.”

“Well that doesn’t matter. I’m sure siblings can look different,” Thomas shakes his head. “I guess we won’t know for sure though, that’s just what I feel.”

“When she wakes up, we’ll see what she knows and go from there,” Newt says. “She knew your name and you didn’t even know your name when you came in so she must know something.”

Thomas nods in agreement, giving the girl one last look before following Newt as he starts to leave.

Thomas is returning from his new job as a runner, which he thanked Newt for immensely, when he sees the giant commotion around one of the tall towers in the Glade. “What’s going on over there?” Minho asks, motioning towards the others.

“I don’t know, let's go check it out.”

The two make their way over to the tower quickly and as they do Thomas notices the yelling and the boys all covering their heads with various objects. “Get down here!” Gally yells.

Thomas glances at Minho, confused, as they get closer. When he sees Chuck he speeds up a bit. “Chuck, what’s going on?”

“That girl woke up. I didn’t know girls were so awesome,” He laughs, pointing up at the top of the tower.

Thomas looks up just in time to see the girl that came up in the box yesterday stick her head over the edge and then throw something down at the group of boys that are seemingly trying to get her down. “Leave me alone!”

He moves closer, spotting Newt who is shielded under a piece of wood Winston is holding. “Newt?” He calls, rushing over to him.

“Tommy?”

“What’s going on?” He asks, shielding his head as he stands next to his boyfriend.

“That girl woke up and freaked out, she’s been up there for hours. She won’t listen to anyone and keeps throwing things down,” Newt answers, looking up.

Thomas follows his gaze, tensing a bit when he sees the girl looking down at him. “Thomas?”

Newt looks over at him, jaw suddenly set. “She recognizes you. She’ll probably listen to you,” He says, voice hard. “Go talk to her. Tell her what’s going on here and that she has to come down. We need to keep her safe and if she’s got herself barricaded up there then we can’t do that.”

He nods slowly, unsure why Newt is upset but wanting to do as told and help him feel better. “Okay, I’ll try and see what she knows too… Then we can have dinner together like usual.”

Newt relaxes a bit, smiling softly as he reaches out to squeeze Thomas’s side. “Yeah.”

Thomas smiles brightly before turning back to looking at the girl. “Yeah! It’s Thomas. I’m going to come up, okay?”

The girl nods slowly and pulls away from the edge of the tower so Thomas takes that as his que to go up. He’s glad that she’s awake, all the questions he has have been whipping around inside of his head since he saw her. He really hopes she has some answers for him. “Alright guys, let's give them some space. Tommy will get her to come down and we don’t want to crowd her,” Newt says from the ground, already shooing people away.

Thomas is grateful for him, he always knows what to do. Newt really is his rock in here, he’s glad that they have each other. He watches Newt walk away as he climbs up the rest of the tower, only looking away when he gets to the top. “Alright, I’m here,” Thomas calls, pushing open the trapdoor. He climbs up a bit, freezing when he sees that the girl has a machete in hand. “Woah!”

“Where am I? What is this place?” The girl asks quickly.

Thomas holds a hand up in surrender as he climbs up the rest of the way. “This is the Glade. You arrived yesterday in the box. Do you remember that?” He asks slowly, closing the door behind him so he can sit on it.

“Not really…” She says slowly, dropping the machete a bit.

“Well we all went through it. We don’t know who sends us up but we all wake up in the box without our memories. You should remember your name in-”

“It’s Teresa,” She cuts him off. “My name is Teresa.”

Thomas is stunned and finds himself quiet for a moment. He’s only been here for a little over a month but he doesn’t think anyone has ever come out of the box with their name. But she also is the first to come out of the box and know someone else’s name. “Well I’m Thomas… but you already knew that.”

The girl scrutinizes him, frowning softly as she drops the weapon entirely. “They said I was saying your name in my sleep… Do we know each other?”

His hope from earlier disappears at that question, she must not actually remember their relationship. So she won’t be able to answer any of his questions, she’ll be just as lost as he is. “I don’t know. I was hoping you remembered since you remembered my name. You’re the first one to come out of the box knowing your name and knowing someone else’s. So you don’t remember anything?”

Teresa once again just watches him and Thomas wants to know what’s running through her mind to make her think so hard before replying to him. She shakes her head to answer his question but doesn’t say anything as she continues watching him. “Who’s that boy?” She suddenly asks, turning her head to look to the side.

Thomas follows her gaze, spotting Newt watching them. From here he can see Newt’s crossed arms and while that’s a sign the boy is upset, Thomas can’t help but smile softly, he looks cute from up here. “That’s Newt, he’s the second-in-command. So if he tells you to do something you should do it. He said you wouldn’t listen to any of them but one of the big rules here is to do your part and another is to not hurt other Gladers… like don’t throw things down onto their heads.”

“What’s your relationship with him?” She asks after a few minutes of silence.

He looks over at her, raising an eyebrow. The question sort of reminds him of how Newt had acted when she first came up, but that doesn’t make any sense to him. She doesn’t know him, she said so herself, so it’s not like she could be jealous of Newt, right? “We’re dating, why?”

She stares at him before shaking her head but Thomas can see the change in her body language, as if she’d just gotten bad news that she didn’t want. “No reason.”

An awkward silence starts between them and Thomas glances back towards Newt. “Well… We should get you down. It’ll be good for Alby to go over the rules and everything with you. You’ll start your new jobs as soon as you’re cleared by the Med-jacks,” Thomas says after a little while, moving so he could open the trapdoor.

Teresa doesn’t say anything but goes along with what he says, moving to climb down the tower. Thomas is confused about the whole situation. It’s almost like Teresa knows something that he doesn’t but she isn’t sharing the information, every reply she gives is thought out and carefully crafted. When she found out about him and Newt dating she changed immediately. Thomas has no clue why. The whole situation is just confusing and he wants it to be resolved.
