Cats aren’t real. This has been documented by science, by history, and by discussions on anon memes. You might as well believe in astrology, or true love, or your intrinsic worth as a human being.
But something is living in your house. Its eyes watch you in the day. Sometimes, you hear the click of claws against your floor, or hear it running around or knocking your decorations to the ground. Food disappears from your plate when you’re not looking. The creature prefers meat.
There’s hair on your sweaters. It leaves mangled bodies of murdered mice and birds on your bed.
At night, it climbs onto your chest as you’re trying to sleep. Its weight pins you down; it drapes a long soft rope against your throat like a threat. It rumbles at you, making a sound like the deep growl of a prehistoric beast; then, digging its claws into your skin, it lays its head against your hand, wanting to be touched, hoping to be loved.
