Usually Locked Away

Summary:

Dexter and Keith cuddle

Work Text:

The fluorescent hum of the lab finally fades, replaced by the thrum of the engine as Dexter steers the Bronco toward home. The Miami heat, usually an oppressive blanket, feels almost comforting tonight, a familiar weight against his skin. He’s tired, not just from the usual parade of blood and bodily fluids, but from the tightrope walk of his double life. He craves the stillness of his house, the quiet hum of the air conditioning, and more than anything, the solid warmth of Keith.

He pulls into the driveway, the familiar scent of blooming jasmine and something distinctly Keith, a mix of spicy cologne and warm laundry, already reaching him. The front door opens before he even reaches it, and Taylor, a whirlwind of gangly limbs and bright eyes, barrels out.

“Daddy Dex!” she shouts, launching herself at him.

He catches her, a genuine smile, not one of his practiced ones, spreading across his face. She smells of bubblegum and the lingering scent of dinner, probably Keith’s famous slow-cooker pot roast.

“Hey, bug,” he says, nuzzling her hair. “What’s up?”

“Papa Keith said you’d be home soon! We watched a movie, and I finished my homework, and… can we play Chutes and Ladders?”

Keith appears in the doorway, leaning against the frame, a soft smile playing on his lips. He’s shed his uniform, opting for a worn t-shirt that hugs his broad shoulders and faded sweatpants. He looks tired, too, but there’s an underlying current of calm that always seems to radiate from him.

“Someone’s been waiting patiently,” Keith says, his voice a low rumble that always soothes something frantic inside Dexter.

“She has,” Dexter confirms, setting Taylor down. “But Daddy Dexter needs a few minutes to decompress. How about you two start dinner without me?”

Taylor groans good-naturedly. “Okay. But then Chutes and Ladders!”

Dexter walks over to Keith, a quiet understanding passing between them. Keith reaches out, his large hand settling on Dexter’s lower back, a simple, grounding touch.

“Rough one?” Keith asks, his thumb rubbing small circles.

Dexter just nods, letting out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “The usual. Some very creative dismemberment.”

Keith’s smile doesn’t falter, a testament to their unique understanding. He squeezes Dexter’s back. “Go shower. I’ll keep the beast entertained.” He winks, gesturing to Taylor, who’s already halfway to the kitchen, humming an off-key tune.

The shower is hot, the water pounding away the day’s grime and the lingering metallic tang of blood. He lets the steam fill the small bathroom, the scent of lavender and eucalyptus from Keith’s shower gel a comforting presence. When he emerges, wrapped in a fluffy towel, the house is filled with the warm, savory aroma of pot roast. He finds Keith in the kitchen, dishing out generous portions onto plates. Taylor is already at the table, eagerly awaiting her food, her bright eyes fixed on her plate.

“Smells incredible,” Dexter says, taking his usual seat.

“It’s the secret ingredient,” Keith says, winking at Taylor. “Love.”

Taylor giggles, kicking her legs under the table. “And lots of yummy gravy!”

Dinner is a comfortable affair, filled with Taylor’s excited chatter about her day at school and Keith’s steady, reassuring presence. Dexter finds himself relaxing, the tight knot in his stomach slowly unraveling. He watches Keith, the way he interacts with Taylor, and the way he effortlessly navigates the everyday chaos of their lives. It’s a quiet miracle, this life they’ve built, a sanctuary from the darkness that always seems to cling to Dexter.

After dinner, true to his word, Dexter plays Chutes and Ladders with Taylor, enduring her triumphant cheers and exaggerated groans with a level of patience he rarely affords anyone else. When she finally yawns, a deep, sleepy sound, Keith scoops her up without a word, carrying her off to bed for story time. Dexter busies himself with the dishes, the warm water, and mundane tasks a welcome distraction. He’s almost finished when he hears Keith’s footsteps, soft and deliberate, approaching the kitchen.

Keith wraps his arms around Dexter from behind, resting his chin on Dexter’s shoulder. His warmth seeps through Dexter’s t-shirt, a comforting weight.

“She’s out like a light,” Keith murmurs, his voice a low thrum against Dexter’s ear.

Dexter leans back into the embrace, letting the tension drain from his shoulders. “Thanks.”

“Anytime, man.” Keith’s hands find Dexter’s, intertwining their fingers, his thumb stroking the back of Dexter’s hand. “Come on. Let’s go decompress.”

They move into the living room, a space filled with soft lighting and the comfortable clutter of their lives; a discarded magazine, a half-finished puzzle on the coffee table, a well-loved throw blanket draped over the arm of the sofa. Keith settles onto the couch, patting the spot next to him. Dexter sinks onto the cushion, and Keith immediately pulls him in, his arm wrapping around Dexter’s shoulders. Dexter leans into the embrace, his head resting against Keith’s broad chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. Keith’s hand comes up to stroke Dexter’s hair, his fingers gently untangling the knots.

“You okay?” Keith asks, his voice soft, almost a whisper.

Dexter takes a deep breath, the scent of Keith’s skin, a familiar, comforting aroma, filling his senses. “Yeah. Now I am.”

Keith continues to stroke his hair, his touch calming. “Good. Just… let it go for a bit, okay? Whatever’s swirling around in there.”

Dexter hums in agreement, feeling the tension in his muscles slowly release. He feels safe here, in Keith’s arms, a feeling he rarely experiences anywhere else. He can be himself, the real self, the one that’s usually locked away behind layers of carefully constructed normalcy. Keith sees it all, the darkness and the light, and he accepts it. He embraces it.

Keith shifts slightly, pulling Dexter closer, until their legs are tangled together, and Dexter’s head is nestled more securely against his shoulder. He feels the warmth of Keith’s body seeping into his, a comforting heat that chases away the lingering chill of the morgue.

“You know,” Keith murmurs, his voice a low rumble that vibrates through Dexter’s chest, “sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve this.”

Dexter lifts his head, looking up at Keith. Keith’s eyes, usually sharp and observant, are soft, filled with a deep affection.

“You deserve everything good, Keith,” Dexter says, his voice a little rougher than he intends. “You’re… you’re my anchor.”

Keith smiles, a genuine, heartwarming smile that reaches his eyes. He presses a soft kiss to Dexter’s forehead. “And you’re mine, Dex. Even with all your… eccentricities.”

Dexter lets out a small laugh, a genuine sound of amusement. “I suppose that’s one way to put it.”

Keith’s hand moves from Dexter’s hair to his back, stroking a slow, rhythmic pattern. The world outside the living room, the world of blood spatter and coded messages, fades into the background. There’s only the quiet hum of the air conditioner, the soft glow of the lamp, and the comforting warmth of Keith’s embrace.

He closes his eyes, letting himself sink deeper into the embrace. This is home. This is where the monster rests. This is where he finds peace. And in the solid, unwavering warmth of Keith’s arms, Dexter knows, with a certainty that rivals his Dark Passenger, that he is exactly where he’s meant to be.
