Dang Ol’… Ain’t No Tellin’

Summary:

Dale and Boomhauer cuddle

Work Text:

The soft glow of the television flickers across the living room, casting long, dancing shadows on the walls. Outside, the familiar buzz of cicadas hums a steady lullaby. Dale Gribble, usually a coiled spring of paranoia and conspiracy theories, is surprisingly relaxed. He’s sprawled on the worn, comfy couch, his head nestled against the solid, warm chest of his best friend, Boomhauer. Boomhauer, ever the laid-back enigma, has an arm loosely draped around Dale's shoulders, his fingers occasionally, almost unconsciously, tracing patterns on the back of Dale's faded "Sugarfoot's Sweet Shop" t-shirt. His distinctive mumble, usually a torrent of indecipherable wisdom, is softer tonight, a low rumble that vibrates gently through Dale’s skull.

"Man, talkin’ ‘bout… dang ol’… ain’t no tellin’," Boomhauer murmurs, his voice a comforting vibration.

Dale just sighs contentedly, a sound so alien to his usual repertoire of indignant huffs and suspicious sniffs. He’s got one of Boomhauer’s throw pillows clutched to his chest, and his bare feet, usually tucked into worn sneakers, are propped up on the coffee table, right next to a half-empty can of Alamo beer. The air conditioning hums a steady rhythm, a cool contrast to the lingering heat of the Texas evening. Dale’s eyes are half-closed, heavy with a sleepy contentment that’s rare for him. He can feel Boomhauer’s steady heartbeat, a comforting rhythm beneath his ear.

It’s a good beat, a slow, dependable thud that makes the usual frantic whirring in Dale’s brain finally, mercifully, quiet down.

"Dang ol’ good… yeah, man," Dale mumbles back, his voice thick with drowsiness.

He shifts slightly, snuggling deeper into Boomhauer’s embrace. He’s not usually one for overt displays of affection, but tonight, the familiar boundaries of their friendship feel… permeable. It’s just easy. Natural. Like breathing. Boomhauer's hand pauses its tracing on Dale's back, then moves to gently cup the back of Dale’s head, his thumb brushing over Dale’s short, bristly hair. It’s a small, tender gesture that speaks volumes without a single clear word. Dale feels a warmth spread through him, not just from Boomhauer’s body heat, but something deeper, something that settles in his chest and makes him feel safe.

"That ol’… dang ol’… crazy world out there, man," Boomhauer drawls, his voice a little clearer now, as if the quiet closeness has loosened his usual linguistic knots. "But in here… talkin’ ‘bout… peace, man."

Dale hums in agreement, a soft, satisfied sound. He can smell Boomhauer’s familiar scent – a mix of Old Spice, gasoline, and something distinctly masculine and comforting. It’s a scent that’s been a constant in his life for decades, a smell that means home, means safety, means just… Boomhauer. The TV screen shows some generic sitcom, the laughter track a distant, unimportant murmur. Neither of them is really watching. The focus is on the shared warmth, the quiet breathing, the unspoken understanding that hums between them like a low, resonant chord.

Dale’s hand, which was gripping the throw pillow, slowly uncurls, and he lets it rest, palm up, on Boomhauer’s chest. Boomhauer’s free hand, the one not cradling Dale’s head, gently covers Dale’s, his fingers lacing loosely with Dale’s. It’s a simple touch, but it feels profound in its unassuming intimacy.

"Yeah, man," Dale says, his voice barely a whisper.

He’s almost asleep now, the anxieties that usually plague his mind finally pushed to the fringes. The world outside, with its shadowy government conspiracies and alien invasions, feels miles away, a distant hum that can’t penetrate the cozy bubble they’ve created. Boomhauer shifts slightly, adjusting his position to better accommodate Dale. He pulls him a little closer, and Dale tucks his head even tighter against Boomhauer’s shoulder. The movement is fluid, practiced, as if they’ve been doing this for years, which, in a way, they have been, just not always so openly, so undeniably.

The silence stretches, comfortable and full. It’s the kind of silence that only exists between people who know each other inside and out, who don’t need words to communicate the depth of their connection. It’s a silence filled with history, with shared laughs and sorrows, with decades of unwavering friendship. A soft snore rumbles from Dale, a small, endearing sound that makes Boomhauer’s lips curve into a gentle smile. He looks down at his best friend, who is finally, truly, at peace. Boomhauer’s eyes, usually a little distant and observing, are soft, filled with a quiet affection. He tightens his arm around Dale just a fraction, a silent promise of comfort and unwavering presence.

The TV continues its low drone, the cicadas hum outside, and the world keeps spinning, but Dale and Boomhauer are exactly where they need to be.
