The TV's low hum is the only sound in the living room, a soft backdrop to the quiet comfort that has settled between Derek and Casey. Sunlight, warm and golden, streams through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air and highlighting the comfortable disarray of the sofa. Casey is curled into Derek's side, her head resting on his shoulder, a familiar weight she’s grown to cherish. His arm is draped loosely around her, fingers occasionally idly tracing patterns on her arm through the fabric of her worn t-shirt.
"You know," Casey murmurs, her voice a little muffled against his shirt, "it's weird how comfortable this is now. Remember when we practically needed a referee to be in the same room?"
Derek chuckles, a low rumble that vibrates through her. "Yeah, I remember. You were always so… intense." He bumps his chin playfully against the top of her head. "And you still are, for the record."
She shifts slightly, nestling deeper into his side. "And you were always so… annoying." She nudges him with her elbow, but there's no real heat behind it. "Though, I guess you still are, too, sometimes."
He grins, and she can feel it. "Hey, I take that as a compliment. Means I'm consistent."
A comfortable silence stretches between them again, filled only by the quiet rhythm of their breathing and the faint, almost imperceptible hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. Casey’s fingers are playing with the loose thread on the cuff of his hoodie, a nervous habit she’s had since she was little. It’s comforting, though, to have him here, solid and warm next to her. She can smell his faint scent of Old Spice and something uniquely Derek – a mix of outdoors and… well, just Derek.
"You really gonna wear that hoodie out?" Casey asks, gesturing vaguely at the faded blue fabric. "It's, like, three sizes too big for you now. And it has that mysterious stain from when you tried to bake that… thing."
Derek glances down at the offending garment. "Hey, this is a classic! It’s got character. And that 'mysterious stain' is a battle scar, thank you very much. From my valiant attempt at culinary excellence."
"More like culinary disaster," Casey retorts, a small smile playing on her lips. "I think that 'thing' tried to eat our toaster."
He laughs, a genuine, unforced sound that makes her chest feel warm. "Details, details. Anyway, it's comfortable. Like… this." He squeezes her gently, pulling her even closer.
She sighs contentedly, letting her head sink further into the hollow of his shoulder. The fabric of his hoodie is soft against her cheek, and the warmth radiating from him is incredibly soothing. It’s not just the physical comfort, though. It’s the feeling of safety, of being completely at ease. With Derek, there’s no need for pretense, no need to be anything other than exactly who she is. And he’s the same, for all his bravado and teasing.
"You know," Casey says, her voice softer now, "it’s kind of nice, just… being."
"Yeah," Derek agrees, his voice surprisingly soft too. His hand moves from her arm to gently rest on her hair, his fingers idly stroking the strands. "No drama, no shouting matches. Just… chilling."
"Don't get used to it," she warns, but there's no bite in her tone. "We'll probably be yelling at each other about who ate the last Pop-Tart in about an of hour."
He snorts. "True. But for now… peace."
He shifts slightly, pulling a throw blanket from the back of the sofa and expertly draping it over both of them. It's a worn, familiar quilt, smelling faintly of laundry detergent and popcorn.
Casey pulls it up to her chin, feeling the added warmth. "You know, for someone who claims to hate all things mushy, you're surprisingly good at this whole... cozy thing."
Derek grunts, but she can feel the amusement in his chest. "Don't tell anyone, okay? My reputation would be ruined."
"Your reputation as the guy who cries at sappy commercials?" she teases, poking him in the ribs.
"Hey!" he protests, but it’s a half-hearted sound. "That was one time! And it was a commercial about a puppy saving a kitten, okay? Who wouldn't cry?"
Casey giggles, a light, airy sound. "Only you, Derek. Only you."
She closes her eyes, letting the gentle sway of his breathing lull her. The sunlight shifts, and the room dims slightly, but the warmth of the blanket and the solid presence of Derek next to her remain. It’s a simple moment, but it’s perfect. A quiet, peaceful bubble in their often-chaotic lives.
