Register of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps
CHAPTER 0: PREFACE
On the events that happened on the 10th of August, 2013:
When alien life entered Earth, it was from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. A fissure between two tectonic plates, a portal between dimensions known as The Breach. It was located off the coastline of the Philippines near Guam, on the floor of Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean. Coordinates 11.3733° N, 142.5917° E.
On the events that followed the 10th of August, 2013:
We called the rift "The Breach" and whatever was on the other side, "the Anteverse" (see Chapter 2: Locations).
The Breach connected the Earth to the Anteverse, the homeworld of what humanity would in the following years call the Kaiju, and its atomic nature has largely been studied even after its closure.
Trespasser was the first Kaiju to emerge from the Breach and attack humanity. It attacked San Francisco on August 10th, 2013. It took the destruction of three cities and six days to take him down. After a second, third, and fourth attack and the implementation of a Kaiju Emergency Alert System, it became clear that whatever this was, it was not going to stop.
This was just the beginning of a war. The world came together, pooling its resources and throwing aside old rivalries for the sake of the greater good. To fight monsters, we created monsters of our own, and the Jaeger program was born.
Jaegers were designed with two ideas in mind: defeat kaijus and do it without the use of nuclear warfare. The idea behind them was quite simple: a big war machine shaped like a robot that could perfectly be a child's toy.
First test discovered that it was impossible for just one person to pilot a Jaeger. It overloaded the mind of its test pilot. This issue brought into question the Jaeger Program's feasibility. The solution came in the shape of the Drift, a connection between the two pilots based on technology developed by DARPA, which allowed two persons to simultaneously pilot the Jaeger successfully.
Sharing the weight of piloting was proved successful, and since then, Jaegers have been controlled by a pair of pilots; the mechanic was simple: each pilot works as one "hemisphere" of the Jaeger's brain.
To be able to pilot together, the two pilots need to be capable of drifting with each other (see Chapter 3: the Drift) and sharing their minds in the same space. Pilots who enter the drift share one mind and their very own thoughts and feelings. Nothing is let out of the drift.
On the creatures:
Kaiju were a race of amphibious creatures (for more references, see Chapter 4: Kaiju). Kaiju are extremely hostile and toxic creatures whose blood, known as kaiju blood, can contaminate extensive areas once they're killed.
They were designed with the intention to wipe out all humankind by the Precursors (see Chapter 4: Kaiju).
