Work Text:

Madam Z lay on the dental chair, tapping a finger against the plastic armrest impatiently. Though she had been invited into the room by the nurse, it was clear that the dentist wasn’t ready yet, and she checked her watch and sighed, irritated with the delay.

Finally, the door opened, and a woman with wavy brown hair thrown up into a messy ponytail entered, face covered by a medical mask, eyes downcast, completely focused on the notes in her hand.

“Good morning! I do apologise for the delay, I overran with a slightly nervous child. I’ll try to be efficient and not keep you for too much longer.” As she raised her eyes towards her patient, the dentist paused momentarily, before moving on with a small shake of her head.

Madam Z mumbled some sort of affirmation, studying the lady in front of her. She seemed so very familiar, but she just couldn’t put her finger on it. The mask covering half her face only left her eyes free to study. They were a beautiful caramel brown with a gentle glisten of excitement, and they reminded Z of the gentle glow of the evening sun in a forest. She could already feel the initial frustration she had felt towards the lady fading, and settled down more gently into the chair.

“Now, have you had any growing concerns since your last visit to the dentist? I understand you are new to this practice, so I’m not sure how long it has been since you were last checked out.” The dentist asked as she snapped her gloves on and started lowering the chair.

“No, nothing to worry about. My last appointment was six months ago, don’t worry. I am just new to the area so I had to transfer offices Dr…?”

“Oh yes! Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Dr. Campbell, but the children call me Tooth Fairy. You are welcome to as well, if you would like.”

Z smiled lightly and nodded at the introduction, before taking a hint as the light switched on above her and opening her mouth.

Dr. Campbell, or, Tooth Fairy, as she claimed, placed two gentle fingers on Z’s chin and tilted it upwards, before grabbing a tool and getting started on the examination.

As she lay in the chair, Madam Z could do nothing but watch the focused movements of the dentist above her. Those eyes, those sweet, honey eyes enraptured her, pulling the physicist out of the chair as she got lost in them, feeling like she was flying. By the time she could finally pull away from their magnetic grip, she could've sworn that the appointment should've been over already, but the gentle click of metal against enamel was still present in her mouth, so she let her eyes wander a little bit more, tracing the lines of wavy brown hair that framed the soft face of the lady standing over her.

They hung perfectly, falling in a way that seemed like they had been placed on purpose. Unfortunately, the pale blue medical mask that covered the rest of the dentist’s face left a lot to the imagination, balancing on her nose at a point that just hinted at the possibility of a blanket of freckles, with one or two escaping over the wire perched on her nose.

Finally, Z felt the cold metal leave her mouth, and she shifted her jaw at the momentary relief, trying to get out the cricks that had been building up.

The escape was short lived, and within seconds she felt the increasingly-familiar touch of warm hands against her lips, tugging her mouth open.

“Nearly done. Please open your mouth.”

Instinctively, Z opened, barely registering the words as she stared at the dentist.

As she opened, Tooth Fairy mumbled a quiet, “Good girl,” and Z felt just about ready to explode as gloved fingers ran gently around her mouth.

She swallowed, and felt the smooth latex of the gloves nudge against her skin. A heat rushed up her face at the contact, and she squeezed her eyes shut as the dentist raised a questioning eyebrow. Now she was hyper-aware, it was becoming increasingly difficult to stay still and keep her tongue exactly where she wanted it. As each second passed, Madam Z felt more and more heat flow through her, and silently whispered a relieved prayer when Tooth Fairy finally pulled away, tugging her gloves off and turning around to make notes.

"Do you usually get so flustered at the dentist, Madam Z, or is it just me?”

If it were at all possible, the red glow on Z's face deepened, and she opened her mouth to answer, before being stopped in her tracks when Tooth Fairy turned around, mask removed. Z sat momentarily, mouth agape, before coming to her senses. That was why Tooth Fairy had seemed so familiar!

"Are your patients usually your Tinder matches, Dr Campbell, or is it just me?”

A small smile tugged at the corner of the dentist's mouth, raising up the shiny metal headgear that attached to the braces on her teeth. It was an unusual look, but Z found that she couldn't take her eyes off the beautiful woman. In her hands rested a familiar jar of candies that, alongside the braces, had featured in every one of the images on the dentist’s profile.

"Do try not to let it get to your head, but I try not to make a habit of it so, I would say that it is just you, yes.”

“…Does this mean I need to get a new dentist?”

“Only if you want to continue. If you’d prefer, we can leave this here and continue in a purely professional manner.”

Z raised an eyebrow, “Refer me, please.”

Smiling, Tooth Fairy scribbled on a piece of paper, before folding it up and passing it to Z. “Show this to the receptionist on your way out. She’ll sort it.”

Z nodded, pocketing the paper. “Any concerns about my teeth?”

Tooth Fairy chuckled slightly, as if she had completely forgotten that’s what they were originally there for.

“None at all. You have excellent oral hygiene, I am impressed. Keep doing what you are doing.”

“Well, thank you.” Z nodded, standing up, and walking towards the door, before pausing with a hand raised to grab the door handle as she glanced back at the other woman.

“May I just ask one more thing?”

Tooth Fairy smiled, nodding.

“We’ve been matched for a week and you have yet to ask me on a date, why is that?”

Tooth Fairy blushed, fingers tapping over the lid of her jar.

“A simple reason, unfortunately. I was afraid you would say no.”

Z nodded and, with a small smile, leaned towards the dentist and pressed their lips together in a chaste kiss, before mumbling, “Well, you needn’t be. I’ll see you tomorrow at 7?”

Tooth Fairy seemed to be momentarily stunned, but nodded, blushing a dark crimson and staring after Z as she walked out.
