Work Text:
Ever since George got his driver's license, he's been enjoying his newfound freedom. He does still enjoy being Dream's passenger princess from time to time, don't get him wrong on that. It's just... things have been different lately.
He can't really put a finger on when it started, but he supposes it was probably the day he walked out of the DMV with Dream's mum, exhausted from hours of waiting in uncomfortable chairs to take the most unflattering photo of his life, but victorious in his possession of yet another piece of plastic to bind him to Florida.
She'd been so proud of him, pulling him into a tight motherly hug before offering to take him out for ice cream - a tradition she'd started with Dream's older sister, all the way down to his youngest, and now, George. Her honorary son.
The following week he bought a car. Something fun, yet practical and reliable. A bright blue Mercedes with a moonroof and cooling seats and powerful air conditioning that he uses on a regular basis. And since the day those keys were placed in his hand, he's been all over Orlando, exploring highways, back roads, and everything in between.
His favorite place though?
The grocery store.
George doesn't know why, but there's something calming about pushing a cart up and down the aisles. Something exciting about finding a new variety of apple he hasn't tried before. Something satisfying about finding an item he loves on sale and buying enough packages to last a whole month (who's he kidding - it won't last more than two weeks).
Even better though - finding something that Dream likes.
George can still remember the look of sheer happiness on Dream's face when he opened the grocery bag George presented to him, containing an assortment of frozen items. Mango, avocado, a tropical fruit blend that George found especially intriguing, and the best part - frozen cotton candy grapes.
And maybe Dream was so happy he kissed George.
But yeah, there's just something special about grocery shopping. Especially when Dream goes with him like he's doing today - shopping for a meal they're going to prepare together.
Something about this warms his heart in just the right way.
Something about pushing a cart or carrying a basket with Dream walking beside him. The way Dream takes George's hand to stop him when he sees something he wants. Or the way Dream offers to grab something from the top shelf even though George is capable of getting it himself.
Or today, when there's a tray of samples in the cheese department. Dream doesn't hesitate to pick up one of the tiny cups holding a cracker, a slice of Camembert and a spoonful of sour cherry jam.
He takes a small bite, knowing how picky George can be, and after a moment Dream holds it out for George to taste. When George opens his mouth like a baby bird, Dream laughs as he pops it inside. And if Dream's thumb lingers on George's lip for a second longer than necessary, well that's just a bonus.
The little snack is delicious, so George grabs another, this time eating most of it and feeding what's left to Dream the way Dream fed him.
It's soft and domestic in a way he never expected grocery shopping to be. But then again it's Dream and everything carries a domestic air when he's around, whether it's a hand on the small of George's back, a soft voice whispering a joke in his ear, or feeding each other samples in the middle of the cheese department.
Dream grabs a box of crackers, a wheel of Camembert and a jar of jam to bring home. An appetizer to snack on while Dream is making steak and potatoes, and George is making the strawberry tart that he found a recipe for this morning.
They walk through the aisles to get the rest of what they need, go through the self-checkout with Dream scanning everything while George bags it. He's become a sort of expert at bagging groceries, something that Dream is as proud of as he is.
After paying, they take the bags back to George's car, loading them in the back before walking around to the front. George in the driver's seat with Dream as his passenger princess, just this once.
As George backs out of the parking spot, he places his hand on the back of Dreams seat and Dream gives it a little kiss, making George wrinkle his nose in amusement before moving his hand to Dream's thigh. It stays there for the drive home, and the entire time, George can't help but look forward to the next time he goes grocery shopping with Dream.
