Akito wouldn’t consider himself an ‘early bird’. He just happened to wake up at 7 a.m. sharp every morning, that’s all.
Okay, well maybe he was an early bird. But, that still didn’t mean he liked waking up at the crack of dawn! It was just a force of habit. Besides, doing his daily runs was easier to do in the morning.
Reluctantly, Akito decided to get out of bed. He removed Toya’s arm that was still holding him in a tight hug and sat up on their shared bed, rubbing the final remains of sleepiness out of his eyes. He looked over at the love of his life. Toya was still sleeping peacefully, albeit with a bit of a scrunched expression on his face as he held onto nothing, noticing something (or someone) was missing. With a soft smile, Akito leaned down, brushed the hair away from Toya’s forehead, and planted a gentle kiss at the spot. His husband’s face immediately relaxed as he let out a sigh. Cute.
Akito finally stood up and walked to the closet to change into appropriate clothes for his run, picking up a hair tie on his way. He quickly changed into pants and slipped into a comfortable sweater. He stared at himself in the mirror and carefully tied his hair into a low ponytail. It didn’t take him long to get to the front door, and soon he was off on his run.
–
Quite a few minutes later, Akito got back home. He took his shoes and sweater off at the door and put on slippers instead then made his way to the kitchen. The clock read 7:30, Toya would be waking up soon. He should probably be making breakfast.
Akito grabbed a can of spam from the cabinet. Something quick and easy to make. He had just begun to cook when he felt a pair of arms snake around his waist. Akito didn’t need to turn his head around to find out who it was. He let out a small chuckle.
“Mornin’, love,” Akito said as he turned his head to kiss Toya on the cheek, then turned his attention back to cooking.
“Morning, dearest...” Toya mumbled back as he returned the kiss to Akito’s cheek. He moved Akito’s ponytail off his shoulder so he could rest his forehead on it instead—something he usually did when he woke up too early and was still tired.
Akito continued making breakfast, allowing Toya to snooze for just a little bit longer. A few moments went by when Akito heard a small mumble come from his sleepy husband.
“..Come back to bed,” Toya said quietly, hugging the ginger just a bit tighter, as if trying to drag him back himself. Akito just smiled at this, keeping his attention on the spam that he was stir-frying.
“I’d love to, but..” Akito trailed off, gently nudging his shoulder and gesturing to what he was preparing for them.
“You’re making us breakfast?” Toya asked a question with an obvious answer. Akito just nodded, paying more attention to not burning the food.
“Hm.. You didn’t forget to feed the cat first, did you?” To that question, Akito froze.
Ah, right.
The cat.
The cat Akito had definitely, obviously, absolutely had not forgotten about.
“Eh..? Of course not..” He answered nervously, but he knew Toya could see straight through his lie. As if on cue, Kuro, their cat (which Toya had tried to name Tchaikovsky, but Akito had convinced him to choose a simpler name), let out a soft meow beside them. The couple looked down at the cat, and Kuro looked back up at them. He looked angrily at Akito and bapped at his foot, as if trying to tell him to hurry up.
“Don’t look at me like that! I’m cooking right now, Kuro, give me a minute, will ya?” Akito tsked, turning his attention back to their breakfast.
“Akito..” Toya said in disapproval. Akito sputtered.
“Oh come on, you’re taking his side now? What about our food, huh?” Akito huffed, turned to look at Toya, then frowned. Toya smiled before planting a quick kiss on Akito’s lips. Before Akito could say anything, Toya let go of him and walked over to Kuro’s food bowl.
“It’s alright, love. I’ll refill his bowl. Though, don’t forget next time,” Toya said, grabbing the bag of cat food and filling the dish. Kuro ran straight over at the sound of the kibble hitting the metal bowl.
“Thanks, and I won’t,” Akito responded, finally able to focus on the spam which was almost done cooking. Once it finished, Akito brought a plate of it to the table as well as a bowl of rice. Toya helped set the table, bringing plates and utensils. The two sat down together.
“Thank you for cooking this, Akito.”
“No problem. Now let’s eat, I’m starving.”
