Work Text:
The speakers thrum with a deep, resonating bass that vibrates through the very floorboards of Ant’s living room. Dec’s head bobs slightly, almost imperceptibly, as the infectious, repetitive beat of a Lil Jon track fills the air. The lights are low, casting long, shifting shadows as the music pulses. It’s late, past midnight, but neither of them feels the drag of sleep. Instead, there's this shared hum of energy, a comfortable buzz that only happens when they’re together, unwound from the day’s relentless schedule.
“This track always gets me, man,” Dec shouts, his voice a little hoarse over the music, a grin stretching across his face. He’s perched on the edge of the plush, oversized sofa, a half-empty mug of lukewarm tea forgotten on the coffee table. His trainers are kicked off, abandoned by the door.
Sprawled back against the cushions with his eyes half-closed, Ant grunts in agreement. He’s got his arms folded across his chest, a soft, contented expression on his face. The crunk music, usually reserved for workouts or pre-show hype, takes on a different vibe now, a rhythmic backdrop to their quiet companionship. He feels the vibrations in his chest, a deep, satisfying rumble that’s almost like a purr. The air itself feels thick with the bass, a physical presence.
“Remember that time we tried to learn the ‘snap’ dance for that sketch?” Ant says, a low chuckle rumbling in his throat. He opens his eyes, looking over at Dec, who’s now trying to subtly do a shoulder shimmy in time with the music.
Dec’s shoulders hunch in mock embarrassment. “Don’t remind me! We looked like two old blokes trying to catch flies. Absolutely tragic.”
He laughs, a genuine, full-bellied laugh that makes his whole body shake. The sound is warm, familiar, wrapping around Ant like a comfortable blanket. The song transitions, a new beat dropping, even more insistent and driving. The air gets thicker, warmer, somehow. Ant shifts, pushing himself upright, and Dec automatically makes space, their movements so synchronized after all these years it’s almost instinctual. He leans back into the corner of the sofa, letting out a soft sigh as he settles. Dec, still grooving gently, glances over, his eyes sparkling in the dim light.
“Fancy a proper chill out, then?” Dec asks, his voice softer now, almost lost beneath the layers of bass and synth.
He gestures vaguely at the expanse of sofa between them. It’s an unspoken invitation, one Ant readily accepts. Ant pushes off his shoes with his heels, letting them thud softly onto the thick rug. He turns, swinging his legs up onto the sofa, and then carefully, deliberately, he leans into Dec. It’s a slow, unhurried movement, a natural progression. Dec’s arm is already lifting, creating a welcoming space, and Ant tucks himself in, his head resting against Dec’s shoulder. Dec’s arm settles around his waist, a comfortable weight, pulling him closer until there’s no space left between them. Ant can feel the soft fabric of Dec’s old hoodie against his cheek, the slight warmth of his skin underneath.
The music continues to play, the crunk beats now a gentle background hum, a comforting rhythm rather than a forceful presence. Ant closes his eyes again, letting the vibrations of the bass soothe him. He can feel Dec’s breathing, slow and steady, a gentle rise and fall beneath his ear. The scent of Dec’s aftershave, a familiar, woody scent, mingles with the faint smell of old tea and the general warmth of the room. It’s home.
Dec’s fingers, warm and calloused, start to trace lazy patterns on Ant’s arm, just above his elbow. It’s a light touch, barely there, but it sends shivers of contentment through Ant. He shifts slightly, burrowing deeper, his cheek pressing more firmly into Dec’s shoulder. He feels utterly safe, utterly at peace. The loud, boisterous music somehow transforms into a lullaby, a shared rhythm of their existence.
“Tired, eh?” Dec murmurs, his voice a low rumble right next to Ant’s ear. Ant feels the vibration of the words against his temple.
“Mmm-hmm,” Ant hums in response, too comfortable to form full words.
He’s not tired in the way of needing sleep, more like a profound sense of relaxation washing over him. All the day’s worries, the incessant chatter of their work, the endless demands, they all just melt away. Here, in this cocoon of warmth and sound, none of it matters. Dec’s other hand, the one not tracing patterns, gently lifts and starts to comb through Ant’s hair, just above his ear. It’s a tender, almost absentminded gesture, but it speaks volumes. Ant leans into the touch, a soft sigh escaping his lips. He feels completely unwound, like a tightly wound spring finally released. The world outside this living room, with its flashing lights and roaring crowds, seems impossibly distant.
The crunk music slowly fades out, transitioning to a softer, more melodic hip-hop track. The beat is still present, but less aggressive, more atmospheric. It’s a perfect shift, a natural evolution of their evening. Dec’s arm tightens around Ant’s waist, pulling him even closer, if that’s even possible. Ant’s leg, stretched out along the sofa, brushes against Dec’s, and he feels the warmth of his skin through their clothes.
“This is nice, isn’t it?” Dec says, his voice a soft whisper in the quietening room.
Ant just nods, his eyes still closed. He doesn’t need to say anything. The feeling is mutual, understood without words. The quiet intimacy of the moment is profound. He feels Dec’s breath stirring his hair, the steady beat of his heart against his chest. This is their sanctuary, this shared space of comfort and connection. The crunk music, the late hour, the worn sofa – it all contributes to this perfect, soft bubble of being. He can feel himself drifting, not into sleep, but into a deeper state of calm, enveloped in Dec’s warmth, anchored by his presence. And as the last faint beats of the music dissipate into the silence, Ant knows there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.
