Happy Birthday Lucifer!

Summary:

Alastor and Charlie surprise Lucifer for his birthday!

Notes:

Welcome to my self-indulgent birthday fic because it's my birthday, and Lucifer's my favorite character, so we share a birthday. Takes place in May of their first year together.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Charlie!” Alastor yelped as a balloon popped loudly.

“Sorry!” She said. “I didn’t mean to blow it up that much!”

“Should I put you on streamer duty instead?”

“No, I think I can blow up a few balloons.”

“You clearly can’t! You’re lucky your father’s downstairs!”

“I can do this Papa!”

“Ugh. Fine. Just try not to pop any more balloons!”

“Okay,”

Alastor rolled his eyes as he walked around the living room hanging up pink, yellow, and blue streamers, hanging up different designs and patterns.

36… Lucifer’s turning 36 today. Wow…

“Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Sammy! Happy birthday too youuuuuuuuu!” Alastor and his mother sang before Sammy blew out his candle on the cupcake he was given.

“Happy birthday dear,” his ma said, giving Sammy a tight hug.

“Wow, I can’t believe I’m 14 now,” Sammy exclaims, and Alastor believes it. He almost forgot about his birthday and would have if Alastor didn’t remind him.

“Well you are, and I have something for you.” He led Sammy to the couch, brought out a poorly wrapped present, and gave it to his best friend. “Don’t judge my wrapping skills.”

“I’ll try.” He laughed as he unwrapped the mountain of paper. His face lit up immediately when he saw the handmade framed photo of them. They were at the duck pond and both had goofy smiles on their faces and loose ties from just getting out of church. There was a duck in the background of the photo, swimming in the pond.

“You-thank you!” Sammy wrapped his hands around Alastor’s neck, embracing him in a tight hug.

“Of course,” Alastor says,

“Happy birthday tooooo youuuuuuu!!” He says over the phone. “Happy 16th birthday. I’ll give you your present when you come home.”

“Okay. I miss you.” Sammy says. “A lot.”

“I miss you too.” Alastor sighs. “What did you do today?”

“Happy birthday dear Sammy.” He softly cried/sang, tears slowly leaving out of his eyes. “Please come back. I’m sorry.”

“There!” Charlie said triumphantly. “36 balloons!”

“Charlie,” Alastor exasperatingly sighed. “I said blow up the number 36 balloon.”

“I did that too!” she showed him the silver 36.

“Oh!” He says, climbing down the ladder. “Well, I’m sorry I doubted you, Charlie.”

“You should be.” She playfully stuck her tongue out at him and they both started to laugh.

Today was different. Lucifer just couldn’t remember why. It felt special somehow.

 It’s just another day, right?

“I’m ho-ome!” Lucifer says opening the door and walking up the stairs. “I couldn’t find strawberry mint ice cream, but I found regular strawberry!” He says, putting the bags down in the kitchen.

“Cool! We’re in the living room!” Charlie calls.

“Okay! Ice cream’s in the freezer.” He says as he walks into the room.

Wow look at those deco-

“SURPRISE!” Charlie and Alastor called.

“You guys! What the fuck?” He laughed as confetti from Charlie’s party popper rained down on him.

“Happy birthday!” Charlie exclaims as Alastor kisses him on the cheek.

“What the-” Lucifer smiles as his family wraps him in a hug. “I love you guys!”

“We know,” they say, squeezing him tightly, before letting go.

They didn't do much for the rest of the day, aside from having sushi for dinner and enjoying some ice cream. They watched a movie, and Lucifer opened Charlie’s present, which was a clay duck. Alastor insisted that he wait until the end of the day to open his gift.

After Charlie went to bed, Alastor led them to their room and gave him his gift.

“Your wrapping skills have improved,” Lucifer teasingly noted.

“Shut up.”

Lucifer laughed and opened the box to find two things, the first one that Lucifer noticed was, “The Great Gatsby?”

“Yep.”

“Oooooo, thank you!” He hugged.

“There’s one more thing.”

Lucifer let go and pulled out a book of shorts. It was red and white, with silver embroidery saying, “Memories?”

“Open it.”

Lucifer flipped open to the first page, and it had a photo of them, both at age six, proudly holding up scribbled crayon drawings. The next page had another photo of them, about six months from the last photo, and the next was them at the start of the WChallange, when they were about 7 and 8.

As he flipped through the photos they got older, but always stayed together, until the last photo, when they were 16. Then the next photo was one with Alastor’s mom during Christmas. All the photos after were ones of them together, none were staged or particularly pretty, but they were both happy in every. Single. One.

“Thank you.” He closed the book and held it close to his chest. He brought Alastor close for a kiss.

“Happy Birthday,” was whispered before they locked lips.
