Work Text:
It was late. It seemed Wyatt was sleeping well for the first time in months, since Juno had gone to Nico’s house for tonight. He seemed eager to see him, considering he had been out of town for a while, and Juno became restless when Nico was gone for too long. Summer had been sleeping well regardless, even while Juno was here, even with all of Wyatt’s stress.
Even when she was with child.
The news had gotten to her not long before Nico left town. For a while, despite the constant sickness, she slept quite well with the child. That was, until one particular night.
She was restful at first, as well as Wyatt, and at the time, it was about 2 in the morning. She was asleep for a good while, until some strange sensation caused her to rise from the bed, grunting slightly.
She slowly stepped out of the bed, unfurling the edges of her nightgown, tucked in from her constant shifting in her sleep.
Then, the sensation came again. A soft ‘oh’ escaped from her lips when she felt it. A flutter, then another, then…
Some strange swirling sensation. Like something was moving inside of her.
She looked in the mirror and looked down, suddenly seeing just how visible the baby bump was becoming. She protectively put her hand on her belly, looking around cautiously. Her heart swelled with some quiet, almost unbelievably sweet joy, her eyes glittering with unshed tears.
It was the most the baby had ever moved so far–to think it would be so late at night!
Eventually, Wyatt started to stir, feeling the emptiness next to him, and he looked over at her cautiously. He still felt a bit drowsy amidst the darkness bathing the room, but he managed to make out the shape of Summer sitting up, patiently.
“Sunny, you don’t usually wake up so late at night.” He uttered softly, scooting next to her with an almost unbelievable patience. He was far from upsetted with her–in fact, he seemed…afraid?
Summer looked at him, her eyes full of unshed tears as she winced, just slightly, once more.
“He’s moving.” She responded, almost inaudibly. Just barely getting the words out. “He woke me up, and he’s moving.”
Summer leaned against Wyatt then, feeling a bit lightheaded still. Wyatt could only marvel at her.
His eyes were full of disbelief.
His hands trembled slightly, and he uttered something to himself, suddenly becoming full of so many emotions, all at once–and each and every single one of them manifesting in him delicately placing his hand on her stomach.
And, moments later, a flutter, against his palm.
He hardly had time to register it before he felt a sudden kick against it, causing Summer to wince slightly. Wyatt would have fainted right then.
“...The baby. Our baby. He’s woken you?”
“It’s the first time he’s done it. I’m okay, I promise.”
Wyatt’s voice broke when he spoke again, hardly able to keep all of the emotions inside of him.
“Oh, Sunny…”
He held her close, the realization seeming to dawn on him stronger than it ever would have.
He was…a father. He was a father, of a child biologically his. Something he would have never imagined possible. His heart swelled with joy and worry and love and every known emotion at once. And he looked down at his Sunny once more.
That was their baby in there. Their baby. It was almost unbelievable–he had to keep telling himself it just to truly understand. It all felt like some surreal dream.
Summer lied on her back, sighing, and Wyatt lied down next to her, his palm still lying against her stomach. Every flutter sent him into some strange state of shock. He couldn’t believe it.
He just couldn’t believe that he had married this beautiful, enchanting woman, and she was carrying their child.
If it was a dream, it was one he never wanted to wake from.
